    With Darling and Blackadder, there is a subtlety that you might miss due to how its buried in the British Class system.
    They are actually the most similar characters, in attitude and social standing and circumstance. They are mirrors of each other. They are both upper working class/lower middle class, highly intelligent and well educated, and vastly smarter than everyone around them. They are both not upper class enough to have avoided the bloodshed by fast tracking to high ranking officer positions. They are intellectually far superior to everyone around them, including those who out rank them. They are both VERY aware of the futility of the tactics and the reality of combat at that time, and how likely they are to die in the process, and they are both using their smarts in whatever way possible to remain alive and avoid , at all costs , having to "go over the top".
    Darling has managed to do very well and secure an admin position to the general which keeps him out of the firing line, and Blackadder, as the name suggests, slithers and squirms his way out of "the big push" in a multitude of ways, and they are both 100% aware of the others situation/motivation, and also the fact they mirror each other,. This is why they HATE each other so much, they reflect each others lie and know that the other one has worked them out and knows the others whole mode of being is avoidance of combat, and they are both worried the other will rumble them , which would also result in execution.
    Its a very nuanced dynamic and IMO makes Blackadder Goes Forth the jewel in the crown, as this season really is the story of Blackadder and Darling. Its very clever and amazing observation of British society (and wider human society as a whole)

      I like your analysis in general but can't agree that Blackadder and Darling are any part of the working class. They're definitely middle class by the standards of the day -- educated, professional and fairly financially comfortable but nothing like the upper class George and Melchett who were born into considerable generational wealth and have a nearly completely different culture. Remember that Blackadder was a regular officer before 1914, and hofficers from a working class background were rare. He has the hint of a grammar school boy about him -- clever and able to do work well to achieve objectives but having hit a glass ceiling of not being born into the "right" family.

    Historical context and terminology dump for those unaware:
    Hun = German soldier.
    Kaiser = German King/Emperor
    ‘Left’tenant = The British pronunciation of Lieutenant.
    Tommy = English/British Soldier
    Jock = Scottish soldier
    Savoy Grill = Extremely upper class restaurant opened in London 1903.
    Somme = Ugliest battle of WWI, lasted between June and November of 1916. British casualties were around 420,000, French casualties around 200,000 and German casualties around 440,000.
    Field Marshal = British equivalent to a five star general. Highest rank in the British Army.
    Field Marshal Douglas Haig = Commander if the British Army from 1917 to 1920 and oversaw the allied victory in WWI. His tactics were criticised at the time as extremely old fashioned. He didn’t adapt well to modern warfare tactics and as a result under his command over 2,000,000 British soldiers died pointlessly under orders to walk at the enemy slowly in formation.

    • @spearhafoc
      @spearhafoc 5 месяцев назад +2

      Field Marshal Haig was actually a decent commander and strategist. He helped develop the tactics that eventually led to victory.
      It has to be remembered that most of the history after the war was written by politicians like Lloyd George. Politicians that meddled with planning, starved the army of reinforcements and material. Isn't it strange that Generals of the French, German and Russian armies also had the same problems but it's only the British that pan Earl Haig.
      It was noticeable that at his state funeral over 200,000 veterans attended to pay their respects. You can't say that for the politicians.

    • @alexanderharris5022
      @alexanderharris5022 5 месяцев назад

      @@spearhafoc The soldiers may have respected him and he was certainly a strong leader but he was not loved nor respected much back in England. The sheer number of deaths resulted in many of the British public blaming his tactics and many politicians openly calling him a butcher.
      Modern historians also agree his tactics were extremely dated. He commanded battles the same way The British had during the Victorian and napoleonic era, WWI was a completely different war entirely and he didn’t adapt to newer inventions in war like tanks and machine guns fast enough.

    • @spearhafoc
      @spearhafoc 5 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, politicians blaming him to hide their own failures. And his tactics, like those of the French and German Generals, evolved throughout the war. Many modern historians do still base their attitudes on the sentiment of biased writers after the war. Many modern historians also take a more objective view based on later research and information now available.
      The 1st World War was like no other and all Generals of all nationalities struggled to come to terms with it.

    This is actually shown as a legitimate source in history in the UK now, as well as occasionally being shown as guidance or examinations when looking at wartime or war-themed literature for English Literature. This is because of all the Blackadder manifestations, this series is probably the closest to the truth of what really happened, from the necessity of sometimes needing to eat rats in the trenches when rations were low, to the outmoded tactics of many British generals at the time (personified by Melchett), to the use of actually using war artists to draw or paint the enemy (photography being something that existed since the Victoria era, but the notion of an actual "war photographer" being virtually unheard of). There's a scene (I forget exactly when) where, if you look carefully in the background, either George or Baldrick is delousing his bunk with a rather old-fashioned-looking contraption to avoid being eaten alive by parasites whilst sleeping. Even this detail is accurate.

    Born into the Army, and went on to serve myself. Have been on several WWI battlefield tours and it is remarkable that even now, some 110 years later, that there are preserved trenches, many sites where the trench lines are still visible; landmarks referenced in battle accounts, still easily found; the crater left by the Lochnagar mine, 100m wide; the tunnel systems at Vimy ridge, one of which is still open to visitors and I've been in.
    Then there's the 'iron harvest'. Ammunition, grenades, mortars, and all kinds of unexploded ordnance, regularly brought to the surface by farmers ploughing fields. They are left at the side of the road for collection by French and Belgian bomb disposal, who collect and dispose of what is found. The danger is still very real and there were two construction workers that were killed in 2014, when a WWI bomb functioned. Some even still contain mustard gas and have caused injuries.

    Stephen Fry is superb in this. He's actually relatively realistic in his portrayal of General's in the 1st World War, they were foolish and reckless with the lives of the soldiers that served under them. In fact, when this was made, veterans of the First World War wrote to Ben Elton (the writer) and praised him for the realistic (although comedic) portrayal of the ridiculous situations our allies faced. How the soldiers were sent "over the top" and were slaughtered in their hundreds and often thousands in a single day.

    When you get to the last episode in this series, please ensure you watch the video right to the end of the credits. It's very poignant and brings a tear to my eye every time

    You’ve skipped ‘Blackadder’s Christmas Carol’, which was a one-off episode between seasons three and four. I hope you react to it at some point. 🙂

      I'm absolutely certain that Robbie Coltrane's performance in Blackadder's Christmas Carol was what made JK Rowling demand that he played Hagrid in Harry Potter. His first appearances in both are virtually identical.

      Would have been great if Hagrid just waggled his fingers nonchelantly at Harry and called him a wizard

    I know it may be difficult with copyright? However virtual silence from the original and yourselves can be somewhat frustrating for many!

    The last/final episode was too near to the bone. It cut me up as our lads died by the thousands in wet mud trenches.
