I imagine this interview was done in the middle of filming Pirates of the Caribbean... Not much choice how he looks if he's changed his appearance for a role
Between Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp I choose Leo. He has made so many wonderful movies and it was ab time for him to get an Oscar. Leo is a great actor: very natural. I feel like Johnny Depp HAS TO use props (make up, characterization, etc) in order to deliver. Leo has himself and he can really transport/convince the viewer what's he's going thru in his character. Love him badly bc I feel like he is in the right field. Also, I hope he doesn't stop acting until bc his acting is a gift.
Ny Jeep Adventurer you don’t have to hide the fact that you thought Leo was autistic, I don’t really know, but I think it’s actually a compliment to him and his acting
sj11791 so i know you may think i’m crazy for saying this because i thought it was crazy when i heard about it from a teacher of mine 6 years ago. but supposedly she met johnny depp at a airport where she was by herself at 16, and she talked to him for a good minute and johnny supposedly told her about how he doesn’t like leo. i totally forgot about what she said to us but my friend that was in the same class told me she remembered but we thought she was crazy because supposedly her dad sold her to another family. i wish i was lying and i wish she was lying!!!
I agree. Every time I watch it I can't help but think how could he not have won? His words, actions, even the way he walked was consistent and very believable. That was one hell of a hard part to play.
+Cissy2cute this and 'the basketball diaries' each time I watch both these movies it pisses me off how long it took for him to finally get recognised for his amazing work!
Bethany Rose Guess he must have pissed somebody off early on in his career. Funny how so many actors win these awards and yet a lot of us are left with the feeling that something is wrong with these people who cast their votes for the candidates. Hope that makes sense--haven't had my coffee yet!
before watching this film, I couldn't stand DiCaprio: I was a teenager, and I thought that Leo was famous just because he was handsome, and the other teenage girls loved him. (I thought he was what today you'd call "a Justin Bieber"). Then I watched this film, and I was struck: DiCaprio was AMAZING. Since then, he has become my favourite actor. He truly is the best actor of his generation
I still have no idea how leo was so young but still pulled off the role with such perfection. I cannot picture anybody else as Arnie. Absolute massive genius. Some real deep acting chops by Leonardo. Nothing but mad MAD respect for this man. Thank God for Leonardo DiCaprio.
This is no doubt one of my most favorite movies in the world! The acting in this movie was superb..... And I still don't think it got the recognition that it deserved
@@Kiran-cy1xr Not true. This movie came out in 1993, which means they were done shooting, in 1992. Johnny and Winona went from 1989 to 1993. They were still together.
I wish I could go back to 1993. Life was so much simpler then. It truely was. This movie makes me nostalgic for my youth. Such a great movie that's really underappreciated and almost seems forgotten.
Darlene Cates astounds me every time I watch this movie. You get the impression that she'd been acting for 20 years, and never guess that this was her debut performance. There are so few films that call for actresses like her, especially for such a central role, and the ones that do tend to scale back the more extreme aspects of the characters, like Momma's obesity or Arnie's developmental delay. The Gilbert Grape filmmakers didn't care if some of their audience felt socially or emotionally uncomfortable watching it, and I admire that. They could've hired a well-known actress and put her in a fat suit, but there would have been this layer of fantasy that obstructed the audience's view due to their knowledge that Momma was really a slim, famous lady just pretending. It might have made it easier to focus on Momma's personality and character development, as opposed to getting hung up on her appearance. But they cast Darlene Cates instead, and her performance forces you to see her how Gilbert sees her, not as the mere visual spectacle that most people consider her to be. She was a great and underappreciated talent.
when this movie came out we were just little kids so we used to laugh and joke at it, but now that im older I realize how good of a movie this is and how good it actually is.
Arnie is not an autistic character. He has learning disabilities and the mental age of a child. At the time of the film's production little was known about autism but the way the character's condition is portrayed, it is obviously not autism.
The correct term is mentally challenged or autistic or developmentally disabled, but yes Leo did do a wonderful job. Just like his "Romeo + Juliet" co-star, Claire Danes did a wonderful job playing a some what similar role in the movie "Temple Grandin" Real life people like Arnie can be interesting but you gotta have a lot of patience with them.
Jordan Sprouse The actual technical term "retardation" is the slowing or limitations of development. Mentally retarded is only a "bad" word because people make it so.
No matter how many films Johnny Depp has done I will always know him the best as Gilbert Grape..this is such a lovely movie with alot of heart and Johnny was the perfect person to play Gilbert
It was an incredibly superb acting by Leo. I was born in 1999 and I wasn't able to witness this amazing moment that I could have had, but I am really grateful because of him, he always fills my day whenever I watch his previous movies which are absolutely appealing to me. I am a huge fan, Leo. Love from the Philippines! 😘 I Love you wholeheartedly! 😘😘😘💜💜💜
Leo was such a sport when he gave it a shot at Arnie Grape even though he was unsure if he would do the role well but low and behold, Leo totally nailed the character. He should’ve won an Oscar.
Even though Leo was acting it still seems like he was more mature in growing pains and he was 15 when he was acting in growing pains BEST ACTOR IN THE WORLD!!!
Fun fact: Leo has actually turned down an offer from Disney channel at that time waiting to audition for this part. He was just 16 years old when he made a life changing decision that shaped the direction of his acting career.
I saw this movie when it first came out and just fell in love with it, all the actors were brilliant and I can relate, I have an older brother who is mentally challenged and growing up I always protected him from the cruel world.
Watched the movie last night after not watching it for years and I have to say this might be Leo's best role yet. He is such an amazing actor and his portrayal was sooooo convincing it's insane! Can't believe he doesn't have more Oscar's!

Leonardo DiCaprio's best performance before Titanic
+swapnil roy before Titanic and Romeo & Juliet I agree 100% with you
He did so well
+swapnil roy This one is better than Titanic for sure!!
+swapnil roy I agree this movie was beyond amazing! Johnny Depp was great too!
no wrong titanic WAS better
Probably the only normal character depp played that I can remember
nightmare on elm street too..
Chloe Kelly a pirate and a guy with scissor hands isn’t normal or not like something an everyday person is used to seeing bud
How about the original 21 Jump Street
His role in fear and loathing a close 2nd I think.
“Nick of time.”
