5 Major Reasons Religion Is the No.1 Cause of Poverty in Africa | Rev Walter Mwambazi | TEDxLusaka

  • One of the greatest enigmas of our time that begs an explanation is how a continent endowed with so much wealth and resources (human, food, mineral and land) can be so poor as to have 16 of the 20 poorest nations on earth. Hard discussions on this perennial African development question are ignited by Rev Walter in this talk, where he suggests that religion and its cascading effects is the biggest obstacle to development. He also proposes a solution to how Africans can free themselves from religious slavery! Reverend Walter Mwambazi is chiefly a thought transformation leader, but he is also a networker, digital & traditional marketer, published author, newspaper columnist, blogger, neural-linguistic and cognitive enhancement coach, radio & television personality and a social influencer. Before all this, he was an ordained and in-service minister for 5 years. Reverend Walter is married with 3 children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So God is the one that asked People to be cheating on each other, you mean? God told us to be honest, and kind to one another, but anyone leads your Country, the first plan, is to take all the riches of the Country, and put it in foreign banks for his own use, and care less about the Citizens of your Country. Church or Mosq will never advice you to do the wrong thing, which will harm others. The problem in Africa, some leaders are greed, to the extend that, they will never think about thir Citizens, nor the bring improvements for anyone to be close to them. Don blame God, cuz God created us, and give us brain, to decide what to do. Good, or bad. If the leader is not correct, just thinking about himself, how can the Country go forward?
If everyone follow what God advices us, no one will suffer, in the entire world. Read the Bible, or the Quran, and see if it's asked you to harm others.

That's how all fake democracies functions especially US and Canada!! If your countries resources are privatized then citizens of that country are democratic Slaves!

@@jp2650 OP said religion causes blindness, not that it makes countries "unsuccessful", as if those two things are contradictory..
China is powerful and successful by many standards, but they're not religious AND their people are blinded by propaganda. None of these things are necessarily contradictory unless you define success by quality of life, and that somehow measures ability of citizens to acquire information and formulate informed opinions..
I know examples cant prove a hypothesis, but for a taste of the censorship and spirit of religion towards the advancement of knowledge just look at Galileo or Darwin.. If you think that religion serves to inform people and doesn't have an inherent interest in keeping people uneducated and impoverished, praying for miracles and paying their tithes rather than paying for what they actually need to improve their situations then I don't know what to tell you except that I hope your worldview serves you well.

From the power of colonialism which gave us identity which molds us to someone we are not supposed to be to the power of God to whom we belong. I am angry with our educational system sealed by religions but there's no time to blame but to find for solutions for this reason we are born.

I disengaged from the catholic church from around 1990 after I studied Economics, African History and Geography because I immediately started to realise that something was wrong. Questions like : Why are Africans and blacks who have prayed for over 200 years not progressing and nothing good has changed in their favour? Although African leaders are to blame for not developing their countries, the Global Economic Structure does not, has not, and will never promote the development of African countries? Why are African countries still poor? Economics does not answer this, because it blindfolds its readers to believe so deeeply in the economic models that do not work for Africa. The answer to knowing the truth lies in International Political Economy which I have studied and researched on. Japanese, South Koreans, Singaporeans and Chinese don’t follow white Jesus, but just look at the level of development they have achieved. African christians waste two days (saturdays and sundays) every week to pray, while the Southeast Asian countries that I mentioned, use these two days to work, produce, acquire and create wealth. 👹👹😬😬.

Over 50 years ago i was told by a teacher that understanding is not synonymous with faith'. It was a respectful effort by the teacher to deal with his frustration of attempting to answer my 'why' type questions for which he had no answers to. As I fast approach my graduation to being an 'old man' I now consider that people resort to faithing or believing when they do not understand. This faithing is an attempt to address the failure to understand and is also a response in the absence of actual knowledge/information. The unfortunate outcome of this believing is that the resultant beliefs are treated as 'facts', which in turn become dogma. This dogma is codified as canonical and must not be questioned. So to believe or to engage in faithing requires the person to suspend or pause for a lifetime their natural tendency for curiosity and questioning. It is the rationale and framework of all religions. So I adopted this proverb as my personal understanding: 'Ubi dubium ibi libertas', translated as: 'where there is doubt there is freedom'.

I'm talking about lands beyond the central province in the rift valley and coast for instance. We condemn all forms of Colonialism both White, Arab and African. The Agikuyu might have suffered under Colonialism but they have also been the beneficiary of Colonialism. Let's learn the whole history and not confine ourselves to European colonialsm alone.
