This reminds me of the poor women in the US who were poisoned from the glow in the dark paint used in watch making during WWI, I think it was. Also, HERE HERE! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 re: the ripper museum. What a disgusting money grab on Mark’s part! If I ever get to London I will definitely visit the Women’s Museum. Thank you for this video.
As you were talking about the match girls, I thought about the radium girls - I just learned about them today by hearing part of an interview with the movie's director on public radio here in Atlanta, GA. I had never heard of them before. Over and over again, humankind seems to find ways to exploit the most vulnerable. I knew about the Jack the Ripper museum because I love true crime. I had hoped to visit it one day. I didn’t know about the history of it. Now I will never go. I will absolutely look into Going to the East end woman’s museum. I’ve recently found you and I’m excited to keep binging your videos. Thanks for your hard work ✨
Dear Dr Kat, just when I thought that I couldn't love you and your work any more than I do, you get up onto your soapbox and Wow, just Wow!!! You have articulated everything I feel about the East End of London and it's people, where I worked in the A&E of a local hospital and also had the pleasure of living in that vibrant and fascinating area for a number of years. I have moved on but absolutely will never return to visit Mark's sick misogynistic fantasy of a so called museum, which was created under completely false pretences, he should be ashamed. As if the lives and deaths of the psychopath's victims weren't pathetic / tragic enough, I agree that at the very least he could be aware of the number of today's women who are suffering and dying as we speak, in our "civilised society ". I know that this video was made a while ago now and I sincerely hope that you and your husband are very happy in your new home xx
I very much approve of your soapbox, very well said! I’m currently reading The Five by Hallie Rubenhold, the story of the five women who were murdered, who have been very much misrepresented by history. I highly recommend it to those who are interested in the social history of the late 19th century.
My family are from the East End, and we have traced family to the workhouses. I hope some of the women in my family were there and fighting too. They were there with the Dagenham Ford strikes - another powerful moment for women in East London history. Thanks for the great content, love your work!

Let's dress Loraine Bobbitt up with blood and a kitchen knife holding a penis while make screams are being heard. Let's do that and see how well that's received.
Would highly reccomend reading 'The Five' - a book giving really very detailed biographies of the 5 women killed in the canonical Jack the Ripper murders. Incredibly interesting, immersive, tragic, and also made me angry about how society labelled them and that impacted on how the murders were reported and investigated
Your discussion of the history of the Matchwomen of the East End brought to mind Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl"; a story I read as a child. I was saddened by that tale, but never believed there was any reality to its content, that people could be so cruel. It wasn't until I was older and learned about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in New York City (the building is located across the street from what later became my alma mater, New York University) that I realized that such cruelty existed, and still exists. Thank you for sharing their story and being a voice for those courageous women. I am in agreement on the matter of the 'bait and switch' that occurred on the promise museum. Wondering how many palms were greased to allow that to happen!! I too, understand the anger.
I didn't mind the "soap box". I will tell you that I am also fascinated by true crime (it even extends to my profession as a parole officer). I also agree that the cashing in on the murder of women (or of anyone) is truly appalling. I enjoy your channel and listening to your insight into history.

Thank you for such wonderful stories. I admire your passion Dr Kat. I donated to the East End Women's Museum to support the ladies and to continue to hear their stories. I would love to visit the museum but I live in Australia.
I found your channel recently during lockdown and it has been a joy. Interesting, informative, well researched and presented. I knew a little of the match girls because my grandmother told me, she worked in the Lancashire cotton mills from a frighteningly young age but you have put flesh on the bones of an important story. As for your rant, well said. I believe you very eloquently expressed the sentiments of many. I was unaware of the existence of this morbid ripper Disneyland but I would have been appalled. Thank you for your efforts, I'm thoroughly enjoying working my way through your back catalogue. Have you ever considered having a look into the historical smuggling around the Kent coast? There's some interesting events there, such as the burning of the fishing fleet by the customs men in an attempt to stop the illicit activities and there's a particular interesting character from Romney marsh called dr Syn who is locally famous and still celebrated today in that area. Something slightly different to consider. 😀
I’m so happy to have found your channel - your topics are perfect for me. I also welcome your soapbox segment. I’m from Massachusetts, and we have similar issues here with the Salem Witch Trials.
I so enjoyed this video, and personally I also enjoyed you "soap box rant" as you called it. I've been eagerly watching your videos for several weeks now, but as I was viewing from my television, I hadn't gone to subscribe or comment. I thought this video, the content, and the objection to the Jack the Ripper "museum" warranted I resolve that issue. I am now subscribed and will receive notifications, and this video has received my wholehearted thumbs up. Thank you for your fantastic videos, and the time and effort you put into them. They feed my history nerd's need for great content.
I've been going through your channel recently, and thank you for getting on that soapbox! That bait and switch was completely unconscionable, and I'm now going to go and find more on the Matchmakers!
Well said Dr Kat. Thoughtful, thought provoking, history of the common people, that deserves to be amplified and constantly unearthed for the many who may have forgotten their last and for future generations. Thank you.
You rock, Dr. Kat! Your description of the hateful museum was restrained, polite, and dignified. May we all fight injustice in such a reasoned way, without descending to mudslinging and name-calling (I'm looking at you, U.S. politics).
My goodness Dr Kat every video youve made has not disappointed! It's February 2023 and I found you about 6 months ago so I'm working my way through your work. At the beginning of this video you wished us a happy 2019....little did we know..... The content.... I'm going to, share it with the women in my life in International Women's Day.... I'm visiting London in May so will look to go to the East End Women's Museum. Thank you Dr Kat. Gwen in Wales
Spot on Dr. Kat! I took the Jack the Ripper tour and while it was fascinating, you are correct in spotlighting the victims. I'll be seeing the women's museum
Good on you for calling out fraud! I too vote with my presence and my money! I can relate to your outrage! Well done to promote the real, valuable work of those that respect and honor the courageous women of the East End!
Wanda Allmond Another excellent video. I loved learning about the "Matchgirls" and their history. I also enjoyed you while on your soapbox! Good for you!!!
Agree on the "museum." In the states, we have a tv channel called Lifetime. When it originally premiered years ago, it was touted as a station for (and about) women. I called it the "I hate women channel." The programming seemed to be rape, murder, abuse movies. I have no idea what they show on it now. Kara (former faculty University of South Alabama)
I love your passion and agree with you. Good for you for stating everything so eloquently. I just stumbled onto your channel about a week ago! I love your content and your lovely voice!
Brava, Dr. Kat! Thank you for sticking up for women and lambasting the Ripper Museum for festishizing women's suffering. I almost didn't watch this video because I have no real interest in the 1880s in London. I am glad I decided to click! Thanks again for speaking out against greed and exploitation.
Great talk and well done on the museum activity. Agree all the way. My great grandfather was a ;policeman on the beat in Mile End and Whitechapel when the Ripper was active, a fact that my grandchildren find amazing since they were fans of Ripper Street in spite of my telling them it was more dramatic than historically accurate. Good luck with the museum and l will check out the archives when , if ever l get back to London. l spent some of my university years researching in the East end and the library at Stepney - is it still there ? My aunt was also a union rep for Tate and Lyall in the post war years so all the history of that time is mine also.
Dr Kat, I subscribed in lockdown to your channel, and have worked my way through many of your excellent contributions. I didn't watch this until today - I'm afraid I was a bit meh, victorians, meh. As a seven eight year old I made Tudor costumes for my 6 sindy dolls, the tudors have remained my guilty passion, and if anyone mentions the corn laws, well, I would prefer to boil my head and stick pins in my eyes. But EAST END 1888 rolled on. I was transfixed. Your passion for injustice against women, and the strength, unity and sheer bravery of those women is a shining beacon for us all. It behoves us to always speak up when we witness injustice. And as for the Jack the Ripper museum? Maybe the same people can bring us a more up-to-date one. I propose a Jimmy Saville museum complete with hospital beds, Jim'll fix it badges and muffled children sobbing? Classy! Perhaps we could set up a go fund me page and split the divvies, you do the fact, I do the costumes, whatchasay? are you in? Keep up the good work, the world needs more people like you
Dr. Kat , you are such a beautiful person, I hear the passion, emotion, upset and anger in your voice, speaking out for those women who were tragically abused and slain xx ps my brother Gordon Punter wrote books on J the R , I haven't read them, we were estranged, that is my little protest
I was nearly shouting at the TV in enthusiastic support for your opinions about the Jack the Ripper “museum”. Absolutely love your channel, and this video!
Dr. Kat, I discovered your channel just a few weeks ago and I have watched soooo many of your videos. As an American with a classics degree, I seem to have let English/British history slip by largely unnoticed except where it intersects with US history. I am learning so much and putting so many loose threads of knowledge (like Henry VIII and his wives) into a larger context. Your videos are amazing, well-crafted, well-researched, academically astute, but also accessible. You really do present a fair view of history. That said, feel free to jump on that soapbox anytime you need to. Put those money-grubbing “museum” people in their place. They lied and they need to be held accountable. Thanks for all you do!
Very well said and done. I have a strong tie paternally to England. Both grandfather and grandmother born and immigrated in the early part of the last century. My father and grandfather were union men. I am also a fan of true crime and a feminist. I agree a museum for Jack the Ripper should not include gratuitous violence. Those women who were his victims were just trying to survive in a hostile environment. I applaud you getting on your "soapbox" as you call it. Women and marginalized populations need support from people who are able to reach the masses. I would love to visit the women's museum to hear and see exhibits about how much these women helped to forward the cause of women to become better represented in democratic societies. Our countries, Great Britain and the USA, have great traditions of fighting for suffrage and unionizing. This was an extremely enjoyable presentation. Telling the stories if the past is very important to us moving forward. Thank you so much for this channel.
Wonderfull video! Your channel is amazing. I am seeing you here from Brasil, in these sad times, and it's a marvellous surprise, because I am a historian too and I love your analisis and insights. Take care and be safe!
Hi Dr. Kat, I loved this discussion and found it very interesting. I'm an unabashed Conservative residing in Arizona, USA, and likely we would disagree on many issues; however, I am in complete agreement w/ you regarding this museum as described. Yes, stories of these poor women/victims should be the focus.
Dear Dr. Kat, Words fail me. I never could understand the mentality of those who seek to profit off the misery of others. I share your outrage. Thank you for your courage in shedding some light on this dark situation.
I cheered everything you said!!! Might be a couple years or so late, but I greatly admire your passion & the amazing care you showed for the ladies of your old East End home!!! Thank you so much for your videos, I found them last week & have been enjoying daily binge sessions to catch up!!! Sending hugs & thanks from Across the Pond!!!
Hello, I found this by accident and now must watch all your videos. I love your presentation and the "vibe" of positivity, acceptance and truthfulness. Thank you !
Hi Dr Kat, thank you for your history of the Match Women of Bow. This is a thrilling and powerful example of relatively early (from my local perspective) important investigative journalism leading to successful union building - despite the employer attempting to scuttle it. While I did not reach your part of the East End at Bow, as a visiting North American "colonial" (okay, Commonwealth citizen) I spent a year in 2017-2018 living on the Isle of Dogs. I was there as an older student to study London's early modern playhouse culture (roughly 1575-1642) in its literary and performance context, and also in its broader socio-historical context. And while there, I also enjoyed several visits to the City of London Museum branch at Canary Wharf (fascinating explanations of the docks over the centuries, and the role of slavery in the growth of the British Empire), as well as various other history and art museums - and many live performances. One highlight was seeing the art collection of Charles I gathered back together for an exhibition at the Royal Academy. But also enjoyed wandering around the Isle of Dogs (also walking through the tunnel to Greenwich), the Thames Walk up to Limehouse (and the Thames-side pub part-owned by Sir Ian McKellen), walking up to Whitechapel, and on into the City of London. At the level of modern popular culture intersecting with East End of London social history, I continue to enjoy the band Madness' album, "The Liberty of Norton Folgate", in which the music and lyrics of a short suite recall the history that bit of the East End. I had already been looking at some history of the 'liberties' because they had housed some of the early modern playhouses, being outside the control of London's civic government - as you know more about them than I do, no doubt. (I have only recently discovered your RUclips channel and have been binge-watching your videos and enjoying them. Thank you!)
Excellent video, Dr Kat--Especially the rant. Mark's decision is an outrage & abomination. You put him in his place so perfectly: calmly, articulately and pointedly. Thanks for defending these and all women.
I will stand in front of your soap box ANYTIME!!! I think you're a special, and incredible, intelligent, strong human being! I thoroughly enjoy you! You're amazing!
You said it Dr Kat...""fairer, kinder"". These are the key words. Thank you so much!!!!!!! Here, here, re the jack the ripper situation! This is almost celebrated, yet were are the real and true East London hero's eg the nurses from the 1950's, the women who tried to educate the poor and to lovingly support the community men, women and children for quite literally decades after decades. Yet this trashy sad story seems to be the focus. You Britts have so very many people who truly deserve to be honoured.
Wonderful episode - especially as I research about my great grandmother growing up and living in Hackney - Thankyou- and looking forward to more information from the east end women’s museum!
I just discovered this video. I'd been listening to the occasional video on your channel, most of which I found informative and entertaining. This is at another level, though. Amen, and bravo! Catherine :)
Just recently found you and have listened to about ten episodes so far and really appreciated this one the most. As a child my father would exclaim “the things that have been done in the name of religion” (1950’s) and I myself think the royals are royals because they had the best armies and sharpest axes. I like the biographies of the talented such as the painters or writers like the Brontes and Dickens who also reflect a truer picture of the actual conditions of their times. Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge, Wendy W, Haliburton Village, Ontario, Canada.
I've been watching your videos for quite some time and I must say this is my favorite. Your tangent, as I think you called it, was wonderful and helped tie in events from the past to now. I think it was wonderful.
I’ve been following you for the past few months and have only just got round to this video: it’s excellent-thank you for speaking out and never put a caveat on your opinions-they come from a place of knowledge, enlightenment and respect. Kudos to you Dr Kat
My goodness Dr Kat! So refreshing to see you let down your hair/guard to blast out a indignant yet measured rant about this. I know no one will see this comment of mine. I am late to the game, just discovered you one month ago. I would just like to send this out into the ether. I love your scholarly yet incredibly passionate (albeit restrained) monologues (modern name? Posts?) on historical topics. They are illuminating, thought provoking, and yes, also entertaining. The last of these is completely the consequence of your obvious enthusiasm and your lovely, engaging manner. Thank you for the immeasurable joy and education you have given me, I have been spurred to (albeit limited in the time of Corona) research topics and histories that were never on my horizon. One question. As an obvious Stratford on Avon WS proponent, do you really think that WS had access to a library voluminous enough? I am bilingual, and due to my allotted position as social outcast, have had copious time to read voraciously in English, German, and of course works of Marlowe, Chaucer, WS, Goethe, Kleist, ... before University. It is fundamental to understand the flavor, rhythms and actually the “song” of a language to be able to master it. Language is like music, and it’s rhythm, tonal pitches, and flavor are as important as command of its vocabulary. WS, whoever he was, had command and a playful love and inventiveness that is well, just wonderful to delight in. I just cannot easily believe that the actual Stratford WS had the means/access, and time to
Dr. Kat and her soapbox are the reason I subscribed. I visited east end for a Jack the Ripper tour in the summer of 2018 and felt very ill at ease being a tourist in a place where so much trauma was endured. Luckily, I was there with a history professor who was dedicated to the stories of the women who were murdered, and we had a very long discussion as a class about the fetishization of the murders. If you haven’t already read Hallie Rubenhold’s “The Five” I cannot recommend it enough. It really changed the whole story for me!
As I become more and more immersed in your site and more respectful of your knowledge this edition has also made me considerate of your ethics and values
An even higher level of respect for Dr. Kat after this video.. The bar is already pretty high. You have my support please continue to make remarkable content. Thanks so much!
I've only recently discovered your channel and am loving what I'm hearing but this one, wow! My late mum was born in Bow and I in Barking, with generations of East Enders in my past, so this was particularly fascinating. Your rant was sadly appropriate for this current time, with yet another female murder victim in the news and the outpouring of anger and grief felt by so many women. Thank you for speaking so eloquently and powerfully from the heart.
Love the video! I agree wholeheartedly with your view on the Ripper fiasco, what a shame it played out that way. I also enjoy learning about what life was really like for people in the past. I had never heard of the Matchwomen before, thanks for enlightening us.
Thank you for the information, I will not be going there, and thank you for sharing your passion, I do so admire people who stand up for what they consider right, people should not be allowed to make money by exploiting the victims of crime.
Part of how I've been entertaining myself during quarantine (apart from binge watching your lovely videos) is obsessively researching and planning my trip to London that's scheduled for October (I'm hopeful that I won't have to cancel). I had thought about the Jack the Ripper museum but I think I'd be much happier replacing it with the East End women's museum. I love your videos and I hope your channel continues to grow!
@Readying the Past I've only recently found your channel (about 4 days ago lol) and have been binge watching starting at the earliest. I am a bit of a history nerd and love the quick but deeper dives into the characters of history. I had not heard of the the Matchstick women before, that is until I began watching a show called Ripper Street. Set in period Britain, it not only covered the Ripper murders (I firmly believe the killer was an American...but I digress) but other note worthy historical events of the time. That included a few episodes on the Matchstick women. I'm so glad you brought more light onto the subject! I too love true crime and cold cases and mysteries. I'm looking forward to the day I can get back 'across the pond' and include a visit the Eastend Womens Museum to the long list of places to see that was on my list before the world shut down. Thanks for providing all of your subject matter so well!
12/10 Dr Kat Soap Box. I will always be here for well-founded arguments against inequality.👏

There's some interesting events there, such as the burning of the fishing fleet by the customs men in an attempt to stop the illicit activities and there's a particular interesting character from Romney marsh called dr Syn who is locally famous and still celebrated today in that area. Something slightly different to consider. 😀
Thank you, Dr Kat. I never knew this. I really appreciate your frankness - it is a breath of fresh air! Warm regards from Down Under 🇦🇺
I’m so happy to have found your channel - your topics are perfect for me.
I also welcome your soapbox segment. I’m from Massachusetts, and we have similar issues here with the Salem Witch Trials.
Right on sister just found your channel and I am using it to redress the inequality of my education xxx
Thank you.
This was beautifully done. Thank you.
Edit: I also agree with your soap box rant. That proprietor should be *ashamed* of himself.
Good for you for speaking out about the museum.
You rock, Dr. Kat! Your description of the hateful museum was restrained, polite, and dignified. May we all fight injustice in such a reasoned way, without descending to mudslinging and name-calling (I'm looking at you, U.S. politics).
Great video including the rant. The whole Matchstick Women's story puts me in of what happened to the Radium Dial painters.
I just found your channel a few months ago and have been catching up on past videos. I have only one thing to say about this one. YOU GO, GIRL!!!
Spot on Dr.
I LOVE IT WHEN YOU TELL HERSTORY!
Fascinating content as always, Dr. Kat. I was cheering while listening to your remarks on the Jack the Ripper museum. Well said!
Wanda Allmond
Another excellent video.
So called because it's a lifetime sentence.
My ex husband used to call Lifetime “It’s the man’s fault channel “. 🙄
Some of the same still.
I love your passion and agree with you. Good for you for stating everything so eloquently. I just stumbled onto your channel about a week ago! I love your content and your lovely voice!
Thank you Dr. Kat. You got it right on with your "soapbox" speech!!@
Brava, Dr.
You always enlighten me, and I love you for it. This video is icing on the Dr. Kat cake. Thank you.
Bravo! Well said. More encouragement to read “The 5” which I just purchased. Thank you for your soapbox.
Well said Dr Kat! A woman after my own heart.
I’m so glad you spoke up. It’s so important and if I ever come to London again I will seek out the East London Women’s Museum 👍
Wonderful and enlightening video .Its way past time that the history of women should be heard . Greedy Mark 🤑Thankyou Dr Kat xx
Dear Dr. Kat,
Words fail me. I never could understand the mentality of those who seek to profit off the misery of others. I share your outrage. Thank you for your courage in shedding some light on this dark situation.
Thank you for this great presentation - outburst INCLUDED! - and for the memories it evoked of a long-past time when I lived in Bow.
Excellent video and well reasoned points at the end. Loved the history of the “match girls”/WOMEN who helped to organize labor in London. ❤️
I had no idea. Wow! So glad they stood up for themselves.
Dr Kat I admire your spunk and fire. This is 22 May 2020, you are very informative, keep up your channel.
Well said. I will NOT be visiting the Jack the Ripper Museum in my upcoming trip to London. Thank you so much for the video!
I will stand in front of your soap box ANYTIME!!! I think you're a special, and incredible, intelligent, strong human being! I thoroughly enjoy you! You're amazing!
I think you're marvelous. Thank you for entertaining, informing and educating us.
I totally appreciate and stand behind your soap box. I couldn't agree with you more.
An even higher level of respect for Dr. Kat after this video.. The bar is already pretty high. You have my support please continue to make remarkable content. Thanks so much!
I enjoyed the whole video, outburst included! It needed and deserved to be said. Well done and thank you.
Thank you for a great video. Love you on your soapbox Dr Kat!
Love this fiery side of Dr. Kat!!!
Fantastic episode, Dr Kat. Late to the party, but looking forward to a real museum of women's history.
Wow! Excellent job!!!! Rant & all...loved it!!!!!
I screamed when you said you were a Murderino! SSDGM Dr. Kat! ❤️
Another Murderino over here! ❤️
Outstanding ! Outburst included! Thank you from a true admirer.
Love the video! I agree wholeheartedly with your view on the Ripper fiasco, what a shame it played out that way. I also enjoy learning about what life was really like for people in the past. I had never heard of the Matchwomen before, thanks for enlightening us.
Wonderful information. I also enjoyed your rant. I love that you try to give an unbiased history. This makes your rant all the more interesting
Thank you for the information, I will not be going there, and thank you for sharing your passion, I do so admire people who stand up
for what they consider right, people should not be allowed to make money by exploiting the victims of crime.
You are delightful Kat . Thank You
Well said! I do enjoy your clips on history. Thank you.
As we say in the State, You go girl, preach it ! Great job
Recently found your channel and its helping me get through lockdown. Being American I had never heard of the match girls. Great story!
I wonder if a particular family or person is designated to re-paint Gladstone's hands red when necessary in each generation?
BRAVO!!! Very well done. I’m on a soapbox along with you. Empowerment of women, their stories, their voices.
I wish I could like this video more than once.
@Readying the Past
I've only recently found your channel (about 4 days ago lol) and have been binge watching starting at the earliest.
Agreed!!! I’m not even in the UK but fascinated by your channel and now I love your channel even more!!!
Well done on your dignified outburst and wealth of shaping a positive impact.
