My grandfather was a Corporal in the Pontifical Swiss Guard back in the 60's where there were still the Noble Guard (Vatican Household Cavalry) which were volunteer men chosen from the nobility of Italy and the Palatine Guard a part-time police force that patrolled the Vatican but all of that came to an end in 1970, where only the Swiss Guard were kept for their loyalty and their sacrifice to the Holy See
Just a quick nitpicky note: Saying 6000 tercios is the same as saying 6000 legions. The soldiers in a Tercio weren't called tercios, it was the name of the whole unit.
The Black Prince Harlech Castle, anyone? Or Rochester Castle? The *ahem* "battle" of Wisby, maybe? Stamford Bridge? Hastings? Teutoburg forest? Cannae? Zama? Trebia? Lake Trasimene? Adrianople? Siege of Constantinopolis? (The one in 1453) Second Siege of Vienna? Marathon? Attack of the Dead Men/ Osowiec Fortress? Anything about Vlad Tepes? Agincourt? Crécy (if that even counts)? Siege of Orleans? Bannockburn? Falkirk? Poltava?
Unless the defenders are literally an equivalent of in earlier times or related to Nazis somehow, I will always have a massive amount of respect for people who give their lives in such vicious last stands. The Norwegian Berserker that fought off an entire army at Stamford Bridge in 1066, the Greeks at Thermopylae, the Swiss Guards here, the Romans and Genoese condottieri that fought to the very end in 1453, the Texans and Tejanos that fought to the death against Santa Anna. Even fictional last stands like Boromir in Lord of the Rings, Commander Thorn, Ima-gun Di, Chewbacca, and countless others giving their lives all throughout Star Wars, Sergeant Forge in Halo Wars and Noble Team in Halo: Reach. There's just something galvanizing about seeing, hearing, or learning of these kinds of last stands, it always makes me want to set my own affairs in order
The Swiss Guards had another last stand on August 10th 1792 when 800 of them pretty much died to the last man defended the royal Tuilieris place against 20.000 rebelling soldiers of the National Guard and an angry parisian mob. The Swiss later build a monument in Lucerne showing a dying lion in his lst moments commemorating that event.
Do a video on Carolus Rex and do it in a way of a timeline of all the sabaton songs in the carolus rex album, so talk about briefly each song in chronological order and the events that occured
@@USAenjoyer123nah, most people think is about crusade knights. I learn this on history tho, why i know about. I'm from Europe tho. USA history teaching isn't much wide.
One of those rare times when the future of the Catholic Church was under direct immediate threat. Death of this Pope = a bleak future. The Swiss Guard's last stand saved the Catholic Church itself. Christianity would look very different today if they hadn't succeeded. What a great story.
If your job is to protect someone than giving up your life for his is what you do. Send as many of the bad guys to the nether regions as possible first. Glad they are immortalized by Sabaton.
You were spot on about the motivations for the attack . One was purely plunder because Charles V was broke. The other was to attack the Catholic Church because this was a time of religious war. The Swiss Guards fought and died with honour and of course, massive civilian casualties.
I find it hard to believe 45000 civilians were murdered. Most of them would of fled. So I looked it up and there are estimates of between 6000 and 12000 killed. And most of them most probably men died fighting defending the city.
I have been to Rome and have walked on the stairs that lead to St. Peter’s and has seen the castle of Angels I didn’t know that Swiss guard gave their life on those same stairs to protect the pope. Thank you
The thing I never really understood about this last stand is why the pope waited so long before retreating to the angels fortress. The second news would reach me about the fall of the walls I would evacuate and not wait until the enemy is right at my doorstep knocking. Sure i know that the vatican was close to the walls of western rome but still. Did he have to finish his prayer before evacuating or what? :D
Well im reminded of when rome was invaded by the nazis in ww2 the pope at that time actually gave shelter to as many jews living in the city as he could. In the aftermath he actually walked the streets of destroyed neighborhoods and churches praying with the people that lost family and loved ones and mobilized the church and opened their coffers to begin repairs. I imagine he might have tried to save some people or atleast pray for their survival i mean if he ran too early it would make him look like a coward and bring harsher criticism and make the church look weak. Not saying i agree with that but the swiss laid down their lives and the leadership remembered and honored their sacrifice.
Question: How were the presumably catholic Spaniards okay with this? I could see the Protestant Germans doing this, but why the Spanish? Were they also Protestant?
I imagine these tercios took less plunder and less chaos upon Rome, yet they needed money and it seemed that Bourbon was leading them to Italy, the most opulent place in Europe. It would have been hard to resist the temptation to get the money you desire, to help your family and your country, even if it were to sack the Holy See itself. Perhaps they were forced by their commander, the Duke of Bourbon to attack Rome, as a soldier would do. Nevertheless, I believe the Spaniards (and this is my personal speculation), must've atoned a lot after the incident, the German Landsknecht would be proud and say that they forced the 'Antichrist' to Castel Sant'Angelo. However, I think the Spaniards were desperate and Charles wasn't giving them money. They did a soldiers work, but at a heavy price.
The spanish king was also the holy roman empire, this decision was more in the continuity of the Habsburg policy than the spanish one. They weren't only spanish tercios in this but also imperials forces= German
nice video [I too wondered to the song , and the resulting history behind it :D] but nicely displaced and presented piece of history [bows In homage] :P
Fun fact. The tercios were the elite infantry unit of the spanish empire during XVI and XVII centuries. They were the best soldiers in the world (They fougth around the world: Europe, Asia, north of Africa and even America once). They were so efficient that now they are compared to the roman legions and the macedonian phalanx.
Were they not generally beaten by the Maurician more musket heavy formations? A Tercio just like a cohort or phalanx is excellent in formation on open ground, but suffer outside of it. And the Black riders(?english translation) who were pistol wielding skirmishing cavalry were a counter to pike formations werent they?
@@INSANESUICIDE I don't understand what you mean by the Maurician. And no, the skirmishing cavalry had to approach, the tercios had guns with them, that was the point, to be an independent and flexible unit that could operate on its own.
@@INSANESUICIDE oh, you meant that. Yes, the dutch didn't improve the tercio, they changed the warfare with a type of formation that was more efficient once technology allowed it, but that was later, before that started to happen the tercios could never be beaten on equal terms.
@@INSANESUICIDE the original comment was from 4 years ago, when I was starting to learn about them, I'll have to correct myself and say only XVI century.
How is there not a series in the works about the events surrounding the mutinous troops of Charles V, Sack of Rome, & the Last Stand of the Swiss Guard? It has the potential for an amazing, and heartbreaking, period drama.

According to a few sources, there were 1500 casualties of traitors at the hands of the 189 Swiss guards. That means that each Swiss Guard killed at least 8 traitors before dying.
Ok guys it looks like Hilbert will make a video about the Winged Hussars, The Winged Hussars were a Polish Unit (everyone should know that) and on the fateful day, the 12th of September 1683 the Winged Hussars made a charge after the infantry charge of the combined Polish and Holy Roman Empire troops and the Winged Hussars were sent in the finish the Siege and free Vienna of Ottoman siege. When the Winged Hussars charged the Ottomans were still very disordered from the infantry charge so when the Winged Hussars charged they put the Ottomans at Vienna at full retreat and that's how they won the Siege of Vienna and Battle of Vienna and lets get a round of applause for the defenders of about 15000 that held out since the 14th of July against an Ottoman Force of about 150000 which were constantly blowing up parts of the wall in early September. Thank you so much for the video. I've tried to find out info about this incident since I heard the song. It's really hard to find good sources. Thanks!
You know, I always felt like you were pretty impartial and harsh towards the Spanish (understandable with a dutch background). But I think you did a good work in this one. Many people tend to forget about the German troops and how the sack was mainly the product of a rebellion of the troops. One thing I was wondering too, I remember reading that the army also had significant amount of Italians. Mainly southern Italians, who disliked the papal states. They went into a rage when Charles died too, since he was apparently one of the few officers able to speak Italian and mediate between them and Spanish and Germans. But I don't know how true that is.

I feel like “reeeeeeeee” isn’t exactly the best representation of a response to “hey I know I’m asking you to go get brutally stabbed to death but you aren’t getting paid anymore sorry bout it”
It is either condottieri or militia... the condottieri's troops were higly trained, well armed troops (basically, the opposite of a militia) maybe, and I guess that is what you meant, there were both condottieri and militia?
Aye, it's definitely high time for a pop filter! Though it should be noted that there isn't much wrong with your audio as it is when you keep proper distance from the mic.
Did you know that the Swiss guards today get sworn in on the anniversary of the sack of Rome, in order to commemorate those who gave their lives?
I did actually and was meant to mention that in the video but forgot!

3:40 was just more evil Spaniard black legends. My favorites are Spanish Conquistadors snatching babies from there mothers arms. throwing them in the air and and catching them with the pointy end of their sword, or feeding them to their war dogs in front of their mothers.
Also I find it hard to believe 45000 civilians were murdered. Most of them would of fled. So I looked it up and there are estimates of between 6000 and 12000 killed. And most of them most probably men who died fighting defending the city.
If rome had that many legions maby rome could of rules the world.
That's incorrect. Tercio could be used interchangeably with either the unit or the individual soldier. Saying 6000 tercios is accurate.

"It was 1527" the line that made me come here from sabaton
One of those rare times when the future of the Catholic Church was under direct immediate threat. Death of this Pope = a bleak future.
The Swiss Guard's last stand saved the Catholic Church itself. Christianity would look very different today if they hadn't succeeded. What a great story.
In fact Not, the King Wanst the Pope died, he was a prisioner in San Angelo, until he gave in to the demands of Holy Empire King.
Then the 189
In the service of heaven
They're protecting the holy line
It was 1527
Gave their lives on the steps to heaven
Thy will be done!
How brave of them to give their lives so boldly.
If your job is to protect someone than giving up your life for his is what you do. Send as many of the bad guys to the nether regions as possible first. Glad they are immortalized by Sabaton.
IN THE NAME OF GOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!
Skloop Mcdoop deus vult
We will take... Wait wrong video
Thank you
You can't believe how long I have waited for such an video.
Awesome.
This
Well im reminded of when rome was invaded by the nazis in ww2 the pope at that time actually gave shelter to as many jews living in the city as he could.
Noobster hindsight is always 2020
Question: How were the presumably catholic Spaniards okay with this? I could see the Protestant Germans doing this, but why the Spanish? Were they also Protestant?
No Spaniard a protestant. Remove that from ur mind boi 👉
Orest Paja I mean, they could be. I’m sure there’s at least one. And in the Protestant reformation, there were Protestant communities everywhere
Legion XIII Makes sense.

Thank you for this 🤙🏼
@@bypyros1933 The dutch improved on the Tercio and made it significantly more gun heavy

3:40 was just more evil Spaniard black legends. My favorites are Spanish Conquistadors snatching babies from there mothers arms. throwing them in the air and and catching them with the pointy end of their sword, or feeding them to their war dogs in front of their mothers.
