My son and I were going to do this together, regretfully he passed away before we could do it. I would like to thank you for such a wonderfully detailed video. May the Lord bless you in all your ways.
I used to work on outboards for a living, but that was well over 20 yrs. ago. Now my neighbor inherited a boat from his late son and needs my help to get it running again. Thank you for refreshing my memory.
My memory kept refreshing afterwards. As I recall, most outboards sold as a single unit turned clock-wise as viewed from the top. Only one of a pair sold together would likely turn counter clock-wise. Much like twin inboards or I/O units would. It keeps the thrust and maneuverability in balance. JMO.
after paying 220 last season for a water pump replacement " first time boater " this video actually showed me what my mech was blocking every time i tried to snoop so i would not see how he did it ,very helpful video thank you so much, i plan to try it next replacement
Excellent video. Have changed several Johnson water pumps on various engines. Your explanation on the shift linkage is the best I have ever seen. Good Job!
I have watched many RUclips videos over the past several years and have to say that this fellow has real talent. A real gift for using just the right amount of words and description as he goes thru the process. I especially enjoyed the magical appearance of the cup of coffee. That moment actually made we hunger for a cup myself. I was disappointed in the comment about former President O'Bama and realized that this American probably voted for Trump. Isn't it amazing how we as people can enjoy things together like working on our engines and boats and yet have varied opinions when it comes to our politics. Surely that is what makes the world go round. Thanks for a well done and well thought out video!!
Getting ready to tackle an inherited motor to get me a little fishing boat going. Thanks for posting such a good video. They are straight forward and very informative!
Thank you for making this video. While I am mechanically inclined I have never done this before. Your video was very detailed and has definitely helped me feel much more confident about changing the pump. Thanks again! Ray
Mate , that was one of the best instructional videos I’ve seen on this topic , you answered all my questions without me even asking any Great job my friend👍 From your mate in Australia.
Thank you for your comment, my Friend. I've always wanted to go to Australia, but now that I've retired, I doubt that I will ever be able to afford it.
Thanks for this video! Replaced the water pump myself and motor runs fine. To make life easier, as a suggestion, when you are putting the impeller cap on the impeller, you can have a second person tie the impeller and then face the classes the right way and then slide the cap on. Works great!
Great video. Had the memory on that phone not run out it would be the best video on youtube for doing this project. Excellent detail with good footage. I have watched a bunch of these and this one is the clearest I have seen.
Hi Ralph, great instructional video. Your video will save me a lot of time and make the job so much easier. Only thing I might to different is replace the coffee with a beer. Thanks again.
Just wanted to say thank you for doing this video !!! You have no clue how much it’s appreciated ! Just done my 1990 60hp Johnson . Only difference was we have 2 bolts under the round plate on the bottom. Other then that you were spot on ! Thank you so much !
Thanks for posting this. We just bought our first boat and my ex-mechanic husband wants to know all he can about the motor. You provided him with a lot of good advice, etc. and the joke about the coffee and Obama was good, too!!
Great video. Easy to understand and had great tips. I feel more confident that I know what is going to happen. I like it that you did not rush this video and took the time to cover the subject in detail.
Great video . I love to access you/tube when I haven't worked on my old junk for a long time. Some videos are crappy made but not yours. You covered the whole job from start to finish magnificently and the camera work was very good. Now I will get to work on my old 73 outboard.Thank you for taking the time to do this.
@Ralph Pierre: Thank you so much for the instructional video. I am a retired Vet and I am a fairly new boater and fisherman. Taught myself at 53yrs old to fish by studying everything from utube to other fisherman. Your video and step by step instructions, i feel very confident that i can replace the impeller on my motor. Thank you so much. I will let you know how i did. Respectfully, Cassandra🙋
Thank you so much, Ralph! I appreciate the details like the key and directional chamfer on the inside of the impeller. Got the lower unit off and going to use your detailed advice to hopefully get me through the water pump service once the kit arrives. I left the shift rod on the upper power unit (my 97 Johnson 30 has a linkage disconnect behind the water intake screen) and I pulled the water pump copper tubing out with the lower unit, so hopefully I haven't funked it up and will be able to guide the top of that tubing back in! Best wishes. "I wish I had a fresh cup of coffee...there it is!"
Really good video, I have a 70hp and want to change the water pump as it no longer works after storage. I have undone all the gearbox and am so glad I watched this before messing about with the linkages, will put two bolts back in then follow your instructions to the letter. Top job!
Thank you so much for this Ralph! The way you walk through it is perfect. I have a 70 hp 1993 Johnson and I'm sure there are some differences, but I know it will be a great reference for me!!!! THANK YOU GREAT JOB!
For everyone trying to get the lower unit back on and cant get the shifting rod hole to line up w the pin i figured it out, adust the throttle either in forward or reverse till it lines up. Took me hours to figure that out
Great video, Ralph! Thank you so much for taking the time to create and share it. It has been very helpful and I use it as a reference and review each time I replace my impeller, now for the second time.
Great step by step video!! My boat has an 88 Evinrude 70 hp and ive been thinking of taking it to a boat shop. I will now order the water pump kit and replace it myself and save me some $$$ Thanks for the video
I plan on doing this in the next few days and this definitely helped me out in the way of confidence. I have done it before years ago but this was definitely the refresher i needed.
man that pin on the top is just about impossible to even see,i sure wish you were here in Utah, you could have all the coffee you wanted.anyway sir you really helped me a great deal, more so than any other video on water pumps.thanks Brent
Fantastic Video, well done !! was searching and reading up on how to drop my lower unit (1977 140 hp Johnson) to change the water pump and couldn't find anything with pictures let alone video ! So thank you So So much for taking the time to go through it all step by step and upload. Really appreciate your efforts.
Great video. I pressed the like button when you wished you had never heard the name Obama! Very informative and because you explained it so well I think I can do the job! Thank you from Watts Bar Lake in Ten Mile TN
Thank you very much for the video I'm an auto mechanic and I know many of the things to do to take things apart and put them back together, I appreciate the extra tips and thoughts to get through the Hairpin turns in a task, I thought it was very complete and very professional thanks again it's always best to go to the Wizard to get the wise....
Thank you for this video. I actually have the same engine on an old Tracker bass boat. I have worked on many outboard motors but have only done a few water pumps on smaller outboards. Mine is definitely in need of a new pump. You video was very informative and gave me the confidence to know I can do it myself.
Thanks for this video, this very good how to gives me the confidence to do this myself without screwing something up. Thanks and looking forward to more maintenance or how to vids...
thanks for the info, i have a 1990 70hp Johnson. had it along time and it looks great .i'm gonna start puttin my own pumps in for now on instead of gettin my buddy joe who's got his own boat service..i have a honda 40 a suzuki25 also to do so thanks with the johnson part
Good 'ol southern boy made watching this procedure relaxing. Love the re-insertion of the lower and water tube -- gotta git'er inserted just right -- kinda like dating. ;-)
Thanks a bunch for posting this. It was just what I was looking for and your instructions are easy to follow. Please continue to provide informative instructions I have subscribed to your page.
I done this procedure yesterday.that little keeper key is a fun one.mine fell off while removing the impeller.this was my first time doung this so was new to the game.i soon figured out that the keeper is very important.i did complete the job.but 🤔 whooo.it was finnikey.shes peeing great now.
Very big THANKS! I realy like your style. Your mech talking is realy pleasant. So..I do the same you explain on your instruction. And. It's run great again! Take my "Bonjour" from Quebec, Canada Mister Ralph!
Just bought myself a RIB with a Johnson 70hp motor, this video is fantastic, thank you for demonstrating how to do the impellor properly. And I hope you're smiling now, old purple lips has been replaced by a real man :)
You did a very good job of explaining how to change an impeller on a Johnson outboard. The only thing I would suggest is that instead of grease lubricating the actual impeller and because it is made of rubber, it might be better to use a 50 to 50 percent dish soap and water to lubricate the rubber impeller because the grease may react with the rubber.
My son and I were going to do this together, regretfully he passed away before we could do it. I would like to thank you for such a wonderfully detailed video. May the Lord bless you in all your ways.
Awesome video

Great Video. Straight to the point with out a bunch of unnecessary mumbo-jumbo. Just the right amount of detail to get the job done right. Thanks

Brother, if I was still young enough to have kids I'd name one of 'em after you. You saved me no end of aggravation!
That is by far one of the greatest compliments that I have ever had. Thank you for that.

I thank you for taking the time to show us the right way to remove and install the water pump. You made it clear step by step.
My husband really likes your video! It helped him so much that the manual didn't say! Keep them coming please!

Excellent video . I am a technician and could not do any better
Great video very helpful and you save me hundreds. cheers
Good video - i would suggest foregoing the gasket maker and substitute the grease on the o-rings with dish soap.
