The shutter speed doesn't determine how many times your shutter opens (that's the frame rate), it determines how much time the shutter is open. Each of those 24 frames is captured at 1/48ths of a second, which gives that "natural" motion blur to each frame. You could still shoot at 30, 60, or 120 fps and keep the 1/48 speed and still get that blur. Inversely, you could shoot at 24fps and crank up the shutter speed to 1/100 and get little to no motion blur at all because the shutter is open for a very short amount of time, which in turn send very little light into the sensor. But that's another topic... :)
OK, yeah, I know that the shutter speed doesn't determine how many times it opens but I was trying to figure out if there's an ideal speed per frame rate to get the most natural look. Because shutter speed determines motion blur and 1/48s looks good at 24fps. Why does everyone use 1/120s for 60fps if the motion blur at 1/48 looks better? Does it have something to do with the fact that at 60fps one frame is 1/60s long and so at 1/48s the shutter opens longer than one frame? I have no idea... At 24fps, 1/24 still looks smooth but if you go slower, 1/15s for example, it looks choppy. Like every frame is cut off or something. Is that because the shutter speed is slower than how long one frame is and it cuts it of or something? 1/15s is longer than 1/24s... Do you get what I'm trying to say? My brain starts to overheat now... 😂 I was never top of the class in the very technical photography classes. And that's why I was trying to calculate some stuff but I'm bad at math and I got lost... 😉 Oh, and by the way, thanks for watching and commenting! Always want to learn something! 🙏
@@JorisHermans No, I get what you're trying to say. 😂 The reason why it's advisable to double your shutter speed according to your frame rate is capture speed. 1/48 at 24fps will produce the realistic real-world blur because it imitates what's known as persistence of vision. Our eyes don't actually SEE movement, our eyes see things in a static way. Only it takes time for the image to get to our brains and let us know what we're actually seeing. By the time we processed that information, our eyes are already feeding the brain with the next "frame". So the static images blur into one another and "simulate" motion blur. So when shooting at a higher frame rate (60fps) and doubling the shutter speed (1/120s) the camera can do something our eyes can't - see things frame by frame. When it comes to the math of it all, think of it this way. Video is meant to capture movement. So when shooting at any frame rate, you want each frame to have it's own distinct movement. Otherwise, just take a picture and slap it on your timeline. 😄 So when shooting movement at 24fps, you want each of those frames to capture a piece of that movement. Sure, having a 1/24s shutter will accomplish that, but that would imprint a longer movement into one frame (blur). I know, 1/24th of a second doesn't seem that long to us, but it is to a camera. And when you slow down that shutter speed (1/15s), a lot more movement would have to be imprinted into a single frame. And if we do the math, 1/15th of a second means a second is divided into 15. So when you shoot at a frame rate of 24fps (24 times a second) - the math doesn't work out. So what does the camera do? It duplicates frames to compensate for those other frames you are asking it to make. If you look at the 24fps footage you shot at 1/15s and go through it frame by frame, you'll see that there are 9 frames that do not have movement from their previous frame. 😮 Which is why the footage is choppy. So shooting 120fps at a slow shutter speed will just defeat the purpose because when you slow down that footage, you'll get duplicate frames resulting in choppy footage. I know, I know... this has turned into quite a read, but I'm doing my best to make sense of this as well. Hope I helped. And great job on your videos. I always look forward to watching them when they come out. 😊
Your videos are so helpful!!! I’ve watched a bunch now and am learning tons. I film a lot of sit down videos and am struggling sooo hard on video quality which is insane because I have good cameras and lenses and decent natural light 😩 it must be my settings that I need to sort out so these tips are super helpful. All I want is crisp and clear videos... it’s my main 2021 goal lol
Thank You Joris. really detailed explaination about the color profile and shutter speed. really love your works here. Major respects 🙏😊 oh well, hello guys. Im a RUclipsr and Filmaker from Malaysia 🇲🇾.
Very nice explanation, now i can record my stupid videos on youtube cinema like ish quality...cuz now i have no clue ..well few mins ago now i get fps aperture
First - I like your style, thank you for your videos, very usefull. Second - I'm very interested in M50/video , slow motion with M50 and edit slow motion , product B-roll (lens, lights, movements, focus, etc), also filmming with phone&gimbal
I’ll be off topic but what would you recommend for a great photography lens? Efm 22mm, sigma 16mm, or 85mm f/1.8? Mostly looking for taking pictures but vids as well. Idc about the price tho just need some suggestions for awesome blurred backgrounds pics
Those are all great choices so it kind of depends on your style. I love the 22mm for photography and studio videos. However, I find it not wide enough for vlog style videos. It’s just too close in the face. And an 85mm is one of my favorites for portraits 😊👊🏻
