    Hey guys, I was motivated to make this video since I saw so many watch shops offering financing options on watches. Personally, I think anyone who needs to finance a watch in order to buy it should not be getting the watch, as I believe it would be financially irresponsible to do so. Of course, this is my opinion and I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic below. Thanks for all your support. Almost at 5k subscribers!

      Although there are cases where it makes sense. Like when the rates are so low that having money invested somewhere else and paying off the purchase in installments results in more money on your side in the end.
      But that's really only a good idea when you can afford both options.
      Don't finance it if you wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise.

    everything that we don't need (but we want) doesn't deserve financing. That including watches. My 30 dollar Casio are more accurate than expensive mechanical watch (with even more function). But I cannot use it on a formal occasion. So i bought another watch (which is still friendly to my budget), an SNK375 Seiko 5, for merely 100 dollars (in my country, everything imported is considerably more expensive). I bought something according to my savings and income, and buying luxury watch with financing is a big no no for me.

    • @TeddyBaldassarre

      Totally agree with you, my friend. It is all based on what we can afford and at the end of the day, it is just a watch. I love the Seiko 5 line, great choice!

      thanks! Yes, it's really bang for the buck piece :) Quite accurate and reliable. BTW, talk about luxury / mid end piece, maybe the only affordable alternative are vintage piece. I recently bought a Seiko Lord Matic Hi Beat (1970), which is two level below Grand Seiko when it is new. Still affordable at +/- 130 dollars. But yes, vintage piece are quite risky if you did not know the seller :P

    Great advice, Teddy. My first rule is to never pay retail for a watch! I have a peeve with many so called trusted sellers and the hip web dealers, chrono and even e-bay commercial full time hustlers since they are usually grossly overpriced. If new go Jomashop or grind hard with cash at AD's. Do not be intimidated at AD's. As to vintage, do not overlook large antique bazaars like the Rose Bowl in Pasadena or like venues in big cities. Best Regards, JP

    100% TRUTH!!! The real one for me was, "..there are so many other ways to invest your money if the objective is to get a return on the investment.."; Buy a watch if it is something you feel passionate about, something you would enjoy & most importantly, something that brings pleasure and happiness when you wear it. I completely agree with saving the money first, then buying the watch.. the price may go down before the amount needed is reached. Secondly, once I have the funds ready to go, I personally use a credit card to get the points then transfer the money into my account to make the CC payment. Cheers guys & Teddy.. THANK YOU so much for the videos. I truly enjoy them!

    • @MrAhuraMazda
      @MrAhuraMazda 6 лет назад +1

      A "fashion" watch or anything under like 2 grand is the same thing. You're not getting into "horology" at that price point. No one gives a shit about a Orient Bambino or a Seiko, especially not watch lovers. Doesn't matter if Orient makes their cheap shit movement "in house." I can buy a Seiko diver at Kohls, right next to their off brand Polos and polyester dress suits. If you like Squales or Tissots, go buy them. They're better bang for your buck than Gucci watches. But do it for you. If you're acrually a watch fan or into horology, no one gives a fuck about anything in that tier. Save your money like a real watch lover, and buy something nice.
      It's fine to be against "fashion" watches. But holding up a Tissot or Seiko and calling out other brands is embarrassing yourself. You're not impressing people with a real legitimate interest in watches either. You can wear your Citizen or Tissot with your JC Pennys suit, and buy them together in the same store

    • @TheNanofiber
      @TheNanofiber 6 лет назад +2

      Well if you are interested in watches and horology you should probably care about what you wear. As for impressing others if that's why you buying watches you better have a lot of money for it hehe. And of course Seiko/Orient is better than a some fashion brand that just slaps a quartz and a label. Depends what you value I guess. If you are really interested in watches you should care what's inside. On ebay $2k can go a long way to get something nicer than a quartz with a Gucci label.

    Like your Videos Teddy. and Thanks for the reply. As an older person on a fixed income this last twenty years. Building a collection is my main interest and hobby. I don't spend much on Recreation. And have to keep to simple foods. And of course I don't drink. Smoke. Etc. I can get as much enjoyment from a Seiko as I can from an Omega or Rolex so Watch collecting can be for many varied types of people . Great advice about buying what you can afford. I moved to the USA from Europe, and I get the impression people here splurge on unnecessarily expensive cars. Young people with BMWs that in Europe would be driven by middle aged doctors. I bought an old Honda CRV cash, i knew i'd spend 1k for repairs etc, but at least no monthly payments for years to come. I freelance and money can come and go. Also in the USA even with a steady job someone can be laid off without notice, unlike in the EU. My credit is really good, more than 800, but I live frugally. With watches it is often best to buy used, as they can be resold for a similar amount, and you may lose 20 / 40 dollars of eBay / PayPal fees. I think my rile of thumb is i should not spend for a watch more than an average week of average income, or best not more than half a week. I have 10 credit cards, always pay full on time,I have categories where I get 2% to 5% cash back. I think the cash back from conscientious credit card use can be used to bay luxury / unnecessary items like watches. Timex look somehow pedestrian and too common. If quartz is not an issue I suggest taking a look at Momentum watches. I bought the Momentum Flatline at almost half price on Huckberry, put on a nice flieger strap and it looks nice and thin. Rotating straps is also a good way to make a watch look different for different occasions. I have a watchmaker in Chinatown NY who services mechanical watches for 35 / 60 dollars for 3 hand simple movements. Years ago I bought a Universal Geneve Polerouter in bad conditions for 175, got it cleaned / serviced. just sold it for 495. I sold it because i have another one with a more legible ,more minimalistic dial. I see too many people wearing those boring oversized DW or is it WD fashion watches. I can not like the Seiko 5s, because of the Superman logo on the dial and non hacking movement. Orient Mako II would be amazing if the day / date window was the same color of the dial instead of white. It is a great looking watch otherwise that can be both dressy and rugged. I looked at the orient Bambino, but hands are too short. Certina watches look nice, affordable and Swiss. Laco has nice watches too.

  • @13noman1
    @13noman1 5 лет назад

    Second those points and take 'em one step further. Finance, by and large, is generally unwise albeit necessary at times. I honestly think that outside of a house purchase, no other financing is necessary or at the very least should be minimized. A car, at heart, is transportation with a wide range of choices at all price points; folks often move upmarket and then spend a small fortune on finance charges. Education, too, has price points. The value of education is almost solely dependent on the effort the student puts in, not the cost or "name" of the school. Some states now offer free tuition (to community colleges) followed by transfer for a Bachelor's degree -- at a total cost less than full 4 year at "Pricey U".

  • @MrRea112
    @MrRea112 6 лет назад

    Sage advice Teddy. I’d add that while one should not view a watch as an investment, your advice points clearly to the need to buy wisely - to protecting one’s outlay once a decision is made. Certain watches offer far better value preowned (if one buys at the right price so some homework is necessary) plus your advice on due diligence on the seller and the watch.
    The problem has arisen from the dramatic rise in prices of used Daytona’s, Subs, Nautilus’s and Royal Oaks creating a gold rush for “investors”. This can be an illusion.
    I see a part 2 to this video is in order.

    Been watching you for a very long time and I just want to say, I love all the work that you are doing! I hope you hit your 1 million mile stone soon 😁 On that note, one thing I'd like to add about the first point is that while I agree that you should not finance, I think people who are responsible with their money and want to purchase their dream watch through financing should pay off at least 70 to 80 percent of the watch. If they can comfortably do that, then I'd say financing is the way to go. I'm also referring to 0 percent APR 😂

    Question is, what's the difference between financing a watch and saving up for it? If you don't have the disposable cash to buy it right then and there, one can argue that your saving can be used for something more useful.

    • @NetAndyCz
      @NetAndyCz 6 лет назад +6

      Of course it can, but human beings are not as rational as you might think, sometimes we want something because we just like it not because t is useful and will make us more money:) The difference in saving up for something is that you do not end up in debt, so you will not pay more for watch than you have and if something happens, you will not get into as much trouble as if you are on top of all your regular expenses pay for expensive watch as well.

    • @PT111111
      @PT111111 6 лет назад +3

      NetAndyCz I was challenging Teddy and his idea that saving money is better than financing. I personally think if you don't have the disposable income to spend on luxury item, financing or saving for it amounts to the same thing.
      That said, people finance stuff all the time, car, house, etc. One or two years of financing for a watch is not a big deal if you have a steady job or own a business, and you get to have that dream watch now. Sometimes by the time you saved enough money, the watch might already be discontinued.
      Perhaps another way to do it is lay-buy, where you pay the shop money while they save the watch for you until you pay it off.

  • @agaperion

    I wouldn't recommend financing a watch either. However, certain timepieces can be more analogous to a tangible asset like real estate rather than a consumer product like a car. For example, Rolex appreciation beat the equity market by up to 6% over the past 30 years, model depending.

    1. Watches are bad investment vessels, don't buy a watch as investment.
    2. Watches are meant to be worn, don't buy a watch "for a collection" or "just because" with no intention to wear it.
    3. Don't buy a watch that costs more than you can get out of the pocket right now. If the price is measured in months of your salary, it's a no, buying on credit is a stupid and irresponsible thing to do. No one will think bad of you if you can't afford a $5000 watch. If your style, taste and common sense are alright, a Timex of choice is fine too.
    4. Don't buy a "fashion" watch. A watch should last for years to come. Fashions come and go. Those who don't care about watches, won't care about what's on your wrist, but those who know a thing about watches will think that you're a douche/tool/schmuck, they won't tell you though.
    5. Don't buy a "high-maintenance" watch you are not ready to maintain. Don't buy that old junk with "I think it has vintage vibes" you are not capable of appreciating and restoring.
    6. Don't buy a watch from shady, questionable or unverified dealers.
    7. Don't buy a watch you don't like or uncomfortable with, even if all the internet "experts" tell you "it's a cool watch, man".

    I would add to this list, Never buy anything from someone who knows nothing about the watch, or watches in general. When I was looking to buy my Tudor Pelagos, the first guy I talked to (a private dealer on chrono24) literally knew nothing about what he was selling whatsoever, all he told me was “good watch, good condition, good price, you buy” I of course did not buy the watch, and continued to search, after SIX MONTHS I ran into a coworker who was wearing a Panerai, when asked what he has in his collection, the Pelagos was one of them, exactly the one I wanted too. He was knowledgeable, had a true love for horology, and priced it well to sell to me.
    Moral of the story is. BE PATIENT!

    Is Amazon a safe place to buy watches?

    • @TeddyBaldassarre
      @TeddyBaldassarre  6 лет назад +2

      Amazon is technically made up of “grey market” dealers since they are not technically authorized to sell the brand. That said, they are safe to buy from and I have in the past. I would just stick to relatively cheaper watches when buying there. Also, be sure to check the seller and reviews. I purchased my SKX and orient from amazon and had no issues.

    A watch can be an investment if you buy for an important job interview. Sometimes the proper dress watch can compliment your wardrobe. What you want to do in an interview is look successful, and expensive looking watch can work in your favor. The interviewer has no idea who you are (most of the time). A good impression is always a good move.

    Of course your advice is good .But its not the way I do it .As a person who has been unwell My Whole Life.I have never had much money. But collecting since a boy I have collected many Items now valuable. So I have decided to sell these items to fund a Watch Collection. Sometimes I have raised the Money for my next purchase. But sometimes I do buy on credit and sell more of my collection and pay myself back. Here Are My Rules .Do your homework. Learn all you can on the models you want .Watch and wait .Go for condition. Most watch dealers pay 25% off new retail on a watch So you need to not pay much more. Check all AD's as you can get Bargains. And some do Lay-by ( lay-away ) giving you 3 months (or more) to pay interest free .if you have a credit card make sure it insures all your purchases. As a back up to ebay. Have a good watchmaker that can inspect your new watch after purchase. For Authenticity and falts. I just hope you have as much fun and luck as I have.

    That 'don't finance' part should be applied to cars too. If you have to pay your Mercedes in like 3 years, better buy a Toyota. Financing tends to bring you down in a spirale of always wanting the latest models, hiding the fact that you don't have the means.

    Never trust BBB ratings. I'm saying the following with absolute certainty as I have done so when performing brand management tasks at companies I have worked for: Ratings can be bought. Now, that is not to say that every business with an A+ BBB rating has done this but proceed with caution. Getting an A+ rating is surprisingly easy once you know how to do it. Lastly, please do not contact me on how to guarantee an A+. I only provide that info for employers and my only employer for the foreseeable future is me.
    Great advice otherwise, Teddy!

    A watch isn't an investment and watches CAN depreciate in value. Which is exactly why you SHOULD finance them. Its the same for a car, why put £2000+ into an asset that over the next 4 years is going to rapidly depreciate? That makes absolutely no sense. I'll put £2000 into this now and in 4 years it will be worth £1000. Even if I have saved up for a watch and could afford to buy it outright, I wouldn't. It's a simple model that most people who know about business use. Finance the depreciating asset, and invest the cash you have saved up to make more money.
