I got the original set back in 1989 and it's always been one of my favorites. I got the new one this year and love it too. But I feel like I'm the only one who actually prefers the new crane. I think it's a decently executed version of the type of large cargo crane of the era, and it was a fun and interesting build. When I was getting sets in the 1980s I never liked the loose strings for cranes and drawbridges and I always prefered when Lego provided an actual winch with a set.
