  • Ian Heaps is a winner. From dominating on the Trent, to running a commercial fishery, everything the diminutive Northener has touched has turned to gold.
His finest moment was in September 1975, when he became World Champion on his England debut on Poland's Bydgoszcz Canal. His 22lb 8oz set a record for what was then a three-hour match.
Ian now runs a fishery and angling coaching school in West Wales, and is as happy as he's ever been. We caught up with him to find out more about his action-packed life in angling.

A legend... Growing up as a kid a face I always remember in the angling press. After watching this, I could sit and listen to his stories all day long.

One of my angling heroes when I was wee. Ivan being the other. By coincidence I believe Ian's missus grew up along the road from me.

Was fortunate enough to do a tutorial day in the mid 90s with Ian in North York's. I learned more in 1 day than I had in years, an absolute gent and a fantastic teacher and angler. I could listen to him talk for hours.

Ian Heaps is my all time hero. I remember going to one of his roadshows at Hetton Comrades club. I won a catapult and I was over the moon to shake hands with a great man.

You can't beat these old boys , to know you've just won the world championship must be one of the best feelings a match man could experience... I can remember the pictures of Dave Thomas fishing at a world champs and the crowd watching him was like a football crowd on the opposite bank ,. The nerves must of been jangling for our boys back then with crowds like that.

I saw this top class angler on a local venue of mine. The guy could put maggots around a waggler at distance and i mean around a waggler. The bites the guy was getting was of the slightest dip on the float you could not see yourself but he could unbelievable . I remember as a kid seeing him on telly fish with poles when they first came onto the circuit.. Top top angler i wish you well mr heaps.

I saw Ian , late 70s road show at Lancil sports and social club in Lancaster. Someone asked him the question what method would you use on our own water the river lune. He said to be frank I wouldnt fish it, its to hard to find the fish. He was so right, there were huge roach and bream in the river then, but finding them was another matter!
