How much bass and how deep the bass is blows my mind, it really rocks, but then I have the crossover set at 50hz, I can't even imagine setting it higher, especially since that's the bottom of the A5+ speakers
Thinking of adding this to my home theater. I haven't seen any comments or reviews of people adding this to a Home theater but mostly just adding it to other Audioengine bookshelf speakers.
I think it would be a decent addition, you might actually turn it past half volume. imo, it's also one of the best deals. I have the same style as Jarrad got, and it does have frequency response to 24htz, making it the cheapest sub-25htz subwoofer out there, and it's decent quality. mine has been in storage for most of its 10 years, but it's still ticking after 10 years like new, that's definitely something. The sound clarity doesn't kick in until 27htz, but things under 30 htz are felt more than heard anyways.
I just got a great deal on a pair of used A5's but i'm a basshead so if I can find a used S8 i'd be thrilled because according to audioengine the sub goes down to 27hz which is really deep
I got a used s8 from B&H. it doesn't match my s2+ (white vs black) but that's not a dealbreaker for me, as the sub is under the desk out of view. and price? came in around $200 US, so about 40-45% off, pretty good deal.
it goes down to 24 htz but it's muddy af, the volume doesn't really drop off, though. At least on the older version, the new version has a phase switch instead of a knob, i believe and probably different internals, cause i think it has bluetooth, or it just needs an antenna. But I'm very pleased, I feel like this subwoofer is slept on. Even at 350 it's a good deal.
I just bought a brand new S8 but the phase control is just a little tiny toggle switch now instead of an attenuator knob like you've got and I can't hear any difference with it
Hey Jarrod, nice and crisp review. Now, I am thinking to get these to pair with my A2+. Are these too loud for a small to medium-sized room? Can we place them on a carpeted floor?
I have mine on a carpeted floor and it's fine, still gets plenty loud. You can adjust the volume and various settings quite a bit, so you can lower it down to suit.
I bought my 5+ speakers with the sub and I've been very happy! The sub has a ton of sound, so be careful if you live in an apartment building. My last apartment my upstairs and downstairs neighbors hated me.... so for my new place I'm buying a subwoofer pad. Anyway, good review!
He's asking if it starts automatically at low volume when listening to music or playing content, since in your review you stated that it turns itself off automatically to save energy.
My setup is Crushing Good , never heard of Audioengine until a Friend told me about it , don't sleep on this setup I even have the seperate DAC that goes with this system, Fantastic you won't be disappointed!
i have the A2, the speakers themselves are good, but for 400 they were definitely overpriced. then the 500 for the sub on top of that... makes 900 for a very small speaker setup. they arent bad, the speakerboxes are heavy and feel like theyre made of good quality stuff... buuuut when you consider that a pair of studio monitors cost half the price... for 900 you could buy a small PA. the price is just not right.
the booklet describes using the S8 as the main connection and sending the RCA out from the sub to the speakers. But if the whole setup is audioengine I really don't think it matters. Just as long as the RCA out from one goes to the RCA in to the other.
Are you required to use the RCA OUTS for the crossover part to effectively work? What would happen with the crossover knob if you were only using the RCA IN comming from your A5+'s. Probly the subs frequency cutoff would change but the A5+ would continue to play the full spectrum of music in conjuction.
Great review. I just ordered one in white as well to complement my existing 5+ speakers. Do you need to break in this subwoofer as you would regular speakers?
I think the spider in the sub may need some break in. It's kinda general rule I think , I'm a noob so not sure. I've had about a 20hour break in haven't really noticed too much different
Hi Jarrod, Great video as always. I was just wondering; do you get these products for free when you review them? Is RUclips your only income? Sorry if that's too personal a question.
Hey, thanks! I make videos in my spare time as a hobby, I work full time in computer security as a penetration tester. A months worth of RUclips money is less than a days worth of money at my job, so I'm definitely not in this for the money :p Most of the products featured on the channel are my own things that I've bought for my own use, with the exception of the laptops which I've been sent to review for a few weeks and then send back afterwards. The only products sent to me that I've been able to keep so far were two of the Noctua coolers that I used in my recent cooling Threadripper video.
hey bro. how you doing? i have just brought the audioengine a5+ and they happened to distort on bass when cranked up. so i was wondering when you attach the sub to the speakers does all the bass get transferred to the sub woofer or do the speaker still produce their bass. good video bro
Was actually looking at this thanks for the simple and strait forward review.
Thanks!

I don't have any way of measuring it, so can't say other than anything anecdotal.
@@JarrodsTech You don't need to measure anything just listen to it, 50hz sounds vastly better than any other setting

@@jigri_pokhri Does the S8 substantially improvre the sound of the A5'S? I actually am not impressed with my A5S
The hole is a port which tunes the frequency response of the sub.
Is it active sub? does it start automatically on low volume? I'm looking for something that u can plug into my PC, Subwoofer output.
I'm not sure what you mean by automatic sorry.

@@ryanm2084 And does it?
@@ryanm2084 still don't understand the question. The Sub has a volume knob that limits the volume.

Picked one up at goodwill for $10. Now I can't figure out how to connect it to my TV which only has optical and hdmi. Any ideas?
does it suffer from the "bad ground" humming noise that many other subwoofers do?
I haven't noticed anything like that myself.
ground hum usually comes from whether the sub and speakers are connected to the same outlet or not.
uh this might sound dumb but do i need to turn off the S8 with the switch at the back everytime? or does it have some sort of sleep mode ?
I think it has a sleep mode.
Does this make a substantial difference to A5'S pretty disappointed with my A5's so far

How did you do to connect the subwoofer to the speakers? Thanks for help me
The cables from the speakers go to the ports on the back at 1:14, there is probably a diagram in the manual that shows the layout.
@@JarrodsTech so i could connect any speakers; not only from the same brand isnt it?

Sub plays the low frequency. The A5's play full frequencies no matter how u setup. Need a high pass filter to stop A5's playing bass

Could be, as mentioned in the video I am by no means an audio pro haha
Thanks guys. It’s being delivered today. So excited! I’ll probably go ahead and break it in for several hours why not.
Adam Weisman. All I would I suggest is not play more than 60% volume for first few hours of play. Probably just bullshit but that's just me
I love the Subwoofer was very Stylish, but I am worry 8 inch bass not deep and enough for my bedroom about 100 feet
Hmm that is a pretty large room!
Looks like the new versions lost the RCAs out

From what I can see it has RCA in/out? In that case should work.
