  • The sun is back and we are shearing sheep again!
    This time we are with well known sheepdog men from the Welsh clan!!
    Enjoy

    ABOUT ME
    I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland. That’s why I have such a strong accent!! I was born and raised in sheep with my dad being a shepherd on an Ayrshire farm.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep.
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then, in 2015, my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could keep my hand in. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 ewes.
    I shear over 10,000 sheep a season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September.
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep scanner and have been building up my run since then so I have a good income stream in summer and winter.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    Glad you have broached the subject about apprentice shearers! Was hoping to get into a course this year but Covid sorted that out. Am now hoping to get on to a course next year or possibly see if the Farmer i lamb for's shearer will take me on as an apprentice when they do the Ewe Lambs in September - Cant wait to get the first 100

    Good Murray
    I’ve hand sheared 135 scotch ewes back in 1987 ,
    I started at 9am finished at 7.40 pm .
    No sheep trailer had to pull them out and catch them in the shed by myself
    I was 19 years old, 50 pence a sheep. Every ewe I sheared paid to get my hay bailed by a small square bailer.
    It was 50 pence a bale. To get it bailed .
    So after the first 600 sheep. I could buy myself a pint .you guys don’t know your living.
    No land rover
    Walked to all the farms over hills loved it three pairs off sheared in my back pocket jumping over ditches .
    I’m still sheep farming love it
    Keep up the good work.

    Good looking blackies. Also good to see the young lad learning. When I first started shearing it would be my hamstrings that were ruined at the end of a day. Now its my whole body as I am oldish and don't do enough sheep to get back into it properly. Randomly I am curious about how often you change your combs and cutters? Do you have a set number of sheep or time for each? Or just change when you feel them going blunt? Maybe something you can include in a future vid. Thanks.

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 года назад +1

      Hi mate. When i started everything hurt!! Was brutal! I think it’s easier for Murray because his technique is already really good where as mine was terrible at first and hasn’t got much better 😂. Regarding combs / cutters. The Uk is quite different than the Southern Hemisphere. U can get away with using a comb for 2 hours here on clean sheep. Cutters could easily do 30 mins even an hour in some cases. I have a vlog coming where i shear shetland ewes in Orkney and i did 180 with one comb. Probably had it running for 3.5 hours! I’d generally just change them when going blunt and usually use 3-4 cutters to a comb.

      @99037149 3 года назад

      @@TheSheepGame thanks for the reply. I am up in the Highlands and some of our sheep can be quite sandy so it can blunt your gear fairly rapidly. I made a bit of an arse of learning. I had been doing a few each year and picked up every bad habit you could imagine then a went on a course and was shown the right way but that lasted about 10 sheep and then I was back to the way I had been doing it. Technique makes everything so much more straight forward.

    Do many of your clients sell their wool to Ireland? I have heard they pay better than the wool board but probably wouldn't make a difference just now.

      Cheers for the idea Dazza i’ll cover that! Most contractors are £1.35 - £1.50 here. Boys be getting about £0.95-£1.20.

      All the shearing crews in Texas are predominately Hispanic and they are all mostly older. It’s becoming a huge problem and most ranchers are transitioning to hair goats because of it. That being said, it’s $4-5 a head/ (1 tick) for ewes and 5 ticks for bucks or rams! You should come to Texas put on a clinic and afterward we can drink some beer!

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 года назад +1

      I like shearing hoggs because batches are usually very even so u can work on your pattern better. Shearing milk ewes is great because they have no bellies and open/ bare points but you get a mixed bag of lean ewes / fat ewes and everything in between. If you can get on a smaller breed like a herdwick or cheviots / blackface to begin with it makes it easier to turn them back over when they stand up on you😂
