    QY 100 is a forgotten MIDI device - I will never sell mine. I'm going to come back to playing when I buy an Aturia Keytep 37 keyboard. I also have a Yamaha DJXII but it's too big to play with QY. Good job - I think fans of this equipment will come back to having fun thanks to you.

    JayB, i follow you since years because you are one of the less dudes who managed it to make radio like sounds and music on hardware, i know a lot of dudes who say this and that sound isn't possible on hardware, you show us on every track, if you are able to make good sounds, you can do very good music and sounds with one device. This was the same reason for my to make sounds on hardware because people were able to do that. Thumbs up for every track you have done so far. I personally like to do tracks only with one hardware device, i like that because you learn a lot.

      Hell, I've seen people making cheap 90s keyboard synths from regular market sound glorious!

    hi JayB ~ I've watched a few of your super videos using the Yamaha QY100 lately and just noticed you've given sound advice to people on Yamaha music forums.. Wondering aloud if you might be able to help me too?
    I used to use the formidable Yamaha SY85 for creating ~ Too hefty to carry around.. So.. ~
    ~ I bought a Novation Launchkey Mk3 (49 keys) and also a very decent condition Yamaha QY100 ~
    Q: How easy (or not!) is it to use the Novation as the midi controller for the QY100?
    ~ For both recording into a DAW and also for live work..
    Has anyone created 'scripts' or.. possibly even set up a 'Novation components' thing for the fantastic QY100?
    Bear in mind my synapses collapse as soon as I hear terms like cc, sysex, midi implementation.. Speak to me as you might do a labrador dog..🤣🤪(and thanking you in advance for any and all advice you can give!)

    I recently found an interesting way to utilise good old XGWorks (3.0) when working with a most modern Mac and Logic Pro 11. I used a Parallels virtual machine with Windows 11 (64 bit) and installed the old XWorks 3.0 there. Yes, this worked all inside a single Mac!!!
    Then I connected an USB MIDI interface additionally exclusively to this virtual machine. My main USB MIDI (CME) on the Mac is able to route any MIDI inputs to a single MIDI output on the Mac. This way I was able to sequence the track via Logic Pro and simultaneously edit the voices with the good old XGWorks.
    This is an example, how to utilise this ancient hardware in a modern sequencer setup today.
    Thanks, for all your inspiration, JayB! ❤

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  2 месяца назад

      Or you just use plain old Wine and run it without all the virtualization. Much quicker, much easier. I just use MIDI Pipe to proxy and "clean up" the wine MIDI.

      Like I've written in the description the QY70 doesn't support pitch envelopes so the kick will sound much lower. Same for the S-YXG50. I don't know how well the SW cards will support it.
      Also, make sure you use the XG Gen 1 version on my website. ;)

    • @jaxdigitalaudio
      @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

      @@JayBmusic Yes, I am interested in that comparison too! The SW60XG seems to have the same tone geneartion chips as an DB50XG (daughter board). But the SW1000XG has the tone generation of an MU100. The QY100 should be beyond the SW1000Xg in chip version.

    • @jaxdigitalaudio
      @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

      @@JayBmusic I think the QY100 is comparable with the MU50 but I am not quite sure.

    • @JayBmusic

      Voice list wise it's comparable to the MU90. But no EQ or individual insert effects. It's a weird mixture.

    @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

    I really have difficulties to hear any differences with the QY70. I will upload the video in the next mimutes, The video is rendering. Sequenced with Logic Pro, double screen cast. Although used the special (edited) MIDI for the QY70.

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  2 месяца назад

      SW1000XG and QY70 will probably sound the same. And it seems like the SW also doesn't support pitch envelopes. Currently listening to your recording. You could have tried the Gen 1 version. That's optimized for the QY70 (which I have here too).

    • @jaxdigitalaudio
      @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

      @@JayBmusic The QY70 video is using the optimized MIDI file. The SW1000XG is using the original file. The SW1000XG has 20 MB ROM and actually should support pitch envelopers as it has the MU100 chips with 2 independent 32 voice synths, which at this time was the flagship, but I am not sure. I will read the implementation chart for the SW1000XG/MU100 now.

    • @jaxdigitalaudio
      @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

      @@JayBmusic Hm, the SW1000XG does support a pitch envelope at normal voice level and an envelope generator at drum map level. possibly the NRPNs or the SysEx for this are slightly different. I still have to look at the QY100 documentation and the release dates.

    • @jaxdigitalaudio
      @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

      I compared the MIDI Implementation tables for QY100 and SW1000XG. Both seem to be identical. Multi part has pitch envelope, drum part has not. There is also a written hint in both documentations, that the pitch envelope has no effect on drum parts.
      However, Yamaha XG devices are well known for having hidden features (like the QS300 feature on my SW60XG, which really works there but not on the others.)

    • @jaxdigitalaudio
      @jaxdigitalaudio 2 месяца назад

      @@JayBmusic The QY70 is definitively not comparable with the MU100 as often claimed or the SW1000XG. Because alone the count of sounds is more than the double amount on the latter two. The SW1000 and the MU100 have 20 MB ROM, the QY70 merely 4, I think. I can clearly hear a difference in sound allover. However, I can barely hear any difference in sound between SW1000 and MU100R. Unfortunately I do not have a QY100 (yet). This came out between 1998 and 2000. So it also could have 20 MB ROM, but not sure. It also can be used as external effect processor, like the MU100/SW1000XG. SW and MU also take stereo input as an audio source and process any of the included system and insertion effects. These also support PLG-100 hardware boards for synthesis expansions like DX or VH or Yamahas VL and others.

    You and YT user Scoth (QY70 Wizard) should get together and make an album. Scoth has released a QY70 Album 'Mr. Scoth - One' on bandcamp. Amazing sounds from these XG devices. Yamaha - you should release a VST with all the XG Wavetables from these instruments.

    Is QY100 like a miniature version of QS300? I don't know QY100 at all, but i do have a QS300, and i absolutely love it's GUI and sequencer. It's much more tidy, intuitive and much easier to navigate than Roland's menu labyrinths from that era. ESPECIALLY when compared to something like MC505. What i truly miss on QS300 is the ability save songs in the internal memory. I had to buy an external USB floppy to deal with that. In 2019. Which was a bit funny, because a 10 pack of 3.5'' floppies actually cost more than the floppy drive...

    • @jaxdigitalaudio

      QS300 is different thing. QY series rather use the tone generator chips from the YAMAHA MU /SW series (all XG sample sets of different ROM sizes).

    Hi Jay,
    here is how it sounds (and looks) on an ancient Windows XP computer with the SW1000XG PCI card and XGWorks 3. The video is online on my channel (ruclips.net/video/eLXA5aw8iSc/видео.html). It was screen casted and recorded directly with a Mac (Apple Silicon M3) via MS Remote Desktop.
    I still will try the QY70 and maybe the Yamaha SW60XG later too.
    All the XG generations seem to sound slightly different. Seemingly Yamaha has changed sample sets and made adjustments with each new generation of XG tone generators. But compatibility is still there and it sounds good.)
