this isn't something you directly suggested in the video BUT it gave me the idea of making a pinterest board with just pictures of my own outfits and I think I'm gonna get a lot of mileage out of that in 2024

i love these tips. i think it may be helpful for people struggling to build a personal style to go through their wardrobe - including shoes/jewelry/socks/hats/keychains/etc., and ask themselves, “would i buy this again? why or why not?”
once you’re able to articulate WHAT u like about a piece & WHY u like it - it becomes much easier to build a wardrobe you’ll get a lot of wear out of :) ppl should approach trends this way too!! instead of blindly buying a similar item - ask yourself WHY u like that particular item. for example: i loved the feminine look of tiered skirts in the “fairycore” trend - so i’ve applied that to many items in my wardrobe to this day.

    My advice and struggle
    Tips:
    - I have kept a running list of things I need to buy for years....turns out a list of things I need to stop buying is just as useful. We all have things we love in theory but just don't work for us (alternatively we have too many of - tight turtlenecks for me)
-Try out anything and everything to get more "data" even if you don't end up using it long-term. I had an app to track stuff in my closet for a couple months, I looked into Kibbie body types, etc.
    - look for people who are your "style goals" and follow them on social media - you will see which pieces they wear over and over again its great inspo
    - Give yourself time, you won't gain anything by rushing it , only have a bigger chance of messing up. It's a long process and you will learn over time
    Struggle:
    - I'm definitely not the only one who feels like they need 3 separate closets - it's hard for me to find my "signature pieces" when I have to think about outfits for work (I'm a teacher), outfits when I'm going out, and outfits for regular ME ect

I am currently obsessed with "changing my style" (not really changing but expand on it) and I ncame up with something that works great for me, and I think that it would complement the tips of this video quite nicely, so I'll walk you through it :
First I made a list of styles and aesthetics I find myself driven to. (I have grunge, punk, emo, goth, fairycore, hippie, witchy, goblincore, grandpacore, hobbitcore and pirate. As you can see, there are two main categories, one that would be alt, and the other one more whimsycal)
I then went to pinterest and searched each style, making a board with everything, and also a specific board for each.
Simultaneously, but you can do it afterwards (directly in the table would be the most efficient), I wrote down every element I liked in the outfits. Of course some elements are common to multiple styles.
You could stop there but I'm a little bit crazy and I love stats, so I made a table on notion, with a column for each style, one to indicate if I could make the item myself, and another one to specify which kind of element it was (a specific cut, a colorpalette, an accessory, a certain pattern, certain fabric ...) And of course the first column is for the elements themselves.
And now comes the tedious part : writing down every single element, and checking the corresponding boxes.
This way, I can see clearly the most versatile elements, that would be the items I'm gonna look for in priority. When comparing with my wardrobe, I can see what is missing, and what I got covered.
When I went through my wardrobe, I kept in mind the aesthetic I want (I ended up naming it "anarchist fairy" cause it fits my vibe). For each item, the questions were : Does it suit my style ? If not : Is there a practical use for it (clothes that are appropriate for a working environment, sports clothes, warm clothes for the mountain ...) And a very important one : does it spark joy ? If it doesn't fit the vibe I'm going for but I love it and wear it all the time, I keep it.
Not gonna lie, a lot of my clothes went to the "to fix or transform" pile. Some things I kept just for the fabric.
I am far from done, but it was really fun to do, I now have a clear idea of what I am looking for (my top 3 items needed are a brown corset belt, black fingerless gloves, and elf ears. These ones are not an emergency, but since there's no way I could make it myself I might as well get them as soon as possible. Plus they make me really happy, and I want to have a pierced pair, so I can add jewelry and not give a f**k if the quality is terrible cause it will only go in plastic ears.
That was a very long comment but I thought the process might help some of y'all

The “style inspiration” bit really hit home! Letting your passions and hobbies and things have a little impact on your style can be a good shortcut to loving it more. My problem is I love geeky stuff but don’t really enjoy having them loudly emblazoned on my body and it’s also not work appropriate, so I made a compromise and curate pins to put on my everyday pin bag 😂!
Lovely video as always, happy 2024!

I started keeping an "outfits" pinterest with things similar to what i actually own separate from my general fashion board and it's so helpful especially when I don't know what to wear. I've also started using pinterest shuffles with pictures of my clothes like I used to use polyvore and keeping those in there. I know there were other polyvore alternatives but this one has really been the easiest for me. I'm still trying to reduce over-consumption but it's definitely helped.

such good advice and super personalized! a staple for me are simple boatneck longsleeve shirts and plattform sneakers. when its cold im wearing my beloved baby blue pufferjacket and beanie almost every day. im most inspired by the sixties, tho its hard to find certain pieces in the style of that decade.
Since im starting my first "real" job/intership this year, I, for the first time in my life, had to think about dressing work-appropriate. I would love a video from you on how to do business-casual without sacrificing your personal style

    • @SatipatthanaSakuraDragona
      @SatipatthanaSakuraDragona 11 месяцев назад +4

I'm probably old enough to be your mom, so I thought I'd throw in my two cents. What is work appropriate can depend a lot on the industry, the country, the city, and the general vibe of your employer. I dress my best for the interview and the first few days just to feel out what everyone else is wearing (no one will think it's weird if you are very dressy the first few days, it is expected and shows you are being respectful). During those first few days, take note of what people are wearing. The most dressed up and least dressed up will show you the spectrum and boundaries. Do understand that the least dressed up and most casual folks are probably the people that are too good to fire (or are secretly trying to getting fired and showing it). You should not think you'd have the same leeway. Basically, do not go out and buy a whole lot of new things. You might be surprised after your reconnaissance on what you can wear.

    • @avr7120
      @avr7120 10 месяцев назад +3

@@SatipatthanaSakuraDragona hi! First, thank you for your input.
Sadly the interview was per video chat but she did wear one of those colourful bead choker necklaces and when I asked about company culture she told me they weren't very traditional and despite being a large international corporation they have "start-up qualities".
So those are good signs haha (if it's true).
I will probably still do what you suggested and show up a little more formal and muted the first week to scope things out further just to be safe lol

I have a both "misc fashion" Pinterest board where I just pin anything I sorta like or find interesting, and then a much smaller, more curated "main" fashion board of what I consider my current style. So stuff I reasonably think I could wear/actually want to wear. As my style changes and evolves over time and or as the seasons change, I move pins between the two boards. If I'm no longer feeling into something in my main, curated board I'll 'demote' it to the misc board and vice versa. If something I was just curious or only slightly intrigued by becomes something I later get obsessed with, it'll get 'promoted' to my main board.

After having my daughter, my body changed so drastically that my whole style was shook! I would try to wear what I used to, and things just layer differently on my body. It didn’t make me feel like me. It has been 7 years or reinventing my style to feel more like myself again. I feel like I’m 30 inside, but, my body is 40. And now 25 pounds heavier. It’s a challenge that has been overwhelming and sometimes fun.
I work in the fashion industry, before I would fit sample size and got free clothes. It was easy to experiment and throw on anything, and it worked. But now, I have to buy every piece I own. Now I thrift mostly, and that’s a game in itself for bigger sizes. Slowly I am learning what makes me feel like myself again, falling in love with accessories again. Making my outfit based off my footwear. If anyone is going through something similar, hang in there. Inspiration and admiration for your body and style will come with time. Lastly don’t be afraid to try things on at the store (even if you are not buying it). It really gives you perspective of what works and what doesn’t.

I will occasionally get comments from old friends on social media who are like, "You always had the best jewelry and fun shirts," when I post something, and I think that's so fun. I love color and patterns, especially graphic tee shirts, those have been a staple in my life since I was a kid and I'm in my 30's now. Like most new mums, I lost myself for a bit, because I was in survival mode, my body was different and at the time, lived in a place that was too hot and too humid for me to dress comfortably. My personal style has seen a major shift throughout my twenties. When I was in community college i had teal blue hair and always wore black skinny jeans, black socks, black vans and a flannel (it was adorable). Then i left the county backpacking for a year. Dyed my hair brown, let it grow out, didnt wear any makeup, and my wardrobe was a mish mash of cool stuff I found that would easily fit in my pack. When I got back to America I went back to college and started running and joined a gym. When I wasn't in workout clothes or concert blacks I wore ripped jeans or mini skirts with graphic tees (also adorable). Now I'm a schoolteacher. I can't wear graphic tees or ripped jeans to work, and I recently finally tossed all my mini skirts 😢 it was so sad. It's hard to express myself through my clothes at work because I have to be "business casual", but I also get a lot of dress up days, which is fun. My outfit formula right now is a baggy sweater, maxi skirt, chunky sneakers, a couple silver necklaces and silver earrings up my ears. STILL adorable 😉 and i get to wear my ripped jeans on the weekends.

Okay but you’re so right about being true to yourself. The thing that made all my clothes feel off for a whole decade was literally just the fact that I forgot to dress as just a basic Aussie girl/woman 😂 Like that’s it, that was the missing piece.
I lost that part of my style when I moved countries because I didn’t have access to the same shops when my size changed and it was never something I’d consciously chosen before I moved, it was just default. It was only when I looked back on some childhood photos one day that I realised! It felt silly because it’s kinda obvious and boring but ever since I made an effort to include that back into my style I’ve felt way better in my clothes and I shop much less 😊

I have been going through my wardrobe lately, and I realized I have 2 types of items. 1. Items I wear because I like to wear them, 2. Items I wear because I own them. I will wear something if I own it because I don’t want it to sit in the closet forever, but I never like those outfits as much. I measure this way when I go shopping too: I would wear this if I had it, but is it good enough that I would buy it?

This video was so so helpful! I find it hard to reflect my personal style at work, I don't have a uniform but I need to be wary of infection control as I work with patients (optom). I can't rly wear too much frills, need to be bare below my elbows etc when I LOVE THEM AND LOVE BILLOWY VIBES IF YOU GET ME??? so I will try to apply this video to my dilemma! :) any tips would be greatly appreciated

Ah yea trying to express ones personal style in the work place...sighs. The struggle is real. I have a very casual, laid back, and boho style. I'm going to be interviewing for a job where they actual say to dress business professional- never have I ever, and I'm older.

ahh I get you! some style options that could work - butterfly short sleeves, blouses with embroidery, circle skirts (especially longer ones), culottes etc.. I often use a formula of flowy bottom half + closer fitting upper body (or vice versa) to create a silhouette that isn't too overwhelming for my bodytype.

I'd say one should always mix and match vibes.. for me, wide black pants in a flowy fabric became such a closet staple that I am literally associated with them in my friend group. Also, boot cut low rise denim. These two items are totally different vibes - the black pants can be much more formal while the low rise boot cut jeans are more casual. But both of them are equally my style 😋

One of my biggest struggles is my style is based on it being warm outside but I live in the Uk which is cold 80% of the year 😢 I try and just layer my essentials pieces but it often doesn't work because I have to add so many outer layers over the top and I haven't found any outer layers that are my own style 🙃

I'm like sooo bad at actually making myself buy basic layering pieces 😭 end up with a wardrobe that all statement and not a single buildable outfit.

  • @cy_ace

I really the disclaimer at the end. I personally have a really basic style and I usually go with neutral tones.
I really admire people who can pull off playful outfits and be adventurous with prints. I have a friend, she’s v pretty and I like how she got her own style and pull it off effortlessly. I would feel bad, thinking that I’m so boring with my choice of clothings and how I’m not creative/spontaneous with my outfits.
I do tell myself that it’s ok to have a more basic taste, I don’t have to force myself to try playful fits. But sometimes I do wish that I can be more creative with my outfit and try out different styles.

Love this vid thank you! One thing I'm unsure on tho - I love switching up what I wear for how I'm feeling - sometimes I like grunge makeup w leather jacket and all black fits to embody the rock music I love whilst others I like pinky makeup and wearing my 70s inspired afgan coat and flowy skirt - does this mean I don't really have personal style if i change it up so much so often?

i'm the same way! my look can be super fem and girly one day, and the complete opposite the next depending on my mood! i think that just means that we can't fit into a box, and just enjoy expressing our personalities in different ways. i've heard the term "character dressing" used lately to refer to this idea of changing styles every day, and i really like that. i think it just means you have a fun and creative personal style. you wear whatever feels like you on a given day! it can be really hard when it comes to wardrobe building though...that's my problem haha

That is your personal style then. You don’t have to follow one specific aesthetic, if you are interested in certain things or music those interests will create a unique look that is based around you. It makes it hard to downsize for sure (I have this problem) but I noticed my multiple interests combine and there are specific aspects about these aesthetics like the silhouette, color palettes or material textures that I’m drawn to from all these influences that end up blending together to create a unique look.
