Hughes has great skill but I can't stand his vocal mannerisms, especially in a Purple setting. That incredibly fat and juicy Blackmore sound. A true master of the Strat/Marshall combination. He sounded different from year to year and his style changed quite a bit through the various incarnations (mk's) of Deep Purple. Did he ever use the tremolo arm after 1973? In 1970-72 he was quite active with it, sometimes using it to extremes during soloing. By 1974 that part was abandoned. Perhaps it had to do with the new material.
Remember when Tony Soprano was in that coma when Junior shot him? His wife brought a stereo into his room & played him "Smoke on The Water". It brought a mob boss back to life............... That's BADASS! 👍

This is a good version, but personally I prefer the great version and performance on the live album "Made in Japan". This album "Made in Japan" is considered by specialized music critics as one of the best sounds and live performance. This album is from "Make II".

By far the worst solo that Ritchie ever played to Smoke On The Water. 50% was on one note, what was he thinking? I'm sure the whoop Hughes does is to cue in Coverdale at the start. The two singers sound good together on the choruses. Paiceys drumming is superb and Jon gives it everything on his solo God rest him. I'm not sure David's voice really suits this song, Glenn's voice is closer to Gillan's in tone. Glenn never liked performing MK2 songs but realised he had to for the fans. Their version of Space Truckin' is pretty awful: David sings the high parts downward, when Glenn should have screamed them. And Ritchie misses his cue back into the riff while Glenn turns to Jon and laughs. Ritchie flashes a rare smile of embarrassment.
