After knowing all the story of Johnny Depp, how her mom abused him and all his brothers and even his father and how he had to go through a lot of bad things since he was a little kid, the character of Gilbert Grape reminds me a lot of his own personal history. I know Gilbert wasn’t abused, but he had also a very hard and difficult life and had to take care of himself almost his whole life, like Johnny. I’m almost sure he saw himself reflected on Gilbert too when he did the movie

and till this day he says filming this movie was such a low time for him and he doesn’t know why and maybe he feels this because it probably subconsciously remind him of his childhood and just how things were in life while growing up, or possibly his break up with winona, who knows! but i agree that his character as gilbert is the most relatable to him yet.
Just watched Grape for the first time …. totally stunned by Leonardo’s chameleon-like performance in this film … so real to the character … and Depp’s quality shines through too showing why they have both enjoyed such a range of interesting acting roles since they made this film.
What a gem of a movie and marvelous acting. I have been volunteering in an orphanage where there were mostly kids with limited mental and physical abilities. Seeing Leo’s acting was so surreal like how he could convey all of those complex feelings through his acting.

I loveddd❤❤❤ this movie not only Leo's character was amazing but Johnny's character also since i can relate to him, having an 18yr old son with disabilities its sooo difficult to just think about your own self you just focused on the person that needs you more than anything, and you have to swallowed your emotions, your sadness in front of my son i have to be wonder woman do absolutely everything with zero sadness, or tiredness is very challenging
