Now this is how news should be paced: three headlines, titles and introductions done in less than 30 seconds. Nowadays, it takes over two minutes to string it all out. The graphics were fantastic for the time. BBC News really needs a new look nowadays.
Wow A very clear high picture resolution it looks like it could easily be the original BBC archive video master broadcast copy. One of the best quality picture and audio of a domestic home video captured piece of personal home video TV archive!
Always impressed by the fact that this footage is from 1999, it looks something from around 2010, I wonder if they realized that when they rebranded in 1999.
1999 was the year we all went digital crazy and so everyone wanted that crystal clear look. DVDs were slowly becoming the norm. Sky Digital had launched, On Digital was there. 1999 was a year of optimism. This is why BBC News revamped, ITV News revamped (News at Ten axed didn't help them though) and even Channel 4 News moved into a new studio.
Very nice footage. A few years ago there was a lower quality VHS rip of this on here, which I haven't been able to find for years. It contained the last few mins of the 'flags' era, the small promo break, and then the point where this tape comes in. Recorded live obviously but its long gone, whish I'd of grabbed it.
The weird era where the studio broadcasts were 16:9 but the sourced images were mostly 4:3 that was slightly zoomed in. The quality drop was really noticeable on a CRT
i love how if you changed the Lowerthirds/UI/indents to the modern ones thats the only difference in 24 years apart from studio (they still report and talk the same and everything even the title cards how they layout stats and do the b-roll and interviews) bbc really went if it ain't broke don't fix it / change it 😂
I believe so. They would have shown an overnight service from BBC World and launched the new look at 6am for the UK audience. A couple of times Jane Hill mentions the new look.
To the best of my knowledge, yes that would the case. It’s a shame I didn’t start the recording a little earlier so we could see the crossover between the flags then the red look.
I don’t remember but I expect there was a joint overnight service from the BBC World studio (did they still have the flags at that point?), then perhaps some weather and short promos, then the countdown appeared which we know and love. If I find my original tape I’ll check the beginning. However I’m having a terrible job getting them to play back. They are degrading.
@@vhs_videohomesystem BBC World still had the flags at that point. So whenever they do an overnight they just play the News 24 headline vamp and the use the national news titles. Or use the national news titles first then the BBC World headline vamp.
@@minitrilhas Yeah if UK broadcasts were captured digitally they hold up really well. We were a little behind with the HD takeup because 576i PAL looked pretty decent already, in an era where most HDTVs were only 720p
It’s hard to know where the analogue process ends and the digital begins. It was recorded from a direct digital source onto a broadcast quality analogue tape. Then years later I transferred that analogue tape onto a domestic digital tape (camcorder style). All SD.
On the rolling news channel there isn’t a closing theme, mostly. The news presenter would hand to the weather presenter and then there were promos and back to the countdown for the top of the hour. Closing titles would be used if there was a self-contained show like Dateline or World Business Report but they would be that show’s brand. However, BBC World does use closing titles and music on news bulletins. And of course the BBC One news bulletins do too.

BBC News 24 was perfect, and so what did the BBC do, ruin it. First taking off the "24" from the name and losing the channel a decent name in 2008. And now lumping it with BBC World News and now the channel is a mixing bowl of programming from BBC World and BBC News. What a mess it is now in 2024. In 1999, it was perfect. If it ain't broke DON'T fix it.

So is the new look fitting today?
That's genuinely great! I've never seen this in high quality.
In my opinion it was the best looking countdown, titles and set. I’m not sure I like the aubergine coloured captions.
If this was put through an AI upscaler it would look absolutely incredible
@@GameRoof1 I wish I had the time and ability to do that.
Just send me the money instead 😉 That’s a great tip, thanks. I’m going to look into this software 👍

It must have been quite a moment for anyone watching live. What a transformation. And a shift in paradigm when it came to news music.
ruclips.net/video/BJ-isQgxYIk/видео.html this, perhaps?
@draconicruns No final blast of the old News24 flags on this clip unfortunately.

Do you have any clips of the rebrand in December 2003?
Good video! It that date on 6am is first new look?!

Wow, how fantastic. Did HD broadcasts in the UK start in 1998? In my country (Brazil) they only started in 2007
BBC News became HD in 2013. This recording isn’t HD, but a high quality SD copy.
I understood. I believe I made a mistake because of the country's SD format, which is in widescreen, in my country the SD format is 480i

Do you know if this was recorded from a digital broadcast? That would explain why the video quality is so high.

No analogue channels in the UK broadcast in 16:9.

what do you mean by DV Cam?
It's a brand of digital cassette tape. Google “Sony DVCAM tape”
