ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

Cammie I would not think you are an Amateur shearer you are way to hard on yourself. You are a fantastic shearer. Oh my gosh watching John well yes looks so much like James. I’m an American from Portland / California (in that order) who’s only experience with your dialect being from comedians and the media and I understood you well enough for context to fill in all the gaps. safe to say you’re good insofar as native English speakers goes. I’m only a “farmer” for about three weeks a year and the rest of the time all I’m worried about is making rent & doing my job helping take care of people’s eye health,, I’m hardly your demographic for several reasons but seriously, don’t worry about the language you use. your content is immaculate and you’re the only person in this genre of content I watch Because of the way you present. do whatever seems right and I promise even folks like me aren’t going to have trouble understanding your dialect.

I could understand about half of what you said there. Originally I’m from Iowa in the untidy states of amerika and have lived on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
I do luv seeing diff. breeds of sheep. I also like seeing the muscles on the arms of shearers.🦌💌🙏🐑👍

Terrific video. Loved the drone shots and the information about the different breeds and crosses. Some folks we know here had a few 4 horned Jacobs. Cranky beggers they were too. John managed that one nicely. 👍

Cammie, I love watching your videos I treasure the smiles & laughs each one adds to my day. I’m getting better at understanding your dialect, and appreciate your willingness to slow down your rate of speech to help us with that.
I do have a question about the audio, though. Have you considered using a directional microphone instead of the camera mic? Whenever you turn your head to speak to someone beside or behind you, it’s very hard to hear what you’re saying, and I, for one, don’t want to miss a word!

Great vid, loved the example pics of the breeds used to make the combos. Half bred was new to me, so great to see where it comes from. Looked quite a beast when John got her out! Fern looks huge compared to her last appearance. How did the herras fencing training pen work out? Great to hear some Ayrshire dialect on the footage. More please! 😀 🏴
I’m currently experimenting with BFL top and Leister Longwool ewes. My ram is 360lbs and ewes 230-250lbs but the mules grow to 220lbs by 12 month meat sales and can reach up to 420lbs. It is a sound meat production program if you are willing to plan for the longer maturation time and still be ready with product for Nov-Dec. holiday rush on meat. CIDR plays its part as this breed doesn’t like to breed but once in Sept for about 9 weeks...which math tells you doesn’t work for max meat weight for the holidays! The prime benefit which secures customers is that I only grass feed after weaning and no grain or substitutions. The lamb meat has been compares to ‘sweet meats’ or Kobe beef with less ‘tang’. It is the best meat any of my customers have ever tried. I give away the first roast or leg and I have a 100% customer retention rate so far! The key is that due to slow maturation these lambs cannot be considered mutton before 18 months when they are mature enough to breed..even an 8 month ewe at 300lbs is easy to market and current lamb prices demand maximizing production.

Looks like a crawfish glommed onto you blade. They're good boiled with tomatoes, onions, corn on the cob, potatoes, sausage and hot sauce.
I'm from the USA, and sometimes you do get talking fast, plus with the local jargon, I can't understand what is being said, but I still love watching and hope I gradually become fluent in Scottish- if that is a correct term.
Awww I love seeing sheep as my family had to sell our pet sheep but I just love seeing the white wooly wonders of the earth thanks for being kind to sheep and taking care of them good man you deserve a medal 🎖

You should see a vid of some of my family from deep in the Panhandle of West Texas, see if YOU can understand THEM! Haha, sometimes I have to stop them and go, "Whut?"

Roll that bottom tooth over a little on kombats and thin the tip do all with 1200 wet and dry sandpaper. Pretty much only comb I use on ewes
Just like the plumber who’s pipes leak or the mechanic who’s car runs rough...the shearer’s sheep are always the last to see the blade! But what matters is that they are comfortable and healthy. I use a conservative 13 tine Spirit comb without the flaired side teeth and the matching cutter. Heineger is the contractor/manufacturer for the company that sells them. I crutch my own lambs and show trim but after 22 year career of military and competitive rock climbing my shoulders and back are crumbling (literally) with arthritis from many falls, motorcycle accidents, back surgeries, breaks and injuries..shattered knee and finally both knees replaced totally...I now hire a contractor for the regular shearing of my 164kg rams and my 110kg ewes. But I’m only 59 and I’ve set my hard retirement age at 80. If I can walk or crawl I will keep sheep! BFL and Leicester Longwool mules can reach 100kg at 8 months for market!

You're so funny and I'm sure your jokes during this time are hilarious but often I can't understand you. The wind might be part of it. No matter what I will continue to watch you and hope that I'll be able to understand once lambing starts again. What do you market your sheep for are they wool producers milkers or for meat? I have thought of raising sheep but wool market is terrible and not much demand for meat production in the states?

My son and I enjoy your videos. But I have one question, I notice that you use a rigid shaft that runs your clippers and the shearer that I get has flexible shafts. What is the difference and the reason you choose?
The solid drive is much easier because it does all the work for you. As you pull back it pushes forward and vice versa. A flexi u have to do all the work. For a solid drive you have to have pretty good technique though or you end up out of position and it doesn’t work so well.
With the solid shaft will that make it so they don't nick the lamb as easy? I see in your video you shearing is smooth and not many nicks. Here in the states and in Iowa, where I am at it is getting hard to find shearers. You ever get my way I would have you shear them!

@@TheSheepGame I raise goats as a hobby and participated in the local 4-H program at my high school showing in the show ring. The only issues I have with my livestock are foot rot and my bad tendency to quick them when trimming hooves. And that's with using the shears, not the hoof knife!!!
What combs do you use for Cheviots in May?
Anything thin. Quantums or super chargers be good.

I see it there. It would be a wee bit of scald which is common when the grass gets long. We ran them through a foot bath which would have sorted him out 😁

I do sell it but for 700 fleeces last year I got £120 🥺

u must think that anyone older then u should not shear sheep?? my great grand father at 103 years old still sheared his sheep every year and he used manual shears long pointed kinda sizzers, not power shears like u use, and he can do a sheep in under 10 minutes. u scotish people have a distorted way of looking at your elders.
