Blackadder was brilliantly written and performed. What a cast! Thanks for showing this compilation Joel.
Mostly written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, who never seem to get enough credit.
@@Shoomer1988 I certainly know of Ben Elton but not of Richard Curtis
But I bet you've heard of the things he's written... Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary, Mr Bean, War Horse, Spitting Image, The Vicar of Dibley... the list goes on.
That was when the BBC, was worth watching. This days half the cast would be played by blacks
@marcellogenesi6390 what's the matter with you?
Blackadder was absolutely brilliant !!!!!
Great memories from watching this in the 80s on the bbc enjoyed your reaction thanks
This has made be want to go back and rewatch your Patreon reactions to Blackadder; you can never get too much Blackadder.
Black Adder Season 4 still holds up even though every season is hilarious.
Thanks for this. One of THE greatest sitcoms ever made and a stellar cast.
I wonder whatever happened to that nice Hugh Laurie. I hope he made it...
Behind all the humour was a lot of poignancy in the writing. The gulf between the pompous elites (Melchy) who sat miles behind enemy lines out of the way of the guns, and the ground soldiers (Blackers, Baldrick, George) who were just cannon fodder. That serious message rings true today in any conflict. There are always those called upon to sacrifice far more than others, who remain safe in their bunkers.
78 British Generals were killed during WW1. 40% were killed by artillery. It is a myth that British Generals sat the war out in Châteaux's. Of the armies on the Western Front the French and Germans mutinied. The British and Imperial armies never did.
The myth of lions led by donkeys was born from the 1960s. Haig was a hero to the men under his command.
You have to look at the French and Italian armies for Generals that didn't care for the lives of their men.
Being a General in the British army at that time was no guarantee of survival.
@@andrewellis1511 And casualty figures were highest amongst the 'junior' officers, as they lead from the front and were deliberately targeted.
BTW you don't actually need to add an 's' to chateaux. That is the plural of chateau!
Personally I think the 3rd series was the best. Some of the looks Blackadder gave the prince, and how he threatened Baldric with a pencil were hilarious. Highly recommended.
Completely agree! Personal favourite is the episode with Dr Johnson and the dictionary.
Fantastic cast especially Sir Tony Robinson
Blackadder at its best!!! Stephen Fry was outstanding as Melchett. Thanks Joel, John in Canada
I recall seeing the last scene of this series, where they go over the top to almost certain death, when it first went out and feeling quite emotional. About 20 years later I read an article on how the series was made. Apparently the last scene looked very weak in the editing room until someone suggested they did it in slow motion.
If you haven’t already watched it, I suggest you watch Peter Jackson’s film, They Shall Not Grow Old, made to commemorate WW1, using colourised original film footage from the war.
Almost ? It cleary implied that they HAD, died.
I hope you've watched the episode in this series with the brilliant Rik Mayall as Lord Flashheart.
Hi Joel, you're right, this show is still so sharp and crisp. The sly sarcasm of Blackadder doesn't have any equal. The nearest challanger for me would be Lord Flasheart, not on the sarcasm scale but for the bonkers OTT delivery from the much missed Rick Mayal.
How about you share a re-watching of an episode with Stephan and Arturo, the one with Flasheart as the pilot/flying instructor? His discription on how to treat your aircraft was brilliant!
Blackadder was a brlliant show, personal favoutite would still be the Elizabthan series.
I'm so glad an American can actually appreciate British humour. I think a lot without humour gets lost in translation with many non brits. This show is absolutely awesom. You should watch the month python movies if you find BA funny
Hello Joel. Timely for remembrance.
I asked Ethan and Angela from the Midwest about the US WW1 Museum Kansas and they had been there.
The videos from there put emphasis on US Dough Boy numbers winning WW1.
Imperial War Museum emphasis is on how British had to learn about how to build and use a mass army for first time from its mistakes.
Some of most successful tactics were from Commonwealth countries, as I reckon your Australian fans elsewhere would point out. The combined arms tactics of the last 100 days, used by Haig, are seen as the thing that succeeded by IWM. They oppose "Lions led by donkeys" idea that this video mocks as something from 1960s, more to do with peace movement then.
Four Canadian divisions drove 47 German divisions into headlong retreat. Their new tactics ended trench warfare. They were the most successful force of the war.
@@michaeldowson6988 More videos from Canada required?
Haig did at least listen to the modern thinking Canadian and Australian generals and change both strategy and tactics. The British had learned the hard way in the previous war in South Africa too and were actually willing to change. They never had a huge army, so at first followed what the French did. US WW1 Museum video suggested French tactics and US numbers were the deciding factor. In this video doing the same thing again is the joke, so it makes no sense.
The New World countries did play a vital role, but the right ones should get more credit, as per your reply.
Australians & Canadians were a decisive factor in the 2nd Boer War.
A Canadian regiment is the only one of the Empire with the right to wear the Royal Cypher of Empress Victoria, in perpetuity, for ending the Battle of Paardeberg..@@alansmithee8831
Thanks for showing this Joel. I need to go back and watch this all again. Love Blackadder
Good afternoon, Theresa. Thank you for your kind words. I chose the second card, and it is right for my current situation. On Thursday, I found out that my toe was not healing as I thought it was. Unfortunately, this time of year is busy for me with Remembrance Sunday coming up, and I was due to attend a 4 day course in London for the Veteran charity that I do voluntary work for. However, that has been put back, but I am still hoping that next week they will allow me to wear shoes again so that I can attend the Remembrance Sunday event.
Comedy poking fun at a tragedy. This is hilarious, while being sad at the sane time. An excellent series.
3:15 "has anyone here visited a planet called earth"?
Joel, I don't know if you are aware but most of the cast members were academic high achievers. Rowan Atkinson is a case in point. From memory he is an electrical and electronics engineer.
You really, really need to watch Jeves and Wooster, sadly without Tony Robbins and Rowan Atkinson, but it retouches on the closeness and the comical chemistry they honed to perfection doing their old skit-based show together.
ive watched i hundreds of times and its stillvery funny
Was in the fillming TV audience for the one about flying. 4 hours to tape, all the comidines except Roland made jokes just for us when not fillmimg. Rolland no too seriously concentrated on set. Nice reaction tape.
Hi Joel, if you miss the show then watch it again in your own time! Maybe with your friends!
I freaking love Blackadder
The opening marching scene was filmed on my old housing site. The old cavalry barracks in Colchester, Essex 🇬🇧
"Are these real raisins in this plum duff?" "Oh, I'm sure it will be alright when the creme custard arrives" - very funny show.
this series is so deep in british peoples soul.
Have you seen the Christmas special, based on Dickens? Recommended, esp at this time of the year!
Thanks for another great video, Joel. Hope that you're all doing well.
Self Deprecation is in fact a gift ,,, it has the ability to stonewall you from anything someone tries to use as an insult. ✌✌✌❤
Blackadder 2 Fabulous!!!!!!
Blackadder is brilliant. That is all.
The Melchett character is a parody of Britains Head of the Army in WW1--Field marshall Sir Douglas Haigh ( of Whiskey fame and fortune) After his retirement, in 1924, he wrote his Biography, which of course covered his time in the war. Quote--The invention of the Tank, and Aeroplane , were excellent additions to our success BUT, they'll never replace the Man on a Horse. Now you see why and where the parody comes in.
To be fair, at the time they could not, especially as Haigh was a proponent of mobile warfare. Trucks and Carriers are really what made the horse redundant.
One of my most favorite Blackadder quotes is "The path of my life is paved with cowpats from Satan's own herd.." Giggle!
Stephen fry and hugh laurie were a comedy duo many years ago(their show was called 'a bit of fry and laurie)
Reccomend reacting to the inbetweeners classic British show
Captain Darling was a riot 😂😂😂
His favourite word is ‘quintessential’
Their tortoise Alan 😅
The last scene of the last episode should be compulsory viewing
Yes, that final episode took the nation by storm and created quite an impact on the psyche of the viewers. Can't say anything more without giving away any spoilers.
I drove over the Blackadder Water, near Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders, only recently; maybe the name inspired the Blackadder series?
Have you tried the series called bottom stars Rick Mayall who appears as lord flash heart in s4 e4 of Blackadder?
'The German Guns'.(War poem by Sodoph Baldrick)
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
Boom, boom, boom.
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
Boom, boom, boom.
I keenly encourage watching the Blackadder special "Back and Forth." Made to celebrate the new millennium. Hilariously brilliant.
Its ok best one only fools and horses, most loved comedy , look it up we have to pay for it ,full episodes , that we watched in 80s and 90s , 5he bloe up dolls kilked me me in laughter from a sex shop , i realky pissed myself from laughing , so crazy .best comedy everXx
I i mean blow up dolls , from sex shop , so funny ,heating comes on , i pissed my pants laugh so much , i had to change my bottoms , skirt or pants 😂😂😂😂😂
Hows about trying sum really old ones ? Try Pete + Dudley Moore - or Kenny Everett - was brilliant- two Ronnies ( full show ) + loads of other 60/70 s Brit shows that we’re possibly the best era of comedy ???👍🇬🇧.
Have you watched The IT Crowed?
“BAAAAH”
Brilliant show but so close to the truth that it is painful. In my childhood I met survivors of that senseless bloodbath. Horrible. Makes one sorry for Russian youth currently being subject to the same cruel dynamic in Ukraine
Brilliant!
It may be of interest to know that the final episode of 'Blackadder Goes Forth' is sometimes used in British secondary schools as part of the History syllabus covering the First World War.
We watched it in English literature classes when doing war poetry (strangely enough she didn't show Baldrick's Boom Boom Boom poem
The show was different gravy joel.
Have you seen ‘Bottom’ yet, it’s hilarious as well
Can’t get enough of ole Slackbladder.
Can you react to English football fans (sunderland) singing wise men say?
I was always a great Blackadder fan, but when this series aired I couldn't help feeling uncomfortable throughout, as the real history was so terrible that it seemed disresectful to give it the Blackadder treatment.....until the final scene. Somehow the tragedy in that one scene just made the rest just fall into place.
Although Blackadder Goes Forth is very poignant, we have to remember that it is satire and satire based on a blinkered view of General officers.
In reality, at least 78 British Generals were killed in World War 1 and 146 wounded. They didn't spend all of their time drinking wine in chateaux. They visited the lines regularly, even the front line trenches, in order to gain intelligence of the state affairs and morale purposes. They were exposed to the same artillery and sniper fire as the enlisted men.
74% of General officers survived the war. 85% of the other ranks survived.
😂😂
You do know that his name is actually Captain Daring, right? That's the joke
Black Adder the first was the best
