I haven't noticed anyone else bring this up so far, but the overhead shot of the "sword guy" with his blood pooling out in the middle of the white rooftop looks EXACTLY like the Japanese flag. I still don't know to this day what Fujimoto was doing there. Because it's a PERFECT circle. It's definitely intentional.

    • @takanara7
      @takanara7 Год назад +5

@@RabidDogma I went back and checked the manga, but it's not a perfect circle there, just a generic 'blob' shape and it's cropped in one panel and more oval shaped in another. The overhead shot of Sawatari reviving katanaman is anime-only. The overall shot does look a LOT like the Japanese flag though in the Anime though, it's at like 18 minutes, 15 seconds into the episode, for anyone who wants to check.

Tbf Himeno already was clearly dying, she just tried to make her death mean something by giving her entire body to the Ghost devil which made it more powerful. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win, but we do know her sacrifice was at least able to keep the attackers preoccupied. Hopefully that ends up meaning something 🤷‍♀️ Himeno’s whole death scene was just so well done and honestly really sad. Massive props to Fujimoto

We don't have enough world building before this episode to really know who's capable of surviving which wounds.
Yes, Himeno was shot and she coughed blood, but we've been baited with a few gory "deaths" and blood as early as the 1st ep so the 1st time watcher is primed to suspend judgement on which deaths are final.
The only certain death "hints" that I've noticed so far after a few watches are the stylistic differences between Makima's and Himeno's deaths. Makima's death was too anticlimactic for a central character that still had so many loops to close and motivations to reveal, while Himeno's was beautifully done and prefaced with death flags (in past eps).
We know her arc could just end and land gracefully on ep 8 because she's just been fleshed out.

    Give me everything.
Since you talked about Aki needing a hammer to go with his nail:
The Curse Devil's sword has an inbuilt "hammer". If you rewatch all the nailpierces that Aki landed on the assailant then you can see that a giant demon finger always pops up behind the nailsword to "hammer" (i.e. flick) it into Aki's specified target at the time. Aki also always says "now", "fire" or "shoot" whenever he has the nailsword in position to hit the assailant.
A really cool detail regarding this is that in the Manga chapter for this fight the finger of the Curse Devil actually reached from outside the panels of the Manga into the panels where it flicks the nail for Aki. That was a very creative and meta way for Fujimoto to show how otherworldly this devil is to his readers. It's a shame that the Anime couldn't really replicate that - some people said that a real human finger coming from offscreen or something could have evoked a similar feeling but I feel like that would have been too meta and immersion breaking for a lot of watchers of the Anime.
Here is how it looked in the Manga if you want to see it for yourself:

Fun fact: Aki’s nail (sword) and Nobara’s nail (JJK) are both base on a Japanese cursing ritual, where the practitioner goes to a shrine in the middle of the night (1-3 am), and nails a straw doll representing the target to a sacred tree.
The ritual needs to be performed 7 days in a row, which is why there’s usually some kind of countdown.

Welcome to what people refer to as "Chainsaw Man pacing"...though it fits Fujimoto as an author more in general. If you haven't noticed,he doesn't like to stay in a spot for too long, and is always jumping from idea to idea without a care in the world. Which is why the attack on Public Safety works so well: it sneaks up on the characters just as much as it does for the viewers. The shock is palpable. In a recent interview,he said: "I understand why people get attached to their work, but if you spend all day staring at your own story, you're bound to lose that essential objectivity. I believe his primary motivation to be vengeance against Denji, blaming him for his grandfather's death, despite the whole business with the Zombie Devil. Additionally, remember that the grandfather in the first episode talked about how Public Safety gets in the way of Yakuza when it comes to devils. These two organizations were already at odds. The grandson gets revenge, the Yakuza get a thorn out of their side, and they get in the favor of the Gun Devil by delivering something it wants. That leads to her getting to know him better both becoming an influence on his life, helping build Aki's character to the audience, and falling in love with him as she sees him never lose his hummanity in the face of the same brutality she faces. That very love tragically leads to her giving her life to save him, her only consolation being that as long as he lives there will at least be someone who mourns her. This fight specifically sets a very good example for the malevolent nature of devil contracts, you could see the ghost give a tiny smirk when himeno offered herself for this fight because it fully knew this was a futile attempt and it kind of egged her on hoping to see her fail and to try to fuck her over.
And as the master said, she died because she acted too rationally, she got shook and she put up everything to try and protect the person she cares about.
Had she been more unhinged she could probably make it out of this situation alive.
But it's a good lesson to establish that just because you have a contract with a devil, doesn't mean they are your friend.

"Give me Everything" - There were so many back-and-forths in that battle. It seems like in something like one-piece you'd have like 5 episodes, one where Aki first fights "Katana-man" and wins, another where Aki fights him a second time after red-hoodie revives him and loses, then one where himeno uses ghost and starts to win, then one more episode where the snake shows up and finishes it. Instead it's, like, bang-bang-bang.

    “Give me Everything”
One of the things this episode conveys very well is the concept of death, and how Fujimoto implements it into his stories. We are made very clear early on in this show that Devil Hunting is a job that comes with great risk, and that death is a commonality, sort of like something that just naturally comes with the job. Fujimoto writes death in a different approach from other mangaka, in the sense that death is not only swift, but it can come in and out unexpectedly at any moment, it doesn’t need too much of a build up for it to happen.
This episode sets that standard for you, and I hope you guys are prepared for what’s to come. Love your content, have fun watching!

Himeno seemed like a significant character to the story, to the cast. The story gave her a path moving forward, a path of growth and fulfillment, but then she dies. It's a reminder to what type of story this is and how it depicts a sense of realism not only with how character act but also the setting and fatality of guns. Himeno's death reminds us no matter how significant people might be in our lives. To the grand scheme of things, our lives are all insignificant and can be taken away just like that.

On the other hand, it's a double edged sword. Because if you kill characters too quickly or just as they start to develop too constantly, eventually the audience start getting less connected with the characters because they just know they'll die relatively soon. Plus you risk going to the end of the story without characters for the audience to care about because all the others died.

The chapter where Aki explodes with blood after being cut by the katana just so happened to debut in the same issue of Jump as the Jujutsu Kaisen chapter where Yuji and Nobara both do a black flash. The interesting part of that is that both of those shots have similar composition, because they both are inspired by the same mangaka, Hiroaki Samura, who was known for panels showing people bursting with blood.

Regarding why the fox is generally friendly to people. I think it's because in Japan, fox is generally seen as god or any kind of monster that is equivalent to god. There are lots of Japanese folklore with fox as the most noble and strong "yokai" (monster) or "god". Hundreds of shrines in Japan have the fox (O- inari-san) as the god, like Inari Shrines. So at least in Japan, "the idea of fox" is "the symbol of god", which is scary and strong but also very much loved by people. I think this take is not too far off since the design of Aki's fox is pretty much how Japanese fox god looks like. The fox gods in Japan have white fur and their eye shapes are like Aki's fox's ones. Try searching "Inari Fox God" images and you will easily find all the Japanese fox god images.
I'm adding some other trivia too. These are not spoilers, just general Japanese culture knowledge that any Japanese watcher would think about when watching this episode.
    1. There are lots of snake gods in Japan too. In general, fox gods are stronger than snake gods, and usually, fox gods are "good" and snake gods are "evil" but not always.
    2. Aki's sword was not "a sword" and it was "a nail." The reason that was used for the "curse devil" is probably because in Japan, "the idea of nails" includes "curses". One of the most popular method of "curse" in Japan is "Ushi no koku mairi" (=Ushi no toki mairi) which uses nails and straw dolls. This curse is a curse to actually harm/kill people and you put someone's hair or body part in the straw doll and hammer that doll with metal nails. This popular method of curse is also the original idea of Kugisaki's way to fight in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Some of my observations (might be thinking too much into somethings)
-To me it gave me the vibe that Denji essentially paid for Katana mans childhood. Denji was making money to survive while katana man was getting spoiled, thus making me believe the money denji made wet to him
-The difference between Denji and Katana Man design is very interesting to me. Denji has sharp randomly placed teeth while Katana man has clean and straight. Which I believe represents further the different upbringing. Also Katana Man looks like hes wearing a military uniform
-i love the way Aki uses the Sword. When he says "now", a devil hand suddenly appears to flick it forward. Kinda reminds me of a Gun funny enough
-The curse devils activation is very clearly a crucifixion. Which is honestly very cool imagery because it uses a nail in order to use. I also like how its an abstract fear, curses are something people dont really think about
-The snake appeared suddenly and left instantly, which could be playing off that snakes are ambush hunters. Striking fast and leaving fast with no warning. It also only did a single big attack
And Katana man is just a fan name for the sword guy because his name was never given

-Little riding red hood did no use a special power to resurrect Katana Man, she just gave him some blood or pulled his "ripcord" like others have done for Denji.

enjoyed your commentary! this ep definitely added on to the world building of the show in the sense that devil hunter's lives are short and the field itself is highly dangerous, with himeno's death i think on top of it being just tragic also contributes to the running theme that a devil hunter has to have some screws loose in order to livelong in this field or even be an actual threat to devils. while she slowly does disregard her life through subtle things such as drinking, smoking which ultimately leads her to making many mistakes, she can't help but cling on to the humanity, which is why she never wants aki to die, she keeps visiting her buddies' graves...it is himeno's own humanity and love and attachment she has towards aki that brings her own undoing. as much as she tries to be desensitized to death (i.e. the facade she keeps during high stress situations, or her laughing over newbie deaths) , she can't bc himeno cares so deeply for her own buddy, but while this is something that causes her death, himeno dies happy bc she knows upon death, she won't have to suffer through the grief of losing aki, and bc she knows aki will love her, grieve her and cherish her memory.
and ppl may argue that himeno's death was for nothing, but himeno had 2 choices, which was watch aki die while she somehow lives, or sacrifice herself. Himeno is familiar to death, she's not scared of her own death as she is aki's and what himeno hates most of all is the grief that haunts her from losing everyone she works with, so ofc she'd rather die to save aki, not only bc she thinks she can stall aki's death but bc she won't have to mourn him and blame herself, she'll die knowing she gave her all, knowing that aki will cry for her. also think it's rlly cool how the ghost devil's design correlates with himeno. majority of the himeno flashbacks have either been at the grave site or with aki, and the ghost devil's design is literally based off of a grave site...the flowers, the multiple hands of the dead beneath the flowers, and a smiling peaceful corpse as it's head. himeno dying by being consumed by the ghost devil is interesting cause it means that grief, her trauma, that fear, consumed her and she is now a ghost that haunts aki and the cycle will continue. ALSO loved the shot in the ed of himeno literally in a grave naked holding herself in a vulnerable position, you could say that was where she was mentally the entire time, just waiting to die, but only living to see aki thrive.

She doesn't mention anything about popularity of the fears tho which i think is the reason the snake devil is more powerful than the ghost, as imo the idea of ghosts isn't something that's easily interpreted and probably less common than the idea of some real animal which can sneak in on you and kill you in an instant. Like, if the Yakuza had lots of guns, you’d think they’d use them to hunt devils for the black market themselves, it’s a massive source of income for them. But they use contractors like Denji. I think it’s most likely the Gun Devil literally makes contracts with people to give them guns, I bet the terms are generous too, like it only makes the Gun stronger even if it asks for nothing in return. Also interested in the model of guns used, I’m not a gun expert so I could be wrong, but they all looked like M1911’s to me, one of the longest lived and reliable pistols in history. It’s almost the platonic ideal of a gun. Like if someone told you to picture a rifle, you’re probably thinking about an M4 or AK, if you imagined a pistol, that’s the image.

It looked like to me like it was a rock papers scissors problem. Himeno's ghost could overwhelm and almost defeat the katana man but got taken out by snake lady, while Aki's curse didn't work on katana man, it may be because he looks to be the same thing denji is, Aki might've had better results if he instead attacked the snake girl instead.
But ultimately that's how the dice rolled, Himeno wouldn't have sacrificed herself if she didnt see Aki's moves fail, while the snake girl probably sent the more durable katana man to reveal and tank their abilities. Over all I think katana man appearing alone initially was an intelligent decision if we consider that he seems to be as durable as Denji is.

I love how well thought out the power levels of the devils are in terms of how much certain things are feared. The fox is seemingly more powerful than the leech, but the ghost is evidently stronger than the fox, and the snake is stronger than the ghost. It also makes perfect sense that something as abstract as an eternity devil that isn't particularly feared would need a piece of the gun to become strong. Now I'm left waiting for the Fire, Darkness, Death, Ocean, Forest, Human, and maybe even just a general Fear Devil. Also, given all of this, my only question for Caleb is: Spider Devil when?
I think we've already got our hint as to Makima's state. After all, if she drank so much without really feeling it, I get the sense that she's more akin to a Demon Slayer demon than a devil, and I would not be surprised in the slightest at this point if she could just regrow her own head Reiner/Yushiro style.
Edit: Also the Storm Devil would be neat.
Edit Edit: I love the gun granny, and the girl might not have two contracts. The Snake could have healing abilities a la rod of Asclepius.

The little monologue the yakuza grandson gives about how his grandfather was a "Good Yakuza" is often considered to be a reference to another Shonen Jump series called Nisekoi.
In that series, the main character has a grandfather in the yakuza and said something along the lines of his clan "being a good yakuza that protects the town". This line of logic got meme'd to hell in the Japanese fandom and some suspect the author of inserting the diatribe about how the good yakuza "only killed a handful of women and children" here as a takedown

In regards to the attack on Denji's group and specifically the weirdness of sword-man's words and motivations, it's important to remember that Denji isn't seen as just one entity in this world he's seen as two: Denji and Pochita.
We've seen by now that there are a number of devils that want Denji's heart (A.K.A Pochita) with the eternity devil and now the gun devil while not really caring about Denji.
so while sword-man's job is to take Denji's heart to the gun devil, sword-man only really cares about getting revenge on Denji, and Denji doesn't need to be alive to have his heart delivered.

Given that swords guy is the new cool ranch flavor of Devil Hybrid just like Denji, then the Gun Devil would be after him too if this was about their shared condition. He could be planning to offer Denji up as an appeasement to save his own skin, but the fact that he specified Denji’s heart (the exact organ that Pochita replaced) makes me think that this is about Pochita. The Eternity Devil blabbering on about how far “Chainsaw” has fallen means this would give us a second Devil with a personal vendetta against the Chainsaw Devil.
This begs the question of when, why, and how the tiny chainsaw dog earned their ire, and I think Makima might know the answer. Makima refuses to tell us why she’s so interested in Denji, and she hasn’t shown nearly as much interest in Power despite the two of them displaying about the same level of promise as combatants. Something tells me her interest isn’t just an academic curiosity about new things.

Something I saw you two confused about was fiends and devil hunters. Makima explains in EP2 that Aki's devil Hunter division is experimental, hence trying to use fiends and devil-hybrids for devil hunting.
The welcoming party in EP7 consists of all the members of Aki's division, hence why there should have been another fiend, but was too crazy to attend.
Something to remember is that when Denji and Power were patrolling, if they came across private devil hunters or police, they specifically had to identify which division they are affiliated with, because fiends are usually killed on sight by Devil hunters.

One of the things that I love about Fujimoto's incredible art and design work on Chainsaw Man is how all the Devils we get to see the full forms of have this fantastic body-horror theming to them. Devils are born of human fear, and Fujimoto gives them all some element of twisted human form, regardless of the concept they represent.
The first devil we see is the Tomato Devil, and it has too many eyes, is sprouting limbs, and has a grotesque vertical mouth. The Eternity Devil is an endless mass of flesh with horrible heads, mouths, and hands all flowing into one another like John Carpenter's The Thing. The Snake Devil has a monstrously creative head made of interlocking arms.
It really underscores the idea that they are derived from and are a dark reflection of humanity.

every person they went after was a member of the fourth squad, which means they all most likely had devil contracts or were fiends so the point of the guns was to take out the threat before they can react with their abilities. Second just because we only see the sword guy and snake girl didnt mean the rest dont have abilities, his was simply the only hit to not go successfully that we could see(most likely because of the personal grudge and monologue) and so he had to use his abilities as back up. and lastly notice they only said to proceed with the operation once they thought for sure they got makima, meaning she was by far the biggest threat that they needed to take out without her powers being used or the rest of the operation wasnt possible

I'm sure you will notice soon a 0-100 tendency which leaves you speechless. This is in Chainsaw Man and Fujimoto's other works like Fire Punch, Goodbye Eri, etc. I think this sudden pacing is an amazing move on the author's part as it emphasizes the shock, horror, and displays of overwhelming power that are shown in his writing style. They enhance the reading of Fujimoto's other works but feel like they were made perfectly for Chainsaw Man.

A recap page gives him the title of "samurai Sword", while more popularly the fans took to calling him another name due to how obviously he's meant to parralel denji: Katana Man.This latter name is what you'll see like EVERYONE call him to the point I thought it actually was his official name before I found out otherwise.

A small detail I'd like to point out: the group did hear the gunshots but they didn't recognize them. They thought it was the sound of taiko drums but they didn't even consider any kind of training or violent crime involving guns. It was previously mentioned how guns are heavily censored on media, but devil hunters (and the police who they are working with) are supposedly allowed to use them. And yet even the people who are allowed guns don't know how a gunshot sounds.
If Public Safety, a structure under the government, doesn't use guns, why do yakuza have them?

I am unsure if they are going to show it next episode or not, but just in case it does, the cost of using the Snake Devil is actually very small. This episode also reinforces the idea that the devil "hybrids," for lack of a better term, taste very different from both humans and devils, as seen previously with the Bat Devil.
