What a wonderful story showing Starfleet officers as regular human beings struggling with their purpose in life as opposed to idealized heroes who usually have it together.
Man... The pain on Lance's face as he struggled with his decision, and when he made the choice to forego rescue. You could *feel* how much it hurt him -- well done, Chuck. I know Starfleet has a directive about answering all distress calls when able, but that dang Prime Directive got in the way because the shuttle came from a pre-warp civilization. Yet I cannot also help being SO FREAKING EXCITED to hear my own voice at 10:35 and 10:45, and also seeing my name in the credits as "Helm Officer"! Was so freaking stoked when Josh asked me if I'd be interested in recording a couple of lines. So thankful for even a little opportunity to be in a Trek fan film. Josh was cool enough to ask because he knows how much I love Avalon Universe!
I like how, instead of just launching into a conversation about life and command, it starts with the engineer bitching about someone else. Great touch, great writing.
Another Crowning Achievement of the Avalon Universe. To Mr. Mere & Mr. Major, Tremendous Acting & Storytelling in True Star Trek Fashion. To Mr. Irwin, Excellent Production & Direction in True Star Trek Tradition. Continue The Outstanding Work. May You All Continue to LIVE LONG & PROSPER.
I’ve missed not seeing Ramirez, so I am glad he was given an ending. That said, it is interesting he and Beck vanished, which could mean…anything. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Good job!
Awesome job! Josh, Vance, Chuck and team! I love how you span this universe so well! Action, comedy, and this somber tear-jerker! The heroism of sacrifice. Excellent through and through.
More excellence. Thank you Avalon Universe! One of the many things I like about Captain Lance Ramirez is how he reminds me of the one and only Captain Pike as portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter. Great stuff.
@@joshuairwin2016 I love this series. I've seen all of them easily over 4-5 times. The characters really are the best. Excellently done everyone and the dialogue between Minard and Ramirez was some of the best I've heard in a fan film. A very touching story showing the pitfalls of being in command of starship and honoring the duties that come with it. Beatifically done.

Wonderful job by everyone involved. The story has real weight, real gravitas. It's a shame that Ramirez appears to be gone--I enjoy the character and the actor both.
Excellently written, produced and the actors and actresses where all out standing truely brought each character to life in more then one way . Truely felt like I was right next to each one. Each one continues to deprive me a great day. Ya’ll have done nothing but perfection in my eyes. Keep up the great works of art ya’ll continue to put out. To each of ya take care and stay safe out their. Once again thank you all for a job well done.
Bravo. What a touching exploration of the burdens that accompany the privilege of such rank. The portrayal of those deeply-human emotions of painful regret against the demands of duty was beautifully done. It's those moments that make stories such as this so very real, and so easily identifiable with our lives. Well done.
In TOS I'm sure Captain Kirk and his crew would've found a way to save them. The transporter has unique properties, especially in keeping them buffered without contact from the rest of the crew. I know life doesn't have happy endings but life is life and deserves to strive not take away.
1:35 - 1:36 on the lower half there is some error or smear for just a moment, almost directly below the ship near the bottom. Just pointing it out so if you decide to clean up any errors in the future.
Great story! You two held out attention with your conversation for EIGHT minutes! However, the non-interference policy would be exempted if he had directly beamed them to sick bay and anesthetized them, then returned them to their planet, or discretely repaired their ship (even if that era starship did not have transporter to sick bay function, they could quickly tranquilize them right as they materialized on the transporter pads, as their short term memory would not recall the transport). As long as their (Valiant's) tracks were covered, no one would be the wiser. But I get it, and then the poignancy of the situation and decision would be lost and the story diminished.
The slight quirkiness of Ramirez combined with his humanity (to a fault) is what made him SO endearing to me. It was great to see him have his final hurrah. I hold out hope that secretly, maybe there will be a cameo in the multiverse film coming up soon.
I've visited this studio in Kingsland Ga. (Neutral Zone) twice and it's an amazing place to see. I encourage you to visit and please donate what you can to keep the lights on.
Ahh lawwwd , I been court martialed cause I’d prob weave those people , scanned them an wore there type clothes an blindfolded them till I got them safe air an there environment stable but that’s just me an the captain was so torn on what he he wanted to do , surexhate he went missing in 2271
Me too. I would have dropped air and supplies to them. Which would have left them wondering who did it and thus contaminated their culture with knowledge of advanced aliens. Dereliction of duty for a Starfleet officer. I guess I would have reacted like Captain Tracy of the Exeter watching the Coms being defeated by the Yangs.
Two friends having an intimate conversation over open comms???? It would have been more intimate to have them together. Perhaps a better fitting uniform shirt for the captain as well. An interesting character study to be sure.
This was filmed during the height of Covid Lockdowns in 2020. Having the actors together was impossible. The film was purposely written this way to be something we could do during Covid. It wasn’t “open comms” there are secure channels in Stafleet. The Tunic the actor wore was the only one available at the studio on the day of filming.
It wasn’t meant as an insult but constructive criticism. It was clear they were both on the same starship so having the actors together would have made more sense. The COVID issues certainly make the choices more understandable.
I loved the episode, as it deals with the hardest part of having a "Prime Directive" But an event like that would be a big reason why someone would want to step down as Captain. If this were "real", he would be plagued by nightmares for the rest of his life, knowing that those men did not need to die, simply for our principles to be upheld. By saving them, they can never go home, and the Captain likely gets a court marshal, but he could sleep at night, knowing he did all that he could do, to help strangers. It might turn out to be the best decision he ever makes in his life. As Warf once said, "There are always options"
Even saving the two astronauts and never letting them go home afterwards, so as to avoid cultural contamination, would affect the development of their society. What happens when their society sends another shuttle to investigate the loss of the first one, and discovers that there are no bodies aboard it? Imagine the alien abduction conspiracy theories that could result from such an inexplicable event, and how such theories could affect the society’s views towards alien cultures.
I am just not happy that this means Commander Beck won't be coming back unless she does but there is no prospect of that now. I didn't much care for this guy though. About the only reason for me to watch this specific film was Minard.
I wish I could give you good news on that. She's talked about the possibility of doing her own film that would be a resolution for her character. I would love to see her do that and left the character's fate open ended so she can. Unfortunately, we had creative differences on the future vision of the project. But I wish her great success.
@@joshuairwin2016 Ah well, I didn't expect a response so thank you very much. Don't get me wrong, Captain Ramirez is a well written character he just isn't quite the main Captain I was set on. If a captain relinquishes command because of major uncertainty, they shouldn't have accepted command of a ship.
He made the wrong choice, when you chose regulations over humanity you will always lose and make the wrong choice.
