This is a 1986 28 hp Johnson outboard. I'm no professional boat mechanic, but i get by with common sense and some know how and will power. Hope this video helps others.

Thanks dude for showing that the rubber pump goes on with the drift key slot down. Watched another video before I found this one and they didn't mention that. Had mine upside down so wasn't getting any water pumped lol.

I have a 1988 28spl set up the same as this. Your video is the only one I've found that shows how to do the impeller. All the other vids are of a different style 28spl. Thank you for the video.

@@getsomeoutdoors42 well actually, I've been fighting with that damn shift rod trying to get it to go back into the brass piece it came out of. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the delay. It's a tricky maneuver you got to close one eye hold your breath while standing on one foot. Naw im picking you just have to hold the rod from the foot with your fingers and guide it in might have to get some to watch the top link and maybe have them move it a little while you work the other end.

@@getsomeoutdoors42 thanks for the reply. I actually did get it eventually but only after I cussed a whole bunch of F words and threatened the motor that I would rip it off the transom and toss it over my neighbors fence. Took the boat out Saturday and it did great. Thanks again for the video, without it I woulda never figured that thing out. Even my Seloc book didn't shiw my motor.

@@seanwilson3945 yeah a few choice words and talking to the motor does help from time to time lol. I found a new language from working on my own stuff. Glad you got it fixed and back together.

Man I'm having a hell of a time getting the shifter linkage back together. The rods just don't wanna come together close enough. Any tips?

Thats awesome. Well done. Any idea if it'll be the same for a 92?

Just bought one of these..same year..any idea what the prop size is and the rpm range?

They came with a 9.2x12. My boat did 28mph with that prop. I splurged and bought a Michigan Wheel 12x12 to see what it would do. It holds the RPM down so much and the boat only does 24, if I'm lucky. I'll be going back to the stock prop. Not sure about RPM but I think 5800-6000.

What year did they make the 28 horse power boat motors.

They made them from the late 70's I believe well into the 90's. I have a 1991 model. Looks a little more modern but sounds JUST like this one when running. Also been the most reliable outboard I ever owned. She made 30 years on the back of my boat a few months ago, and NEVER once left me on the water and purrs like a kitten. Also pushes my fiberglass boat 28mph on the GPS. Little engine scoots. It's not ACTUALLY a 28. It's just a 30 without oil injection. It's actually a quick little engine because the lower unit has a smaller profile in the water.

Your comment about the impeller key direction is good but really, it will only go on one way. If you put the impeller upside down it just knocks the key out of the slot. You'll know real fast something is wrong. I also wonder why you took the spacer out. There is no need to. I changed the water pump in mine today and left the spacer, just took off the 4 bolts for the lower unit itself and then the one that goes THROUGH the spacer and attaches in the back. It's easier to stab back in, I feel. The spacer does nothing to assist you.
