For some people regular bikes are white-coded. Fixed gear represents a way to get into cycling for brown people that isn't white-coded. Plus they're cheap and easy to maintain.
Its fun, great to ride in cities because of the control you have over the rear wheel. Almost never have to take it to the shop and in my opinion takes more skill to efficiently ride a track bike.
