You pick: Highlander XSE or Sienna XSE? This is a common choice for people....do you go midsize SUV for you and your family or go minivan? Thanks everyone I appreciate you all! Jeff
I'm leaning Highlander XSE but I admit the Sienna XSE 2nd row and 3rd row leg room is a plus and the MPG a huge advantage but the fact that it is a minivan I pass....when Toyota makes the Sienna sit higher live the SUV, I'll switch over.
I went into this thinking there's no way someone compared these two vehicles, and sure enough, I came across your video. Thank you so much, fantastic video!!!
I used to have a 2019 Highlander SE and now I have a 2021 Sienna XSE. We are a family of 6 and the Highlander was getting cramped. I never thought I’d be driving a minivan but It’s much more practical for my family and I. So far, I love it! It’s nice, comfortable, spacious, and I save in gas. I recommend the Sienna for a bigger family as I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. :)
Just found your channel yesterday. You made my decision making process a no brainer; buying the Sienna. My parents are in their 80's and giving up driving soon, and my kids are 8 and 11. Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.
I drove a Sienna for 16 years and I was thinking to go with a Highlander, but after seeing this video I have to admit that Sienna is the way to go. When you go into a Sienna you feel the roominess, the space, it gives the feeling of having a lot of car. When you travel and go in vacation you have room to sleep if you need to, you have room to put a lot of stuff in your car, you can go easy from front to rear. If you buy plywood or other things like that you have room, and since the engine in Sienna is very powerfull, (I am talking about 2020 Sienna not hybrid) you can go on Yosemite or Blue Ridge and have plenty of power on your car... So, yes, after this video I have to admit that my soul is still on SIENNA, this is the car to go, no matter what sporty feeling or look could be in Higlander. Having a little bit more power on Highlander is not worth having so much plenty of space as in Sienna. Love Sienna...
Thank you. Great video!! I have a Sienna, over 15 years and 210K miles but want to get away from minivan. Was shopping for Highlander but after watching your video I know I am going to miss the space Sienna offers.
Will be retiring in July 2022. We have grown kids that still enjoy vacationing with us as well as elderly parents. I love the Sienna and am looking to purchase one post retirement. This video was terrific and solidified my decision.
Thanks Frank that is great of you to say. I hope you get many years of fun family vacation time together. That is great they still want to spend time with you :)
I like the Sienna because when I lived in Florida I used to rent mini vans with smoked windows to drive to the beach. I would change in the back of the car and have a cooler for food and drinks. This Sienna would be great for this!
I like the Sienna. More interior Space and I love the Bridge Deck console. I also love the 36MPG. Can't beat that for this size vehicle. I am 70 and the Sienna would work well for us taking the grandkids places. Love it.
I like both, leaning more to the Sienna - easier to get in both for kids and elderly parents. The only thing I’m wondering is why you didn’t choose a hybrid Highlander ( that would’ve been comparing apples to apples) that was a miss. Great video though:)
I love me a min-van! and I cannot lie. (in 60 years old so I don't know why....) But I do know. I love the room. Even though my kids have flown the coup. They were just little ones when I bought my 2004...
I am not buy Sienna yet. It seems this car is really the car has been companied you and your family to go through every growing moment of your life. I’m imaginning that I start going through wonderful life on my own road with 2021 Sienna, like you’ve been start with 2004 Sienna.
Jeff, I wish either you were in Canada or I could buy from your dealer. You really are the best salesperson I have seen. I would have preferred to do business with you, even if it means flying over there. Thanks for all these great videos
I chose and bought the Highlander SXE because my kids are not small anymore but I wanted more room, I have one in college and the Highlander gives me plenty of room to get him there and also tows 5000 lbs if I need it.
hey jeff! i love your videos and they are very informational and your peppy personality is great! i think it would be cool if you did a dealership life style playlist where you walk through selling a car. also, i would take the sienna for cargo room and seems more practical.
I want a highlander! BUT…. I have three big dogs so I need a sienna…. I have a 2014 sienna….. wanted to upgrade to a smaller more “adult with 15 year old kids” car… I just can’t pull away from the sienna. Really love my van!
Thank you for posting video. Lots of cool features in the Sienna. Foot activated side and rear doors seem really nice. Looks like Toyota has done their homework with the updated drive handling on the Sienna as well. Take care everyone.
Man, your videos are awesome, not like Doug-Demuro-entertainment awesome, but actually a new confused-Toyota-buyer awesome. Keep up the amazing job you're doing.
Great comparison. Thanks Jeff. We just bought our 2021 Sienna XLS in the Predawn gray with the plus pkg. It’s a great vehicle. I’m 38 with 3 kids and struggled initially with the stigma of vans... until I saw the new model. We have a ‘16 Sequoia Lmtd, and after looking at other SUVS for our second car, I buckled down and embraced my decision. I’m feelin’ this van for sure! Driven 100mi, and the needle hasn’t moved
Jeff, Test drive both at the same time? I'd like to see that video. Here is a fun fact for you, Sienna outsold Highlander in Canada last year. In terms of plywood testing, may I suggest a 4X8 sheet of styrofoam insulation as a lighter alternative? Finally, if you are intending to tow with your Sienna of Highlander, I highly recommend AWD as you will benefit with power to the rear wheels.
Nice review. They are basically the same vehicle (drive train identical for the hybrids) except one is much bigger and versatile than the other yet both get the same mileage. I've always thought of the Highlander (and other big CUVs) as a small minivan w/o sliding doors.
I need my ground clearance. I choose Highlander. Unfortunately, almost all vehicle front under body are very fragile with very important items underneath. Even if not off-roading, just driving through some grocery parking lot with steep or downward exits/entrances damage the front underbody over time. Although, 8.0 inches of ground clearance might not be much for the Highlander but its more reasonable compared to Sienna for sure.
@@aimxdy8680 Bro its not the same everywhere you might not feel it sometimes also if you live where its ice/snows a lot, its best to have extra ground clearance. I have seen people destroying their front underbody while parking in and out of places where its snows a lot, or when there is a significant curve on the road at certain angles or driving over a puddle of water on damaged roads after heavy rain. Also, the fact that 99% of Cars/SUVs have a flimsy underbody which makes things even worse. That being said, I would rather purchase a vehicle that has sufficient ground clearance to handle most terrains or driving conditions.
@@CelestialTrailblazer That’s if you are driving a slammed out sports car, 5 inches of ground clearance is ENOUGH for hills, also a crossover isn’t much better than a minivan, they still has 20 inch wheels and small tires where a minivan has more tires than wheels making it better for unideal terrain, unless you are off-roading in a rocky trail in some narrow creek, you do not need ground clearance past 5 inches. I live near chicago where potholes are common everywhere and average temperature in winter is below freezing and 40+ inches of snow per year with Icy roads, my RS3 handles superb, tires matter more than car. Highlander has higher centre of gravity making it prone to more bodyroll than a sienna. We get severe weather in illinois and lots of tornadoes capable of destroying lots of things and yet my RS3 still is going strong with no damage, I own an RS3 and Odyssey, none of which is are damaged and my Odyssey been through a severe storm and hit some potholes and it’s still going strong with no damage.
Thanks for making this. I currently have a 2022 hybrid Highlander Bronze Edition on hold and after watching this, I may change that to a Sienna. I HATE that I want a mini van but DANG it's hard to say no that that.

I think Toyota is making it confusing by having the Highlander XSE as a gas-only trim level, when both the Sienna XSE and RAV4 XSE are hybrid-only trim levels.
I think they did that on purpose to discourage folks from spending less. I absolutely ADORE the rav4 xse. But, I'm not fond of hybrids (long term will cost an arm and a leg to replace batteries).
Drove a 22 Sienna during vacation and loved it. We have had several Siennas over the years and also a 2016 Highlander. It is hard to give up a minivan even after the need for one goes away. I looked at a used 22 XSE Sienna yesterday and loved it too! I just don't know if I want to go back.
I was gonna vote Sienna cause it is phenomenal but the hybrid is a killer for me. Hopefully the Grand Highlander is as cool as 2021 Sienna but V6 power
I don't like that the Highlander doesn't have the panaramic moon roof, but I do do like the spacious third row. The trunk of the sienna wasn't normal truck looking when the third row was laid down, but I liked the way the front and back door handles are close to each other.
We have a Highlander right now and would like a XSE or XLE Sienna. We do love our highlander and the way it rides, but we know the Sienna rides beautifully and it has great MPG.
If the Highlander XSE was also available in hybrid I would probably choose it, but in this case I am leaning toward the Sienna XSE as it looks really sharp especially with the 20 inch black wheels. One thing that is disappointing though is that small multi information display in the center gauge and the lack of memory seating...otherwise I really like the Sienna! Thanks for the review Jeff!
I tested drive both highlander and sienna, i like the roomy of the sienna, but the 4 cylinders is loud when i hit the gas pedal, but when driving around the parking lot is very quiet in EV mode, like the power of the highlander and quite of that v6 engine, but i have two kids i will take the sienna for the roomer space and great on gas too
I need something that handles well in the snow just a couple times per year. How do they compare? Your video makes the ground clearance look the same for both vehicles, but is that true? The higher ground clearance, the better for snow. Is XSE lower to the ground than XLE and other trims?
You should have tried to sit in the 3rd row seats of the Highlander. People say that they are too small even for children. Is that true? If these seats are not practical, what is the point of considering this as a 3-row SUV?
To be honest, my pick would be the Sienna. I absolutely love the leg room. But unfortunately I don't need all that room and space. But the Highlander XSE would definitely be my pick. I love the Blueprint Color. You can't go wrong with the Highlander or Sienna. I think both are great choices.
I typically lean towards bigger MPG but I'm not really into minivans although my kids are teens now and pretty tall leg room and head room is a must so as much as I would prefer the Highlander I think I have no choice but to lean to the Sienna for practicality reasons
Are the seats in the second row of the Highlander adjustable in where they sit? Can you slide them back for more leg room? Can you lay the third row seats down completely flat? My current vehicle does this and is perfect for me as 99% of the time I use the bigger trunk space and 1% of the time I may need to fit an extra passenger or 2 into the third row.
Judging miles per gallon wasn't fair. The Highlander you demoed was not a hybrid tho they do make hybrid and mpg is about the same vs the Sienna which was a hybrid. Both car's middle seat back, by the looks of it, do not fold all the way forward down flat. Neither Highlander nor the Sienna middle seats are removable, correct? I've gone camping when I had a Mazda MPV and the middle seats were removable and the 3rd row folded into a well. With all that space I was able to fit a flat bottom boat into it with the tail gate left open for the rest of the boat sticking out. These 2 cars that you're showing I would never be able to fit my flat bottom boat into it. Maybe with the Sienna's length and move the middle seats all the way forward, the boat might fit. But I doubt it would fit in the Highlander.
The middle seats not coming out, and the bridge at front row, this van is turning into a large SUV. For these reasons would not consider the Sienna for my next vehicle.
How long before someone's hydro flask rolls from under the bridge deck storage onto the driver's side while the Sienna is being driven :-) ? Thoughts ?

Highlander with sliding doors would be awesome
I wish the xse Highlander came with full softtech seating not digging the cloth insert!!
That's my opinion as well.
I love your videos. Make sure to take some time out to take care of yourself!
Sienna best all around deal
Thoughts ?
My take is I own a 2019 highlander and I love it but the way I see it if I’m going to put out 30k plus for a vehicle I need great mpg. So torn
Highlander comes in hybrid now
I like sienna better , look like it has more space for kids and It is convenient for elderly
