That could still mean that it's too tight but withotu symptoms and I can picture all sorts of issues with rack damage if the backlash is not correct on the rack and pinion. Apparently there is some kit you can buy to measure the backlash properly while adjusting the cover screw but it costs best part of £2000! Maybe a job best left to the professionals with the coprrect equipment unless you're getting rid of the car soon.

@@pignapoke6772 hi. I don't think so.
Hi is this same procedure for the bmw f30? Thanks
Exactly the same.
What's the difference in. Cap the socket type and the gasket?

Nope
Thanks a lot of the vid. I just got the part i ordered. I have a question please how do you fix that blue spring with the part? I can't see anywhere to attach theme together? Am i missing something?
1. Install the bushing
2. Put the spring
3. Install on the cap that rubber part
4. Tighten the cap
@@TheJourneyofanBMWOwner hi how tight does it have to be?
Would this also work for hydraulic rack, say f10 m550d?
Sir, our 2014 x3 sometimes the steering feels wacky loose, then drives fine and have a whine, thought it was alternator, but not. Ours has 101,000 miles on it. Your thoughts please.
Wheel bearings are usually the problem with wine and also the ac compressor.
First noise was with ignition off , next was with ignition on...the rack as i can see is electric so I have some questions...
Both tests were made with the engine off.
Hi. Could you know the part number for the same kit but for an f10 with chassis D387218? I bought the one in video but it doesn’t fit my f10 😢
Hi, TD.
I either can't find the piece for you. There's nothing on NewTis about it.
Sorry 😞

It is possible that you tighten the cap to much. It should be tight as the old one.
Awesome video . Thx!

Hi wondering if anyong has doen this for for a BMW F25 2011 X3. Any tips getting it from the bottom? tks!

Was there any symptoms similar to warped rotors or uneven brake pad wear? Ie shuddering steering when braking?

Hi, can you tell ME how much did you tighten that bolt? I did The same operation and my rack blocks now and then. Thanks
Usor...

Does anyone have info on the 3 point tool to loosen / tighten the cap that hold this bush in place?
U can buy it from Ebay
Great vid. Thanks. I have the same problem, but when the engine is on ! Is this the same issue ? I read that this kit is only working when the engine is off...
Do this first, is the cheapest start in finding the problem. Also if you hear some noise up front while driving over the speed bump, it could be this also. But for more information find a garage to check your bushings...
@@TheJourneyofanBMWOwner thanks !!! I will.
@@TheJourneyofanBMWOwner Hello Sebastos. Could you share a bit why you advise to go to BMW to change it ? Any risks ?
@@mc30052 i assume no risk about the change. I don't know how technical are my viewers and what they are doing. That's why. For me was easy...
Did you jack the car? Do you think its easier to do this from the engine bay or from below by removing the engine tray?
No jack was involved in this video. In my case, was easy from the engine bay.
@@TheJourneyofanBMWOwner i haven't had a chance to attempt it but looking online, for the f3x you can only get access from below the car. Anyway, nice vid!
On 3.0d you can only get to it from underneath. You need a special 3 prong tool and a 24mm spanner and a bent leg pliers to pull it out.👍
What manufacturer do you have the steering gear thyssenkrupp or ZF?
Thyssenkrupp. I found manufacturer information from ISTA service manual. I will try this as soon as part assembly get in.
What other grease can I use?
Only BMW
Haha, try that on a 6 cylinder! Has to be done from below then.
It Doesnt. Airbox out and you can reach it easy!

@@dopiaza2006 ahh could depend on LHD or RHD. No issues RHD.

Hi can somebody help, I have replaced the thrust piece on my steering rack and tightened. However the knocking noise has gone but my steering is not centre. It is half way turned for it to be straight. Can someone please help. Bmw f30 2015
You did something wrong. When u changed the thrust the steering moved. That was the single and most important thing to be aware of.
Did you tried to remove the thrust and put the steering wheel in the right position? How are the wheels, are them aligned?
@@TheJourneyofanBMWOwner hi it must’ve moved when we put the thrust piece in. It was closing time so I took the car as it is. Car drives fine and certainly feels better but the steering wheel itself has to be turned for the actual wheels to be straight. I have ordered the special too as the mechanic struggled to open it using axle grinder key. Will it harm my car driving it like this.
The tool will take a few days to come. The trust piece was put on while the car was high up on the ramp. He’s accessed it from the bottom of the car.
Is there something like this for xdrive cars? Specially e90

Hi, great video. Where did you buy it?
You can find it on Ebay. Search the code. 👌
It’s only $30. Google it
And I see many f30s every week, some of them has more clunky some of them less clunking knocking. But when ever you start the engine the disgusting knocking sound disappearing. I'm pretty sure there is something else that knocking. And apparently this repair kit doesn't do,,, doesn't change anything while you driving.
Kindly what's the part number or what do I search for on Google?
Hi! The PN is written on the box and also inserted in the video. Thx
I took an appointment at BMW dealer, to change this bushing. They didn't even know about this. When I explained to them they were surprised. The part cost $58.00 CAD, and they said approximately 45 minutes of job. I would do it myself but i don't have a tool.
what was the charge from BMW?
@@chipschug1720 don't touch it, it doesn't change anything, it's only worked when the engine is off. But if you have free play when engine running it won't fix it. I see many f30s every week and some of them has horrible knocking sound when engine of, when i start engine it's completely going away. But my 328 has some free play when engine running and i moving slowly. But if you want just fix the knock when you just siting in the car and playing with steering wheel then yes you can change it. But it doesn't change anything while you driving. They charge me 3.5 hours they said they did computer adjustment for steering rack as well. They stealership.
