I'm really happy to see someone else who can enjoy Aidyn Chronicles. I was pleasantly surprised two years ago when I finished my first playtrough. That being said, if anyone wants to play the game, I recommend to use a high accuracy emulator that support N64 CPU overclock. Aidyn Chronicle is one of those game really, really beneficiate it without having any issues. The change to FPS is amazing.
And that is sadly what turns most people away from it, and rightfully so. All the damn bugs and crashes. Progression getting killed in an RPG is just awful
I love this game so much. Usually consider it my favorite-- or among favorites-- of all time. I've played through it an embarrassing number of times. Taking Keelin and Brenna together can be fun. The love triangle aspect gets heavily played up. This was such a well done video! Very entertaining and informative. Subbed and can't wait to see what else we get from you.
Man, takes me back. From finding the rope in the burned village to that damned mushroom I didn't even remember until you brought it back ptsd style (I remember getting past it with continually trying) and I enjoyed how the combat was in it's own way. Sometimes you'd get lost in the wilderness but it was part of the game. And all the beautiful cheese. I remember one of the funniest parts was if Alaron went before Rabisat can cast mirror and she doesn't resist, you can just wall of bones her. Instant win! Then there's draining enemy stats to 0 thus effectively killing them wall of bones style. The alchemy trick you mentioned early, the healer skill cheese. I even remember not realizing I needed magic weapons for the spirit wolves in front of the academy. And The music's pretty cool too. All around was a fun game I haven't played in Decades~
Okay fine i'll play aidyn chronicles again. I remember thinking abrecan was the coolest ever as well, that grizzled warrior with a soft spot for alaron. A fantastic retrospective, you have my sub, looking forward to future projects!
I LOVED this game! I spent so many hours grinding my characters and messing around with my party and collecting spells and tons of weapons! I spent so much time trying to beat the boss at the end to no avail. Then one day after about a week of failure i thought “what the heck, why not?” And cast wall of bones on the end boss and it worked! This game is definitely worth a look and im glad someone’s covering it. Good video! Subbed.
Dude, this is a really high quality video! I rented this back in the day, but I wasn’t very well versed with RPGs so it didn’t really click with me. I’m working on a full US N64 collection and just purchased this one a couple months ago. This video has convinced me to give it another try. Definitely earned a sub from me and I look forward to whatever you come out with next!
Thanks dude! It's fun if you can stomach the pitfalls. I just love medieval settings and D&D so much. Plus alot of nostalgia mixed in as well of course.
Oh yeah. It was honestly kind of a prophetic game for me, I had no idea my future game library would be with similar but improved systems. It really cemented my love for RPG's.
Honestly this is one of my favorite RPGS of all time. I got so sucked into the world when I first played it. I literally snuck from the Castle to Erromon because the Minotaurs scared the shit outta me as a kid. I use the name Txomin sometimes in Souls games and other RPGS. Love this game, hopn it gets a remaster one day.
genuinely thought for a few seconds that you were making a joke when you showed the n64 box art on screen. had never seen nor heard of this anywhere before. super interesting game, great video!
Lol thanks dude I swear it is real. And yeah I had only ever seen one advertisement for it in the back of Nintendo Power. Apparently they made a commercial at some point but I've never seen it
This is a game I grew up playing. I’m so happy to see someone make a comprehensive video on it. This game deserves so much more praise for what it was at the time.
I actually didn’t know where to get the sword when I first played and ended up wall of bonesing Lugash the Lich and got stuck on the final boss. Luckily I was able to go down to my schools library and look up where to go on their PC. God bless the people who created made the GameFAQ guides back then and the Ctrl+F function!!!
I needed gamefaqs for the sword too. I ran around the desert aimlessly for a very very long time. But now you have me curios if anyone out there has done a no sword of lodin run
I love this game!! I played it, drew art of it, and beat this game many times! That fanged sword you get by killing the goblin king I used all the way till I got the sword of lodin in the desert. I love this game!!
I played it. I found it unsettling at times. But I’m glad I was able to basically beat it during a time pre internet and there wasn’t a lot of resources to figure out where to go next. The random crashes were fun and it’s been stuck forever in my mind since
I did ok until the desert, then I needed Gamefaqs for the Burial Grounds. Actually I think I meeded a guide for the Tower too because I wanted to get all the loot
I enjoyed this game tremendously. Especially the writing, the story and the lore. I remember there was one or two monsters which always respawned and which I used to grind and level up my loremaster skill to be able to read all the books the game has to offer. I also still have the Prima's official strategy guide. If there is a game that needs a modern remake, it's this!
I really enjoyed this video. I love this game. I remember reading previews for it in magazines and being really excited. Bought the game on release and fell in love with it. I still play it regularly. Thanks for giving this game the respect it deserves. Too many people’s “reviews” of it consistent of them wandering around the opening forest and saying its okay. Without ever really giving it proper attention. It’s underrated.
It really is underrated. The only advertisment I remember for it was a single page at the back of a Nintendo Power that I had. After that I saw nothing of it until it popped up at my game store.
I'm glad to see so many people enjoyed the game as I did. Thought I was nuts for the longest time because most of my friends hated it lol. Which I understand, its very frustrating at times
@@Sevoran117 Back in the CoolRoms days I was looking for RPGs on the N64 and stumbled across Aidyn Chronicles, I think I loved it because it has a really unique vibe and actually tried to be more in depth than alot of the ones i had tried until that point even if execution is a little iffy. Great video!
Haha loved this game as a kid. Out of all the glitches there is a good one I remember. Dougal's betrayal was only coded to happen at the entrance to the dragon's lair. So he never betrays you if you don't take him there specifically. He will even help you kill Rabisat herself lol.
I have to say, I had never heard of this game before watching this video. I have an insatiable appetite for RPGs of pretty much any kind, and so immediately found a copy of this game to try out. I especially have great love for older RPGs (The Legend of Dragon was my first
This was my favorite game as a kid and was my first entry into dark fantasy, a genre that is still my favorite to this day. I introduced my best friend to the game when we were kids and thought we were the only ones that ever played it. My favorite character is Godrick. Something my friend always made fun of.
I'm glad to have found and heard someone else who likes this game. And even better finished it. I was never able to because I didn't own it I only rented it. And I never saw it for sale or I would have bought it. Really wished they'd of made the one for the gamecube.
Pretty cool to see a new deep dive on this game - even cooler to see how many people did actually play it in the comments. I talk about this game sometimes online and most people have never even heard of it - and I don't think I've personally met anyone else who played it other than my brother and I. I watched him play through the whole thing as a kid, and have played it on and off over the years myself when I feel like I need a bit of an Aidyn fix. Still have my original cart. The game has a ton of great ideas and was super ambitious, despite the rough edges there's a lot to love if you have the patience for it. Definitely a title that stuck with me over the years.
I wouldn't have had I not randomly stumbled across it years ago. And it just happened to release when Square was pumping out some pf the greatest rpg's ever made lol I guess it didn't really get a chance. Plus all the unfortunate bugs and crashes...I dig it though
THIS IS IT!!! The game I played as a kid that we rented from Blockbuster video that I couldn't remember the name of!! Thanks for helping me solve this mystery LOL! XD
This game was hyped to the moon by IGN64, it was one of the last n64 games to come out and one of the few RPG's. I rented it, played it for 20 minutes, thought it sucked and never gave it another chance. It was reviewed very poorly at the time of it's release. Looking forward to seeing a fresh take on it.
I was probably one of the very few who played this game when it was new. And it is so memorable to me because this is the only game I returned back to Blockbuster! I couldn't get passed the graphics. They were just so hideous! The draw distance/fog was so bad! The stretched graphics! Barf! After playing Quest 64, 12 year old me felt cheated. I didn't give it a fair shot. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the video.
thanks for watching! the graphics really are pretty rough. But I think the thing that irritates me the most these days is the camera. always throws me when you go back and can't control it
Oh look who showed up in my recommended 😂 amazing video brother. During my only play through i got lost in the castle for 2 and a half hours because i thought i was told to grab 3 members but i couldn’t find a third. Whenever i revisit this game id like to see where i went wrong 😅 Great retrospective and this definitely got me stoked to give Aidyn Chronicles another go
Thank you my dude! Your videos have been very inspirational. The ending of Hybrid Heaven was so absurd I thought you had dubbed over the real audio somehow lol. And I enjoyed Van Helsing: The Movie: The Game: The Stream yestersday! It's too bad the multistream was being weird
Lol so you just need to walk out of the castle once you get 2 members and your friend Breanna will cry that she wants to go with you and she’s your forced 3rd member!
I will always love this game, despite its flaws. I love needlessly ambitious games that push hardware to its limits. Plus at the time I was an RPG fan that only had a Sega Genesis and N64 so I was starved for meaty roleplaying experiences.
I was in the same boat. And I didn't have a PC so I didn't have Baldur's Gate or anything like that either. At the time this game and Morrowind were my favorites
I remember reading a review for this in a N64 mag back in the day (I think it scored a 6 or 7), but this is literally the first time I've ever heard the game mentioned since then. Thanks for the deep dive!
Loved the review. This is one that hit me much the same way. Despite its age I always end up going back to play through it every few years. I think my favorite part was the leveling system in that you just spend experience on whatever skill / stat you want to grow. It always felt so rewarding.
There's just so much control. Even over spell levels, which I completely forgot to mention. I was worried that I was too positive about it, but the more I think about it, I think I undersold the leveling system completely. It's so freaking good lol
Every day I dream of starting a channel where I can talk about these hidden gems- games that I enjoyed but can’t talk about with anyone else (because no one ever heard of it). Well… you’ve stolen my dream from me. Congrats. This game was in some ways so ahead of its time and so ambitious… but in other ways just… very, very clunky in its execution.
The Wizard of Earthsea series seems to be a huge source of inspiration for this game. The whole thing with true names, Naming being a magic school, hell even the whole being chased by your shadow thing are all from Earthsea
This one always captivated me by its cover art when I was a kid. Contemplated it a lot in a rental shop, but never went for it. It scared me, RPG? I can't read English! So I've never played it to this day. Not an English language native btw
This was my favorite game as a kid and was my first entry into dark fantasy, a genre that is still my favorite to this day. I introduced my best friend to the game when we were kids and thought we were the only ones that ever played it. My favorite character is Godric. Something my friend always made fun of. I still use the name Godrick in my character names rotation. I even have a charcater in Elden Ring named "Godric of Aidyn"
Hey man, 1300+ subs with just 2 vids is no small feat! Keep it up, I look forward to seeing this channel grow. You clearly have those intangibles necessary to be successful on yt.
All this, smashed into a restrictive N64 cart. So cool. I wish I'd have seen this game on a shelf somewhere when I was a kid, I'd have loved it just as much then as I find it interesting now.
It's still fun...minus the glitches and occasional crashes. Less frustrating as an adult I think. As a kid I didnt know what Dexterity was nor did I care lol
Alethi lighteyes, yes, could as well be. I like those references. Also indeed I never even heard of this game, looks like something I would surely play 15 years ago.
My best mate had this game while growing up. I watched him play a little of it and despite its flaws, we did get into the game (iirc we took turns with the battles lol). Nice to see more of the game besides him/me missing enemies constantly. I don’t think he ever got far so it’s nice to see other parts of it. Great video/review! Will keep following your channel!
Hey thanks! Man the combat really does start off rough with so much attacks missing, low Dexterity and Thief and all that. Spells basically never hit. Then all of a sudden your party becomes a deathball. Really weird power scaling
Nice! Yeah it came out at the end of the 64's life cycle, didn't sell too well and didn't get great reviews. I love it but I get why people don't like it or tend to avoid it. Lots of walking, lots of bugs lol
I recently picked this game up, as I heard it was bad - it really isn't. It's a solid DnD inspired rpg with a lot to explore and mess around with. The open world is really what gets me, it's fairly detailed (with the expansion pak as it adds some foliage!) and the landscapes you see when getting to higher elevation are MAGNIFICENT. Love me some low-poly open world scenes. Thank you for bringing attention to this game. Also if you put "!crawdaddy" in the rename character option, you turn into a crab which is just the cherry on top.
I didnt know about !crawdaddy! I did mess around with !darkside for awhile to get the lightsaber. I was gonna use it to cheese through the game and get a look at different characters...but it crashed and I couldn't recover the file lol. Rip
Loved this game growing up. I still go back and play it every once in a while, but it has to be on an emulator. Game feels super slow without being able to speed it up. The game is pretty jank, but has its charms. Love your in-depth video about it. A few things I wanted to comment: 1. Going through darkling bog to get to terminor is a super long way around. You can just go south from the road before it ends at the bog and it’s a much shorter route. 2. Was glad to see helm of tempests show up in your video. For such an obscure game, it’s surprising to me that people know it shows up way later. 3. Sholeh can be encountered in the dessert as long as you haven’t entered the city yet. If you’re looking at the gate, she’s off to the left, nearish to the big fish skeleton. You fight with her against a bunch of chaos. 4. Majors and Lieutenants can drop the best armor in the game, but you can only fight a handful throughout the game. So you have to save scum just to get your hands on 4 chaos armors. Worth it though. 5. If you recruit everyone else before leaving gwernia castle, Brenna can’t force herself into the party. If you leave with a slot open, she will join you and depending on your dialogue options she’ll give you some extra equipment. (A battle axe if I remember right.) Hope to see more videos from you in the future :D
Having finally finishing my collection all of the NA titles for the N46 recently, I learned that this game existed, but that its. I literally knew nothing else, thanks for the vid!
I played it with my best friend. We would just pass the controller back and forth trying to take down Kitarak, that first trip from Gwernia to the mountains is one of my favorite memories of my life
If I open a video and see a long hair guy with bad posture hunching forward and using his hair as drapes that he's constantly peeking through, I know I'm in for a banger of a video.
Just wanted to say I appreciate everyone who took the time to watch, as well as all the subs, likes, and comments. I hope you liked the video and enjoy your time here. Thank you.

That being said, if anyone wants to play the game, I recommend to use a high accuracy emulator that support N64 CPU overclock. Aidyn Chronicle is one of those game really, really beneficiate it without having any issues. The change to FPS is amazing.
Can you recommend any? N64 emulators seem to be the most difficult to produce and many are quite bad.
@@AlmostAeroGauge I would definitly use Retroarch with Parrallel core. There's an option for overclock and Aydin Chronicles work great with it,
This game can be just extremely tedious early on until you beat the goblins.
@@AlmostAeroGauge Project 64 Version 1.6. The later version is not free unlike the older, or at least have an annoying timer every time you start it.
@@mrnygren2 Appreciate it.
God this takes me back. Sadly never finished the game due to a bug that made a main quest item disappear, but otherwise I did have fond memories
Good video! Subbed.
@DSGuyJay I NEVER got wall of bones to work on the last boss!! I'd love to know what the odds of that working are. Thanks for subbing!
You said "Alethi Lighteyes" and I knew we'd have enough in common for me to also be interested in this game. Lol
Wow, I've never heard of this game! This would have been right up my alley back in the day.
@@newnamekian that's awesome. I'm with you on a remaster...it's cool to see how many other people liked it.
genuinely thought for a few seconds that you were making a joke when you showed the n64 box art on screen. had never seen nor heard of this anywhere before. super interesting game, great video!
Lol thanks dude I swear it is real. And yeah I had only ever seen one advertisement for it in the back of Nintendo Power. Apparently they made a commercial at some point but I've never seen it
Thanks for watching! It is an absolute fever dream of a game. Equal parts frustrating, fulfilling, wacky and broody
So glad to see someone bring this game up. Haven't seen anyone play it since I was a kid and my dad barreled through it.
This is a game I grew up playing. I’m so happy to see someone make a comprehensive video on it. This game deserves so much more praise for what it was at the time.
I was worried about gushing over it TOO much, but now I feel like I undersold it lol. I love this game so much.
@@Sevoran117 I think you were gushing over it appropriately. Such an underrated gem of a title for the N64.
Subbed and liked for no other reason than to boost yer numbers mate. Do more old games. Good luck.
Dude thanks! Number go up
I love this game!! I played it, drew art of it, and beat this game many times! That fanged sword you get by killing the goblin king I used all the way till I got the sword of lodin in the desert.
I love this game!!
I love Warfang. the +2 to Warrior is just OP. And Tap Stamina Magic. whew.
Great video man, looking forward for more content.
Thanks dude I'm working on another one
Ohh! I heard about this one but never played it. Looks like a real gem and certainly will try it.
Keep up the great work :D
Thanks dude!
I enjoyed this game tremendously. Especially the writing, the story and the lore. I remember there was one or two monsters which always respawned and which I used to grind and level up my loremaster skill to be able to read all the books the game has to offer. I also still have the Prima's official strategy guide. If there is a game that needs a modern remake, it's this!
someone made a video reading all the books with maxed out loremaster
Well, not often I see a game that I've NEVER seen anything about at all, let alone one that looks this interesting! Guess I'll give you a sub
Liked and subscribed. Great video. Love obscure RPGs this sounds like great fun to try out. Keep up the good work my man
Thanks dude!
Finally a new review of this game, this makes me super happy
I'm glad to see so many people enjoyed the game as I did. Thought I was nuts for the longest time because most of my friends hated it lol. Which I understand, its very frustrating at times
@@Sevoran117 Back in the CoolRoms days I was looking for RPGs on the N64 and stumbled across Aidyn Chronicles, I think I loved it because it has a really unique vibe and actually tried to be more in depth than alot of the ones i had tried until that point even if execution is a little iffy. Great video!
I was subbed to this channel before even 500 subs!
Invested early, love to see it
Core-memory.... my brother hyped this game up, he played it at a friends. I know nothing about it except the name instantly rang a 20+ year old bell
Great video! Found your Diddy Kong Racing video through this one too, also great! Keep it up
I loved that game. Spent hundreds of hours on it back in the day.
Love these small and successful channels on my feed, modern RUclips is great
yeah I was prepared to have like...10 people watch it. then one morning I woke up like......oh.
Happy this came up. Never played the game but loving the videos ❤
I remember seeing this title at Game Crazy. Always wondered what it was. Great video. Subbed.
Thanks!
I’m the youngest child of 3 and my older brother and sister got it from our local Game Crazy haha
It was in my time of need (a 9h bus ride) that this essay about a game I've never heard of had found me.
godspeed
Haha loved this game as a kid. Out of all the glitches there is a good one I remember. Dougal's betrayal was only coded to happen at the entrance to the dragon's lair. So he never betrays you if you don't take him there specifically. He will even help you kill Rabisat herself lol.
Well that would have been nice to know lol
I have to say, I had never heard of this game before watching this video. I have an insatiable appetite for RPGs of pretty much any kind, and so immediately found a copy of this game to try out. I especially have great love for older RPGs (The Legend of Dragon was my first
This was my favorite game as a kid and was my first entry into dark fantasy, a genre that is still my favorite to this day. I introduced my best friend to the game when we were kids and thought we were the only ones that ever played it. My favorite character is Godrick. Something my friend always made fun of.
I actually haven't played Legend of Dragoon! That's on the ever growing backlog
This was a treat. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I love this game and pray I find a game that scratches the same itch it does one day
I'm glad to have found and heard someone else who likes this game. And even better finished it. I was never able to because I didn't own it I only rented it. And I never saw it for sale or I would have bought it. Really wished they'd of made the one for the gamecube.
Yeah I wish they'd put it with the other 64 games on the Switch. Not sure if that would fix the crashes tbough
Indeed. I'm genuinly shocked at how many have commented about it...almost no one at game stores I talk to could remember it
What? How have I never heard of this game. Looks awesome, thanks for bringing it to my attention.
XD
@@Khorvalar happy to help
This game was hyped to the moon by IGN64, it was one of the last n64 games to come out and one of the few RPG's. I rented it, played it for 20 minutes, thought it sucked and never gave it another chance. It was reviewed very poorly at the time of it's release. Looking forward to seeing a fresh take on it.
nothings changed, it still sucks
Thanks for sharing man, loved the journey with you.
Thanks for checking it out!
But I think the thing that irritates me the most these days is the camera. always throws me when you go back and can't control it
I would love to watch you do a playthrough, or more than one, of this game. Great retrospective, Sevoran.
Thanks! I may stream a playthrough of it soon, it's been almost a year since my last one
Discovered this channel as the 56th subscriber! Good video, great content ❤
Thanks dude!
+1 for Brandon Sanderson humor.
Lol yeah I'm preparing for Wind amd Truth right now
This game and ogre battle 64 are some of my all-time favorites!!!
@@FatherTimeHS same dude same. Can't get enough
Oh look who showed up in my recommended 😂 amazing video brother.
During my only play through i got lost in the castle for 2 and a half hours because i thought i was told to grab 3 members but i couldn’t find a third. Whenever i revisit this game id like to see where i went wrong 😅
Great retrospective and this definitely got me stoked to give Aidyn Chronicles another go
Thank you my dude!
Thanks for the deep dive!
thanks for watching!
Great video, I’m going to play this now.
Have fun!
The Wizard of Earthsea series seems to be a huge source of inspiration for this game. The whole thing with true names, Naming being a magic school, hell even the whole being chased by your shadow thing are all from Earthsea
I've read the first one but not the rest, a few people have mentioned that. I'm gonna have to finish it
This one always captivated me by its cover art when I was a kid. Contemplated it a lot in a rental shop, but never went for it. It scared me, RPG? I can't read English! So I've never played it to this day. Not an English language native btw
That's what got me too haha
Love the video. I think it is time to dust off the old N64, maybe, haha
Great video ! ❤
Thank you!
After you take him once he's kind of hard to leave behind! He's so damn funny.
Hey man, 1300+ subs with just 2 vids is no small feat! Keep it up, I look forward to seeing this channel grow. You clearly have those intangibles necessary to be successful on yt.
Thanks dude, I'm working on an Ogre Battle video. it's really fun and engaging work. Good way to pass the time. Thanks for watching
Finally some regular-person-adopted-by-royalty-who’s-not-at-all-secretly-also-royalty representation!
This game had generational representation
what an accurate title for a video. great work.
I haven't thought of this game in over 20 years, this brought up forgotten memories for me. Recognized it only when I saw the battle UI.
It had been about that long for me as well.
I am Sub #69! Nice!
I love retrospectives! I had never even heard of Aidyn Chronicles 'till your video :)
Nice!
Yeah it came out at the end of the 64's life cycle, didn't sell too well and didn't get great reviews. I love it but I get why people don't like it or tend to avoid it. Lots of walking, lots of bugs lol
No matter how tempting it was, I simply could not leave Abrecan behind....he is Alarons true father, his teacher, his protector, his hero.
What’s tempting about leaving Abrecan behind? Dude is a beast !
@@BM-vj4xu The Meta lol
@@mordredoforkney6185 it is wayyyy tougher to get to Erromon without Abrecan !
I never heard of this game but you make a strong case for it.
It's quite fun if you enjoy DnD type stuff. But there are bugs aplenty, sadly, hence the bad rep it got back then.
This game was severely underrated, its kind of weird at first but its really fun once you get the hang of it
I recently picked this game up, as I heard it was bad - it really isn't.
A few things I wanted to comment:
(A battle axe if I remember right.)
Hope to see more videos from you in the future :D
Having finally finishing my collection all of the NA titles for the N46 recently, I learned that this game existed, but that its. I literally knew nothing else, thanks for the vid!
I still remember renting this from Rogers Video back in the day with my brother. We loved this game, despite its bugs and quirks we were hooked.
I played it with my best friend. We would just pass the controller back and forth trying to take down Kitarak, that first trip from Gwernia to the mountains is one of my favorite memories of my life
@@Sevoran117 Kitarak was the bane of our runs! We were vastly under leveled and our builds were horrid. We lost so many characters
FINALLY!I have found another person that has this game!
Right? I was shocked this many people played it lol
@@Sevoran117 tbh, if i didnt own the actuall cart, i would have thought this was a medication induced fever dream when i was younger
If I open a video and see a long hair guy with bad posture hunching forward and using his hair as drapes that he's constantly peeking through, I know I'm in for a banger of a video.
15m into the video - confirmed banger I knew it.
Great retrospective, watching this to the end
