  • When exploring an egyptian tomb, obviously the best stuff (alongside the mummy juice) is hidden in the sarcophagus, but it is surprisingly difficult to find a sarcophagus big enough to walk into. Apparently ancient egyptians were tiny people. So we had to build one, which you will be able to see in Anchorage Alaska soon!

      We made that sarcophagus large enough to be an ADA compliant secret door. If we just needed an ornate, opening one, I would just buy one of these ---> www.designtoscano.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=sarcophagus&button=search&authenticity_token=ijixUykQiEoH6cIHDxxMCBbSOfLtkIiLJmOs1qXgbk%2ByV6caaNtOxCd8d1ANQtXTcPThKUoRlE%2BRgp5iLjFKMQ%3D%3D

      He built it for the Alaska installation which we are currently...installing? The real question is whether it will fall out after we’re done!! Curious...

    Very nice. Like the stone finish. I was thinking how much I hate MDF, and then realized why. I'm almost always building things that either need to be lighter, or stronger, or more water proof, or are actual furniture (and the assemble it yourself furniture I get roped into helping assemble ...). But for what you are doing it's almost ideal so one needs to get outside ones box sometimes.
    I did build for a museum a case to hold long scrolls that were about 2 1/2 feet wide and the case was about seven eight feet? But it had to be light and really strong for the weight. Why? I can not remember. The legs were basically apple boxes on end that were filled (on installation) with enough weight that the thing was not moveable*. The main span though was built like an old model (balsa wood for you youngsters) airplane. Ribs and 1/2" surfacing. One person could carry it and once assembled I could stand in the center and it didn't sag. A real blast to create! It needed to be so stable because the tops were plexi vitrines and any flex and they would crack.
    * a trick they used because they couldn't attach anything to the floors and a lot of the place was carpeted was to use double stick tape and a bunch of weight. If the weight is enough that you can't lift it the tape will keep it from moving.

      We are gonna build some vitrines for the National Videogame Museum soon. You're calling me a youngster?!? Lol I'm about to turn 52. The double stick tape + weight trick is kinda brilliant.

      @@GratuitousSets Well I have a decade+ on you, but I was referring to people too young to remember that even the model sections of drug stores had a lot of balsa wood airplane kits. Haven't seen any for sale in years. About 20 years ago I bought a bunch when a craft store was dumping all they had left. A retirement project!

    Brilliant, yes we actually did make one of those egyptian 'cabinets' into a walkthrough. It is a squeeze on some people but does the job. Yours looks bigger, better and more attractive!

      Thank you so so much!!
      It’s definitely bigger, but also probably a lot heavier! Which is great for immersion but not so much for our collective spines lol

    • @GratuitousSets
      @GratuitousSets  Год назад

      The hands are from a mannequin. We made the head ourselves, but it's based on a full size bust of Tut we got from Design Toscano -pretty inexpensive 😊

    Love the craftsmanship, but not sold on this finished project. To critique: I think the flat body when the head portion is round just doesn't flow well. Proportionally it just seems off.

      Keep this on the DL, but Mark, the sculptor, was in Berlin when Matt built this. I, Mark, fixed the shoulders when I got back. It’s not perfect, but the client likes it. It looks pretty good on site, too. I hope the client doesn’t see your ingenerous, scathing critique....published here...shut up, Chad. Lol- smooches- more crappy work to come! I don’t disagree- you should just call me-you have my number!!
