Some people have expressed anger that Coach Christie Sides has Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever already practicing during the WNBA/Olympic break while other teams are still resting. I'm not one of those people. Here's why.

When Jordan lost to the Pistons (in the last game of the Conference Finals), his strength Coach asked him "let me know when you want to start again"... Jordan said "I'll see you tomorrow"... Also when Jordan lost in his first "I'm back" year to Orlando, he made sure while filming Space Jam that he had a gym built and played pick ups after filming.
This is a Champions mentality. Indiana looks like they want to go for it all and that's exciting. And CC is looking pumped (in her recent concert photos).... so when the WNBA picks up again, she will have gone from Steve Rogers to Captain America... every WNBA player needs to be afraid of what CC and AB are coming back to after the break.

I don't think it's bad they are practicing so soon. The other teams play them hard. The practice being hard gets them ready for when the break is over. CC and Hull were at a concert last night. (They were invited on stage at the end; it's on a video already) So, they are still relaxing and having fun. Practicing hard for a few hours a day is a good thing.

One of the largest problems that the Fever had was almost no practice-time with Caitlin present before they started a very demanding schedule at the start of the season. It resulted in the integration of CC into the team having to happen through trial and error during games with no previous chemistry having been developed. By having a one-week vacation and then getting busy practicing, the team is being able to focus on building chemistry that will result in a better level of completing plays. The first thing they did when they returned from vacation was Sides having a private meeting with CC. It's a positive sign that she's making CC her floor-general on the court, and is asking what she needs from other players for them to be able to complete plays.
You can bet that one of the things that CC will ask for is intensive passing-drills so players like NS stop fumbling her passes. CC has had to tone down the power and velocity of her passes to everyone but AB, and other players are still fumbling her passes. One of the things I noticed is that CC is such a passing-powerhouse that she can chest-pass the ball accurately from one end of the court to the other without a lot of arc in the pass. That's a very powerful pass that has a lot of velocity, like she's firing the ball out of a cannon. CC shouldn't have to tone down her passes, because doing that makes them more capable of being intercepted. The other players need to step up in handling her passes like AB has been able to do.
Sides is making the correct decision by packing in practices during the break, and I'm hoping to see it yield a huge change in the play-flow that takes place on the court in games. If Sides can get the pass-chemistry of NS on par with the chemistry that AB and CC have developed, those three players would be a triangle of death that would make other teams have to struggle hard to keep them from dominating the paint. If Sides has a couple of players practicing to improve the accuracy of their distance-shooting, teams that try to counter CC, AB, and NS with a zone-defense will either have to give up 3-point shots to the distance-shooters or widen their zones to cover the distance-shooters and create space in the paint.
CC and LH being snubbed by the committee that kept them out of the Olympics created a situation where all of the Fever's roster is available for practices, while other teams have their best players tied up overseas and not available for practices. Those players are going to come home to start the rest of the season's games battered and tired, while the entire Fever team will be rested and having a lot more practices under their belts. If Sides makes the most of these practices with input from CC, the Fever could be primed to go on a rampage. They've already gone from the bottom of the rankings to beating the top-ranked team on a good night, so I'm going to be interested to see what they're capable of after the break and with TF back on the court too. She'd already healed enough to be part of a couple of practices before the break, so if she's been practicing and is cleared to play it will do a lot in giving the Fever more available talent-depth to be able to use when subbing so CC can take breathers during a game.

And, keep your eyes on their middle section (they can’t fake you out with their stomach). You don’t stop sliding until the person you’re defending stops dribbling! Then you get up on them, waving your hands! It is good to see them practicing defense. A few months ago, when I first started watching the WNBA, courtesy of Caitlin Clark, I was appalled at the lack of deffensive positioning. Low, fast, slide y’all. Go Fever! ❤️🏀

My favorite quote to them … “Hard work beats talent, when talent don’t work hard.” We may not have been the most talented team at every game, but we were going to be the ones that worked the hardest. I have zero problem with the Fever getting back at it. I just hope Coach Sides gives them correct instruction.

This is the one thing that Christie sides has done correctly. Ya need to practice. Vaca is over. Time to get back to practice. Im with ya. As a coach we practice early before most teams

I am going to share a fun little fact! I have an adopted dog from a shelter in Des Moines, IA. I was looking at the kittens for adoption and there were two little females and their names were Katie Lou Samuelson and Lexie Hull! I wondered if there had been a Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston!

Eyes on the waist is a martial arts technique too. The eyes are on the waist level, but focused at infinity (eyes relaxed) which improves motion detection on the periphery. The body always follows the middle.

Adrienne, I’m not sure if you will answer this. If you were offered the Fever Coaching role. Would you take it. I believe you would win the Championship. You know how to Coach talent. Fever have the talent, but no coach. Love your podcast. God Bless You. 🥰❤️

I think it’s smart. Practice is what makes you better.
I DO NOT LIKE SIDES. She’s NO Head Coach at this elite level. HOWEVER, Sides is known as an Assistant Coach in DEFENSE. That is where she’s comfortable. And she must be competent in that position because she’s had a job in that position up until Old Fashioned Linn Dunn strong armed her into Head Coach.
The team needs better defense. We are so in sync re: practice, practice, practice

Agree 100% with the "get back to work" reasoning, if maybe Sides (and players) consider this less than a full-on, normal practice schedule, and treat it more like an NFL "mini-camp" where players aren't trying to kill each other, but are more learning new plays and polishing techniques.
I think it's all about what happens in the practices, and, remember, Sides is constantly learning, too. Staying loose is a big part of staying healthy, and fitness deteriorates very quickly with complete rest. When I was a long-distance runner, a week was an uncomfortably long layoff, and actually made me feel worse, unless I was nursing an injury. A month layoff would've been catastrophic, with a HUGE loss of fitness.

Every practice video I've ever seen of the Fever seems to be half court stuff. Do they ever practice full court. I hope so. They need to work on the fast breaks that Caitlin is so good at.

Catlin NEEDS a break! She's been playing for a year straight! Professional or not that's a lot on the body!
What they need is a new coach; all the practicing IS NOT going to change if Sides continues to call dumb plays!

Her ability to 'see the future' so to speak that we see in her setting up her teammates is also seen in her help defense leading to steals. On-ball is the next step. If/When CC can flip things in her head from 'this is how I fake her out', to 'this is how I take her move away', she will become even more of a beast.

Adrienne Thank you for a great topic & commentary. I 100% agree. I have Fever inside info that I’ve never shared here before. Before I get to that info, just as a fan, and perspective, l too, am 100% On board for them practicing after they’ve had this break, and I am actually grateful they are practicing with more intensity. Because they definitely need it, I also coached many years, and even though it was Little League and pony league baseball, I know the importance of staying focused, and on the goals that are often discussed on Teams. In this case, the Fever in the midway point of the season have a shot at the playoffs. It is imperative now more than ever that they practice and work on all that they can work on that needs improving, As well as getting back into rhythm after this break theyve had because its so easy to go Lax, After a prolonged break. Also, Iam not and have not been a supporter of Coach Sides whatsoever, And although I think her getting them into practice is a good thing, I remain As I have been all year, in my opinion, that coach sides is not a good coach, and is not a good fit for the Fever and she needs replacing. Now, With all that being said, what I’m about to share, I’m sure there may be people who will read and criticize and say it isn’t so or other things, and that’s fine they’re entitled to whatever they feel. I’m not sharing the info with them, Im sharing it with you Adrienne, regardless of who else reads it, Because I like your show, I like you as a person and fellow Christian Adrienne, and the Quality things that you have to say on your show. I wanted to share in your past shows, and it just felt right to share now. I am friends with someone directly in and around the Indiana Fever Team. I have been friends with this person for some time now, and Iam being 100% sincere in everything I’m sharing. I cannot say Who the person is, nor their direct role in the Team. Because I made a direct promise to them, and I don’t want my friendship with that person to come to an end, Because they made that very clear, minor details only on social media or anywhere, Nor can I ever reveal their phone number, their identity, nor direct personal info. This person and I talk about once a week sometimes a couple of times a week if time allows, and though our conversing is usually brief, whether its Facetime, text or call, the bond that we’ve made, is one I never want to lose. Im Permitted to share minor details only Along with the conditions I shared above. I know that several of the Fever players enjoyed their break very much, and their well earned leisure, shopping, appearances, and all around relaxing both individually and together at times.
I also know that The players along with coaches were mutually in discussion together, regarding getting practices in early, for various reasons, regardless of what other teams or individuals on teams were doing, and the consensus was fairly unanimous to get Practices started as soon as possible, and in this case, I can honestly tell you that Coach sides did not Mandatorily initiate this, it was discussed.
I realize that this does not give much insight, or any specific details. But again, I’m sorry I’m limited to what I can speak or share.
But nonetheless what Is important, is that the Team will be fully ready, and Better prepared to to Resume Their upcoming Games. God Bless You and Your Family Adrienne. I look forward to more of your shows as always.
