Easily, one of the greatest games ever made, truly a love letter from SEGA, nothing of such scope was even conceived by them after this, which is sad, but also highlights even more how precious this trilogy (and the Premium Disc) is.
It's crazy the series died with 3 and what they did with the Shining name after it. Kinda typical Sega sadly...
They helped pioneer console RPGs in the west with Phantasy Star and the other SMS RPGs, then as soon as the genre gets huge, they abandon their flagship RPG series.
Likewise, after helping pioneer strategy RPGs, especially here in the west, with Shining Force, they abandoned the genre right after it exploded during the 32-bit era.
It's kinda shocking they had SF3 sc 1-3 just sitting in their catalog for 25 years now and have never done anything with it on newer platforms. I mean, how did they not bring these games to DS at least? Crazy!
@@InglebardGaming It's SEGA at their finest, really. Many series, like you mentioned and much more from the SMS throughout the Genesis and Saturn were just left behind entirely. I remember felling disappointed during the Dreamcast and PS2/Xbox era due to that.
Since my brother and I played the first scenario at the time, I believe I was 11 we noticed how dynamic these tactical RPGs are. Take the battle with both trains and the refugees you have to rescue. It's easy to realize that nothing is actually idled, if this battle was translated into an action game, no train or character would stop moving, it's just that, using the mechanics of a board RPG, or in this case, tactical RPG, you and the enemy (and other entities) choose what to do in their turn with caution, like a chess game, but more nuanced, thus, this is why the more speed each character has, the more priority to moving first they get. It's funny that many consider that everything is idle, and the train stops.
If you imagine all battles in real time, it makes the game feel more alive. I remember my other older brother not getting why we liked a game where the others are idle, just waiting to be attacked...
This is easily my favorite game in the whole series. Loved playing through each scenario and the bonus disc. Really highly recommended
Yup! Great series/subseries!
I recently finished this for the first time. Never played a shining force game before but I absolutely fell in love.
Definitely great! Did you play all three scenarios? (And the premium disc?)
@@InglebardGaming I can't get over, though, just how bad these English voices are, making even the original Resident Evil voice cast amazing in comparison.
@@roberto1519 I recommend Unicorn Overlord, its strategy RPG published by Sega.
@@orangeslash1667 I just watched the gameplay of this title and I can 100% assure you, it's not for me. But thanks for the suggestion.
@@roberto1519 oh
I think one of the coolest aspects of the games programming is just how fucking fast the battle sequences are. Other games like it at the time would sometimes have reaaally long cutaways and loading times, but here it is so fast and snappy. That is some killer programming
Yeah, Sonic and Camelot really honed the speed of the battle scenes over the series.
I also like in III here that whenever you do anything at the church and it plays a jingle, you can press a button and move on with the game instead of having to wait for the jingle to finish.
I love the graphics
They were definitely unique for the genre back then!
Specially the second and better even, the third scenario, which is the most colorful one of the three, they also improved the 3D models and effects.
The only thing that bothers me are those black bars during the battle scenes, I remember some magazines suggesting they added those (which got bigger in each subsequent scenario) to compensate for the better visuals, thus, making the console render less. But in actuality, the scene is rendered in full screen and there's a patch which removes those borders, making it so much better.
At the time, some developers and designers thought that cinematic scenes looked better, but I don't agree.
Shining Wisdom was a charming game back at its time, not sure how it compares now but it deserves more coverage.
@@Mamiya645 right now the series only looks at Shining Force games, not the larger Shining series as a whole. After I'm done with the Force SRPG subseries of Shining games, I may move on to the other Shining titles... I'll very likely at least do Holy Ark since it's so tied in to SF III.
You belive your video is long?
I played the three scenarios so many times... Wanted to find every hidden character, craft all the possible weapons and items, elevate all the magic from all the playable characters on the 3 scenarios.. Played the scenarios for a little over a year, 3000+ hours.
SHINING FORCE III is easily my #1 SATURN game and in my TOP-3 Games ever.
And yes I also played SHINING THE HOLY ARK months before SFIII
SONIC SOFTWARE PLANNING+CAMELOT SOFTWARE PLANNING in the 90s = PURE GOLD.
Well, the video IS long 😁 But sure, it's no 3,000 hours. I like the game a lot but not 3,000 hours worth 😁
I agree with everything you just said.
Still haven't viewed everything but just for this video, you won a subscriber. Looking forward to the other 2 scenarios.
For me, SF3 is a pure masterpiece
Welcome and hope you enjoy! I've already done all the prior games in the SF subseries of Shining games if you want to take a look after you finish this one!
I've been looking forward to this!
Hope you like it!
I have been binge watching your retrospective series after I randomly stumbled upon it. Love this series and easiest subscribe I ever done !
Thanks! I hope to have SF III scenario 2 up around Thanksgiving-ish!
I grew up on Shining Force's 1 and 2, and learned how to read because of them. For me and my friends, Shining Force 3 was little more than a myth. Despite having a Saturn for a small period as a younger kid, I was never able to pick this one up. So it was destined to remain out of touch, existing only as screenshots on the pre-youtube era of the internet.
It wasn't until I was like 17 or so that I was able to convince my folks to get me a new Saturn. I burned the game to a disc and rigged up the Saturn to play burned games in order to finally play it. It was one of those transcendent moments that I'll remember forever. Even if the game sucked, it wouldn't have mattered because I finally had it.
Luckily that didn't matter since it actually managed to live up to some of that mythic hype I had in my mind for it. Even then, it wouldn't be another 5-10 years or so until the translation for scenarios 2 and 3 finally dropped when I finally felt it live up to all of the potential and more that I always had for it in my imagination.
To me, Shining Force III (All 3 scenarios) is the gold standard when it comes to SRPG's. Between getting to see the conflict of the story from different angles via the scenario system, to some of the really brilliant mechanical ideas implemented for specific battles, it is still unequaled a quarter of a century later.
Thanks for sharing the story! Just like anything nostalgic, it's not just about the games, but the experience of playing it and the nostalgia involved with happier times. My video on scenario II should be out around the end of the month or early December! (probably early December).
SF3 is so kickass dude. Looking forward to your vids.
Up there with Secret of Evermore for my most nostalgic game.
I really thought that in the volcano level, not
killing the baby dragoon, also had a benefit in a later game
That one is a bit inconclusive. I couldn't remember from back in the day so looked it up. Some people, including FAQ writers say you get a reward for sparing the dragon, others say it has no effect on further chapters. My next time through, which won't be for a long time, I'll have to give it a shot.
You do in Scenario 2, if you spared it in Sc 1 you fight it. If you kill it you fight the Ark Dragon instead and a boulder falls down blocking the path of the treasure cave in the Sc 2 Aspia Volcano battle. You get that room if you spare it.
god this was the reason I followed your shining force content.
I remember watching some unknown youtuber called Complete british Cookie, or something.
he did a let's play of this game trying to show all the options and possibilities that are hidden in this game
Thanks! I think I only screwed up and missed one thing :p Deciding whether or not to replay and do it before I record scenario 2.
That was probably TotalBiscuit, his Shining Force 3 playthroigh was indeed meant to be a guide to get everything, and had a written guide on some site like gameFAQs to go with it.
Please do a shining the holy ark retrospective that talks about the whole story with full spoilers
I was about to suggest this, too!
Oh damn I just realised you made those deflemask tutorials a few years back, thanks dude.
Yup, that's me 😁 You're welcome!
Considering that almost 99.9% of Gamer audience never had a SEGA Saturn (Segata is not impressed) you are doing a good thing to explain the story of a game that most people might never be able to play unless they listened to Segata's call and played the SEGA Saturn themselves.
Thanks! It's a story worth telling! With just some minor tweaks it could be an incredible modern game. Unless a fan does it, it won't happen, though. I know of a few fans games and demos (like the one in UE5) where they've done some proof of concept stuff, but I don't see a full blown and complete fan game.
Hey, Inglebard, I finally watched the whole video!
Looking forward to the upcoming scenarios and possibly Shining in the Darkness/The Holy Ark in the future.
May I ask you to apply the black border removal patch for the next scenarios, these are available from Paul Met Meduza Team website and the next iteration of the translation patch, namely, V26 will integrate it as one of its qol improvements!
I might do Holy Ark since the story is related. Going to stick with v24 to avoid any potential issues with sc2 and 3, though.
yes, BIG thanks to the Shining Force 3 translation project...without you, id be stuck at scenario 1.. oh and your right, Shining the Holy Ark is fantastic..
Absolutely, they did an amazing job and have been so dedicated to perfecting their work!
Also, yes, Holy Ark is so good! Love it!
back in the day I dreamed to play all 3 games, so sad... today, for me, SF3 is too hard to play all the 3 games, I tried some times but drop after some time. Great Video by the way, as always :) .
Thanks! You could always give them another try. Play on emulators with save states to save some time!
Great upload
Thanks!
Don't kill the baby dragon if you want some extra items in scenario 2! Can't remember what you get, though. I think there was a good wand or rod.
I've seen conflicting reports about getting rewards for not killing the dragon. Even one of the faqs wasn't completely sure if this was a real thing. Do you know for sure?
@InglebardGaming See, now I'm questioning my own memory! I want to say you get the volcano wand (that would make sense) and another 2 items. I remember the last time I played, probably 6 or 7 years ago, I farmed xp in sc 1 volcano from the respawning enemies, then left the baby alive and getting sweet goodies in sc 2. Dammit! Now I need to play again to check!

Dragon rod!
Got this game day one along with Panzer Dragoon Playing the translated games on real hardware using a Saturn Kai cartridge to play burned games. It's just easier that way instead of dealing with Rertoarch and it's issues with switching multiple disc Saturn games. All the first nine games are part of the same story. First is Shining in the Darkness where you fight Darksol, then is Shining Force 1 where you fight Darksol's boss ,the first demon lord. Shining Force CD is next then Shining Force 2 you fight the second demon lord. Then comes Shining Wisdom and Shining the Holy Ark which sets up the third game where you fight the third and final demon lord. Those three games finished the story and frankly the Shining games really haven't been that great since. But modern Sega is a shadow of its former self . I wouldn't trust them to do a series like this justice now.
I have all 3 scenarios But I have them in Japanese and I got to play Them on my US Sega Saturn with a cartridge that lets me play Different region games
Scenario II and III have been translated. You can burn them to a disc (low speed) and use an action replay to install Pseudo Saturn. You burn Pseudo Saturn, pop it into your saturn and it flashes the cartridge. Boom.. all regions, backups etc. Only annoying part is you have to open the Saturn and do a swap trick to install it to the cartridge.
I'd pay alot of money to play all discs translated, on any platform... I've given up on emulation. I bricked a laptop with viruses trying to download mounting software following popular instructions found on RUclips and Reddit. I would pay $1k USD for a legit copy released on the Nintendo Switch or PC. I hope the right person finds this comment section.
I still can't believe after all this time, Sega never did an official release of the trilogy on anything else, especially when the popularity of the genre exploded later on.
Using Yabause, it works fine, you can just load the fan-translated games.
3!?
I beat 1 & 2
Didn’t know it went to 3!!!!
Yup, three scenarios. Then the premium disc for a little mini experience after all that.
My favorite trilogy
