I had an absolute shit day on the course with my instructor. He gave me some extra range balls after our lesson to hit and I still struggled. Came home and search YT for some tips and found this and I was making contact again and hitting on my target in the backyard. Felt so good I wanted to go back to the range. Thanks for this video
Love this concept thank you. As I think about it, it makes sense from a physics perspective as well. The further away from the ball I stand the further I have to rotate, with more effort required. As an ice skater moves from a bent over spin to a vertical spin, the speed increases dramatically. I am guessing with more upright posture driven by standing closer to the ball, it would/could make it easier for me to rotate through the ball. Looking forward to experimenting with this on the range.
Hi awesome video. So right when I do lift my arms it so much easier which I've done but loose that feeling and figure out why. Now I know. I will watch this video before going to the course each time. Many thanks 😊
thx so much for this vid ...i tend to do exactly what you were saying getting too flat. this reminded me to be more upright and its amazingly helpful...!
Can you share, again, that tip about how to keep the lead arm connected to the body by using the trailing arm on the backswing to put it in position for that slingshot effect? I can't seem to re-find it in your lesson archives. That seems to work so brilliantly for me with irons. Would like to see that lesson, again, as a reminder. Really enjoying your short and to-the-point lessons. Thanks!
Russ, this video is a great 'MAC DADDY', looking at you from the front do..., almost like a metronome ~ tetter totter dip of that L shoulder and L knee bend, ....R arm pulling the L arm across and up. ...then letting the arms drop through the swing with an ' ALMOST IDENTICAL ' tetter totter metronome dip to the R as the arms drop and swing through, ...REALLY REALLY HELPS THE ROTATION~belly forward & L shoulder upward for the POSE AT FINISH !!! The simplest, micro tetter to the left and again to the right is almost undetectable
Gotta admit, the past 1 month, I've significantly increased my strike using irons, woods and driver simply by just standing closer and taller. I gained more distance with irons and reduce slice with driver with this new setup.
One thing I notice when you demonstrate the wrong backswing is that horizontal turning brings the head and even the spine over the right (trail) foot and even outside of it. It is pretty much impossible to get all that weight back over the ball on the downswing and the result will be a fat strike behind the ball and/or a hook or push right depending on how wristy you get. The backswing you demonstrate will keep your head and spine correctly over the ball, which at first can feel odd, like a reverse pivot, but is not.
Very good video! It would really help me if you would not hit the ball quite as much but show the entire swing in a slow motion sequence in order to see exactly what you are doing. 😊
This old lady’s swing gives a good idea of the sequence - weight shift/hips first which pulls arms along : ruclips.net/user/shortsnX8CPzRj6L8?si=1amz9C3kjwpNHwsM
Or this swing, always more informative to watch a good lady’s swing as they have to get technique correct, more so than men who can compensate for poorer technique with muscles : ruclips.net/user/shortsBVnBTgjY2FI?si=IP6vEmgjrHUv8SBY
Funnily enough, I got so fed up yesterday trying to perfect my swing, weight forward, getting through the ball bla bla bla, I did the Moe Norman swing for a while just for fun. It is actually quite relaxing and I swung much better when I went back to my PGA swing😂
He may have been a premier ball striker no doubt but for me anyway whenever I feel too far away from the ball it’s almost like in baseball reaching for a pitch well outside the strike zone. You look at the pros today especially with the shorter irons and they stand remarkably close to the ball. That feels the best to me.
Using this method is insane. Unless you have the dynamic rotation ability to achieve good ball striking, that is .Standing further from the ball allows less restrictions. Your shoulders, hips and legs are free to do their thing. Not everyone has the capability to contort their body, in such a small space, and expect the ball to be struck well. Good for you, and your achievements with this back breaking swing method.

This lesson is dynamite ... already watched it 3 times and it keeps on giving.

Simply explained, Thanks Russell !!!

Love the Freddie Couples Rhythm of your swing !!!

Does the standing taller and lifting the club up apply to the driver as well ??? Cheers

Superb explanation😊

my problem exactly thanks for identifying it

Can I apply this to driver too?
Good stuff!
So helpful

can you please explain when exactly I should use my arms, hip and chest rotation in the downswing? I always feel like I am using my arms too much.

@@AndrewDCDrummond Thank YOU 👍
If only Moe Norman knew this !

Well done Russell 👏
If you do this, would you by nessesity, change the lie on your irons? Thanks.
More than likely yes. I had to flatten my irons 3 degrees!
The greatest ball striker that ever lived, Moe, Norman, I had a single plane swing. Look how far away he stood from the ball.
If you want to practise all day ,every day……not me.
Do you know how many balls he hit per day? More in a month than you probably hit in 5 yrs.🦃

O so basically you have no athleticism...that must suck
