It's still so crazy how much Maomao is like all three of her parents, despite not having two of them around. Her medicinal knowledge and compassion from Luomen, her curious and easily misread intellect from Lakan, And her secretive, "read between the lines" habits from Fengxian.
you forgot that she has 4 more 'parents': the 3 courtesans and the hag. Remember that Pairin was the one to breastfed her when she was a baby. Ruomen: medicines and understandings Fonshen: intellectual Rakan: instinct and guts The Hag of Rokushoukan: manipulative and money loving Pairin, Meimei, and Joka: survival and "back-road" knowledge
I believe that she really had her intellect because of her mother. Chapters ago, MaoMao indicates that Lancan arrives at her analysis through intuition, while she is not like that. MaoMao's mother was possibly extremely intelligent, but she had to lead a life as a courtesan and we don't see her in a position as a military strategist like Lancan, but we can see that she won at the game every time.
Another thing she inherited from her mother is Pride. That same pride is also part why she dislikes Rakan so much, because the person she respects the most praises him highly.
So, some stuff got skipped from the novel when adapting this episode. Most importantly, Meimei is in love with Lakan. Throughout the season the show has implied that Lakan has been seeing Meimei regularly to play Go and in the hopes of buying out MaoMao. Meimei has mentioned that being bought out by Lakan wouldn't be a bad option for her but not until Lakan sees Fengxian again does she break down and cry. There's a line they skipped after she says "you should have been honest sooner." Meimei then says, "you gave me hope" the implication being she really did want to be bought out by Lakan. Lastly, the thing in the box MaoMao is looking at is not Ox bezoar. Those are the fungus caterpillars Jinshi gave her on buying her out. She still hasn't received the Ox Bezoar
Yeah it was "implied" how invested Meimei was by her breaking down crying but it would've been a nice touch to add that line in as well. And I think a lot of reaction channels forgot that Maomao received those cordyceps fungi earlier from Jinshi so they thought within the context it was the bezoar, not knowing what a bezoar is lol.

The LN and manga make it clearer that the granny tells Lakan that Fengxian died, not just that "she's gone." Lakan's reunion with Fengxian makes me cry. And I'm not a crier. I'm so glad they got a little bit of happiness, however bittersweet it is with Fengxian being terminal.

her mom planned it in a way so that lakan would have to take responsibility and buy her out in his next visit in 6 months, but the plan failed so the thought of being abandoned by the one she thought was her lover drove her mad
With this episode, it was clear who had the most resentment for Lakan, it was the old lady.... she was the one who blocked Lakan from knowing that her woman was alive, she was the one that hit him saying he ruined her life (and also almost ruined the brothel), but Lakan was completely innocent, the old lady was "guilty" but it was out of spite of she thought Lakan did, same with MaoMao's mom, she thought Lakan abandon her. In the end, Lakan get her Lady for as few time she has left, but she is in a semivegetative state, otherwise there would have been a more intense reaction... but Lakan swallow up all that, and said "give me my woman", and in the future if MaoMao's in trouble not only Jinshi will try to protect her, but Lakan will also involve (i had read that he ordered for the guard that hit MaoMao to be executed, but MaoMao interceded for him).
It's been implied that the hag tried her best to hid Fonshen (Maomao's mum) and her all-about from the world (including to Rakan and Maomao) out of 'love' because she wanted to protect Fonshen's pride, since Fonshen was known for her enermous ego and pride. It was the least she could do for her mentally damaged daughter (Yup, the hag is Maomao's actual grandmother).

Maomao’s dance scene absolutely STUNNING in every way, I was speechless watching it… and she looked so gorgeous in that dress too. Kudos to the animators for animating that wonderful dance!
In case someone hasn't said. The severing of the fingers was a curse telling him she's severed their red string of fate. He'd never find his destined soulmate (and daughter) throughout this lifetime and the next. Supposedly there is a god whose main purpose is to tie people together and they are tied by their left pinky fingers. ( don't quote me it might be the right). Some myths just have the string tied to anything. Dramatic license.
Mei Mei was not bought out, Fengxian Mao Mao's mother was. Mei Mei retired, the send off was why Mao Mao danced. Also, both Fengxian and Lakan were excellent strategists, the pregnancy was planned by Fengxian. However, at the same time the whole debacle of the Emperor's two sons happened and Mao Mao's adoptive father - Lakan's Uncle - was ripped of his status. Therefore Lakan was forced to go to the frontlines in the war. Lakan thought Fengxian was angry at him because she never answered a single letter he had written to her in his absence. Granny is the real villain here. She's Fengxians mother. So the fact that she forced Fengxian to the streets and out of the brothel, and then kept Fengxian from her only means of connecting to Lakan is what drove her daughter to go crazy - that and the std. All Granny actually cares about is money, something Mao Mao never fogets since she was meant to be sold later in her mothers place. Granny must have heard of Lakan's status constantly being elevated and panicked. Remember, even the Emperor is careful around him and doesn't want him as an enemy. Had Lakan found out sooner what Granny was scheming, he could have easily taken her and her brothel down. The only thing saving Granny was the fact that she was the one with the information on Fengxian's location. This effectively kept Lakan in check. So again, Granny is the real pos here. She even still milked Lakan of money for Fengxian and will sell Mao Mao again if given the chance. Let's not forget that

I get that technically in their eyes Fengxian sullied their brothels reputation by getting pregnant and that courtesan's don't usually see themselves as mothers to their children but the fact she still sent her pregnant daughter out there onto the streets to the dangers of both assault and disease is pretty unforgivable especially after keeping Lakan from seeing Fengxian earlier and also Luomen to an extent who couldv'e treated Fengxian before things got so bad. She needs her ass beat 😭
In *ch 37* and *ch 39* of the manga, it gives more context of why Maomao has an odd relationship with her dad. The anime didn't have some parts, so it gives a better explanation for why she dislikes him from how she saw him as a child and she doesn't want him to replace Luomen as her father.
she doesn't actually dislike him, it's just her pride saying that. She was even thankful he allowed her to stay with Ruomen. She also know everything about him, how he felt about her, and everything. It's just that Maomao unable to 'love'. She's got such big ego just like Fonshen.

She doesn't hate him but she has an instinctual fear towards him because of the circumstances of their first meeting where he was all bloodied up from the Granny's beatings and that image of him burned into her subconscious

Maomao trolling Jinshi at the end and the ensuing headbutt was gold. One fact that may have been missed is that Lakan's uncle is implied to be Maomao's current adopted father. It's not shown outright but when putting in the pieces together, it does imply that he was Lakan's uncle and he was the one who taught Lakan how to recognize people with this condition. And in ancient Chinese dynasties, the people who are closest to the emperor in his court tend to be from noble families. So, technically, Maomao's current adopted father, Luomen is most likely her grand-uncle.
When Lakan ran to the brothel after being gone for 3 years, he asked for Maomao’s mother but the granny told him she was gone. He actually didn’t know she was still around
Children's fingers can apparently regrow as long as it's the tip. But that's also why Maomao's pinky regrew but it's now crooked. Also from the LN, Lakan thinks he was at fault for being impulsive during that night he slept with Fengxian, so even though she was the one that tricked him he still thinks it's his fault for letting it happen 😔 so for 15 years he thought it was his fault he lost both her and Maomao and that's why he's always come back to the Verdigris House to buy Maomao but she always evaded him lol (there's a reason why but maybe they'll say in the 2nd season so please look forward to it )
I think her evading him could be due to fact, she is the product of the reason why the House almost went bankrupt, she hears rumours all the time about her and her mum. Her mum hates her for destroying her pride and the reason she's in that situation (even though that's on her), and you've got some creepy guy coming round all the time saying you're his daughter and trying to buy you out, a good case to avoid him.
I'll be honest, I had to look it up if the tip of Maomao's finger got cut off as a baby, or if it was just another chunk her mom cut off herself to make it look like it was a baby's finger. I don't know how much of a fingertip was actually cut off, but from personal experience, yeah, it'll grow back if it's not too much. Be careful with deli slicers, everyone. I do remember Maomao looking at her left hand's pinky quite a number of times, usually when she was lost in thought - it makes a lot more.
But back in the 1970s, scientists showed that children can sometimes regrow the tip of an amputated finger, as long as there's a bit of nail left over and the wound isn't stitched up.

In Lakan's flashback, it shows you that the old lady (forgot her name) told him that she passed away which was an excuse to get him away from the brothel and Lakan had more days than what he expected. So, in retrospect, Lakan thought the only woman who he's comfortable with passed away.
Maomao's little tribute dance at the rooftop was genuinely one of the most beautiful anime scenes I've ever seen, I think. No words needed, just pure emotion.

Of course, this episode also makes it clear that in her heart, Maomao is about as far from a noble as you can get. Ill-suited to courtesan work though she may be, she is a child of Verdigris House, and wherever her life takes her, I think part of her will always think of it as home.

It's a bittersweet moment for Lakan and Fengxian. I'm glad Maomao was able to help them resolve their painful past. Solid first season. Glad there will be more of the series. Maomao's invested in trolling Jinshi, which means their shenanigans will reach new levels.
Mei Mei crying that Feng Xian was not honest. If she had just told Lakan about it her plan they could have been together. Finger tips, up until the fingernails, can grow back especially in kids who are still growing up.
I'm going to miss weekly Frieren and MaoMao. They shortened this last arc a bit, slightly rushed. Lakan did try coming back over and over to get his daughter, but the old BaBa kept driving him away. He also thought MaoMao's mom died as BaBa said she was gone.

3:48 Madam probably believed right up until this moment that Lakan simply abandoned Fengxian and it took a decade or more for Lakan to repent for his sin, but now she realises that Lakan never wanted this to happen and always wanted Fengxian as his wife from the very start That was likely what Meimei meant when she tearfully said that Fengxian should've just told them that she loved Lakan from the very beginning, hinting that Fengxian kept the whole plan secret She might love cash more than most; but the Madam probably would have made an exception for Fengxian had she stated her love for Lakan, considering that she is her biological daughter!
The old lady is the actual villain, she keep Fengxian hidden and lied to Lakan about her because she was upset he ruined her pay day and "abandoned" her after the fact even though he didnt knowingly do that and even came back after he realized.
Lakan, breaking down because he finally was able to reunite with his love is so heart wrenching. It is a peak bitter sweet moment. So much pain from thinking she was Gone from this world, but to see her again made his world.
Fengxian sent her finger and her baby finger tip to Lakan. Her finger fully healed. Lakan bought Fengxian and while Meimei loved him she was willing to let her big sister take Lakan. I wonder if in the future Meimei and Lakan get together, prob not until he can see her face.
Rakan often visited Meimei only to play shogi since it reminds him of Fonshen (Meimei was Fonshen's only student), but still no matter what Rakan couldn't see her face (telling us that he doesn't have a single bit of feelings towards her). So does Meimei, as she only close with Rakan, aside from her job, because she was curious about the man who made Fonshen destroyed herself. You can say that she is their biggest shipper.

When you already know about the fingertip on a rewatch, it gets pointed out many times with Meimei looking at it. And much of the media more fully tells us how it got cut off and grew back crooked.
The tip of the finger got cut off, i once accidentally cut the tip of my pointer finger off when i was using a mandalin making potato chips. My finger tip grew back but you can tell where cuz it’s discolored like lighter than my actual skin. But im okay everything is fine. This was a freaking tear jerker. After I watched it a few times, I realized that the story's first intro was most likely from Lakan's perspective. Adoring a flower bulb that grows out beside a wall (of the red district) letting it grow and try not to be notice by others. To him, he didn't care if it ever bloom as he loved it regardless. No material or ornaments is worthy of accompanying it as it itself is unparalleled in value to him. Yet when it blooms it became the poison that strangely becomes the one medicine that helps cure him after being poisoned by the beauty (of her mother's) allure that he drank that night.

She cut off the tip of her pinky. And it actually grew back in super crooked. Maomao was talking about how her mom "lost her mind" at that point which was exemplified by the image of her leaning over her daughter wielding a knife lol. I love that Lakan sees Fengxian the way he does. Despite her illness. And she recognized him after so long, all he had to do was grab her hand and ask her to play Go. At the end, those were still the same cordyceps that Maomao got from Jinshi earlier. A bezoar looks nothing like that lol, it's more of a round ball-ish shape.
I would say Lakan is the author teaching readers the lesson for Luomen's "Don't speak based on conjecture." We were never shown any examples or evidence of Lakan being scum or malicious, we the audience just assumed he was based on a small amount of detail.
But that’s how storytelling works. You’re supposed to use subtlety, literary techniques, and direction to learn about the characters and know what they are about without anyone blatantly telling you. I guess there’s a lesson of not everything is how it appears, but it kinda feels like cheating. XD
Everyone was at fault here. Yes it was a tragedy and Fengxian clapped herself by not being honest with Lakan but everyone’s so happy to hate on her and the old lady just because Lakan cried the most. Women with their experience have tons of reasons not to trust the men in their lives, remember the customer from the other brothel who was poisoned? Man disappeared for three years then expected them to just give him his daughter when he showed up cos he cried and said he was sorry? It was Fengxian who nearly wrecked the brothel, but the old lady had no way of knowing Lakan wouldn’t just abandon her again when he saw what happened to her. Lakan knew where Maomao was and instead of sending her money or some other means of support he let her grow up poor and get kidnapped. And there are some things about his family history that, even if he had succeeded in taking her away as a child, she wouldn’t be safe in the family house anyway. I agree with Maomao. Those people have a beautiful, tragic love story and I cried when they got back together, but they’re not her parents. She has a lovely adoptive dad, a wonderful set of big sisters and hopefully a bright future at the palace, on her own merit.
So to explain a few things. Lakan was told MaoMao's mom was dead that's what the old lady meant by, "shes gone" Secondly they made a show to make it seem like MeiMei was being bought out but it was a cover for MaoMao's mom getting bought since she cant go out in public due to her syphilis and they wanted the celebration. And finally Humans are amazing things, You're constantly regenerating cells to the point, When you're young, you're basically getting a new body every seven years. Ever got a nasty Cut or something like that as a kid and now there isn't even a scar? Maomao had the tip of little finger cut off but because it was such a small piece and she was so young it grew back and healed over her life.
Poor Lakan. When Granny told him Fengxian was "gone", he thought she was dead. That's why he focused so much on Maomao, as he thought she was all he had left of her. And when he finally finds out, it's almost too late. She's not long for this world, given the late stages of her disease.
This anime told us not to make conclusions based on conjecture on multiple occasions including a "this worked this time, but we still shouldn't do it". We did it anyway. Like the idiot children that we are.
But that’s how people are supposed to work. You can only make conclusions based on what you know and further update them when you get new information. That’s how every advancement we’ve had has worked out no? Also it’s a bit unfair to have a series’s direction practically shove it down your throat a character is bad and then expect us to not think that way. XD
About the finger, it's not commonly known since it's a little messed up, but when a baby is first born, they retain a bit of their ability to sprout body parts. Nothing crazy, but a fingertip is well within the realm of being able to regrow if the infant is young enough. That's kinda where the whole stem cell thing comes from. As one is developing in the womb, you get a bunch of "unassigned" cells that would in this case take up the identity of "we are now a fingertip". I apologize if that wasn't a proper explanation.
I always thought Fengxian was the one who didn't want Lakan or Maomao to see her because she's too prideful for them to see her in her diseased and deformed condition (if I'm not mistaken she lost her nose to the disease). I think that's why they never told Lakan about her. Maybe they also think there's no way he still wants her at this point.
Sooo... I dunno why but I was extremely relieved to see that Lakan actually didn't r*pe anyone, which is a pretty dark topic for a lighthearted show. The outcome was actually wholesome and I don't hate the dude anymore
Not so fun fact: The mom was actually dead in the original Web Novel. It makes wonder if the reason the author had the Granny tell Lakan “she’s gone” was to keep the rest of the background story from changing too much (basically not giving MaoMao a somewhat happier life)
Yes it all grows back a little before the wound closes and settles, so if its just the tip it will basically all grow back, though it feels less sensitive to touch still. Maybe if you're just a baby when that happens you wont even notice it.
This season took my breath away. I did not think I could develop sympathy for Lakan. He was not a villain but I did think he was a deeply morally flawed. The finale exploded that view and really revealed the tragedy that many contributed towards and Lakan’s real feeling for Fengxian.
When he run under the rain, the old lady told him she is gone (while hitting him this the broom). It is logical to think she is dead, specially if he (like every client) was never allow in the back shack.
12:35 It was this Courtesan pregnancy part which was the trigger for me on doubting the whole plot relating to Maomao and her Dad (when i read the Manga). While the Author did try to present Lakan as the evil guy who supposedly forcefully impregnated Maomao's mother. But that is a weird point in itself (which was actually the hint from the Author). I mean, Maomao's mother was a Courtesan, and in general majority of Courtesan do pleasure work, and considering there is no mention of stuff like condom, suggest they do it raw. And that would mean that they had to have methods to avoid unwanted pregnancy or abortion already (or else, the pleasure district and the brothels would be filled with children of the Courtesans). So, making the whole aspect of "reducing price by getting said Courtesan pregnant" seems a bit farfetched (even if done forcefully), unless the Courtesan herself wanted to bare a child or was extremely unlucky.
I think maomao mom plotted out of love because they shared such commonalities but he couldnt afford her and others were consonstantly bidding. MM mom’s apprentice at the time was MeiMei and when he finally got to MM’s mom Meimei said “if this is what you wanted along you should have been more honest, sister” or something like that. Which i take as if she shared the plan with him it wouldnt have turned out the way it did. At the beginning Lakan decribes her as prideful which is a trait we can see MM show as well espiecally when it comes to the class divide amongst the ppl in her life. So i think her mom was the same. She loved Lakan but knew her place as a courtesan and him from a distinguished family. She didnt wanna beg or be emotional cause he himself comes off as a practical dude. So MM’s mom comes up with this plot to get the man she loves to buy her out so if it worked out she would have secured a marriage/buy out because he would take responsibilty as the one who ruined her but also he could afford to take responsibility cause her price woulda went down. Its a good show. I started reading the manga and it really starts gettin into it. Cant wait for season 2
About the Finger Thing: i heard that it only works if the Body is still growing, so you would have to do that to a Baby or a Toddler. (Now i am scared on how we know That!)
My interpretation of the mom's actions is that she wanted a baby for a long time but never found someone she wanted to have a child with. She was prideful after-all. Then she met Lakan and slowly fell in love with him. Her desire for a child became both her "secret" desire and a way to be with the person she loved. They had their night together on the day she knew she would most likely conceive but Lakan is shipped off after saying he wouldn't be able to visit until another 3 months. We know how that went. I think what broke her wasn't the waiting but how much her plan blew up into flames. She had so much pride but found love and a way to be the person she loved even at the risk of her whole world going up in flames at the prospect of failure. She takes that risk and what does she get in return? Nothing. Yes, she had the child she always desired, but she could've played the long game, would've played the long game, to become some high official's concubine and then have a child but she found love and wanted Lakan. Who never came back, sent a letter, anything. Her value in her world became rock-bottom, her pride had no basis, to live she had to become a streetwalker when she would never have been touched for years until she was bought out. I don't doubt that to her even if she knew that she had to "work" to live, and was raised in that culture, it felt like no less than r*** at first before she sunk into her depressing new normal. If not regarding her body but of her ideals, her pride, of who she saw herself as. Then she gets sick with a deadly disease that ruins her body and causes her growing-immense pain, and she still had to work. Literally torture of the body and the mind. "That nightmare" as Maomao remembered it was probably her snapping point and was probably done when Maomao was a toddler. I wish Maomao got to have a mom, I wish Fengxian got her happy ever after with Lakan [the one she risked everything for] but that's not this story.
I can’t see Fengxian as having any desire for a child for its own sake. She chopped a damn fingertip off, and Maomao speaks of being hatefully chased out of the sickroom in later years. I’m not seeing any evidence Maomao meant anything more than a way to abort the bidding war so the man she actually wanted could afford to buy her out.
Fonshen fell in love with Rakan, as she saw him as the only human being able to compete with her. She only kept her baby as a tool to make Rakan willing to buy her, while also lowering her price. She's the embodiment of icy queen full of ego and pride, that's why when the one plan she treaded so carefully failed, it also took her sanity away. While I think Maomao was wrong for treating Rakan that way, Fonshen was never a mother to Maomao, and even saw her as her source of curse and burden.

I believe that she really had her intellect because of her mother. Chapters ago, MaoMao indicates that Lancan arrives at her analysis through intuition, while she is not like that.
MaoMao's mother was possibly extremely intelligent, but she had to lead a life as a courtesan and we don't see her in a position as a military strategist like Lancan, but we can see that she won at the game every time.

So, some stuff got skipped from the novel when adapting this episode.
Most importantly, Meimei is in love with Lakan. Throughout the season the show has implied that Lakan has been seeing Meimei regularly to play Go and in the hopes of buying out MaoMao. Meimei has mentioned that being bought out by Lakan wouldn't be a bad option for her but not until Lakan sees Fengxian again does she break down and cry. There's a line they skipped after she says "you should have been honest sooner." Meimei then says, "you gave me hope" the implication being she really did want to be bought out by Lakan.
Lastly, the thing in the box MaoMao is looking at is not Ox bezoar. Those are the fungus caterpillars Jinshi gave her on buying her out. She still hasn't received the Ox Bezoar
Yeah it was "implied" how invested Meimei was by her breaking down crying but it would've been a nice touch to add that line in as well. And I think a lot of reaction channels forgot that Maomao received those cordyceps fungi earlier from Jinshi so they thought within the context it was the bezoar, not knowing what a bezoar is lol.

The LN and manga make it clearer that the granny tells Lakan that Fengxian died, not just that "she's gone." Lakan's reunion with Fengxian makes me cry. And I'm not a crier. I'm so glad they got a little bit of happiness, however bittersweet it is with Fengxian being terminal.

With this episode, it was clear who had the most resentment for Lakan, it was the old lady.... she was the one who blocked Lakan from knowing that her woman was alive, she was the one that hit him saying he ruined her life (and also almost ruined the brothel), but Lakan was completely innocent, the old lady was "guilty" but it was out of spite of she thought Lakan did, same with MaoMao's mom, she thought Lakan abandon her. In the end, Lakan get her Lady for as few time she has left, but she is in a semivegetative state, otherwise there would have been a more intense reaction... but Lakan swallow up all that, and said "give me my woman", and in the future if MaoMao's in trouble not only Jinshi will try to protect her, but Lakan will also involve (i had read that he ordered for the guard that hit MaoMao to be executed, but MaoMao interceded for him).
It's been implied that the hag tried her best to hid Fonshen (Maomao's mum) and her all-about from the world (including to Rakan and Maomao) out of 'love' because she wanted to protect Fonshen's pride, since Fonshen was known for her enermous ego and pride. It was the least she could do for her mentally damaged daughter (Yup, the hag is Maomao's actual grandmother).

Maomao’s dance scene absolutely STUNNING in every way, I was speechless watching it… and she looked so gorgeous in that dress too. Kudos to the animators for animating that wonderful dance!
In case someone hasn't said. The severing of the fingers was a curse telling him she's severed their red string of fate. He'd never find his destined soulmate (and daughter) throughout this lifetime and the next. Supposedly there is a god whose main purpose is to tie people together and they are tied by their left pinky fingers. ( don't quote me it might be the right). Some myths just have the string tied to anything. Dramatic license.
Mei Mei was not bought out, Fengxian Mao Mao's mother was. Mei Mei retired, the send off was why Mao Mao danced. Also, both Fengxian and Lakan were excellent strategists, the pregnancy was planned by Fengxian. However, at the same time the whole debacle of the Emperor's two sons happened and Mao Mao's adoptive father - Lakan's Uncle - was ripped of his status. Therefore Lakan was forced to go to the frontlines in the war.
Lakan thought Fengxian was angry at him because she never answered a single letter he had written to her in his absence. Granny is the real villain here. She's Fengxians mother. So the fact that she forced Fengxian to the streets and out of the brothel, and then kept Fengxian from her only means of connecting to Lakan is what drove her daughter to go crazy - that and the std. All Granny actually cares about is money, something Mao Mao never fogets since she was meant to be sold later in her mothers place. Granny must have heard of Lakan's status constantly being elevated and panicked. Remember, even the Emperor is careful around him and doesn't want him as an enemy.
Had Lakan found out sooner what Granny was scheming, he could have easily taken her and her brothel down. The only thing saving Granny was the fact that she was the one with the information on Fengxian's location. This effectively kept Lakan in check.
So again, Granny is the real pos here. She even still milked Lakan of money for Fengxian and will sell Mao Mao again if given the chance. Let's not forget that
So Granny needs her "come uppings"! Lakan should put the fear in her at least, she's the one who made everything worse.

I get that technically in their eyes Fengxian sullied their brothels reputation by getting pregnant and that courtesan's don't usually see themselves as mothers to their children but the fact she still sent her pregnant daughter out there onto the streets to the dangers of both assault and disease is pretty unforgivable especially after keeping Lakan from seeing Fengxian earlier and also Luomen to an extent who couldv'e treated Fengxian before things got so bad. In *ch 37* and *ch 39* of the manga, it gives more context of why Maomao has an odd relationship with her dad. The anime didn't have some parts, so it gives a better explanation for why she dislikes him from how she saw him as a child and she doesn't want him to replace Luomen as her father.

Maomao trolling Jinshi at the end and the ensuing headbutt was gold. One fact that may have been missed is that Lakan's uncle is implied to be Maomao's current adopted father. It's not shown outright but when putting in the pieces together, it does imply that he was Lakan's uncle and he was the one who taught Lakan how to recognize people with this condition. And in ancient Chinese dynasties, the people who are closest to the emperor in his court tend to be from noble families. So, technically, Maomao's current adopted father, Luomen is most likely her grand-uncle.
As Maomao said with her mama, "Women are clever" and she baited that boy Jinshi for her ox bezoar. 🤣

Children's fingers can apparently regrow as long as it's the tip. But that's also why Maomao's pinky regrew but it's now crooked. Also from the LN, Lakan thinks he was at fault for being impulsive during that night he slept with Fengxian, so even though she was the one that tricked him he still thinks it's his fault for letting it happen 😔 so for 15 years he thought it was his fault he lost both her and Maomao and that's why he's always come back to the Verdigris House to buy Maomao but she always evaded him lol (there's a reason why but maybe they'll say in the 2nd season so please look forward to it )
I think her evading him could be due to fact, she is the product of the reason why the House almost went bankrupt, she hears rumours all the time about her and her mum. Her mum hates her for destroying her pride and the reason she's in that situation (even though that's on her), and you've got some creepy guy coming round all the time saying you're his daughter and trying to buy you out, a good case to avoid him.
I'll be honest, I had to look it up if the tip of Maomao's finger got cut off as a baby, or if it was just another chunk her mom cut off herself to make it look like it was a baby's finger. I don't know how much of a fingertip was actually cut off, but from personal experience, yeah, it'll grow back if it's not too much. Be careful with deli slicers, everyone.
I do remember Maomao looking at her left hand's pinky quite a number of times, usually when she was lost in thought - it makes a lot more.
But back in the 1970s, scientists showed that children can sometimes regrow the tip of an amputated finger, as long as there's a bit of nail left over and the wound isn't stitched up.

In Lakan's flashback, it shows you that the old lady (forgot her name) told him that she passed away which was an excuse to get him away from the brothel and Lakan had more days than what he expected. So, in retrospect, Lakan thought the only woman who he's comfortable with passed away.

Of course, this episode also makes it clear that in her heart, Maomao is about as far from a noble as you can get. Ill-suited to courtesan work though she may be, she is a child of Verdigris House, and wherever her life takes her, I think part of her will always think of it as home.

So does Meimei, as she only close with Rakan, aside from her job, because she was curious about the man who made Fonshen destroyed herself. You can say that she is their biggest shipper.

When you already know about the fingertip on a rewatch, it gets pointed out many times with Meimei looking at it. And much of the media more fully tells us how it got cut off and grew back crooked.
The tip of the finger got cut off, i once accidentally cut the tip of my pointer finger off when i was using a mandalin making potato chips. My finger tip grew back but you can tell where cuz it’s discolored like lighter than my actual skin. But im okay everything is fine. This was a freaking tear jerker. After I watched it a few times, I realized that the story's first intro was most likely from Lakan's perspective. Adoring a flower bulb that grows out beside a wall (of the red district) letting it grow and try not to be notice by others. To him, he didn't care if it ever bloom as he loved it regardless. No material or ornaments is worthy of accompanying it as it itself is unparalleled in value to him. Yet when it blooms it became the poison that strangely becomes the one medicine that helps cure him after being poisoned by the beauty (of her mother's) allure that he drank that night.

I love that Lakan sees Fengxian the way he does. Despite her illness. And she recognized him after so long, all he had to do was grab her hand and ask her to play Go.
At the end, those were still the same cordyceps that Maomao got from Jinshi earlier. A bezoar looks nothing like that lol, it's more of a round ball-ish shape.

I would say Lakan is the author teaching readers the lesson for Luomen's "Don't speak based on conjecture." We were never shown any examples or evidence of Lakan being scum or malicious, we the audience just assumed he was based on a small amount of detail.
But that’s how storytelling works. You’re supposed to use subtlety, literary techniques, and direction to learn about the characters and know what they are about without anyone blatantly telling you. I guess there’s a lesson of not everything is how it appears, but it kinda feels like cheating. XD
Everyone was at fault here. Yes it was a tragedy and Fengxian clapped herself by not being honest with Lakan but everyone’s so happy to hate on her and the old lady just because Lakan cried the most. Women with their experience have tons of reasons not to trust the men in their lives, remember the customer from the other brothel who was poisoned? Man disappeared for three years then expected them to just give him his daughter when he showed up cos he cried and said he was sorry? It was Fengxian who nearly wrecked the brothel, but the old lady had no way of knowing Lakan wouldn’t just abandon her again when he saw what happened to her.
Lakan knew where Maomao was and instead of sending her money or some other means of support he let her grow up poor and get kidnapped. And there are some things about his family history that, even if he had succeeded in taking her away as a child, she wouldn’t be safe in the family house anyway.
I agree with Maomao. Those people have a beautiful, tragic love story and I cried when they got back together, but they’re not her parents. She has a lovely adoptive dad, a wonderful set of big sisters and hopefully a bright future at the palace, on her own merit.
So to explain a few things.
Lakan was told MaoMao's mom was dead that's what the old lady meant by, "shes gone"
Secondly they made a show to make it seem like MeiMei was being bought out but it was a cover for MaoMao's mom getting bought since she cant go out in public due to her syphilis and they wanted the celebration.
And finally Humans are amazing things, You're constantly regenerating cells to the point, When you're young, you're basically getting a new body every seven years. Ever got a nasty Cut or something like that as a kid and now there isn't even a scar?
Maomao had the tip of little finger cut off but because it was such a small piece and she was so young it grew back and healed over her life.
Poor Lakan. When Granny told him Fengxian was "gone", he thought she was dead. That's why he focused so much on Maomao, as he thought she was all he had left of her. And when he finally finds out, it's almost too late. She's not long for this world, given the late stages of her disease.

About the finger, it's not commonly known since it's a little messed up, but when a baby is first born, they retain a bit of their ability to sprout body parts. Nothing crazy, but a fingertip is well within the realm of being able to regrow if the infant is young enough. That's kinda where the whole stem cell thing comes from. As one is developing in the womb, you get a bunch of "unassigned" cells that would in this case take up the identity of "we are now a fingertip". I apologize if that wasn't a proper explanation.
I always thought Fengxian was the one who didn't want Lakan or Maomao to see her because she's too prideful for them to see her in her diseased and deformed condition (if I'm not mistaken she lost her nose to the disease). I think that's why they never told Lakan about her. Maybe they also think there's no way he still wants her at this point.

Not so fun fact: The mom was actually dead in the original Web Novel. It makes wonder if the reason the author had the Granny tell Lakan “she’s gone” was to keep the rest of the background story from changing too much (basically not giving MaoMao a somewhat happier life)
Yes it all grows back a little before the wound closes and settles, so if its just the tip it will basically all grow back, though it feels less sensitive to touch still. Maybe if you're just a baby when that happens you wont even notice it.

This season took my breath away. I did not think I could develop sympathy for Lakan. He was not a villain but I did think he was a deeply morally flawed. The finale exploded that view and really revealed the tragedy that many contributed towards and Lakan’s real feeling for Fengxian.

12:35 It was this Courtesan pregnancy part which was the trigger for me on doubting the whole plot relating to Maomao and her Dad (when i read the Manga).
While the Author did try to present Lakan as the evil guy who supposedly forcefully impregnated Maomao's mother.
But that is a weird point in itself (which was actually the hint from the Author). I mean, Maomao's mother was a Courtesan, and in general majority of Courtesan do pleasure work, and considering there is no mention of stuff like condom, suggest they do it raw. And that would mean that they had to have methods to avoid unwanted pregnancy or abortion already (or else, the pleasure district and the brothels would be filled with children of the Courtesans).
So, making the whole aspect of "reducing price by getting said Courtesan pregnant" seems a bit farfetched (even if done forcefully), unless the Courtesan herself wanted to bare a child or was extremely unlucky.

I think maomao mom plotted out of love because they shared such commonalities but he couldnt afford her and others were consonstantly bidding. MM mom’s apprentice at the time was MeiMei and when he finally got to MM’s mom Meimei said “if this is what you wanted along you should have been more honest, sister” or something like that. Which i take as if she shared the plan with him it wouldnt have turned out the way it did. At the beginning Lakan decribes her as prideful which is a trait we can see MM show as well espiecally when it comes to the class divide amongst the ppl in her life. So i think her mom was the same. She loved Lakan but knew her place as a courtesan and him from a distinguished family. She didnt wanna beg or be emotional cause he himself comes off as a practical dude. So MM’s mom comes up with this plot to get the man she loves to buy her out so if it worked out she would have secured a marriage/buy out because he would take responsibilty as the one who ruined her but also he could afford to take responsibility cause her price woulda went down. Its a good show. I started reading the manga and it really starts gettin into it. Cant wait for season 2

So now I am adding this anime for as one of my AOTY nominees this year, same goes with Frieren.
My interpretation of the mom's actions is that she wanted a baby for a long time but never found someone she wanted to have a child with. She was prideful after-all. Then she met Lakan and slowly fell in love with him. Her desire for a child became both her "secret" desire and a way to be with the person she loved. They had their night together on the day she knew she would most likely conceive but Lakan is shipped off after saying he wouldn't be able to visit until another 3 months.
We know how that went.
I think what broke her wasn't the waiting but how much her plan blew up into flames. She had so much pride but found love and a way to be the person she loved even at the risk of her whole world going up in flames at the prospect of failure. She takes that risk and what does she get in return? Nothing. Yes, she had the child she always desired, but she could've played the long game, would've played the long game, to become some high official's concubine and then have a child but she found love and wanted Lakan. Who never came back, sent a letter, anything. Her value in her world became rock-bottom, her pride had no basis, to live she had to become a streetwalker when she would never have been touched for years until she was bought out. I don't doubt that to her even if she knew that she had to "work" to live, and was raised in that culture, it felt like no less than r*** at first before she sunk into her depressing new normal. If not regarding her body but of her ideals, her pride, of who she saw herself as. Then she gets sick with a deadly disease that ruins her body and causes her growing-immense pain, and she still had to work. Literally torture of the body and the mind. "That nightmare" as Maomao remembered it was probably her snapping point and was probably done when Maomao was a toddler.
I wish Maomao got to have a mom, I wish Fengxian got her happy ever after with Lakan [the one she risked everything for] but that's not this story.
I can’t see Fengxian as having any desire for a child for its own sake. She chopped a damn fingertip off, and Maomao speaks of being hatefully chased out of the sickroom in later years. I’m not seeing any evidence Maomao meant anything more than a way to abort the bidding war so the man she actually wanted could afford to buy her out.
Fonshen fell in love with Rakan, as she saw him as the only human being able to compete with her. She only kept her baby as a tool to make Rakan willing to buy her, while also lowering her price. She's the embodiment of icy queen full of ego and pride, that's why when the one plan she treaded so carefully failed, it also took her sanity away. While I think Maomao was wrong for treating Rakan that way, Fonshen was never a mother to Maomao, and even saw her as her source of curse and burden.

She knew she was a bit strict and unfair towards Rakan, but the fact that she let him know her mother is still alive is basically a love letter to her father. This father-daughter duo is weird one.
