  • Todd Kenreck talks with Jeremy Crawford about the larger focus on the lore of the multiverse in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.
    Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
    A bestiary of wondrous friends and foes for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.
    Sparkling with the musings of the wizard Mordenkainen, this tome features a host of creatures for use in the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Hailing from every corner of the multiverse, these creatures represent some of the most benevolent and malevolent forces that D&D heroes might face.
    The book also gathers together fantastical peoples from many different worlds. Each of these peoples represents a race option when you create your D&D character, expanding on the choices in the Player’s Handbook.
    Compiling and updating monsters that originally appeared in Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, this book presents friends and foes for any D&D campaign, many of them accompanied by the comments of Mordenkainen. The wizard has faced many of these monsters and peoples on numerous wondrous adventures. Now it’s time for you to venture forth and face these creatures yourself!
    Includes over 250 monsters. Updates to the monsters include making spellcasters easier for Dungeon Masters to run; giving many monsters more damage and resilience; and improving the organization of the stat blocks themselves.
    Includes over 30 playable races. Brings all the game’s setting-agnostic races into one book, complementing the races in the Player’s Handbook.
    A multiverse of lore. Includes updates to monster lore that refocuses the stories on the D&D multiverse, rather than on any particular world.

    Excessive fiction lore was cited as a reason to nuke much fiction lore. And then the whole fiction side of the house was eventually even dropped.

    I'm very glad that Wizards is choosing to deal with many of these "problematic" things through a multiverse standpoint. I was always a fan of orcs being villains, and so WOTC has done an awesome job of still allowing that while also freeing up less confident DMs to make orcs heroes or morally gray if they want. I'm not psyched about removing lore from old books, but otherwise this seems cool.

      We might get a Spelljammer book this year. We're not going to get a Planescape book in 5e.
      How do I know Planescape isn't coming? Becuase of Ravnica and Strixhaven. Sigil is a planar metropolis dominated by ten guilds. Ravnica is a planar metropolis dominated by ten guilds.
      We already got the ten guilds in a mega city book. The only way we'd get another ten guilds book in 5e is if there was a new game mechanic that each of the guilds could bring to the table and spur non DM interest in the setting book. A new mechanic like, I don't know, each guild having a subclass that could be taken up by its guildmembers belonging to 3 or 4 different base classes that didn't already have a subclass that fit the guild's theme.
      Something like we saw in the Strixhaven UA, oh wait...

    • @Veltharis
      @Veltharis 2 года назад +4

      @@CitanulsPumpkin Planescape is more than just Sigil - it's the Great Wheel cosmology.
      Yes, I'd want a dedicated chapter for Sigil and an appropriate amount of Faction support, but for the most part I'm envisioning it as a "Manual of the Planes" type book, and I think that's perfectly within scope for their stated intent to explore the D&D multiverse, with plenty of material that differentiates it from Ravnica and Strixhaven.
      If they do that and open up "Planescape" as a setting option for third-party DM's Guild content like they did for Eberron (and Ravenloft, I think), then that's good enough for me.

    • @Veltharis
      @Veltharis 2 года назад +1

      @UCbvA6A36JWHnFgvs8bFCWBA I have an extensive 3/3.5e collection, so I know quite well how little Sigil representation was given back in the day. But I also have the 4e DMG2, which had a good 30-page sub-chapter on Sigil.
      Give that an update and maybe expand it a bit, and that would be largely sufficient for the purposes of introducing the Cage to new readers. Handling the Factions is tougher on a mechanical front, yes, but far from insurmountable - a good selection of feats and background options would do a lot. After that, some planar races (bariaur, old-school tieflings), and a new subclass or two, and the rest of the book could be just filling out the Great Wheel.
      Speaking of the Great Wheel, frankly, I don't see it going anywhere. Word of alignment's impending demise has been vastly overstated, so far as I can tell - just because it's now less baked in on a PC and mortal NPC level doesn't mean it's somehow being ripped out of the Outer Planes and their native denizens, and unless they plan on completely rebuilding the "default cosmology" of D&D from scratch (a la 4e) in a way that doesn't take alignment into account, I don't see them throwing the Great Wheel out. There are far too many established characters and far too much established lore baked into the collective D&D subconscious to do that, especially after they went to the trouble of bringing it back for 5e in the first place.
      Could it turn out that WotC's big "multiverse" plans amount to "here's a bunch of new prime material settings and some Spelljammer to glue it all together"? Sure. And if so, then I'll be disappointed.
      But I choose to remain hopeful, and the arguments that "Alignment is dead, so no more Great Wheel" and "Sigil's too much like Ravnica for them to bother" ultimately just ring hollow to me.
      As to Planebreaker, I am interested to see what comes of it and will almost certainly be stealing ideas from it if it is to my liking, but I'm not going to be using it as my new "planar game" setting by any means.
      EDIT: Comment I was responding to isn't here anymore... :/

      My guess is that they saw how receptive Marvel (cinematic) audience were to the idea of multiverses. And then they realized they could revive that concept in DnD to help them solve two issues - Faerun-specific racial alignment and the fact that many people didn't buy Volo's, Mordenkainen's, Theros etc.

    I'm really not a fan of this broad multiverse perspective WotC has taken with their recent products.
    It's like there doesn't exist any concrete lore anymore, when everything has a big "This is how it might be, but maybe not in your setting" asterisk next to it.
    DMs and their groups have always made their own adjustments to rules and lore to fit their home games and homebrew settings. For the groups that do that, established lore from published books has never limited their options. But when groups do want to run published campaigns in official settings, these new books leave them with no solid ground to stand on.
    Broadening your scope to the multiverse only makes the details of each individual setting suffer.
    How many campaigns are going to actually care about settings beyond their own? I'd argue almost none.

    So, I'm a little newer here. I don't already have Volo's and the other Mordenkainen's, this is basically just those two together and with a little more, right? I guess I'm technically setting-agnostic, but is all the lore of the two predecessors also in this book too? I kinda like to base my lore mostly on a mix of Forgotten Realms with a dash of Greyhawk and some other random stuff I see fit.

    • @JustinTotino
      @JustinTotino Год назад +3

      The lore in Volo's Guide and Tome of Foes assumes you are playing in Forgotten Realms with dashes of other settings. Monsters of the Multiverse is a compliation and update of the player character races and monster stat blocks from those two books plus races and monsters from a couple of adventure books but makes them all setting agnostic. The lore pieces from Volo's and Tome of Foes are not included.
      It should be noted: a chunk of the lore from Volo's and Tome of Foes was also removed from current pressings of the Volo's and Tome books too (which I find to be a odd and silly move on WotC's part). So if you are looking specifically for the original lore text from those books, you'll have to track down physcial copies of the 1st pressings of those books.

    I get why they're doing this from a business stand point. You're making it easier for new DMs to get all of this material, and you are setting up a proper multi-verse.
    As someone who's spent hundreds of dollars getting all of the books this is from, I'm annoyed.
    This, following the half baked book, Strixhaven (which I'm running), just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
    Love the direction this is going, but I'm not going to be purchasing this product.

    • @CitanulsPumpkin
      @CitanulsPumpkin 2 года назад +3

      To be fair, Strixhaven is the result of idiots reacting poorly to the planned content in the UA and causing half the plans for that book to be scrapped. The lesson isn't that WotC doesn't know how to write these books. The lesson is don't listen to arm chair DMs and munchkins on reddit when they rant and rave about a mechanic that was going to be the centerpiece of the 5e Planescape book we are now never going to see.
      As for reprints, there's a lot of upgrades and changes. All the monster stat blocks are streamlined for better use and referencing during gameplay. Just about all the PC races got significant errata. Sunlight sensitivity and negative stat mods are gone. All natural weapons now deal 1d6 damage. Half of them were 1d4 before. The changes aren't all as big as what Fizban's did for dragonborn, but many of them are in the ballpark.
      Sure Kobolds lost pack tactics, but they got other stuff in its place. And aaracockra got their fly speed reduced from 50 to 30, but they got other stuff that puts them more in line with the Owlin and Pixie for number of racial traits and benefits.
      Is it another reference book they expect you to buy? Yeah. WotC is a giant corporation. Not your friend. But it's still a useful tool for referencing at the game table, and it's a hint of the sweeping changes coming to 5e in 2024.

However, the way they combined stuff in this book is unbelievably stupid. If this is intended for players with races, why would you give them all the monster statblocks? Half the fun of DND is the mystery around each foe. You don't want them just reading off their hitpoints. If they were to do this, they could have done a players version with all the subclasses, spells, and races and a DM version with all the monsters and magic items.
