  • In this video, I go on a winter camping trip at Kachess Lake in Washington. Along the way, I met up with two friends and enjoyed the night around the fire, cooking and eating Thai food, and ultimately field-testing the 4x4 Colorado Nimbus.

    Apologies. Didn’t realize how loud the background music was.
    1 gallon of diesel lasted ~14 hours with 1/5 of diesel left.

    I use a couple bits of soundproofing liner on the points of contact for my RTT and that seems to work well

      I actually did something similar a couple of weeks ago and haven't had any issues so far

    You don't want your diesel heater exhaust pointing upwards like that, the condensation it produces is corrosive. I have a couple of those same HCalory units, highly recommend upgrading the fuel line to the 1/4" nylon with a better and clear fuel filter, and if you're only using it for your tent you should tune it down to 16hz to consume less fuel. The combustion air intake I also shortened by a lot and have it inside of the case, then I got rid of the two brackets on the ends of the case. It's a lot nicer, and I haven't had any issues at all with mine out here in Colorado at high elevations

      Thanks! I'll readjust my exhaust. Never thought about upgrading the fuel line. Definitely will look into it!

    Good to know. I have a larger fold out hard top clam shell style tent that I had in high winds and I thought it was going to twist itself to pieces (it's a premium brand). Also reminded me of sleeping on a boat because the tent was causing my FJ to rock all night.
    I don't really need all the space that the larger tent affords so I'm thinking of changing to something else.

    Additional question....do you find that having the hinges on the inside makes closing the tent more of a process? I've seen both versions of this style tent ( x hinge on the inside and x hinge on the outside) and some have implied that you have to do more tucking of fabric with the style with the hinge on the inside because the hinge keeps the fabric from folding into the tent a bit during the closing procedure. A quicker close up&put away is one reason I'm considering switching from a Clam Shell to a wedge.

      I actually talked about this in my latest video of the 4x4CO nimbus. Check it out!
      I agree. It’s tougher to close the tent since the hinges are in the way. Not a big deal during the summer but during winter it’s somewhat a pain since your fingers are frozen lol

    For the nimbus how’s the light suppression during the morning? Is it pitch black or can you see some light? TIA

      @tim.muangkeo  3 месяца назад

      It's decent. It's definitely not pitch black inside. The canvas is orange and when the sun hits it glows. In a way, it's dim orange light so it wakes you up soothingly

    Find a way to keep your heater hose wrapped up, might give you more heat..
    I used a quiet gas generator.
    110 power heater with no house being outside.
    I LIKE YOU GUYS SET UP
    BY THE WAY MANG...

      Thanks! I've been hearing the same advice. I was also advised to get a bigger duct for better air flow

    Did you manage to eliminate that rattling noise? I've recently set up the same configuration and considering getting tent mounting feet from Prinsu to prevent metal-to-metal contact between the rack and the tent. I'm curious if you've discovered any alternative solutions?

    • @tim.muangkeo
      @tim.muangkeo  5 месяцев назад +1

      I have not! Glad I'm not the only one with this issue lol I however discovered what may be the root cause though. My middle crossbar on the prinsu rack is where I'm hearing the rattle come from. A slight nudge will cause it to squeak. I bought a neopreme tape to apply on the bar but haven't put it on just yet. Will let you know how it goes

    Nice job. Got my eye on that tent. Wish it was a little lighter. How did you manage with the fuel pump ticking noise from the heater?

    • @tim.muangkeo
      @tim.muangkeo  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yea I agree It's a bit heavy. Honestly, the fuel pump isn't very loud. I hear the wind outside more than the fuel pump tick

    Have you had the tent in high winds? Curious how the x hinges and structure will do in high wind scenario.

    • @tim.muangkeo
      @tim.muangkeo  5 месяцев назад

      I have. Stay tuned for a full review video! The hinges held up very well. The only thing I didn't really like was the zippers rattling all night. The tent itself withstood the high winds
