    I saw Def Leppard on July 6th,1983 on the Pyromania World Tour. I still remember Phil being on the right side of the stage as I was looking at them, and he had on camo trousers, no shirt, and seargent stripes on his arms. Joe was wearing the sleeveless Union Jack of course. It was the loudest concert I've ever been to. My ears were ringing for 4 days, and it kicked ass!

    That X-Troyer may be the coolest electric guitar I've ever seen - I instantly want it. Here's hoping Jackson makes it available to the public at some point. It's marvelous.
    Cool to see this interview with Collen. He is surely one of the best and most underrated soloists and part-writers in rock history.

    I used to work for JHS in the 90s,and Phil and the boys used to turn up regularly for their Jackson guitars when on tour here,all were mega nice down to earth northern lads,with great sense of humour,miss em!Rock on Phil,massively underrated but such a talent.Installed quite a few of these pickups,thanks Larry.

      I have a lot of respect for Phil as a person as well as a guitar player. He flew halfway around the world to be at (former Loverboy bass player) Scott Smith's celebration of life.

    • @GrumpyMJK
      @GrumpyMJK 5 лет назад

      @@rickcheyne I was really sad to hear of Smith's passing.The whole band (Loverboy) never got the credit as musicians that they deserved. I guess because their material was aimed at top 40 radio back in the day.

    • @aquilarossa5191
      @aquilarossa5191 5 лет назад

      I was the same. I liked Zep, Purple, Maiden, Rainbow, Dio, Priest etc. Def Leppard was always very pop metal to me. It was always playing in strip clubs when we got in from sea. Now when I hear them I can't help thinking of some young lady swinging around a pole while a bunch of drunk sea dogs stare at her and then stuff money down her g-string. That's a kind of nostalgia I guess. Being the music that strippers like to get their gear off to is not what Phil would prefer to be remembered for I'd think, or maybe he would. I dunno.

    I know a tech that has been at it for 50 years. In the 70s and 80s he took so many PAF pickups out of vintage and period era guitars in exchange for these that he had a five gallon bucket full of PAF style pickups (original PAFs and T Types mostly). Nobody wanted them. Couldn't sell them for anything. Kept them around as parts (for pole pieces, covers, and magnets) until the mid 90s and just dumped the bucket eventually. Funny how the junk of one era can be the treasure of another.

I began playing on a '79 Gibson Les Paul Custom wine/gold with chainsaw case when I was 15 in '79... $1200 US brand new back in those days... LOL Too bad mine walked away in college : . ( in '88... but evil didn't keep me down too long in '90 bought a sweet used '87 Jackson Soloist USA Custom Ferrari Red at Strings and Things in Memphis... played it 25 yrs. until got another GLPC '08 Oxblood... but still cannot replace the '79.... the Jackson needs a refret and ebony repairs and possible neck rebind ... wouldn't take $20K for that beautiful gem ; . )

    that "quest for tone" Phil speaks about at the beginning (for my dad, I'm told) as a kid he chased the tone of Duane Allman/Dickey Betts, Gary Rossington/Al Collins, Lindsey Buckingham, Jimi Hendrix, etc... then he heard Stevie Ray Vaughan in the 1980s...he chased Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone from 1985 until last year when he finally found it; he has one of the first three SRV Signature Series Stratocaster which Fender ever made; it's got a Rosewood fretboard, not Pau Ferro which they're known to come with. & he has a _Cesar Diaz Modded_ 1964 Fender Vibroverb (115), a vintage Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer, a Vox King Way, MXR Line Selector, another Vintage Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer (he sometimes switches out one of the Ibanez Tube Screamers with a Boss Blues Driver), Boss Super Chorus, two Graphic Equalizers (one Boss, one MXR), several other things go into the accurate SRV tone he's finally found...

    I wonder how Phil felt about the high and dry record before he joined the band. Those were some of the greatest hard Rock riffs in the history of rock and roll that Steve and Pete came up with on high and dry. I wonder if Pete enjoys playing them songs and what his thoughts are on that record which I think is the greatest hard rock album ever made with the greatest hard rock song ever made in bringing on the heartbreak. It's sad so many people did not know who they were until powermania but I would encourage those people to go back to 1981 and listen to high and dry. It is relentless raw rock and roll from beginning to end and it's a spiritual experience to listen to it.

    When I first heard the Super, back in 76 or 77, even as a bass player I knew it was a sound that would last in guitar history. Soon after I started playing guitar. One of the first electrics had a 76 Super in it! THAT one pickup has been in every guitar with hummers ive ever had (and still have it!) A few years ago. I got another one. Tested it to compare with the old one....NO DIFF! Still us them today in my main axe.

      The best aftermarket pickup of all time. All the other great ones are also made by DiMarzio. I can't get enough of that tone. It's the tone classic rock and classic metal are made of, and these pups work great for any genre. Just look at who has used them and continues to use them. This is a design that goes back to 1972. The Super Distortion is a year older than me, and I never get tired of it. It literally feels alive.

    I've had DiMarzio pickups for years. I tried Duncans but didn't like them. I wanted to try EMG 81/85 but after hearing comparisons, I'm sticking with DiMarzio. Super Distortion will be my next purchase for an LP (China copy, but it still plays great) I have.
    I have the Tone Zone in the bridge and Air Zone in the neck of my Dillion LP copy.
    A Breed (bridge), Tone Zone (middle) and PAF PRO (I wanted the Evolution but it was on backorder so I was talked into the PAF PRO) in the neck of my Kramer Striker. And an Evolution in the bridge of my Steinberger GT Pro.
    In the mid 90s, I had an Ibanez RG-550 that I added DiMarzios to. Hard to remember but I think I had the PAF PRO and FRED in that guitar.

      Same set up on a new Charvel San Dimas ... still trying to wrap my head around these .. seems like they take TONS of distortion and stay tight.

      guitarist6494 Its kinda oof hard to put into words, but it has more of the juicy good stuff.More bass and mids or something, and yet it just screams..

      guitarist6494 I love the SD don't get me wrong. If you are using it in a short scale guitar especially like a LP. My first super 3 was in a fender "the strat" which h as s a PRS scale, etc. They rock in strats to me. The super 3 that is
