I have the NX5R - and was afraid to touch it. Absolutely stupendous - was able to download and save the current configuration. Running Windows 10 - communicating with a cheap mio midi/usb cable. Had to set it up as default and reopen seemed to do the trick. This is a game changer. Thank you thank you
Cheers JayB - I had an old X5 that I sold and bought the X5DR module. Your soundset is permanently on the device but I've started making patches too. This is a very useful video as we all know how... "fun" the interfaces are on these devices!
Most of my sounds we programmed on the X5D itself, without the editor. But the X5DR's buttons are so tiny and it lacks a value slider it's no fun to edit sounds there.
Hi! Great video! I am now in the process of setting up my x5d. I've a question. Is there any info on the Internet regarding the size of korg x5d data chunks? I mean, if cheap MIDI adapters/interfaces don't work because their capacity is too low, what is the actual size of x5d data messages? I've looked through x5d specs but there is no info on that. Also, I do not see this info in MIDI interfaces specs. Yes, I saw your recommendations in this video on MIDI interfaces. However, I'd like to know whether a MIDI interface will do the job just by looking at its capacity in terms of MIDI data chunk size. I thought you might know where to look for than info. (Googling doesn't help.)
It worked when Mac was still compatible to 32-bit software. However, something otya fixed for me a few years ago as Midi In for 16-bit wine. And this was never implemented in official Wine, so whenever you wanted to establish a bi-directional connection the editor brought up an error (Not enough memory).
@@JayBmusic Thanks, I have been running into the same error. Maybe I need to check out the new Wine 8, as this seems to be able to run 32 bit software on 64 bit macOS. Do you know if otya raised a PR to the official Wine to integrate his fix?
@@diggs235 Check out the thread on this here: github.com/otya128/winevdm/issues/545 If you're willing to compile it yourself you could add the files to your source code. :D

Hi Jay, I have been trying to communicate sysex with my N5ex but no luck so far. I tried the above program, but got a "midi communication error" with my Mio usb to MIDI i/O plugs. This works fine for my old D50, but not for the N5ex ?
Hi JayB, thanks for this video. I have an X5 that lost all memory after the battery died. Any tip on how I can reload all factory patches and settings? Would the X5 editor do that?
Hi JayB! First of all, thank you very much for your ongoing support for the (in my case) Korg X5DR! I downloaded the KorgEditors-WINEVDM.exe software from your website and installed it on my W11 system, but when I start any of the 3 installed programs, the following message appears: "The code execution cannot proceed because VCRuntime140.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.". After some Googling I installed 'Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022' for x64 systems. After restart, I still get the same error message. When I look for the file 'VCRUNTIME140.dll' it appears several times on my system, but none of the three editors will work so far, giving the same error message over and over again. Perhaps you know why this happens or what to do to get it working? Hopefully you van help me out or point me in the right direction. 🙂 Thx in advance! 😀👍
You can restore those at any point within the unit itself. Can't remember the page number in the global menu but I think it was 05A or something where you can load Pre-A sounds.
Awesome information! Question: your ns5r supports aftertouch? i just got mine and couldn't find it anywhere, i have a x5r/w wich does have aftertouch my midi controller has aftertouch but for some reason it doesn't transmit AT to my ns5r
It should support after touch as it's an essential function of XG and GS too. However it's not part of the sound itself but rather of the multi setup where you can assign all sorts of controllers to all sorts of targets individually per channel.
Hi, would you recommend if I do the PCIF (host to PC) method on connecting my Korg X5D to my PC instead of using an interface?(i dont have a budget for an interface right now)
To my knowledge there's no driver for the PCIF interface for modern windows systems. Unless you go for the Arduino solution I presented in another video. But if the costs really match up... You can get simple good midi interfaces for less than 30€ here.
I like when creative people use some "programmer" stuff to solve such problems. I saw that you were using a Hackintosh, not using a real Mac to make music. This is impressive! I also listen to your music while programming and to be honest, while serving in the country of the aggressor (conscription, blah-blah-blah), I still listen to previously downloaded MP3 files from my button telephone (like old Nokia)
Yeah, I set up a Hackintosh after my MacBook Pro's GPU died again and I wanted a more reliable PC. Also, I got tmit for free from work and despite being 10 years old it still works like a charm. Ironically, the footage here in the video was recorded on my meanwhile repaired MacBook Pro. :D

With the editor there's a "transmit as" option that lets you decide on which number the patch is going to have.

its possible load sound library from X5DR into N5ex??
