Keep doing your thing Alex . . . I appreciate your takes, and still believe that there is plenty of middle ground for everyone. I will say, I've learned a lot more about modern and its market trends from your videos. Still not my area of interest or expertise, but it's always good to broaden my perspectives.
I just find it strange that there's this apparent debate between "vintage vs modern". The fact is, there's value in BOTH and Pokemon's fate is tied in both the vintage and the modern. Without the success of modern, the vintage cards would fade into obscurity. If vintage goes to zero, then people would find no value in modern as they'd think it would have the same fate. Collect what you like, simple.
Great Video! I have young kids and they love pokemon, along with their friends. They love modern but they also love seeing my vintage cards and I’m always surprised when they know about the classic cards. Gives me hope!
It is very hard to make general blanket statements, but then if you call any one person out to address a specific situation, it can be perceived as a personal attack. I too have had a lot of luck in this hobby. Pretty much all my eggs are in Pokemon so hopefully it keeps paying off in the longrun or I will have to get a job
Perhaps some luck, but don’t discredit the amount of work you’ve invested into Pokémon. If anyone has earned their success it’s you. Happy Easter Rusty! Hope you and the family have a great weekend!
Your line of thinking and the information you give towards the latter pat of the video is important to apply to life not just this hobby. Very intelligent and well spoken on the matter, seem like you have a level head and I appreciate that you are giving honest advice for people that may be young out there to not just blindly follow influencers/the big channels. Great video man
Thank you for the kind words! I'm a teacher by profession, and one truth you learn early in this career is that learning happens in the mind of the learner, not the words/actions of the teacher. No one is ever done learning in life (teachers included), but we have to embrace the pursuit of processing, assimilating, and evaluating information for ourselves.
Pokemon and many collectibles are similar to stocks. Newer products are growth where we buy it withbthe hope they grow in price. Great video as always. It's no surprise that this hobby often has heated debates when you combine emotions/nostalgia and money. I feel like that is timeless advice that doesn't get said enough, that hearing differing opinions is how we grow and learn.
Thanks for the content. In order to keep this going is to keep the interest of the hobby interesting. You need to play a game to understand and appreciate the hobby as well, in my opinion. Yeah and it should be collect what you like dispite the value. thats what will keep it interesting.
Thank you for this timely, informative, reaction, video. Modern, vintage, or the middle: it’s always about the basics and collecting what we enjoy. Your Fundamentals are KEY! slide is one of my favorite tools. An excellent reminder for investors that all those graded promo cards from ETBs are fun, yet not scarce. Look at all the new rookie cards being released in modern, the chase cards that are truly rare, and the new packs like holiday sets with a guaranteed holo or better. It’s a good time to buy, collect, enjoy, play, and invest. Lechonk is hilarious. The Pokémon company’s mix of new with older fan favorites is fantastic. Who knows? In 20 years, Lechonk may be the classic chase card. ;)
Thumbs up for this video. You definitely bring up some very valid points. As to the “Modern vs Vintage” as far as an investment, I feel they will both increase in value, but there could be a greater growth percentage with Modern as opposed to buying vintage at current prices. I also agree with your life cycle of the investment chart and feel we are in a down cycle, especially towards the end of last year and beginning of this year. There has been some recent movement upwards so we maybe entering the steady growth period you have which usually follows a market crash.
Glass canons are never going to win every matchup. Also, at 6:30 is he saying the old stuff is getting phazed-out? If so, why does he have tons of nostalgia sitting on the shelf behind him? I think you're right, to say it's too one-dimensional a view. He seems to know that too, but has yet to realize...?
Comparing to stocks and all the variety- I personally look at vintage as more of an established company with consistent demand and consistent earnings. I look at modern as more of a speculative play, like a new technology type look. Modern has the potential for larger booms and busts, and some of it may fail completely, but that doesn’t discredit it from being a fun, enjoyable, and potentially profitable thing to collect. I also believe like with stocks, as people mature they will expand and enjoy more consistent “boring” and historic cards, as they explore the hobby and want to expand- not having all their eggs in one basket. Like many people commented, I believe a combination of both is a great idea, and a very fun way to collect as well.
Kudos to you for admitting you were one of the beneficiaries. When the topic came up I quickly said yea you were, right after you admitted it. Thank you for being transparent.
Thanks! I’ve been very fortunate to build the collection that I have and have certainly benefitted more from timing and luck than most people have or are willing to admit. In my mind, being grateful requires being honest about our opportunities and advantages.
Great video that really sums up the collecting hobby. I try to invest in Pokémon cards like stocks because I understand the card market much better than the stock market but most people I tell this to think it’s dumb. Glad to hear someone else make the comparison though.
I'd rather invest in modern than vintage. If you didn't get into vintage a few years ago before prices went banana's its probably best to stay out. Vintage is manipulated and vastly overvalued on the high end and will be more volatile than modern leaving you with some big losses when the bubble bursts and prices readjust.
Totally agree, the bubble has passed and gone. Also I have a suspicion about all these base set booster boxes popping up in the wild after it’s been 20 years in perfect condition. They just keep appearing. I just hope for the sake of my collection and Pokémon overall that there isn’t some future scandal that comes out that the Pokémon company was secretly reprinting these but it’s very suspect in my opinion
I never had great pokemon cards as a kid... pulled Zapdos holo from base set once and the rest is hard to remember... so I've actually found myself going after cards I never even had as a kid and after some years started becoming more interested in collecting rarer cards in general like shining mewtwo and reverse legendary collection holos... because these cards are less seen than say base set or jungle... the scarcity and higher prices to obtain these cards in Mint 9 or Gem Mint 10 has made these cards feel more like treasure! I do believe kids in the future like me when they grow up.. will desire these vintage cards that they never even had seen except on someone's YT channel. RUclips has actually showcased these vintage cards too so many kids they might have picked their favorite shiny or E-series cards picked out in their mind.. when time comes they might have to have it!
Great video again my friend......My opinion is there are to many grumpy old men that just like to moan about anything modern and will always say it's doomed even though that's total BS....just enjoy the hobby enjoy being here and appreciate it for what it is.
The bias with history is that "history" with Pokemon corresponds, at the moment, to your childhood. In other terms, as the Pokemon phenomenon is relatively young (25 years), history = nostalgia and most of the current adults want WOTC. I think that the nostalgia factor is the most important with collecting. Adults with an income want to buy the items they couldn't afford when they were kids. The "history" factor, in general, involves a niche of collectors. See, for example, movie posters collecting: most of the adults, now, collect posters from the 1970s... the movies that impressed them when they were young. Only some of them, a niche, is interested in the cinema history and look for older posters (silent films, WWII propaganda). In this case, history nostalgia, because cinema is 120+ yo and no kid is surviving from the nickelodeons era. Who, nowadays, wants antique watches, or 1930s cars? A niche. The adults with an income in the year 2040 will be the ones which now, as kids, want to pull the SWSH alt arts, or Miraidon and Koraidon 😁. Only some of them, a niche, will be interested in the history of Pokemon and will look for base set.
Great take. I collect vintage and modern and I will say I've been focusing my attention on getting those alt arts / grading as many as I can to potentially be 10s. Making profit on these is simply easier at the moment. But I also see an opportunity in buying vintage cards I once thought were too expensive and have cooled off. Alt arts one day will probably cool down so having discipline and being patient is important not to feed into the hype and buy things overpriced in the current market. Although ironically it is easiest to make money on things that are 'in' and hyped. I personally like vintage arts more overall (e-readers, WOTC, ex) so this might be a good time to shift back to vintage finally pick those up now that demand is less competitive.
Excellent take! Patience and adaptability are two great takeaways here. I think the vintage consolidation phase may be upon us before supply and demand stabilize and prices start gradually increasing again over time. Hopefully, less volatility in the near future.
My guess is if values and interest drops a lot then vintage Pokémon will do better compared to modern cards. If all Pokémon’s rise then the modern cards would probably outperform a bit
The real secret to investing is to be ahead of the curve A small percentage of people can predict the market based off taste alone. If u miss a boat, don’t worry; another boat is always on its way It takes practice, just don’t overpay and fall into worn out trends
Buy bulk and nickel and dime it out and scale it up to start having enough extra cash to buy something else. I buy smaller and older sets and focus on under $250 to complete. Those are my long term singles investments (aka my collection). Then I buy championship decks. 2 complete sets sealed and 2 sets are opened and each deck gets a binder. The sealed decks “should” be a good 5-10 year return of 4-6x. The binders can easily be a good 2-3 year return of 2-3x. Don’t target the trends target the tcg players.
I'm impartial on tcg cards, coz I treated them as equal regardless of their value. The importance is how you enjoy collecting pokemon cards.❤ I love your views about the debate coz I'm pretty tired hearing about disparity between vintage vs modern, and it will widen the wedge between. +1 Sub 👍
alot of info on this one 👍 but gotta agree with that guy lol 😆 thier is definitely a big echo chamber the majority of popular poketubers engage in each other's channel and back/support each other like a team . pokerev, pokeballermike, oltymepoke, dpm, serg, max vmax, and sooo much more all these channels go on each other's channel boosting each other opinions and if you piss one off the collective join . people won't be direct always indirect but it's the same note being played . of course it's not the the majority of tubers that do this those are the ones I've seen before on channels .😆
Love your breakdown. I agree with all your points here. I do love modern and Vintage and everything in between. I’m TCG player first and everything is after. Love the history
I wonder if today's cards and sealed product will sky rocket when the kids today are in their 30s and want to open the packs and boxes of their childhood.
As always, think for yourself. You can watch all the content you want but you cannot blindly follow someone's opinion, that's never a good idea. As many videos as I've seen about making money with Pokémon, nothing worked for me until I started experimenting, failing, making little to nothing again and again up to a point where I found a process I almost enjoy, takes me a couple of hours a week and gets me enough to buy most of the cards I want with €0 out of my pocket, can't ask for more. That knowledge, that know-how is definitely not something you can understand watching a few videos. Investing is the same for me, I followed the hype a couple of years ago and bought ETBs upon ETBs of Shining Fates, now I can literally buy them for 20% less, let alone profit lmao. When I was thinking for myself though "Damn, I really love this Dream League set, let me throw some money at it", 50 a box, now they're 350-400 where I live. Should have bought more lol. In the end, think for yourself, own up to your mistakes and learn from them. If you love this hobby, in the end, you will succed.
You would be a moron not to believe WOC won’t go up in further value 10-20-30 years from now pokemon is one of the highest selling medias in the world it’s like saying because I wasn’t here when Superman issue number one comic shouldn’t be as expensive as what it is today because I didn’t grow up with that era of Superman doesn’t make sense Disney, pokemon, dragon ball z, sailor moon, etc everybody wants the early pieces only way Pokémon would tank if a better franchise came along but even even then it would be second place not that bad honestly.
Simple. Go popular vintage, low pop and in high grade. Over time you will do just fine. As these collectors get older, they will want the original vintage cards of the top three.
I think Base Set vintage will tank In price as it’s getting boring, also I find it weird how all these base set boxes just keep popping up in the wild after 20 years ( a whole other conspiracy in itself 🤔) but other vintage will retain its value. Modern Alt Arts and Evolving skies is a great investment.
I think that's true in general, but I don't think they will tank in price. I think they've reached a point where they may increase in value more in line with typical growth of a set over time. However, I do find that there's exclusions to this. For example, Celebrations 2020, or for example the Legendary Collection reverse holos. Main point of view would be that they're unique, or are interpretations that are still underappreciated.
Modern is the New Classic for Kids nowadays. This is where they will pick up nostalgia from. So in my humble opinion, Modern is a better entry point than vintage. Plus, the price difference is so different that not all can afford vintage booster boxes or sealed products.
I think that Pokémon collecting/investing isn’t this black and white thing. Alex seems a bit jaded and his contempt for being kicked off of e4 or whatever just seethes through that video. No offense to him clearly I don’t know him, just seemed like he’s making it a bigger deal than it is. People collect everything and all eras of Pokémon are important. I don’t think people seriously think ONLY vintage or ONLY modern. Both co-exist.
At the end of the day, just collect what you like. I only buy cards that I like. If I don’t like the artwork, I won’t buy it, irrespective of if I could make money on it. That way, even if the card I have bought goes down, I still enjoy it.
That's my strategy too. I do like seeing my collection appreciate over time, but that's not why I bought it . . . I collect for the enjoyment and the experience. Perspective is always important.
Wow, this video randomly appeared in my fead & Im really surprised at the non biased insight you’ve provided. Deep pocketed collections(Whales), do not equate to a Genius investment strategy. For the most it was random investors using others money to buy buy buy or for others it was genuine interest in the hobby by consistently & slowly building a collection with a massive Steroid Shot of Lucky Hype due to things such as movie releases, game releases or a massive stimulus to the economy.
Alex is one of my favourite poketubers (along with yourself! Haha). He can be a bit on your face at times but he's straight to the point and he's (more often than not) right about what he's saying. But your point about doing your own research and digesting diverse perspectives is great advice for anyone starting to collect. Alex would agree too, I'm sure haha.
I think Alex likes being a contrarian, but I appreciate his takes, especially since I have limited experience with modern. It helps to hear from other perspectives.
@@pokemon_classics I understand your point but yeah, he's very knowledgeable with modern. Eli over at pokemart USA is very knowledgeable in modern too. I'd say modern is more dynamic in terms of its market adjustments etc, especially around newer sets when playing the reprint waves and trying anticipate new cards that mat become meta due to the standard rotation etc. Vintage is a more steady situation from what I can see (except for the pandemic and 2016). But I feel his point about the community in vintage is in part valid. However, there are poketubers who do modern too who get in bed with each other and try to push certain sets on people after taking positions up in that set. Not saying that Alex is one of them btw haha
@@benyoung4305 That's fair . . . I think most people generally stick to what they know best, especially when doing market analysis. Many of us in the vintage community have been collecting, selling, and corresponding with one another for over a decade. Many of those individuals also collect and sell modern, so I don't think it's conspiratorial. In fact, most of us never aspired to be RUclipsrs or businesses, just collectors making RUclips videos to share our collections and our advice to help out others in the community with similar goals. Modern isn't my passion, but I have nothing but love for all segments of the hobby and am happy to see others enjoy it and be successful with it.
@@pokemon_classics I understand what you're saying mate, and I agree. The only way yo keep the community alive and vibrant is for new people to keep enjoying collecting and playing and enjoying the hobby in our owns ways but also for us all to respect each other. There's room for us all in this hobby Thanks for sharing your insight with me mate.
Parents aren’t letting their kids watch nearly as much of these streamers as they seem to think. My kids love Pokémon because of Pokémon products, not because of someone else displaying Pokémon product.
NOW is the best time to be buying vintage PSA 10 whilst half the hobby is Hype Sucked into modern alt arts which are POP 6000's. FYI I collect vintage PSA and modern sealed
I think what is so confusing for me is that people seem, my perception at least, to think that Jake doesn't think modern is good? I think Jake has done a wonderful job seeing the nuances and his argument has been, at least to my knowledge, "what is the argument for something to be a good speculation/investment." I do think that he does accredit the value to both vintage and modern, but his biggest concern has been the argument people are using for their speculation/investment. I think that this is as clear as day, and something that he was speaking about in the boom. Jake even argues against overspending on vintage for the same reason, which is, "when the argument and mentality for doing so seems to 'not make sense'." Of course, this is my perception of Jakes words, which could be wrong and not at all what he meant. He then uses data presented in other hobbies to back up his argument (which I don't 100% agrees with, but then again, the numbers is a valid argument). I was vocal about this in the comments of the video as well. Somehow, I think people are very much keen on the end product and don't fully listen to his argument, and forget to understand the reasoning. Lastly, I also understood Jake to be equally as critical of vintage during the 2020/2021 boom when vintage was inflated. Of course, if I misunderstand Jake/anyone that follows his point of view, and they want to correct me, please do so. I would like to believe that I am open to such feedback.
I think you nailed it! I know Jake was mocked by many for being too bearish on the future of vintage during the peak of the boom, but he was right. His perspectives are always more complex and nuanced than simply saying which products or cards to buy, which I think sometimes turns people off to his argument. They want a short, simple answer. In our polarizing society, it's also not uncommon to oversimplify or misrepresent someone's position, which I think has been done to Jake on too many occasions. I have nothing but respect for Jake and find him to be one of the most balanced and thorough minds in the hobby.
I love Alex he has such a fresh take on the hobby ! He’s my boy ! People always block him because they are scared of his voice ! He’s amazing and super intelligent!
The dude that had clips in this video? First time I’ve ever seen him and I can tell you with 100% certainty he has absolutely no clue what he’s talking about. 😂
Fact I thought celebrations would be worthless now if u have the to 3 Pokémon in 10a u got some good money that I think will increase over time especially if u could hold until the next anniversary
The secret truth of Pokémon investing is that it's stupid to exclusively invest I'm pokemon cards. You collect the cards because you have an appreciation for the cards and if they gain value across 20 to 30 years then yay happy bonus. I personally love to see every single pokemon card go to $0 just to get rid of the hype beast investor douche bags out of the hobby. They are here for money only and they don't belong in the hobby.

I love your views about the debate coz I'm pretty tired hearing about disparity between vintage vs modern, and it will widen the wedge between.
+1 Sub 👍
alot of info on this one 👍 but gotta agree with that guy lol 😆 thier is definitely a big echo chamber the majority of popular poketubers engage in each other's channel and back/support each other like a team . pokerev, pokeballermike, oltymepoke, dpm, serg, max vmax, and sooo much more all these channels go on each other's channel boosting each other opinions and if you piss one off the collective join . people won't be direct always indirect but it's the same note being played . of course it's not the the majority of tubers that do this those are the ones I've seen before on channels .😆
8:50 is me literally buying raw and then send those graded
This iz a very fun and helpful vid for us collectors. Thanks heaps!
They keep popping up because there was A LOT printed. 😂
You totally approach this topic even handed. Great video
I actual like those debates in the hobby. When tubers bring on other tubers just to agree on each others points it gets really boring tbh
I embrace all Pokémon. The vintage Pokémon are beautiful they are the heart and soul of this wonderful hobby 👌
Can't have vintage card collections if people didn't collect modern cards when they came out.
Amazing content 👌 I'm a big fan
You speak really well. Great video
Modern is the New Classic for Kids nowadays. This is where they will pick up nostalgia from. So in my humble opinion, Modern is a better entry point than vintage. Plus, the price difference is so different that not all can afford vintage booster boxes or sealed products.
Your videos are the best.
Without modern there is no vintage.. without popularity there is no modern..
My guy, I appreciate your videos! What's your favorite pokemon?
Thanks so much! Alakazam is my personal favorite, but Nidoking and Arcanine are also up there for me.
Good video thanks for the info
Thanks, I hope it was at least somewhat helpful and coherent . . . it was less planned and more reaction than usual.
I am here for the drama and anger and got none of it. In fact I got respect and a well thought out opinion. 0/10
I'm sorry to disappoint you Ray . . . I'll try harder to incite emotional outrage next time! 😁
Great video
I love Alex he has such a fresh take on the hobby ! He’s my boy ! People always block him because they are scared of his voice ! He’s amazing and super intelligent!
The dude that had clips in this video? First time I’ve ever seen him and I can tell you with 100% certainty he has absolutely no clue what he’s talking about. 😂
🎉🎉🎉
Nomics the goat
Anyone else sometimes secretly wish the Pokémon market would crash so they could afford to buy cards they want 🤣
Yikes
As sad as it is, Charizards are the Bitcoin of Pokemon and will always hold and grow in value in any format (raw, graded)
Well at one point modern will become vintage an vintage will always be vintage
Fact I thought celebrations would be worthless now if u have the to 3 Pokémon in 10a u got some good money that I think will increase over time especially if u could hold until the next anniversary
This is not investing but speculation. Investmentbros are as sad a flat earthers
Modern cards will be more valuable than vintage.
fking fire video =)
The secret truth of Pokémon investing is that it's stupid to exclusively invest I'm pokemon cards. You collect the cards because you have an appreciation for the cards and if they gain value across 20 to 30 years then yay happy bonus. I personally love to see every single pokemon card go to $0 just to get rid of the hype beast investor douche bags out of the hobby. They are here for money only and they don't belong in the hobby.
Yikes.
Great video; solid content wise 🫸🫷
