Raza is quickly becoming one of my most fav ships in any sci-fi shows i have seen, and i have seen most. It is such a good design, something that humanity might be capable of making at some point
Whatever it's base class is, comparing it to the Raza is like comparing a stock YT-1300 with the Millenium Falcon. It's basically a corporate "Black Ops" ship. Looks harmless and innocent until it unloads on you.
dark matter is an awesome show with a really good story. also the 3rd season is already 3 episodes in. also how can both of you be sci fi fans and not watch all sci fi shows? dark matter and killjoys are very very well written shows. thanks for taking the time to do all these commentary's
It should be remembered that the Raza was stolen from the Galactic Alliance. This is a military cargo transport and includes cryogenic sleep pods. Bottom line is that its basically a c-5 Galaxy combined with an AC-130J with nantes, ftl and a pack of badass crew members.
Dark Matter is pretty slow burn in season 1 but really gets going in season 2. During season 2 they get an upgrade to the ship called a "Blink Drive" which allows them to instantaneously transport to anywhere in the galaxy, rather than using FTL which requires fuel. In regards to the flight deck in the back of the ship, they do steal a shuttle at the beginning of season 2 (though the shuttle is never shown) so I'm guessing that's where they park it when they get back to the Raza. Season 1 is on Netflix and season 2 just hit DVD.
Reminds me of a cocktail mix from the Aliens UD-4L Cheyenne Dropship, Halo's Pelican Dropship and of course, the Prometheus vessel from the Prometheus movie. Cool looking ship that Razza for a decent sci-fi show! Especially love that blink drive! Season 3 is now on air!
I think the top deck in those plans those are stasis pods so 22 berths, in the final version of the ship it doesn't have that much space dedicated to cryo bays. Also in the final textured version of the ship that rear landing pad isn't flat like a helipad but actually has two berths with possible recessed airlocks. This kinda melds with the action of the show which often has the hostiles enter through airlocks at the rear of the top deck and make their way to the front attempting to take the bridge along two parallel corridors. While the plans show four decks I think weve mainly only seen the top deck and a separate area for living quarters then the main cargo holds. There isn't any indication of the rooms and rooms of machinery in those plans as the only tech room weve seen is similar to the double height engineering rooms with warp core like central tube either side of the engines in the plans. Going off memory the top deck has the single deck flat bridge rather than the one shown in those deck plans, med bay, mess hall, cryo bay and a small rear cargo hold for crew supplies, (along with some machinery rooms?) served by one wide central corridor and two narrower parallel corridors which converge on the bridge. second deck has airlock to the rear of the shuttle which mates horizontally at deck floor level rather than being a gangway through a hanger, officers quarters (or they could be off the smaller corridors on the top deck, I think its one of those situations where the producers don't want to feature crew members riding an elevator so they just turn a corner and are magically up or down a level) and, if there is another crew deck featuring bunk beds and more machinery rooms we haven't seen it on screen, then the final deck has the main cargo holds including one containing the armoured vault.
I loved this episode! Great to see the Raza next to ships from other franchises. I didn't realize it was that big. (Also, I agree with Stuart in that it kinda looks like the dropship from Alien. It has a similar muscular look.)
having pelican type larger ships would be interesting to see for the UNSC. i could see them in the role of heavy transports and in the roles of our modern cutters, corvettes and frigates in which they serve a support function to the larger capital ships. as they stand now thy make a useful drop ship/ gun ship and can carry light loads to resupply areas. that being said i would also like to see a freight specific pelican type where the passenger bay is removed to support shipping crates.
Its a heavily automated ship that has nano repair bots and can be operated entirely by one android. That's why the small crew. Though to be fair they've upgraded the ships weapons and shields so much that it generally can beat warships one on one.
An interesting bit of dialogue from the show stated that without the Android the crew wouldn't be able to maintain or operate the vessel properly. The Android can connect to the ship's systems and control various ship functions and auto repair systems.
the Falcon was a cargo transporter. It was like a souped up trucker cab. It normally would have had a huge freight of cargo inf ront of it, hence the cockpit on the side.
For Cap. Foley - It's great to have returning viewers to a show... viewers like you are how great shows continue on and really build a fanbase (says sarcastically). No disrespect but you can't say you've seen a few episodes of a show and not recall the main ship. They are literally living and onboard the ship like 85% of the show. It's like watching ST and don't recall seeing the Enterprise. For future TV shows, you're better off saying that you've seen a few episodes but you don't remember the show itself.
Sadly, Syfy just cancelled this series. There is a campaign going to try and get another network or Netflix to pick it up, check out Joe Mallozzis blog for more info.
Great episode! I hope that if there's a positive aspect of SARS-CoV-2, the cast and crew of Dark Matter may find their schedules and contracts opened up a bit enough to make a Season 4-6 exploration seem tantalizing. I felt the S3 near the end was treading on Expanse, amd thst somebody got lissed and threatened the DM production. Some say it was rsti gs, but, I suspect more. I think DM was jusssst hitting its stried in S3, and when it was capriciously killed off, I felt angeyand devastated. If there's funding, the show almost certainly ckuld be brought back, tho, all those sets reportedly were steuck and sold off or demolished. I especially want to see more of Android, Two, and some of the villains get more exposition on matter that was dangled.Great episode! I hope that if there's a positive aspect of SARS-CoV-2, the cast and crew of Dark Matter may find their schedules and contracts opened up a bit enough to make a Season 4-6 exploration seem tantalizing. I felt that S3 near the end was probably IP-wise treading on Expanse, and that somebody got pissed off and threatened the DM production. Some say it was ratings, but, I suspect more. In any case, sci-fi covers all sorts of things, whether or not alien life or human-made consteucts are out there, nearby, or even pose a threat to humans. I think DM was jusssst hitting its stride in S3, and so when it was capriciously killed off, I felt angry and devastated. At a minimum... If there's sufficient funding, the show almost certainly could be brought back, tho, all those sets reportedly were struck and sold off or demolished. If only a few millionaires with disposable cash/in-kind offering also happen to be DM fans (old or reeled in) and feel like jumpstarting a re-launched/resumed DM.... Well, one can imagine. I especially want to see more of Android, Two, and some of the villains get more exposition on matter that was dangled.
I never got the scale until they did a couple of space walk scenes. It is a rather large and impressive ship. The elude to the reputation of the ship in the series and from what I gathered it can kick some ass.
They never show it but later in the show they have an Ishida shuttle as well as the marauder that "flight deck" from the side view is the showing up that on the deck layouts.
I'm surprised by how big Raza is. Even seeing the inside of the cargo bay in episode one, I thought it was only a little bigger than Serenity. I really didn't expect Raza to be nearly the size of a Constitution class cruiser.
the Raza is my favorite ship - best drive, android who can fly the ship on its own so no crew required, a small combat ship that can cloak and land easily on planets... what you want more :) needless to say it looks cool but wait when I remember correctly it was instant once the drive was fixed... before it wasn't fully functional... pretty sure... have something like blink drive in my head where they could finally appear everywhere in space instantly like the spore drive in star trek... well after they fixed the drive :P
The Raza is actually a former Galactic Authority Destroyer since transports aren't that heavily armored or even that heavily armed either. And the Raza is capable of planetary landings.
The Raza always gives me the impression it’s a military assault transport. It’s very heavily armored, fast, maneuverable, and seems to be designed to drop troops and equipment on to planets. It’s weapon systems seem to be more self defense than offensive. Quite love the design, to be honest. Dark Matter is the best sci-fi show on, at the moment, and definitely the best show since Firefly.
I thought it was smaller too, but the size makes sense. It's in a universe for galactic corporations run the show, and they function as governments. Looking at how huge cargo ships are now it would make sense to have giant cargo ships. In comparison, Trek has a lot of private cargo ships. They function independently, and for some, to have a ship they have to purchase it on their own.
I wouldn't be concerned about the small crew since it is a cargo ship. If you think of contemporary super cargo container ships that are often around 300 metres but often have a crew of less than 20. As opposed to an aircraft carrier of similar size would have hundreds of crewmen. So that works out for me. I am interested in giving this show a look after hearing a bit about it and seeing this interesting design!
Its very bland. The writing is very poor. But the acting is ok. I watch it, but just because I watch anything that has sci-fi on it. Its sister show: "Killjoys" is a bit better.
Heh. The two shows premiered at the same time and I only had time to watch one - the consensus from critics was that Killjoys was the better of the two so I watched that one. Though I've kind of given up on it. Stopped watching a few eps into season 2. Has it gotten any better?
With the Blink Drive, it was the Fastest Ship ever. Anywhere in the Galaxy… Instantly? How could you not discuss that? The Captain was capable of going into Space without a suit (amongst other things) and the Android was capable of operating the Ship with no human management or assistance- That really puts the Raza in a class all her own. Also, there definitely WERE aliens. That was right where it got canned- It was never resolved.
you had you num bers or quarters wrong. there is an episode where they have an additional six people and they had enough space to put them all on the same floor where as the crew does not keep there quarters on the same floor. or section of the ship. so there is a minimum of 12 quarters confirmed. and up to 36 if you assume that you can have 6 per area and each crew member we know is in a different are then we can assume that there is at least 36 crew quarters
dark matter is a awesome show and i really like the ships design...but to be honest to me it does not really say "corporation cargo ship" with all its armament, amore and all the other tech gadgets is says more like "military assault transport"...you know a ship that the navy usually uses to put down groundtroops or heavy equipment on a planet or moon under fire, something like that...but dont ask me how the crew got their hands on it :)
standaard crew is more then 6, the reason that the robot control the ship because the people on the ship are not enough to control the ship manual. it has fdl and blink drive. its normal use for troop transport. but it used by mercs. thats why there is only six crew
Great discussion on the Raza. Dark Matter is a great show. Just a shame SYFY have pulled the plug and cancelled the show but hopefully it gets picked up elsewhere.
Great job as always guys. I love Dark Matter. I hope a scale model of this ship comes out. Btw, can I make a request for the Aliens dropship and Blade Runner police spinner?
Could Trekyards do a Fleetyards episode with either the Skaal Tel Taiidan capital class destroyer or the Hiigaran Mothership 'Pride of Hiigara' both ships from the Homeworld series of games? That would be amazing!
i'm reminded of today's supertankers.enormous room for cargo and bare bones for the crew. I would think the freighters would dwarf military ships who patrol the space lanes.
Corporate-built freighters probably do. The Raza is a bit smaller than Ferrous Corp and Mikkei Combine destroyers, which implies that there are larger capital ships out there. If we compare with 20th Century seafaring ships, with destroyers being the baseline, the Raza would be about the size of a frigate or coastal transport ship. When WWII started, commercial cargo ships were being pressed into service as cruisers and battleships with whatever armor and weapons could be mounted at short notice, so in Dark Matter most star freighters would be about 12 to 15 times the size of the corporate destroyers in terms of volume. However, in space there is no need to worry about construction restraints like displacement, so the corporations would probably try to fit as much cargo in each ship as possible as long as the FTL drives could handle the exponentially greater mass. For regular, non-sensitive transport, I could see them fielding ships that could fit 30 or 40 Razas comfortably for the price of minimal sublight maneuverability and lack of armor.
Some real-world PanaMax and Post-PanaMax and beyond containerships have saunas (not saying jacuzzi or swimming pools) and possibly wading pools. (A FAR CRY from the 90s and earlier...) Some shops may have as few as ~12, but, IIRC, they need ~25-45, depending on size, work content, allowances for non-deferrable maintenance needed at sea, and number of containers to be dealt with by the crew, not just the ashore stevedores/others. They also have laundry facilities, large shared messing, a library, internet (SatCom) terminals, cable TV, and ao on. More modern ones have a max of 2 personnel to sometimes 3 or 4 oer cabin. Senior mates/upper level officers have their own staterooms. Some have a whole separate cabin for the ship's actual HQ/corporate owner. Many crews can be a mix of 5-8 nationalities, even though the ship may be flagged in the Central Americas for flag of convenience reasons (labor, liability, low pay, tax minimization, national subjugation avoidance, and so on), but most may speak English as the common denominator language. They also can have a decent infirmary. Also, depending on the trade routes they ply, they may have separate, additional cabins for fare-revenue generation. (Think pre-SARS-CoV-2.) Also, due to piracy and such, they may/could carry armed security, who'll need cabins. But, Carrying maritime security could open up international law issues. Imagine the ship's master violating the maritime laws of a hostile-attitude countey, and administratively or legally "arrests" the ship, but the armed security's weapons become a thing of interest to the detaining nation.
Jump-drive vs. Hyperspace drive vs. Warp drive...you guys need to pick up a copy of GURPS Space sometime, which rather nicely lays out the different FTL methods.
What did he say at 21:46, after ship-to-ship, "does what sediment in" or something? Google's captions also heard "sediment in", but Captain Foley said "I love that expression"... The guy introduced himself as Commander "Gung SayGuys"? Google heard "I am agog hi guys"... that's a pretty thick accent & a little clearer pronunciation would be awesome. Still Thumbs Up
Regarding the second shuttle in the concept cross section views: I've been watching the show and now into the third season, but still no mention of a second shuttle, just the Marauder. They probably dropped that part of the original concept.
With as many times as the Raza was boarded in the show, it makes sense that they have a secondary receiving area for them. If the Maurader is already in its berth, there’s no where else they could land in the ship, and they had to have had a place to keep the Ryzon shuttle Ryo stole in season 2.
He is wrong in the height dimensions, it can not be 430m high, that is almost 1400ft, that would make it 2x as high as it is long and the images don't support this configuration.
Kenneth La Rocque They've done the shadow battlecrab, EA Omega class and Minbari Sharlin already, might be trying to expand the breadth of universes first. That being said, White Star, Excalibur, Warlock, and Drazi Sunhawk would be likewise interesting to see dissected. The Cortez was a superbly well-thought-out ship as well.
Why did you say the Bajoran freighter was the "only other ship" on the diagram with FTL? In fact *all* pictured ships have FTL capability, besides Serenity (and even that is debatable).
Very nice take on one of the modern scifi shows. It is a good time to be a true sci-fi fan atm with "The Expanse", "Killjoys", "Dark Matter" and "The Orville" just around the corner...not so much hyped about CBS Productions atm as they are strangling fan productions and obviously forcing the JJ-aesthetic too much for my taste. But why is the crew size such an issue compared to the ship size? The Nostromo is around the length of the Constitution class and only has a crew of seven, plus mother. So size does not matter, just depart from the Trek verse for one moment and accept that others do it differently. Just sayin‘...
The raza is a pure beast that is a true battle tank. Dark matter was an awesome show and should be picked up again or given its own movie.
Raza is quickly becoming one of my most fav ships in any sci-fi shows i have seen, and i have seen most. It is such a good design, something that humanity might be capable of making at some point
love the Hyperdrive Jump Animation.
Dark Matter is an awesome show
OHHHH YAAAAA.
The Raza is one of the best ships ever even when the blink drive doesn't work, it holds it own and kicks ass
Whatever it's base class is, comparing it to the Raza is like comparing a stock YT-1300 with the Millenium Falcon. It's basically a corporate "Black Ops" ship. Looks harmless and innocent until it unloads on you.

The Raza has nano technically. It can self repair. Holds up to 100 people. Minimum crew of 5
It should be remembered that the Raza was stolen from the Galactic Alliance. This is a military cargo transport and includes cryogenic sleep pods. Bottom line is that its basically a c-5 Galaxy combined with an AC-130J with nantes, ftl and a pack of badass crew members.
nanites*
yes that makes sense...

This show is really excellent and I wish they had continued it. It was cancelled on a cliffhanger!

"There's no aliens as far as we see..." yeah, that changed. lol
I loved this episode! Great to see the Raza next to ships from other franchises. I didn't realize it was that big.
(Also, I agree with Stuart in that it kinda looks like the dropship from Alien. It has a similar muscular look.)
i was thinking it looks like a pelican from halo.
from the front view atleast.
I thought that too.
Uhh, the top does too.
I would actually love to see a super bloated pelican as like a frigate or something, maybe a carrier or support ship for normal sized Pelicans lol.
having pelican type larger ships would be interesting to see for the UNSC. i could see them in the role of heavy transports and in the roles of our modern cutters, corvettes and frigates in which they serve a support function to the larger capital ships. as they stand now thy make a useful drop ship/ gun ship and can carry light loads to resupply areas. that being said i would also like to see a freight specific pelican type where the passenger bay is removed to support shipping crates.
Nice work digging up all these pics! Great work Guys! :)
Its a heavily automated ship that has nano repair bots and can be operated entirely by one android. That's why the small crew. Though to be fair they've upgraded the ships weapons and shields so much that it generally can beat warships one on one.
you guys need to watch Dark Matter great show great characters
great family feel etc
O.M.G. Yes, I have been waiting for You guys to discuss this craft!!!
Thanx :-)
An interesting bit of dialogue from the show stated that without the Android the crew wouldn't be able to maintain or operate the vessel properly. The Android can connect to the ship's systems and control various ship functions and auto repair systems.
A ship form Star Wars and a Ship from Babylon 5 had a baby this is it.
i really like the show it feels some what like fire fly or a good replacement
the Falcon was a cargo transporter. It was like a souped up trucker cab. It normally would have had a huge freight of cargo inf ront of it, hence the cockpit on the side.
So sad the show didn’t keep going. Loved it.

Love this.
Sadly, Syfy just cancelled this series. There is a campaign going to try and get another network or Netflix to pick it up, check out Joe Mallozzis blog for more info.
It has huge cargo bays and each crew member has really nice quarters!
i love how the engine pods are used to pull off its corkscrew flight pattern in a fight.
thanks for your time.
p.s. should i say it. transporter + warp drive = transwarp drive? lol :D
My fav ship, glad I found you guys, now subscribed.
Third season started on the 9th of this month.
I know people say that the RAZA is too generic, but I still recognize it on site.
Great episode!
I hope that if there's a positive aspect of SARS-CoV-2, the cast and crew of Dark Matter may find their schedules and contracts opened up a bit enough to make a Season 4-6 exploration seem tantalizing. I looks like a fancy huose in some areas in the inside .like refit tom enterprise refit .and a star gate and little haloish feel.
It's a really good show, lot of action and intrigue, a very character driven show.
My first thought of the FTL from Dark Matter was that it was very similar to the IN-SKIP FTL from the 3D Captain Harlock movie.
Great ship! Haven't been too interested in the show, but maybe I'll check it out.
Its very bland. The writing is very poor. But the acting is ok. I watch it, but just because I watch anything that has sci-fi on it. Its sister show: "Killjoys" is a bit better.

i would actually say its the other way around...i prefer dark matter over killjoy...
"FTL doesn´t work like BSG" I think Samuel will be surprised when he gets to the end of season 2.
Still doesn't work like BSG, given its unlimited range.
Definitely looks like The pelican from halo big brother. Slap a UNSC on the side and it would fit right in
it feel like a fancy lobby in a bunker feel.
With the Blink Drive,
it was the Fastest Ship ever.
Anywhere in the Galaxy…
Instantly?
How could you not discuss that?
The Captain was capable of going into Space without a suit
(amongst other things)
and the Android was capable of operating the Ship with no human management or assistance-
That really puts the Raza in a class all her own.
Also,
there definitely WERE aliens.
That was right
where it got canned-
It was never resolved.

Great discussion on the Raza. Dark Matter is a great show. Just a shame SYFY have pulled the plug and cancelled the show but hopefully it gets picked up elsewhere.
Great job as always guys. I love Dark Matter. I hope a scale model of this ship comes out.
Btw, can I make a request for the Aliens dropship and Blade Runner police spinner?
mrtokyofrank You can get plans for a 3d printed version of The Raza from SyFy.
Will check that out. Thanks a lot.
Raza has two different FLT engines.
I like the Generic Data text can go her maybe ?? well done!
With 201.8 meters in lenght, the Raza is a little shorter than Stargate's BC-304 Daedalus-class ships. It's a good size for a "hero" ship.
hey can you do videos for the sdf-1 and the variable fighters from the macross series?
It looks like a Pelican on steroids and i love it.
BLINK DRIVE IS LITERALLY THE JUMP DRIVE FROM BSG.
Could Trekyards do a Fleetyards episode with either the Skaal Tel Taiidan capital class destroyer or the Hiigaran Mothership 'Pride of Hiigara' both ships from the Homeworld series of games? That would be amazing!
Cool show and cool ship.
This is the best science fiction show that you aren't watching. Binge it, and you are welcome in advance.
First impression: It's a Pelican.
I'd like to see the Raza next to the Defiant from DS9.
I think it's the best ship ever!!!Plus, it's got a blink drive.
i'm reminded of today's supertankers.enormous room for cargo and bare bones for the crew.
Imagine the ship's master violating the maritime laws of a hostile-attitude countey, and administratively or legally "arrests" the ship, but the armed security's weapons become a thing of interest to the detaining nation.
looks like some parts of this ship helped formed Prometheus
It looks like the ship from the game Independence War, to a fair degree...
The Dreadnought? I suppose the outboard engines on the sides bear a good resemblance, don't they... not sure the rest does. :)
I love this show. Plots need a lot of work. Is it ever coming back.
Jump-drive vs. Hyperspace drive vs. Warp drive...you guys need to pick up a copy of GURPS Space sometime, which rather nicely lays out the different FTL methods.
I miss Dark Matter
What did he say at 21:46, after ship-to-ship, "does what sediment in" or something? Google's captions also heard "sediment in", but Captain Foley said "I love that expression"... The guy introduced himself as Commander "Gung SayGuys"? Google heard "I am agog hi guys"... that's a pretty thick accent & a little clearer pronunciation would be awesome. Still Thumbs Up
He said, "It does what it says on the tin."
When are you going to do The Expanse?
Finally
I think it is over 2 hundeide feet like 240 or 232 feet .
they forgot the razas upgrade that gives it instant warp by folding space
Regarding the second shuttle in the concept cross section views: I've been watching the show and now into the third season, but still no mention of a second shuttle, just the Marauder. They probably dropped that part of the original concept.
With as many times as the Raza was boarded in the show, it makes sense that they have a secondary receiving area for them. If the Maurader is already in its berth, there’s no where else they could land in the ship, and they had to have had a place to keep the Ryzon shuttle Ryo stole in season 2.
Looks like a Halo Pelican drop ship.
Also, no comments on it looking like the Aerial Hunter-Killer from the Terminator series?
I remember watching DM and Expanse at the same time and Expanse’s production values spoiled me.
Is it RAD Captain Foley?
He is wrong in the height dimensions, it can not be 430m high, that is almost 1400ft, that would make it 2x as high as it is long and the images don't support this configuration.
I would love to see the two of yo do the explorer ship Cortez from season 2, episode 4 of Babylon 5.
The Cortez was a superbly well-thought-out ship as well.
this ship dose look like a Halo dropship but that first pic reminded me of a bulldog
Why did you say the Bajoran freighter was the "only other ship" on the diagram with FTL? In fact *all* pictured ships have FTL capability, besides Serenity (and even that is debatable).
You can tell the scale, by the windows, it's all about the windows. This guy never watched the show.
You have to watch The Expanse.
totally looks like the avatar planes and Halo drop ships!!!
I thought that bridge looked Klingon as well
Wait you have Colonial One which is also FTL capable.
Hasn't seen Dark Matter either. I guess if it isn't related to Star Trek, "Captain" Foley doesn't have time to watch it.
Blink Drive?
Do some ships from The Expanse they are very practical and functional.
what if their company makes a 82. ship 600 feet fraters .
looks like an oversized pelican
Very nice take on one of the modern scifi shows. It is a good time to be a true sci-fi fan atm with "The Expanse", "Killjoys", "Dark
Matter" and "The Orville" just around the corner...not so much hyped about CBS Productions atm as they are strangling fan productions and obviously forcing the JJ-aesthetic too much for my taste.
But why is the crew size such an issue compared to the ship size? The Nostromo is around the length of the Constitution class and only has a crew of seven, plus mother. So size does not matter, just depart from the Trek verse for one moment and accept that others do it differently. Just sayin‘...
