They should give control of Judo rules back to the Kodokan and get back to old rules. Which is pretty much what you described. Definitely need to start making new rules based upon actual combat.

@@retroghidora6767 The IJF forced themselves upon the Kodokan back in the 80's. According to my Japanese Sensei: It was a very political move by a bunch of second level leaders to take over control of Judo. They didn't feel following the Martial Tradition by having a descendent of Kano's in charge because he himself didn't practice Judo. Even though he was doing a good job of managing things.
At that time the top players in Japan did not participate in the Olympics or World Games. And they did not do as well.
Ever since then, they have the last word when it comes to rules. To put it mildy: They suck at it. This years they've really screwed over a lot of very dedicated Judoka all over the world. If they don't have motivation to change now, they never will.

Start with judo or wrestling
Sambo has the best grappling rule sets out of all the grappling sports. Sambo is more about giving the hardest techniques to perform a higher point system. It rewards folks for learning hard techniques and getting good at them. But yet allows grinders attempt to grind their way into points.

All Judoka are called out for this, even Ono has commented too on this. Judo is down like this because of IJF. Judo, Sambo, and BJJ are the same and can cross train.
I am from old Judo so I still taught my kids old Judo techniques.
For sure lots of Olympians have expressed similar ideas in different ways. I think the conclusion is that Judo needs to be more free.

Martial arts evolve and so do the rulesets that controll it to not go too far from the original vision.
Kano wanted upright posture and no dangerous, in his words "evil", Techniques. Kodokan and IJF stopped it from distracting too far from that vision.

@@m5a1stuart83 most of leg grabbing wasn't done in the actual old judo. only two of Kano's techniques involved leg grabs. the influx of wrestling techniques needed to be fixed for Judo to stay true to it's creator's vision.
@@TB-fm8kf Judo and Wrestling are the same. Kibisu Gaeshi, Taoshi, Morote Gari and so on are already exist in Judo Curriculum. But Kodokan make it only 40 registered for basic Judo teaching. The only leg grabbing is Sukui Nage.
The throwing and pinning rules in sport sambo are great, but the lack of chokes is a pretty significant downside.

Old judo would still rock but the combination of all, like sambo, is just on another level.

Judo's leg grab ban is in a sense less impactful in a self defense situation but still not what kano imagined.
I heard the coking thing was because Stalin didn’t like chokes. Honestly you should learn some leg locks and wrestling and see if a Judo school near you would open up Sambo classes. It has to start somewhere and maybe you can make some money on it.
The main problem is dilution for the sake of reach. Competitive judo has those limitations to protect judoka whereas traditional judo (and maybe sambo) emphasizes execution of techniques. I was learning judo at school and afterward my neighbor who’s third generation regional champion offered to teach me “real” judo. I was literally floored every time. The difference is like traditional judo runs at 120fps and competitive judo runs at 16fps. I was never good enough to go far but really appreciated especially the lower body attacks that are virtually all banned in competitive judo. I get it that leg tackles can be dangerous but it’s overly stylized.
I think things like Korean Seio-nage was for safety. The leg grabs were due to the IOC saying it looked similar to wrestling I believe or that’s the most credible reason I’ve heard.
@@t.weber64kgI also heard that the Russians and Eastern Europeans were starting to dominate the sport/art, due to their backgrounds in wrestling, so the Japanese changed the rules so it wouldn’t give them that advantage.
@@mynameisurl1073this is such a myth. They banned leg grabs because of the similarity to wrestling and because it was boring. So many guys would shoot for the legs, get sprawled and there was a stoppage in play. Eastern European and wrestling based countries are STILL winning in judo. Leg techniques like te guruma or fireman's throw, or off an initial attack are fun.
The sambo guy here made a good point on the boring double leg attacks.
Martial aspect aside, it's great that sambo overseas (at least to my knowledge) has none or almost none of the baggage it still has back here in Russia. A lot of people who train sambo are of a type, meaning they love USSR (they actually revel in its red army legacy), they are a bit too patriotic if you know what I mean, and support the current "foreign policy". And this can be felt in most if not all places where one can train sambo. It's so strange how much political flair can be present in martial arts.... I'd say it's true for most arts but especially sambo over here. And it's really a pity, because not only does it have a great ruleset but it also enriched the old judo so much by borrowing from the Eastern European and Central Asian folk wrestling styles, which one can see in judo competitions (used by say Georgian or Uzbek guys) of course but those elements are not integrated into judo in a way for everyone to learn and train.
Not gonna comment on the politics good or bad but I think nationalistic and right wing ideology is prevalent in most martial arts. I think it takes shape differently in different regions but I can definitely see where it’s upped to an extreme extent with Sambo in Russia with the aesthetics and history of the sport. I agree the rule set is great and I really love seeing the Eastern European and Central Asian style transfer into Judo and Sambo.

Nowadays are Sambo and judo clubs separate? Do judoka in Russia 2024 not have the type of lets say political demographic that the sambists have?

In Japan where I live, it's not just that : the ****ing olympics rules are respected in every dojo for training !? Why ?! I'm not planing on going to the olympics, I just want to practice judo. Just thinking about what I'm not allowed to do drives me nuts (except for dangerous techniques. I am all for maximum safety in training).

Judo competition has changed starting with its inclusion as an Olympic sport in 1964, before that the sport was a lot different, even then it did not have all the restrictions we see today, over the last 60 years it has been modified ad nauseam. Unfortunately Judo, or Sambo, whatever will be eventually will be reduced to what you see today in Judo competitions, especially the Olympics. The effect of trying to appeal to the uninformed to attract them to watch has brought some of the things we see, the other problems come from liability when people get hurt, then we add when the coaches and players game or try to game the system. The stalling when two players are closely matched, so int organizations change the penalties to get more action, and in its zeal change the competition. Even UFC has undergone changes because of liability.
I think old Judo was better for viewing so I don’t get why we don’t go back to that. I think some more ne waza would help too but I think the main thing you said is that the Olympics corrupts sports and I agree

That’s fair if you liked it I’m happy for you. I didn’t watch all of it. I just train judo and followed what I heard from the most educated judoka I know. I also saw there were calls for Japan to leave the IJF so it all seemed pretty bad.

But many Japanese people only watch the OG, so they're not up to date on the new ruleset, there was no other robbery, only the Nagayama and Garrigos mach. I watch every IJF tournament and I've practiced judo for almost 10 years so i know what am talking about.
The two things that make it easy to drop and flop in sambo still exist in Judo, 💥🔥🌟quick referee resets and no out of bounds penalties🌟🔥💥
Until they fix these two problems you'll always have the same pacing problem and mat politics of judo.

@@t.weber64kg you actually have an excellent point...sambo has a much better opportunity to bridge the gap between wrestlers BJJ guys and judoka plus it has some extremely pragmatic rules that encourage scoring.
The biggest thing that's missing is the step out point, this fundamentally changes the way you grapple
This is one of the reasons I believe you will ultimately see freestyle become the king of MMA feeder sports until MMA is accepted as an actual sport
@@BURGAWMMAeh, I think American Folkstyle and Sambo will remain dominant. Olympic wrestling styles don’t have enough emphasis on ground control which results in a lot of failure to hold people down.

Yes but you lost me at putting up Sambo style penalties as better than Judo penalties. I want a sport with FEWER penalties, not more. If someone is doing “false attacks,” do
your best to beat him as a better grappler. That’s his strategy whatever. Things I don’t like about the Sambo ruleset: please wear pants, I don’t want your sweaty thigh on my face when you’re attempting a juji gatame/ armbar. Sport Sambo should also allow strangles, which are currently disallowed. Besides that, yes I like the Sambo ruleset, especially the clean thrown ippon and throw points rule.
I don’t think fewer penalties are better. I think the proper enforcement and rules behind the penalties are better. Also I like the shorts they show off my legs I worked hard to build lol. I agree with the choking though.
The IJF doing something like Kudo would be fun but there's no shot.
They don't let guys competing in the international circuit compete in other combat sports.

One of my favorite judo coaches was a guy that grew up training sambo in Europe. And I loved his variations on judo throws.
From watching sambo I truly think it’s more old school judo than judo is. I really wish this sport would spread more in the states. We need some coaches and tournaments out there!
I am too old to compete. But I would still train sport sambo for fitness and pleasure. And I would sure put my kids in it. They wrestle already.

I agree it is definitely the way of the future. Where in the states are you? We just had nationals here in Denton Tx with people coming from all over the states. We even had Merab Dvalishvilli come out and compete and I beat him in Sport. I agree it’s more old judo than Olympic judo is. You should look up Sambo Nation if there isn’t a club by you now I’m sure there will be soon.

Kata guruma is fireman's carry throw in Самбо is called мельница and there is similar throw called бычок, in judo I think it's called Kata otoshi. Also in judo if you get third shido then is disqualification though I might be wrong. So not a big difference from Sambo 👍
Yes that is correct I believe fireman’s or Kata Gutuma is Melnitza. I believe that’s how you would spell what you put in English. Yes a third shito is disqualifying in Judo. I think the implementation of the penalties in Judo and lack of scores from them is the issue. While they are similar the finer details leads to large changes in the sport.

Personally I like the current Judo rules a lot.
I enjoy the differences between grappling sports a lot. Judo, Sambo, Kazakh Kuresi, Beach wrestling, submission grappling, Bokh, Chidaoba, Alysh, freestyle wrestling.
They all force you to get better at different stuff.
There is some truth to what you’re saying they do force you to get better at different things. I guess I would just say that modern Judo isn’t really Judo anymore and Sambo is more of an inheritor of Kano Judo than Olympic Judo.

In original Kano Judo people stood tall as they knew in an actual fight you would get knees, headbutts, groin shots, spiking elbows etc.
But the moment those were no longer allowed and people started playing the game to win instead of preparing for that life and death situation around the corner they could freely stand hunched over without reperceussions and dive for legs without repercussions.
So then you either have to accept this and they both adopt a freestyle wrestling posture or you have to take those leg grabs away to make them stand tall.
Examples of hunched over styles: freestyle wrestling, Turkish oil wrestling, Pahlvani wrestling.
Examples of tall styles: Judo, Bokh, Kazakh Kuresi, Kuresi.
I feel Sport Sambo has a perfect balance in leg grabs but also standing tall. But only because of the shorts, as in a Judo uniform you can grab the gi pants and this makes the leg grabs to OP. So as a result they both will stand hunched over and it kills all the action.
This are really good points. I think you could penalize overly bent postures which are honestly pretty prevalent in modern judo anyways and limit the time allowed to grab the pants. I definitely wouldn’t want to change the uniform for Judo that would change it too much imo.

First you could freely grab the pant legs and as a result everybody stuud hunched over to protect their legs.
Then you could grab but with limited time: it became an issue how long you could grab and if the action was performed in a fluid motion or in the few seconds tori was allowed.
Then you could no longer grab the pant legs but you could grab the legs with open hand. Then it became unclear if the person had been holding the pant legs or had used a cupped hand.
Then they said: you can grab legs but only as a counter or combination: then it became unclear if it was a fake counter or fake combo. Uke could basically fake a throw, tori would grab the leg and then get a shido.
Then they ditched the leg grabs all together and as a result people stood more tall and could initate more ashi waza because the fear of the leg grab was no longer there.
I feel unless they ditch the gi pants leg grabs don't really work in Judo.
And again.... if it would be the same sport as Sambo? Then why even bother keeping them seperate??
The best Judo player in the world would automatically be the best Sambo player in the world as well and vice versa.

Sambo is awesome I have long term plans of doing some travel to train but that’s once I get better at judo/bjj. Where I live that’s what we have lol the nearest Sambo school is about 5 hours away.
I hate that Judo is being neautered by dumb rules. It is one of the best arts out there but the rules are making it less than it could be.
Once you get to learn some Sambo you should open your own school or classes somewhere. Gotta give more people access to grow it.

I so want to learn Sambo especially the Combat style, but I don't have the time and money for it. In Combat Sambo it sure looks more effective for street self defense but the only thing Sambists(Combat style) lacks is advanced striking techniques! So they should cross train/blend in Filipino Martial Arts(especially Pekiti Tirsia Kali), American Kenpo, or Wing Chun. I do believe every high schools & colleges should add Sport Sambo when it comes for wrestling too. But I feel if Sambo Instructors and Jeet Kune Do Instructors would collaborate together for Sambists have better striking while helping Jeet Kune Do practitioners get better at their grappling and ground fighting. Sorry just brainstorming and are you in Fort Worth, Texas I do believe Fort Worth is a good city to have more Sambo gyms since Sambo seems to be the best MMA kinda martial art for Street Self Defense again sorry.

Yes, Olympic Judo has become a mere shadow of its former self. The IJF should be dissolved entirely and control given back to Kodokan. Old rule set. No grip restrictions and the comeback of grabbing the legs. That would make it much more fun to watch too. And it would be a nice little revenge against the IJF for messing up the rule set for Karate at the Tokyo Olympics. At the 2014 world championships Karate had much more throws, but the IJF was afraid of the similarities between Karate and Judo, so they forced Karate to change their rules.

@@t.weber64kg It often comes as a surpise to many Judo people when they find out, how many things Karate and Judo have in common. Basically classic Karate is stand-up-grappling, spiced up with punches, ridgehands, handpalm strikes, elbows, knees and low-level kicks. It has a ton of joint locks (yes, joint locks while standing) and jointlock-induced throws. The goal is to bring the opponent to the ground, but without going to the ground yourself. Because in the old days the rule of thumb was: "who goes to the ground, dies". Which is the explanation, why Karate has little to no groundgame. Defenses against groundgame, yes. But when you get taken down, it is your utmost priority to break free and get back up on your feet in Karate. Oh, and: whenever there is a joint lock in sparring, it actually means that you are going to break that joint mercilessly in real application. There are no submissions.
Some day, when Jigoro Kano visited Okinawa, he attended a demonstration, given by Kenwa Mabuni (founder of Shito Ryu) and after that demonstration it is said that Sensei Kano has proclaimed to Sensei Mabuni "For your deep knowledge you should be given 4th Dan in Judo immediately."
However, Judo, due to also having similarities with some styles of wrestling was afraid of getting kicked out of the Olympics some time in the past when also wrestling was thought to be in danger of getting kicked out. So in order to distinguish Judo more from Wrestling, the leg grabs have been banned in Judo. And since Karate still had and outside the competition zone still has, many similarites, the IJF threatened to keep Karate from being presented at the Tokyo Olympics, if they didn't change their rules in order to differentiate the 2 martial arts more from one another. And that's how the ridiculous rule set, we saw with Karate at the Tokyo Olympics, came into being.

It’s hard to find sometimes. Definitely do the wrestling learn some leg locks and do a comp and maybe you can be the start of sambo in your area.
I think the IJF needs to find a way to encourage ne waza. Deguchi's gold medal match was pathetic, the drop seoi her opponent kept spamming should have been punished. Not by shido, but by being countered. If the rules encouraged ne waza after failed throws, false attacking would be a lot more risky.
I agree it is too easy to get away with the attacks due to low ne waza time. I wonder if a stalling for turtle would help things. Turtle is silly in a combat situation anyways.
@@t.weber64kg I think turtle is a valid defence but the opponent needs to attack it. We train turtle turnovers for a reason. But mostly both players just look for the mate. But if there was a shido for the player standing and not engaging that would encourage ne waza, in that circumstance anyway.

The closest thing you will find is Kudo or Combat Sambo. Kukoshin Karate doesn’t have gloves and has some takedowns but no head shots with hands I believe.

How does the rule against juodokas competing in other grappling arts affect you? How is it applied?
It hasn’t affected me I gave up on my Judo goals due to funding. It’s very expensive to compete and make it to tournaments in Judo. Sambo I have one qualifier for world and pans. For others that did both in the US they had to quit Sambo. A good example is Nina Cutro-Kelly

Judo isn't the same but the issue is some moves have changed and some throws in ijf got banned and can't grab legs and side controll you can grab a leg and grab their belt.i don't know but you are not allowed to grab below the belt line.I quit judo because it has gotten soft and the Olympics I don't like that judo has changed but the ground fighting is good but I switched to BJJ and I like sambo more than 🤮 modern Judo
Yeah Judo newaza is still good. Modern Judo ruleset is pretty sad.
@@t.weber64kg I left the club I was in due to the rules and I don't like the Olympics making the sport not as interesting.but the newaza side from bjj I sandbang in judo. I should be a yellow be a yellow belt but the club I'm at they still see me at white belt but I know abit for the level I'm at.I may go to a mcdojo place and earn my rank because I don't like missing out or a my coach holding me back when I know I can do better

Sambo would be dope in the Olympics it’s just to me it’s not as popular yet, maybe I’m wrong but it’s hard to find places to do sambo compared to judo. Once it continues to grow definitely bring it in. Judo just needs to get rid of the bs rules it has, bc I actually enjoy doing judo. Go back to leg grabbing for throws

The olympic rules are a sympton of a bigger problem that go beyond the olympics. They're not trying to make anything better. At this point they're just running amok over everything. Most sports don't need the IOC, as big a stage as it has been in the past, and could move on to bigger and better things without the IOC. I'm not trolling. The olympics, at least this thing right now, is past its expiration date. IJF going away would also be good for judo. Let the practitioners and fans take it over, maybe in combination with other combat sports, and put on a great show where the lions share of the revenues go to the athletes and places to train.

@@t.weber64kg they haven't staged that in a while but that was one of the things i was thinking about when i typed that comment. one FC is a fight promotion with different sports in it and there are many other martial arts federations running events with different combat sports in asia.
at this point olympics is probably not fixable. the budget in cali is so bad, no sure how they are going to float so much more debt to pay for the LA '28. i grew up loving the games but not what it has turned into.

Well Sambo has its own problems its a dead sport due to Russia overpoliticizing it, plus it has little to none presence in a western world and its very hard to find Sambo GYMs if you live in western countries. To fix Judo IJF should stop being so dense and revert the changes but sadly the dont want to fix something that "works" for them.

I was one of those Judoka. From talking to other countries Judo has more money and is more popular therefore it gets the number one athletes. Sambo is a side mission for a lot of high level Judoka. I would say if it had the same level of recognition and funding Sambo would beat Judo in an overall jacket wrestling competition.
Judo is becoming a less efficient combat sport over time due to increasingly restrictive rules.

That is a great synopsis. The Olympics aren’t about the idea of competition anymore. It really is about marketing and they didn’t even do that well this time around with the awful ceremony. Funny thing is it looks like those Russians and Muslims are making their way into Judo anyways with Kazakhstan winning gold. I honestly am half and half on sambo being in the Olympics.
