This video is only a couple weeks old but I've already played it several times over just as background noise after my first proper watch. I can feel the love and care you have for this game; its shines through the whole thing while still shying away from being blind to the game's faults. I love this game, too. No other game has made me feel what three houses has made me feel, and that is due to such a myriad of reasons that I can't begin to explain it... but you did! You explained it! Not sure if that made sense. I'm just very happy. Thank you for the hard work you put into this video.
"There are around five I consider pretty bad" Leonie. Even in her S support where she's getting married, she yaps on and on about Jeralt. She'll probably talk about Jeralt in the bedroom as well. And the worst part is to Jeralt, she's probably just some curious girl he taught some swordplay to, while on a job.
Yep! Leonie is one of the five I was referring to, along with two other Golden Deer actually! I've softened to her as a character somewhat over the years, but yeah the Jeralt stuff was really annoying, and nothing else about her grabbed me at all.
@@rtf-gamingGolden deer characters in general are overrated, with a few shining exceptions. I feel that I'm alone in genuinely not liking Claude. Not only is he somewhat smug but he's written as the most cartoonish of the three house leaders.
I feel like the Ashen Wolves could’ve done with a mention during the characters section. Even with when you spoke on Dorothea and Bernadetta. Yuri does SO much for both of their characters. He and the rest of the Wolves do so much for the overall lore, have fantastic stories of their own, and really fill in some plot holes. Constance ended up being my favourite character in the game, and the relationships among herself, Emile (Jeritza), and Mercedes are so so wholesome and are written so well
What’s it like being a newer Fe3h fan not being at the height of the game’s popularity? Do you kinda just stumble upon old debates and stuff? Is there enough content being pumped out lately?
@@adhama4811 I’ve found that there is still a pretty active fanbase for the game on tumblr and Twitter etc. Not as much discourse and debating maybe, but loads of great fan art! Occasionally a RUclipsr will do a let’s play on the game and a bunch of new people will join in the hype for the game for a bit! It’s also the same with FE:Awakening!
As sommeone who WAS there for the prerelease for this game I can tell you that you really missed out. This game's prerelease was amazing! The memes, the theorycrafting, the big reveals... For a while, we only knew the Crest of Flames for being on Nemesis and Byleth, so people assumed that Byleth was a descendant of Nemesis. Since Edelgard has the Crest of Seiros and the Empire was instrumental for establishing the Church of Seiros many people theorized that Dimitri would be the one to fight against the Church and Edelgard would be protecting it. There were even people that called the Flame Emperors identity! And the E3 2019 trailer where, after keeping it hidden from us in the rest of the marketing, they showed of the timeskip for one trailer... that was incredible, yet we still didn't know exactly how they would handle it. If anything the people following the marketing got 2 amazing moments out of the timeskip considering how well they handled it. I had more fun with just the prerelease for this game then I had with ither full games themselves.
@@brenn0818 Three Houses prerelease was the most hyped I've ever been for a video game. Since it became my very favorite, it's probably fair to say that the hype paid off.
I'm not one to usually watch out of nowhere recommendations in my youtube feed from people I don't know, but Three Houses is one of my favorite games, and a 3 hour retrospective was just up my alley on this particular topic. You vocalise your thoughts on the game and summarizes it really well, and despite having differing opinions on certain matters (like Verdant Winds and Silver Snow) I think this was a really well made video. The quality of your work definitely deserves a bigger audience.
I just finished my 8th play though of this game, and I’m planning a 9th already. Glad I stumbled upon this video! I love hearing people’s thoughts on this game. It might be my favorite game of all time.
This was my first Fire Emblem game as well. The unfortunate part of that is, from what I’ve seen of others people’s playthroughs, videos, & comments from/about other entries in the series, Three Houses set the standard way too high for me to see myself enjoying trying the other games. 😅 (Yes, even Engage. Especially Engage…)
Yeah, after playing through the game 2.5 times, i wondered why it was that it was always Byleth's house, regardless of which one he chose, dealing with Kingdom issues instead of the Blue Lions. You can kinda make the argument for the Miklan chapter that only a relic can stand against anouther relic, even if the wielder is Crestless, but in that case why not send Catherine who has had her relic for years instead of Gilbert and the professor who has only had their relic for barely a month? I feel like White Clouds, alongside Crimson Flower, could have gained the most if the game had more development time.
The frustrating thing is they still could have struck a balance, where most missions (and the overall structure) of WC was the same, with two or three chapters that vary between the House… still retaining how Rhea is basically setting up Byleth for her own goals. Among my thoughts towards this…. First, add another battle; do so by having either Chapter 5 or 6 end a week early, and then give us the Flayn kidnapping over *the final week of a month* so we aren’t stretching this out and killing the tension of it; that way we can give each House a specific mission… Hell, make Dedue’s Paralogue compulsory; we can still have him potentially die in AM if the parameters for him to be rescued aren’t reached, while having it more tied into the narrative (and put a different Paralogue in). Secondly, I actually think that Chapters 10 & 11 are quite weak, as the former is a nothing battle that exists solely to setup the Demonic Beasts and kill of Jeralt, and the latter feels a bit underwhelming because of that; my thought is to have a different scenario for Chapter 10 (or rather 11 if we add an early one) where Jeralt is killed in different circumstances; I also feel that one scenario should have not had Byleth merge with Sothis going into Part II, which would give the Holy Tomb a different flavour- I would say that VW makes the most sense for this due to its themes. Third… extending all the war-phase routes, CF more than the rest, but still giving them all more content. And in the case of SS, overhaul the second half *somehow* so that Rhea has more of a role (and make her playable, FFS!)
Narratively speaking, the reason why you're always dealing with Faerghus issues regardless of your House is because its the most unstable of the three countries in Fodlan. The Tragedy of Duscur is still a very recent event and Sylvain remarks that Dimitri's uncle seems more concerned with his own interests than he is in stabilizing Faerghus. Meanwhile, Adrestia and Leicester have comparatively fewer problems to deal with and therefore makes less sense to put resources into. The Kingdom's strong ties to the Church probably also plays a part in it as well. That being said, yeah, it'd have been nice to actually deal with problems specific to the nation of your chosen House. Honestly, a few of the paralogues could probably have been repurposed to do just that. Lorenz and Alois/Shamir's paralogues probably could have worked well for alternative chapters for the Golden Deer, for example.
I'm a huge Fire emblem fan. I've literally played all but 2 games in the series, and it is my favorite game series of all time. 3 House's was actually the 3rd game in the series that I played and Holy crap did I love it. I remember replaying the main theme every day as I waited for the game to release. 3 House's imo has the best story of any FE game except maybe Radiant Dawn. I just love Edelgard as a lord. I love all the main lords for so many different reasons. My first house I chose was Golden Deer btw, and they are still my favorite. FEAR THE DEER!
Also I appreciate your criticisms of The Golden Deer, and I think Im gonna make a video defending Verdant Wind and the Golden Deer as a whole, because imo Golden Deer has as strong of a cast as the other two houses if not more so
No offence but the story of three houses is very bad. It's a mess , unfinished and badly written. Complex doesn't nean better if the execution is bad. Only the characters are good. The story is a mess, rhea is wasted in the time skip.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 I still think it's a pretty good story. Sure it's unfinished in some areas, but the premise and story beats are still solid, and most of the characters are charming and well written. Edelgard, Dimitri, and even Claude are amazing lords for this series. I think this just comes down to your preferences instead of genuine criticism
ironically i disagree about the permadeath point you made lol. in just about any other fe game I'm an advocate for permadeath, but, since three houses doesnt give you any new units post-timeskip, it's actually very detrimental to lose units in the mid-late game. it's difficult to train new units to fill a spot and, often times, it isnt plausible to. just about every fe "elitists" i know dont hesitate to reset/divine pulse when a good unit dies unless theyre specifically doing a challenge run
you're using the word antisocial wrong. it's doesn't mean recluse/introvert. antisocial is *active* behaviour that harms your social bonds. bernie and marianne wouldn't be antisocial because they only passively withdraw (due to trauma), and while sure there's a scene where Ingrid misunderstands mariannes unwillingness to accompany her as a person insult, that's on the part of ingrid. characters like felix would be way better described as antisocial, as felix continues to insult dimitri, potentially even because being so close to him in terms of personality.
Especially considering Felix’s Supports with Seteth, who essentially warns him that if he refuses to tolerate anyone who doesn’t think exactly as he does he’ll eventually hate everyone else… Following his elder brother Glenn’s death, his own procession of grief was different to his father Rodrigue - whose self-comforting being his son “died like a true knight” angered Felix to despising Faerghus’ toxic ideals of chivalry, exacerbated by stuff like Dimitri’s broken psyche as a result and Ingrid’s glorification of his elder brother’s “noble sacrifice” which he ultimately blames on a culture of *suicidal ideation* and… he’s not wholly wrong about the social issues of his country. But we can also see that taking it to the extreme of defecting against his friends and family just eats at his conscience and he becomes no better than what he hates; it’s only by opening up to people that he doesn’t succumb to it. Bernadetta and Marianne also need connections to not spiral into their issues, but their respective traumas differ to that, ultimately; at most Bernie gets “comically” extreme to considering stuff like *burning* Sylvain so he can’t expose her secret passion for writing, but she always pushes against that inclination in favour of kindness that’s inherent to her (heck, the spin-off “Warriors: Three Hopes” actually lets us meet her loathsome father, who it turns out superficially has her base characteristics but none of her compassionate and caring heart…) Doubt I need to reiterate a lot of what people have determined about Marianne, how she’s affected by her family history and her need for good people in her life.
FE3H is my favorite game as well and I have over 700 hours in it. I’m always really happy to hear about other people replaying it as much as I have. 😂 And now I’m going to watch a 3 hour long video about it too!
I think Azure Moon could've been perfect had you learned what happened to Edlegard but she never remembered Dimitri and after defeating her, you learn about the truth behind the tragedy of Duscar and get justice for both the tragedy of Duscar and Edlegard, by defeating Thales then. Dimitri learning the difference between revenge and justice, completing his story and preparing him to be a wise king. As it stands, I agree that Azure Moon is still the best route, unresolved plot threads and all, so maybe it would've seemed like too much favoritism since white clouds already seems to favor the blue lions. A simple fix to Crimson Flower could've been Edlegard also trying to resolve things peacefully, sending messengers to the kingdom trying to get them to hand over Rhea. Then I would've had Rhea herself or someone loyal to her, like Catherine, killing the messengers to ensure the kingdom continues to protect her, thus cementing Rhea as the antagonist but painting Edlegard in less of a warmongering light. Now, unable to discern if it's the kingdom or Rhea killing her messengers, but knowing further diplomacy is pointless, Edlegard attacks. Boom, everyone is justified. Rhea doesn't want to die and is willing to sacrifice the kingdom to survive, Dimitri wants revenge on Edlegard anyway, Edlegard tried for peace but ultimately had to choose war. Her route also should've ignored the alliance and headed straight for Rhea then tackled the Agarthans. Or you could've just added them on the end since Crimson Flower was so short anyway.
Problem with the Edelgard trying to negotiate. She had every intention of conquering the Kingdom. Because while she acknowledged Dimitri as a leader she did not acknowledge the other nations sovereignty. The act of conquest was one of the issues that got her to have allies in Caspar and Lindharts dads. The demands would be surrender, abdicate the throne, everyone serves me, and turn over Rhea, with zero room for budging on any front from Edelgard’s side.
Even though I played Three Houses multiple times, had no idea Lord Arundel was Thales until after I played Three Hopes. Don't know when that was revealed or implied, but was shocked at that reveal. Great video! Watched the whole thing. Three Houses is such a good game. -Best R
I discovered FE3H during the pandemic in 2020, never played an FE game prior, and fell in love insta. Spent 350hrs across all four routes. Spent a little bit on awakening but couldn't get into it. Will try it again
Fastest sub I’ve ever had. Dude I would so be into you making a support conversation tier list or something like that. Also hilarious asf to see you go so hard on Verdant Wind lmfao
I am someone who has never actually played the game before but I have heard a lot about it and when I came across this videos I was intrigued and so I watched it! Since I’ve never played before I did have to rewatch some parts to fully understand and I’m so glad did because I now know so much more about this fantastic game!!! I can’t wait for your next video!
55:06 speed doesn’t affect hit rate at all, it just affects avoidance rate and whether a unit doubles. Dexterity is used for hit rate AND crit rate. While luck (diff in every FE but specifically in 3H is this) affects magic hit rate and crit dodge rate
I think one thing that separates Three Houses from the rest of the Fire Emblem series (as far as i know, i haven't played gaiden, echos, 4, 5, or radiant dawn) is the worldbuilding, and how it connects plot and character writing to the worldbuilding to the extent that I almost enjoyed the support system for once. A really easy way to make otherwise simple characters more interesting is to introduce them with a few basic traits, and then later provide more information which recontextualizes those original traits. Basically give the character a "twist." Fire Emblem does this sometimes, usually to decent effect. A very basic example is Yunaka in Engage, who is initially introduced with a very bubbly and over the top personality, which the player will see in a new light after a few supports when they realize that Yunaka is actually an assassin putting on a bubbly persona to hide her past. Note, even if the player has guessed this twist before its fully revealed (its kinda obvious lmao) it can still create a satisfying and memorable character, since the player is now motivated to confirm their suspicions, and will be satisfied when they do. So its not a big deal if people figure out the "twist" before it happens. There are other examples of recontextualization in Engage and other games, but the way Three Houses integrates its characters into the worldbuilding allows this recontextualization to occur for the whole cast as the player learns more about the world. Many supports in Three Houses don't just provide lore that recontextualizes that specific character, but which provides worldbuilding that serves to provide context for the whole cast, usually through crests (almost like the game is about crests or something). For example Hanneman and Linhardt, who are crest scholars, have supports where they talk about both the mechanics of the crests, and the way crests impact Fodlans society. Lysithea, Marianne, and Edelgard as you mentioned in the video each have backgrounds that shed light on the impact of crests and Those Who Slither In The Dark on them as individuals, and Fodlan in general. Characters backstories are directly tied to the politics of Fodlan, and so learning more about the characters through supports also often reveals information about these politics and Fodlan as a society, which are that which motivates Edelgard and as a result the plot. This is also true for side plots like the tragedy of Duscur part of Azure Moon, where the tragedy is first introduced as an element of character backstory through supports, and is then of course part of the plot in the early part of Azure Moon. I think this is the best example in the game; Sylvain is introduced as a kinda dickish womanizer, who is heir to the house Gautier. I know my initial impression of Sylvain was that of a spoiled noble brat, and I wasn't intrigued by his character. However, in Chapter 5, Sylvain's brother Miklan steals their houses Relic and the player must fight and unfortunately kill to take it back from him. Completing the chapter, the player will learn that Miklan was actually Sylvain's older brother, and his actions were likely provoked by how he was passed over as heir because Sylvain has a Crest, and Miklan doesn't. This knowledge about Sylvain's backstory doesn't just recontextualize his character, but also provides worldbuilding by giving the player a better understanding of how important crests are in Fodlan's societal and political structures, and how inheritance is tied to crests. And that knowledge about crests isn't just worldbuilding for its own sake, it's info that recontextualizes the whole cast. Crests are such an important part of Fodlan, that your perception of even characters without crests is influenced by your understanding of how crests impact Fodlan. It's a brilliant and efficient moment of writing, as it allows the writers to intersect and expand upon all three main pillars of writing in the game; plot, worldbuilding, and character writing; all at the same time. This connection between these three pillars even helps the game seem much better than it really is. As you said in the video, the Golden Deer characters tend to be the least complex, I'd say because it was likely the last route created, so the Blue Lions and Black Eagles had more time to be written into the story and world. Yet even these characters who mostly lack direct ties to the plot (at least in comparison to the other houses) are made more interesting just by existing within the context of the world of Fodlan as created by the game. The Golden Deer aren't completely lacking connection to the world either. Characters like Claude, Hilda, and Lorenz, whose connections to their Alliance families give some insight into how the multi-state structure of the Alliance has positive and negative influences on its members, and some of the struggles the Alliance faces. Like Leone, Raphael, and Ignatz, whos merchant families and non-noble identities provide some minor insight into what Fodlan is like for more average or middle class equivalent members of society. Like Lysithea and Marianne who, as aforementioned, provide insight into how crests and Those Who Slither In The Dark (sorry still gotta type it out its funny) impact individuals. The main thing with the Golden Deer characters is that with maybe the exception of Lysithea and Marianne, much of their connection to the worldbuilding is a bit isolated, focusing on specifically the Alliance and it's issues, which are a bit disconnected from the impact of crests which defines the Kingdom and Empire, and which is of course the main issue the games plot revolves around. Again, probably because it was the last route and is more of its own thing than the other routes. IMO. Even so, the characters feel grounded because the game put the effort in to build a ground for them to stand on. Most Fire Emblem games have very barebones plot and worldbuilding, with the worldbuilding existing to serve the plot, and the plot existing to serve the gameplay. "We created a desert country that has a temple in the desert where there's this plot relevant item so we can have a desert themed map and maybe a vaguely Arabic or African inspired character" that sort of thing. I don't mind that especially in the older games, but seeing Engage follow that formula to a T when Three Houses made such big steps towards making all three of the games writing pillars serve each other AND the gameplay was pretty disappointing, even if Engage wasn't that much more poorly written than most FE games. I think it's fair to say IS bit off more than they could chew with Three Houses, and as a result the game has it's fair share of plot contrivances and holes in the lore. But while it has many lows, I really do think Three Houses is the height of efficient writing in Fire Emblem through it's heavy use of worldbuilding to connect plot and characters. It's a shame that the game has such a hard time with overall plot, and that Golden Deer were clearly given way less effort than the other routes (people often say Crimson Flower is the most rushed route but when you take into account how much of VW is just ripped from SS... Idk) because Three Houses has the flesh of an A+ written game, but the skeleton of a C- game, and it can't hold itself up. Alright essay over, rambling time. I also really liked the voice acting. Despite all that stuff i said about the supports being good in 3H i still kinda hate the support system, but the good voice acting in combination with the allure of potential lore made me sit through them on my first couple of playthroughs, which I honestly couldn't make myself do for Engage, ds emblem, Awakening and Fates (i can count on one hand the amount of support convos ive even accessed in gba fe... so). I agree that Azure Moon and Crimson Flower are the best written routes, though honestly I still would rather replay Verdant Wind because Nemesis was a much cooler boss fight and it's longer. It seems that the first route they created was Silver Snow, and then Crimson Flower, and yet I do think Azure Moon is proooobably better. I still haven't played SS because it just seems lame and I've apparently pretty much played it in VW, but I think that after SS and CF, the order of AM, and then VW makes the most sense as the likely production order. CF was apparently written as a secret route by the writer, and according to them its 3 times easier to access in the game than they had originally imagined, so its shallowness makes sense, since in it's originally intended context, it'd be more of an easter egg version of SS, with AM as a contrasting route to both SS and AM. The writers have outright stated they designed the game around the idea of your student becoming the antagonist (referring to Edelgard) as well. I think my assumptions are logical, and that VW was the last created route, since its the most narratively separate, and is composed mostly of SS maps which we know for sure was the first route created. I'm ultimately glad they did 4 routes because I quite like the Golden Deer characters, in part because of their simplicity and being kinda the odd ones out, but I am also sad we didnt get to see a 3h where instead of making VW they spent that time polishing and perhaps expanding the first 3 routes. I played CF 2nd after VW, and when they just wrote off TWSITD at the end I was so dumbfounded I wondered how anyone could be satisfied with CF, since I had played VW first and it was longer, and felt more complete. That was just my initial reaction, I'm more positive on it now, but man. It's still kinda bewildering. Anyway I really like Three Houses but I do wish it was better, and that they didn't put ambush spawns in Maddenning. Fuck that horseshit
I feel the support system has a lot of potential to tell more interesting mini stories, like what some of Three Houses' supports managed to do, but at the end of the day, there were just too many uninteresting ones. I WOULD suggest that for the next game that they heavily limit the amount of supports each character has and just make them more in-depth story telling wise, but at that point we're getting really close to the social links in Persona, so I digress.
exactly, three houses has without a doubt one of the worst worldbuildings in history. Sorry but having mountains of useless information about the world is not proper worldbuilding if you only travel to the same 3 locations over and over again. Oh cool, petra is going to brigid, can't wat to see it, oh wait it;s the same generic forest map, cool. Oh look petra is not going to brigid, oh wait she came back to the monastery and didn't even see it, cool repeat that everytime a character goes to a different location other than the monastery, a random forest or the empire.
@mihaimercenarul7467 i think that take is very different from mine, but ill admit it might be unreasonable to expect you to actually read that whole monster
@@leaffinite2001 I did read it, and I still think the worldbuilding is realy bad. Most of it is "oh, bandits attacking villages close to the church, evil cult lurks in the continent, big empire attacks, house lords rebel or switch sides". Yes we get a bunch of information about other houses, but 90% of that barely matters nor affect the story, and we don't even experience those, it's just some empty text.
@mihaimercenarul7467 see, you phrased your first comment as if youvwere agreeing with me. Im informing you, as you seem unaware, that that is not the case.
Going to continue watching this when I have more time. Already looking forward to hearing your opinions on the game. I still haven't finished every route (because white clouds is very repetitive throughout routes) but it is definitely one of my top 5 games for sure. Up there with the Xenoblade Chronicles games, Destiny 2, Subnautica and Terraria.
Gonna heavily disagree with the Verdant Wind analysis in that you've basically taken out the heart of the story, the Golden Deer learning to unite and Claude learning to let down his walls to let them in while also pursuing his own objectives, as well as the plot relevant portions of SS that are basically just "Claude's doing what he did in VW, but off-screen" this time. It's admittedly an extremely subjective thing, but I generally find a lot of people ignore that and focus on Byleth-heavy focus while ignoring large parts of the VW story when complaining it's a copy-paste, when AM is also a copy-paste, it just ends earlier and with more unanswered questions because literally everything gets subsumed into Dimitri's character arc, up to and including basic logic in terms of the war campaign's actual progress (like, Faerghus barely exists in 3H after White Clouds, it gets conquered and liberated almost entirely off-screen, compared to the Alliance being the main battleground for the early part of Part 2).
I truly think ppls criticisms of Claude's route are unwarranted. I think the story it tells is solid, has a message and is well written, it's just that it's involvement with what's supposed to be the main narrative of the game feels VERY shoehorned in and feels like they were writing the story and then said "oh yeah we gotta involve the others huh?" and did so. As such I think that if it was it's own game, it wouldn't have gotten so much hate.
One thought occurred to me on every route: "Are we the baddies?". But yeah, it is an awesome game and a lot of it comes from the NPCs. While I didn't care when I killed a bunch of them on my first playthrough, it got heart-wrenching already on the second. Another thing I like is how well they get us in the story without an info dump as most games do. The conversations feel natural instead of "as you know...". It is such a shame that Engage's characters (besides best girl Yunaka of course) are so much worse. As a random NPC you didn't talk about, take Hilda for instance. At first appearance she seems to be a bit of a bimbo who dislikes studying, like fashion and other girly things and trick men into doing her work. She however is a lot deeper then that and is an expert at logistics and while she deny it, she was my best fighter in the alliance path. She have her own goals in life. Then take uhh Princess... Céline? from Engage. She likes tea. In fact she only likes tea besides maybe Alear and Chloe and she only talks about tea as well. That is her entire personality and basically all her interactions with the other characters besides Chloe is all about friggin tea (with Chloe it is mainly about Chloe's weird food but she of course still says what would work well with tea, she is worse then the Spiffing Brit. She has only a single interest, no ambition and no hidden agenda or any specific talent and she is far from the worst NPC either. Heck, I forget what fan girl's name is but she only likes Alear and have a fanclub, that is her one thing. Most Engage NPCs are kinda like playing D&D with a DM who makes up every single character on the spot while every single 3 Houses NPC feels like a real person (at least every one you can recruit). Engage actually have better combat the 3 Houses and an improvement on graphics but that is all it got. The plot is stupid and make no sense and it have only one good NPC and another 5 or so that are acceptable So yeah, Engage was a huge disappointment. I heard they worked on it longer too and actually worked parallel with the development of 3 Houses in the beginning but they really should have moved the writers from 3 Houses to improve the NPCs to Engage after 3 Houses released. In a RPG, the NPCs are at least as important as the story. I remember a game with good NPCs but bad story(like the Suikoden games) far better then a game with a great story and bad NPCs.
That is something I've been thinking about, as I really wanted to cover ALL the characters in this video, so maybe I'll do a followup in the future. Probably wouldn't be for a few months as there are other videos I want to make before I do that one.
Very nice video but i found it hard to sympathize with randalf. Hes still an invader looking to kill soldiers for the empire. Dimitri is cruel but hes not really wrong
Yeah I see what you mean. I say in the video that Dimitri isn't wrong with what he's saying about Randalf, but that he is also trying to demonize Randalf in order to justify that horrible stuff that Dimitri had been doing since the war started. Anyway I'm glad you liked it!
Rhea îs The worst written. She is good in white clouds, but in azure moon she doesn't even exist anymore, in crescent flower she îs reduced to an angry karen who screams "give me back my mother, and in verdandt wind she is an exposition bot for nemesis.
30:4732:24 Sorry to clip the Claude session but it very much appiled that Claude does have emotion scars because just like how he get treated in Fodlan and his home country of being an outsider because of him being a mixed race child. That why in the beginning he keep people at a distance until Byleth who help him overcome his trust issues with other and why he become the leader of the Golden Deer truly after the midpoint.
lemmie expand a little tho. if you do verdant wind as your first route, silver snow feels a lot worse. additionally, im not the biggest fan of edelgard either so all of the feels SS tries to do didnt work on me. for VW, it for me was the story of claude realising that he has this Golden opportunity to change the fodlan opinons on outsiders by literally taking over fodlan and becoming that main infulence. it makes a LOT more sense that the final battle for VW is unique if you take into account that unlike AM and the others, the primary enemy isnt the church/edelgard but instead is the status quo of fodlan. (ie, empire and kingdom as rulers) AM is another route that i enjoy, but its more of the behind the scenes stuff but it falls short for me with it ending just at the killing of edelgard. this is again a bias from doing VW first and knowing whats actually out there. it feels weird that all the TWISTD stuff is just in the credits. CF is the far superior route to SS, but is very much equal to VW for me. I enjoyed the flipped perspective, the way you dont actually have to kill claude at all and the whole rebellion vibes. It also has the best themed battle - Tailtean Plains. the final battle of CF kinda... sucks in comparison after the emotional battle of the plains. If it helps understand my perspective too, my favourite characters are: House Leaders - Claude, by FAR. I never liked Edelgard and her arc at all. One of the types where i always just feel like all their problems could be solved if they sat down and had a conversation (ofc its deeper and more complex but in the game it really felt like that to me). Dimitri was only cool for me in part 2 when he gets this incredible arc. Claude for me was always super cool and i really enjoyed his characterisation as being inquisitive and driven. Black Eagles - Bernadetta and Ferdinand. Pretty much the same reasons you said. Blue Lions - Mercedes and Felix. Felix's characterisations are awesome like u said. I also though like his supports with characters like Bernie and Annette, showing that he is able to not stay just as a edgy boi but can soften. Mercedes is just floof and awesome and i am the mom friend too. Golden Deer - #FearTheDeer Marianne and Hilda. I love how Hilda's portrayed as this lazy popular girl but then acutally in her supports you see she is deeper and cares a lot for marianne and claude. marianne is extremely relatable for me and her arc is super powerful. Church - Seteth and Flayn. Seteth for many of the reasons you said and Flayn as well i just love her characterisation as being somewhat innocent. The two interact so fun with eachother and the fact that Flayn's supports are all amazing is a big help. I dislike Edelgard, Caspar, Hubert, Ingrid, Leonie and Raphael quite a lot, which colours my opinions on the routes.
@@samanthainnocent5331 This was a really well written out response. I definitely see where you're coming from with that. I think the worse route of Verdant Wind and Silver Snow will be whichever route someone plays second. For me, that didn't happen to be the case, since I also played VW before SS, but after my first two routes, I was excited to see what would happen if I didn't side with Edelgard, and I didn't really like that VW tried to force the same Edelgard-Byleth tension, as it didn't really fit with Claude's arc at all. That's not to say SS is perfect either, as I can understand why people didn't like that Rhea wasn't really present in the story until the last couple chapters. I think it just speaks to how well this game handles player perspective, when it comes to the order they do things.
i don't understand edelgards problem with the church is, or how the church is blamed for crests. aren't people just born with those minus the inhuman experiments? why does the empress want so bad to eliminate the church as if that would solve the underlying problem keeping her from ushering in the utopia? my last question would be how did soffis die in the first place? she's suposata be the progenitor god right?
While it's true Edelagrd's version of history of Seiros and Nemesis is half-true-half-false, and in actuality The Church has nothing to do with separation of Kingdom and Alliance from Empire--it's true that Rhea/Seiros has stifled human's progress in favor of stability as stated in Abyss Library from the DLC. She doesn't trust humans because she thinks we're dumbfucks who will only wage wars (which is fair she's kinda right humans suck, but we still deserve to thrive and determine our own fate). Iirc Rhea withheld some knowledge in agriculture that she never shared to anyone until she took refuge in Faerghus, and she only shared it to The Kingdom just because she's there as a refuge. And yknow Faerghus is the most fcked up country partly due to how hard it is to grow crops there, that knowledge could've saved thousand lives or maybe even Dimitri's dad himself if only she wasn't so stingy and let humans progress. The Church's teaching might say to nobles to rule justly, but she's blind to plight created by crests and corrupt nobility as long as it doesn't interfere The Church directly. I mean, if Rhea and The Church really cares for people of Fodlan, they would've mobilized Knights of Seiros to investigate TWSitD/Agarthans or at least helping mediating corrupt nobles instead of hunting heretics and her too busy trying to resurrect mommy Sothis. Really, Fodlan is just so fcked up that to actually reform the continent for better it's either through revolutionary war or very slow peaceful reform that could span for generations, with high chances of it whiffing in the middle. See Dimitri's father Lambert, trying to emulate peaceful reform in Faerghus only to get Tragedy of Duscur'ed. Rhea has been shown many times both in Three Houses and Three Hopes as very unyielding to changes, and so easy to snap. Oh, and also, Edelgard as stated in Three Hopes never wished to kill Rhea but simply dismantling The Church and capture her (funny enough it's Claude who is implied of willing to kill Rhea there). And in Three House SS/VW Edelgard only held Rhea captive, not outright executing her. I just wanna say Three Houses actually is kind of lacking a lot of contexts for Edelgard, on top of a lot of missing/mistranslated English localization from the original Japanese script. Three Hopes might be a 'what-if' timeline of Three House, but it fills a lot of contexts of why she takes things her way regardless you agree or not. In her own Scarlet Blaze route it shows how severing ties with Those Who Slither in the Dark allows thing to get comparatively less bloody than in Three houses. In Dimitri's Azure Gleam he comments how Edelgard's reform is actually popular among commoners in Empire but not viable in Kingdom because , then later showing how catastrophic Those Who Slither in The Dark's control and corruption led by Duke Aegir is that Edelgard is turned into a literal puppet emperor.
And as how Sothis died, TWSiTD/Agarthans paid the thief Nemesis to kill her while she was in deep sleep to heal her wounds, then drink her blood to got himself the Crest of Flames and harvested her spine to create Sword of the Creator.
@@fz_dracohart1255 first. i'd like to thank you for the context. it was well written and i appreciate learning new things. as for rhea i think your position or perhaps the position of her detractors is that she is wrong, or perhaps immoral for failing to do more to help the common man. maybe even for failing to share her knowledge and therefore responsible for the people who dies that that knowledge or assistance would otherwise have saved. this strikes me as a logical fallacy. if i fail to teach you about firearms, weapons, close combat, tactics, and medical application that would have a high probability of aiding you in preserving your life and the lives of those around you, it doesn't also in turn make me responsible when someone dies around you that my knowledge could have saved. just didn't like that line of reasoning, but perhaps you have a wonderful counter argument which i will look forward to. ps: ok how sothis died is fucking grim. side question, how was she hurt so that she needed to recover in a coma to begin with? how does one harm a/the god of reality itself? i presume if she created both matter and space as well as time she could just do the antithesis and just unmake any threat, or just give her mortal form a level of resilience to harm that would render her invulnerable for all intents and purposes. my understanding is that she is far more than her mortal form ie: that she fully lives imbodied in the protagonist's mind, retaining her sentience and power over reality. if she can warp reality to control the flow of time why not just make herself a new body to inhabit. or is she just too taken with being with this descendant and the experiencing reality from a truly mortal perspective?
@ProudVet-Russ I might be wrong but iirc Sothis was injured by the TWSitD/Agarthans' first attempt on war against her dragon-people Nabateans. When she slept to recover Nemesis and 10 Elites (11 if you count Maurice/Crest of The Beast too) were sent to assassinate her. I won't frame Rhea as utterly the wrong one. Rhea only wants peace and stability, and so despite that Nemesis and his elites were the assholes, she spread the teaching that Nemesis and his elites were heroes of the goddess that eventually has to be put down due corruption. Crests and Heroes' Relic aren't from the blood they drank from her kin or bones taken from her kin, but blessings from the goddess. All in hopes to create peace and stability among humans. Yet she's also (rightfully so) distrusting humans and their ingenuity to wage war and kill so she hindered progress to keep themselves stuck in warfare with sharp pointy sticks instead of bombs and flamethrowers. I'm not sure why Adrestian Emperors' version on history of Nemesis got twisted to Seiros/Rhea being the bad guy instead, seeing Edelgard's ancestor Wilhelm fought side by side with Rhea/Seiros against Nemesis. But I think there was a malicious revision by the emperor ruling during the time Kingdom separating from Empire was formalized by the Church. Even as a religious person myself, if I have to choose between Rhea and Edelgard I'd side with Edelgard. It's already fishy with Church not attempting to at least scold corrupted nobles to behave, but to withhold knowledge that's not even having anything related to warfare is insane. Stifling head autopsy for advanced medicine so that medical-based healing won't overtake faith magic-based healing and secret of Crests not being found out by people is really vile. Astronomy was my field of study so kinda fucked up Rhea covered it up by destroying telescopes to keep humans making scopes for combat and warfare use, as well as to keep scientific knowledge about the heavens from lessening the faith people have for the goddess. No, it's not that Edelgard did nothing wrong. Like in CF I really wanted to strangle her for framing Arianrhod bombing by TWSitD as Church's doing through the goddess whateverever and never got challenged for it but I chalked it up as CF being the route with littlest time to be developed on. I like her in Scarlet Blaze better when she becomes more open, trusting and supportive because she's no longer taken hostage by TWSitD's annoying demands. There's fallacy Edelgard haters or just common laymen say that she hates the goddess and those worshipping it but it's not. She hates the Central Church, and she lost her faith in the goddess during the years she was experimented on, but for others having faith in the goddess itself she sees that in neutral light (see her support with Manuela). Best to say she's agnostic rather than atheist, but hey it's internet. No nuances allowed and people there loves to simplify and exaggerating things things. In the end, between Rhea and Edelgard it's the case of who you see as lesser of two devils. For you and others it might be Rhea, for me and others it might be Edelgard.
@@fz_dracohart1255 i’ll apologize upfront here for the lengthy reply. why is it fishy the church doesn't censure the nobles or insane that they fail to share their knowledge? insane’s a pretty strong term. those nobles aren't their citizens right? if i understand the church correctly they aren't a kingdom in of themselves and simply act like the types of religions we have in our world. while they could choose to step outside their own members and condemn nonmembers, many religions really only focus on their own people and as a general rule we don't look at that as problematic, certainly not to the level of immorality. communal responsibility just isn't a thing. i can't blame some priest of the church for what some criminal randomly did unless that priest actively participated in the act, planning of the crime or even sheltered the criminal afterwards. and I sure can’t blame the church as a whole even if that priest was in fact guilty themselves unless the tenants of the faith tell them to do so. ie islam calls on it’s believer to convert the nonbelievers and if that fails to kill them, so I would be able to blame the religion itself for the murder as it’s a tenant of their ideology, but I couldn’t blame them for something their religion didn’t directly call for. Heck even if a devote follow of islam did kill someone I couldn’t necessarily blame the religion if the above mention order wasn’t the motivation for that crime. communal responsibility gets complicated fast and muddier the harder you try to look into it. we ain’t mind readers. and noone is under any moral obligation to share their knowledge ever! i am emphatically against FORCING people to share their intellectual property. i hope i'm misunderstanding your stance but that seems to be a belief that reduces everyone to your subordinate if you deem them to have knowledge you want to take; with the implication that you can use force to take that knowledge if they dare to refuse to give it willingly. Am I mistaken in understanding that, that was edelgard’s justification for destroying the church and killing any who would dare to resist? or maybe it’s just a justification for disparaging them as mentally unsound? it just screams envy and jealousy to me and has some frightening ramifications if you scale it up to a national or global scale where millions will die for noncompliance. as an example being a wise hermit doesn't make you inherently immoral (ie evil) just because you failed to spend your life preaching to every one you possibly could in the towns/cities about the wondrous things only you know of. keeping that knowledge [or opinion] to yourself isn't inflicting harm on others even if that knowledge could save someone imminently or in the hypothetical future. for hiding the crest info and medicine i'm not sure how that played out. can you go into more detail on how the church suppressed that? i'm struggling to see how the church could even suppress physical medicine on a global/continent scale, but since the crest came from the goddess ie sophis, rhea's direct blood mother, i could see how they might have access to suppress the knowledge after sophis's death. just not sure how that worked out. was it just that they made up an untrue story about it like with nemesis to manipulate the political landscape? as a veteran and someone who uses optics for many of my weapons and visual aids those things are to war what the printing press is the propagation of knowledge. the biggest issue in war is intel. with a telescope and a flag you can communicate over vast distances sending vital intel to the commander within minutes. most things can be used in a benign way like to look and study the heavens, or to collect intel and stalk someone from a mile and a half away waiting in ambush with a moderate force to then surround the town and burn it to the ground when the target is sure to be there. i'm not willing to assign a moral value to such a thing, but it does seem in line with her wanting to avoid things that would cause more human suffering through armed conflicts. This issue comes down to the debate between freedom and safety. They are on a sliding scale as as you tilt towards one you lose a proportionate amount of the other.
i appreciate your opinion of verdant wind, but god shattering star and the just badass final battle in it i feel make up the fact its a copy paste of silver snow
@@rtf-gaming it's a crpg, the c stands for classic, it's a adaptation of a tabletop game called pathfinder and it's one of the best i've ever played (not my favorite tho, that's UnderRail) it's about a crusade against demons with great writing, and the secret formula, mythic paths, lets you transform into a mythical being, which changes both gameplay and story drastically, some examples: angel, demon, lich, trickster, gold dragon, and some more stuff from the pathfinder lore.
Rating Golden Deer last and having Dimitri being your favourite character^^ i couldnt feel further away from these opinions^^ Dimitri is holy overrated and his "redemption" arc is just troopie as hell ^^ dont get me wrong, dimitri is still a good character, but all of this is so forced ^^ And dont get me on the blue Lions class: Ash = bland, Dedue = yes milord, ingrid = kinda rasict, annette = bland, mercedes = is good, sylvain = good, felix = edgy but okey but everybody has different likes, i am just glad you liked the game;)
A mediocre messy story with one of the worst fire emblem gameplay in the series. The characters is the only thing solid, and even there, 95% of the have 1 gimmick repeated over and over again, abd they are useless in the main story. Bernadetta is also awfully executed and mkre gimmicky and her development is just weak and cliche. The game also has some of the worst villains, the argathans are so bad, azure moon is popular cuz they killed them without even knowing . Abd they for sone reason are only finished onscreen in verdandt wind/silver snow , in a bad way as well. Nemesis is bad as well, he was shown in the first cutscene and then randomly appear in the final chapter with no ezplanation, being rabdom and yet anticlimactic.
@@jaxxy2583 nope. I love how you wrote bait without even trying to argue what I wrote. The stiry is not good, The characters are ok, but The execution of the story îs messy, unfinished and disappointing. And The gameplay is also mediocre. The difficulty curve îs awful. Hard mode îs too easy and maddening was not even play tested. Now, next time try to use an argument instead of the "bait" comeback.
"There are around five I consider pretty bad"
Leonie.
So true. You get to Jeralt's and Leonie's "relationship" in Three Hopes; it's a one-sided affair.
Constance ended up being my favourite character in the game, and the relationships among herself, Emile (Jeritza), and Mercedes are so so wholesome and are written so well
I have about 400 hours, its my comfort game and find myself replaying multiple times a month, great video
Pausing my 3rd playthrough of FE3H to watch this 3 hour video on FE3H…. I may be a little bit obsessed! 😅❤
Bad taste indeed
I finished my 15th playthrough the other day, taking a break for my 17th playthrough of FE7
What’s it like being a newer Fe3h fan not being at the height of the game’s popularity? Do you kinda just stumble upon old debates and stuff? Is there enough content being pumped out lately?
Can understand that lmao
@@adhama4811 I’ve found that there is still a pretty active fanbase for the game on tumblr and Twitter etc. Not as much discourse and debating maybe, but loads of great fan art!
You're definitely right on that one! I didn't even know about that Dimitri theory, that must have been a fun time.
God I miss those days
@@brenn0818 Three Houses prerelease was the most hyped I've ever been for a video game. Since it became my very favorite, it's probably fair to say that the hype paid off.
Or the shot of Dimitri stepping on the Flame Emperor mask, without the context of it.
In my opinion, the E3 2019 trailer form Fire Emblem Three Houses was as good as the Breath of the Wild trailer we had in 2017
I'm not one to usually watch out of nowhere recommendations in my youtube feed from people I don't know, but Three Houses is one of my favorite games, and a 3 hour retrospective was just up my alley on this particular topic. You vocalise your thoughts on the game and summarizes it really well, and despite having differing opinions on certain matters (like Verdant Winds and Silver Snow) I think this was a really well made video. The quality of your work definitely deserves a bigger audience.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it! Yeah, this video had been sitting in my head for a LONG time, so I'm glad I finally got to make it.
I just finished my 8th play though of this game, and I’m planning a 9th already. Glad I stumbled upon this video! I love hearing people’s thoughts on this game. It might be my favorite game of all time.
Wow you have bad taste then. The gameplay is mediocre and the story is a broken mess
This was my first Fire Emblem game as well.
The unfortunate part of that is, from what I’ve seen of others people’s playthroughs, videos, & comments from/about other entries in the series, Three Houses set the standard way too high for me to see myself enjoying trying the other games. 😅
(Yes, even Engage.
I wished the other houses would be more different. You change Dimitri, but Claude and Edelgart are the same.
@@MrVideo-tp1xn Just so, yes.

No offence but the story of three houses is very bad. It's a mess , unfinished and badly written. Complex doesn't nean better if the execution is bad. Only the characters are good. The story is a mess, rhea is wasted in the time skip.
If you think the stiry is great you have a problem. Or maybe you don't know how to criticize bad writing.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 I still think it's a pretty good story. Sure it's unfinished in some areas, but the premise and story beats are still solid, and most of the characters are charming and well written. Edelgard, Dimitri, and even Claude are amazing lords for this series. I think this just comes down to your preferences instead of genuine criticism
ironically i disagree about the permadeath point you made lol. in just about any other fe game I'm an advocate for permadeath, but, since three houses doesnt give you any new units post-timeskip, it's actually very detrimental to lose units in the mid-late game. it's difficult to train new units to fill a spot and, often times, it isnt plausible to.

you're using the word antisocial wrong. it's doesn't mean recluse/introvert. antisocial is *active* behaviour that harms your social bonds. bernie and marianne wouldn't be antisocial because they only passively withdraw (due to trauma), and while sure there's a scene where Ingrid misunderstands mariannes unwillingness to accompany her as a person insult, that's on the part of ingrid. characters like felix would be way better described as antisocial, as felix continues to insult dimitri, potentially even because being so close to him in terms of personality.
Ahh my mistake. Thank you for pointing that out!

Bernadetta and Marianne also need connections to not spiral into their issues, but their respective traumas differ to that, ultimately; at most Bernie gets “comically” extreme to considering stuff like *burning* Sylvain so he can’t expose her secret passion for writing, but she always pushes against that inclination in favour of kindness that’s inherent to her (heck, the spin-off “Warriors: Three Hopes” actually lets us meet her loathsome father, who it turns out superficially has her base characteristics but none of her compassionate and caring heart…) Doubt I need to reiterate a lot of what people have determined about Marianne, how she’s affected by her family history and her need for good people in her life.

hello? Dojima??
Such a good video glad to have it randomly recommended to me

Banger video listening to this at work 🎉
Going to continue watching this when I have more time. Already looking forward to hearing your opinions on the game. I still haven't finished every route (because white clouds is very repetitive throughout routes) but it is definitely one of my top 5 games for sure. Up there with the Xenoblade Chronicles games, Destiny 2, Subnautica and Terraria.
Recently discovered your channel, love your content, keep up the great work!
This story is much more understandable than Harry Potter, there's one less house you have to keep track of.

Great job earned a like & sub 😅
Great vegetables. Great video.
I left don’t remember any character of fe engage lol. While I know the Three houses characters by heart 😂
I had no idea there was a time skip either. My dummyhead brain was blown.
what are the differences between sword, lance and axe? for fernando, he has proficiency of all three. which one to choose?
Look I love azure moon the blue lions were my first house but holy hell that final map can go to hell
Engage: How cone they don't me man!?
The plot is stupid and make no sense and it have only one good NPC and another 5 or so that are acceptable
So yeah, Engage was a huge disappointment.
Can I get a b side of this video of characters YOU enjoyed?
That is something I've been thinking about, as I really wanted to cover ALL the characters in this video, so maybe I'll do a followup in the future. Probably wouldn't be for a few months as there are other videos I want to make before I do that one.
@rtf-gaming understandable, but I just like hearing you talk about stuff you like.

Ah yes, Fire Emblem. The game where you have 1-7 crit and you most likely crit and when you have 15+, it ***never*** crits at all.
Rhea îs The worst written. She is good in white clouds, but in azure moon she doesn't even exist anymore, in crescent flower she îs reduced to an angry karen who screams "give me back my mother, and in verdandt wind she is an exposition bot for nemesis.
i think thats the first time Ive heard someone complain about too many supports (unless they're going for 100%)

Sorry to clip the Claude session but it very much appiled that Claude does have emotion scars because just like how he get treated in Fodlan and his home country of being an outsider because of him being a mixed race child.
That why in the beginning he keep people at a distance until Byleth who help him overcome his trust issues with other and why he become the leader of the Golden Deer truly after the midpoint.
Fire emblem: Three Hours
38:45 important note is the game only auto-instructs there talented skills not the ones you have them set to unfortunately
so verdant wind was my favourite route so we disagree HEAVILY there. lmao
lemmie expand a little tho.
if you do verdant wind as your first route, silver snow feels a lot worse.
additionally, im not the biggest fan of edelgard either so all of the feels SS tries to do didnt work on me.
for VW, it for me was the story of claude realising that he has this Golden opportunity to change the fodlan opinons on outsiders by literally taking over fodlan and becoming that main infulence. it makes a LOT more sense that the final battle for VW is unique if you take into account that unlike AM and the others, the primary enemy isnt the church/edelgard but instead is the status quo of fodlan. (ie, empire and kingdom as rulers)
AM is another route that i enjoy, but its more of the behind the scenes stuff but it falls short for me with it ending just at the killing of edelgard. this is again a bias from doing VW first and knowing whats actually out there. it feels weird that all the TWISTD stuff is just in the credits.
If it helps understand my perspective too, my favourite characters are:
House Leaders - Claude, by FAR.

@@jaxxy2583 still waiting for your bait to have a little bit of context. I am still waiting.
