Hey man!!
You saved my life!!!
A month ago I bought a destroyed lawn mower.
Repaired the blade, changed the air filter and cleaned the carburetor after viewing zillions of youtube tutorials.
Obviously, it didn't start.
JUST when I was about to take out cylinder, valves, crankshaft and so on, I remembered your demonstration on HOW should the PRIMER work.
As it didn't work as you showed, I decided to give it a try and put the DOUBLE gasket.
It started at the FIRST shot.
If I have the luck to go wherever you live i ought you a bottle of wine!!!!!!
Congratulations!!!
right on good job
HI JEFF
.
BEST VIDEO OF ITS KIND I HAVE EVER SEEN. YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR SUBJECT AND HOW TO PRESENT IT .CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS
JOE
Thank you Joe! I have been fixing mowers and such for about 30 years and I am still learning new things , tips and tricks everyday
Excellent ! Thanks for the great instruction. Knowing how to diagnosis and repair small engines is a valuable skill. Appreciate your sharing your experience.
thanks for watching
Never seen anybody more proud of themselves😆 stop encouraging him Ernest!
lol!
I cant tell you how many lawn mowers Ive pulled out of peoples trash on trash day during the summer that only had dirty caborators and nothing else wrong with it. Some high dollar ones also. Great job.
Good vidio no disrespect but you make very entertaining keep it up great Job....
Glad to see that people still try to fix things. Seems like everybody just buys new as soon as things break
I’d much rather try to fix something myself and save a bunch of money than buying a new one
I am a 70 year old man and after watching the video figured I could do this myself. Ordered part #795083 diaphragm/gasket kit and disassembled, cleaned and put back together. Started right up but was leaking gas from one of the five screws. I took it back apart and added the old gasket {2 gaskets and 1 diaphragm total} and that stopped the screw from leaking. Starts good and works fine now! And saved myself about $75.00
Jeff. Thanks for your Tecumseh videos. I did the carb job and had to get some gaskets..cleaned the tank. New fuel lines...then it ran. Had puffing...inconsistant...so I adjusted the RPM how you did it. Was running better....th we n put new plug in.tapped it to spec....Boom. Wow what a great mower now....and I made 80 bucks
Great job!
I have this model, the instruction book is hopeless & after watching your video I now have a mower that starts easily & goes like a cut cat so thank you, it's better than new!
Great video..Continue too amaze your neighbors...Future customer's charge extra ! Love this video .Saving it for reference..I fixed a lawnmower that was neglected for about 5 years ! Running like new 8 years later..Replaced everything but carburetor ...Briggs and Stratton run for Life.Maintenance. Tune up.. spell check..
You are like the "messiah" for lawnmowers.
That lawnmower was way past dead.
Well done, mate.
lol! Thanks for watching!
Great video!!! I would have to say you are definitely one of the best lawnmower doctors around.
Wow, thanks!
I was given a Snapper that was in Lake Washington for 3 days.....took a week. But darn I got it running thanks to this video on Briggs engine. The self propel.......that's another story. But its coming along.
whoa! good job
Love seeing mowers brought back from the dead
EARNEST was NOT TOO happy after a first pull start ... :) AWESOME VIDEO!!!
LOL!
I have a future small engine project in mind with very little small engine repair experience. This video is very helpful.
People that post videos in RUclips deserve all kind of respect for dedication, attention to details and most of all the willingness to share their knowledge, however for a 43 minutes video and going by the tittle I was expecting a motor tear down with spark plug replacement and at least a few shots of the new blade and perhaps a new air filter. Thank you for your video, I am sure that there are many other people satisfied with it, and I am the only one with a critic on it.
Found an old Lawn Boy mower at a lawn mower bone yard. I'm fairly handy at fixing things and use youtube a bunch. Bought it for $20. It had been sitting in the open for ?? a long time. Got it home and cleaned it, Replaced oil, cleaned out gas tank, Replaced air filter (bad). Lubed all the wheels, cleaned the carb, replaced a bent blade. IT RUNS. Was I just lucky or is this common?? If it is common it could become a side gig since I'm retired. Kind of fun. After a little more work it looks almost new. Are things like this in demand??? Where are the best places to advertise it? Its on Craigslist but open to more ideas.
Great video. She looked rough but it's hard to keep a Briggs & Stratton down.
After years of taking my equipment to a small engine repair guy and watching his rates climb up and up and up I finally said enough and started digging into my own tools, buying carb kits online, and fixing everything I own. I'm rather amazed how easy it is to work on these things. My first rebuild was a stihl 362, which I had gotten the wrong carb kit for, yet was able to clean up and assemble again with no leaks. Now I'm looking to get a riding mower and have spent the morning scouring the net just looking at various rebuild videos. idk how I stumbled on a push mower rebuild video but I'm glad I did. I've never had to replace a string yet. Was that paracord? Good stuff all around. Cheers man!
My small engine guy told me that my weed whacker only had a certain life span of about four months running time. I got tired of buying new ones. So, I bought a new carb kit on line and bolted it on. It was like a brand new machine.
My field is carpentry not small engine repair, but when push comes to shove I can watch videos and educate myself and get it done.
The tips from the viewers helps as well. Thanks
Thanks friend
Jeff...I have a Briggs & Stratton 7.0 lawn mower from Sears Craftsman. It doesn't have a fuel filter on the inline gas hose. Why don't they? Yet, riding mowers have one. We're using the same gasoline. Thanks for responding. THUMBS UP!!!
Most only have a screen inside the tank. I agree, a better fuel filter would be nice. Not sure why manufacturers do this.
I love this video. It was very in depth about how to repair a lawnmower engine. I'm trying to build a go kart with a lawnmower engine. This is very useful. Thank you.
Do you have vertical shaft or horizontal shaft? How could you build one with vertical shaft ?
@@george25199 put a roller skate wheel on engine shaft on to a wheelbarrow wheel
Your kids does the same thing mine do. Lol. First they are helpful, letting you know " it starts a little bit" then they cover their ears and took off eventually. 😂
I was given a G M C with a B&S 3.75 the base was rusty and corroded the engine had old oil in it , the carby was so full of dirt and garbage , but I persevered , ; painted the underside of the deck with rust killer ( after cleaning of course ) , cleaned and repainted the engine ( it took almost a day for the old oil to fully drain ) , new blades after base plate was repainted , carby back together everything works , used some primer to help the engine start , and Action , first pull of the rope . ; I realised that the governor connection was put on the wrong way so that was changed and Wow , Going like brand new !
Footnote : I also cleaned and repainted the outer frame , not quite GMC Blue , but it looks like brand new !
Hello great content, try using oven cleaner from the dollar store, it cuts built up dirt and grime really well and it's cheap. Spray it all over the engine and deck wait 10-15 minutes spray off with garden hose or better yet pressure washer. Works great on your car engines also.
good tip! thanks for watching Gary!
Terrific video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent. 👏👏😀🌈🇭🇲👏👏👏
So nice of you. Thanks for watching
I was surprised that magneto made spark in that crusty condition. I give them every chance by removing the corrosion.
It prevents the hard starting I have seen people having.
A good connector and good attachment at the sp plug is also needed.
Great video! just a suggestion, you can clean that carburetor a lot better with some EAGLE ONE CHROME ACID RIM CLEANER. All you'll need to do is use an old tooth brush and scrub the wheel cleaner in. This stuff will eat away all the rust and mineral build up, it works in minutes. I rebuild 2 stroke dirt bikes, the whole thing and the rim cleaner work fantastic on all metal parts.
thanks for the tip!
Hi Jeff!!! If you have 3 or 3.5hp Briggs motor from 1960's or 70's, you have a treasure. Those machines are great.
Thanks a lot for this video. I learned more from you than from other videos.
thanks for watching and the nice comment
That was cool to watch. Interesting to see it take off right away good lawnmower now. He did it Ernest.
Wow amazing results. Sad to see the neglect. I grew up in the Milwaukee area a couple miles from their main fsctory. Very proud of their motors. Still competing with the Chinese and Japanese successfully.
In my shop, I have a old 3x3 canning table I use, I put 1x2 furring strips on each end so the mower doesn't roll off. Much easier than bending over.
I enjoy these endlessly, don't know why.
I thought I was watching Michael Douglas repairing a lawn mower 😂😂😂😂
Ya im still laughing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tools match the mower!
Love it. Thanks!
I have always wanted to learn to work on my own small engines because I’m sure 90% of the problems I have are be use of something to do with my carb. I don’t have an extra mower or snow blower so if I mess them up some way forget how they go back on I’ll be screwed. I have watched a ton of these videos on you tube so you would think that I could take these apart and put them back on in my sleep but no. I’m a hands on guy and I learn by doing not by watching. I have always been interested in working on my own stuff but there aren’t any small engine schools near me
You can buy a small engine hook used both the internet and watch some RUclips videos and you'll be all good
Wow you Sir earned a damit boy, this is the absolute best informative lawnmower video and tutorial bar none. Thanks for sharing as always be blessed
Thanks for video,I have a old toro mower that I'm gonna work on this winter,I'll look back at your video when I'm ready to do it.Thanks jeff
It's always a good idea to remove the wire from the spark plug before messing with the blade. I know it wouldn't start based on the condition but someone else's miles may vary
good tip!
Great teachings. Great video. I'm 42 and thinking about enrolling in a small engine course or school. Any advice
Go for it! There are many good teachers here on RUclips also.
I waited and waited for the carb cleaner spray to come out. I love that stuff!
lol!
I drowned my AMC eagle in a mud puddle one time, water 1 ft. deep inside the floor. Carb took in water. I used the red plastic straw from a can of wd-40 to suck the water out of the carb with my mouth. Started right up. Save those straws !
The top off of a body spray will do the same trick, suck the water up and out. I've used a turkey baster to empty a brake reservoir, lotion bottle top is also effective.
That was very informative. I always wondered how these little engines worked.
This video was amazing. Can't believe you fixed that busted thing in one day. You earned my Sub.
Top job mate good film .👍 From ENGLAND 👍
Would it be easier or advisable to submerge that carburetor in muriatic acid to dissolve whatever oxidation and/or rust is on there?
No
This has been a huge help. Thank you for including the small details that a unexperienced person might not know.
I also have a lawnmower which I cleaned very well, but it still doesn't start if I pour gasoline from the spark plug, it starts and stops immediately... no idea what's wrong.. thanks
Sounds like a fuel delivery-plugged carburetor problem. Make sure the main jet holes-(brass float bowl bolt) are clear
Jeff, have a question for you , I took out my carb to replace the gaskets and now i have spark
when i spray starting fluid at the carb but can't seem to get fuel to the carb, removed plug at bowl but there is no gas.Could you give me an idea as to what could be the problem?
plugged fuel line? or the float needle valve and seat may need replaced, maybe the float is sticking closed.
Another great tutorial. Makes it look easy and something I might try.
friendly suggestion ... Second time I've watched the carb rebuild on you tube, both of yall mention the grooves go down ... of course down is a relative term, and the grooves are impossible to see. You might try a different qualifier. I'll be rebuilding a carb soon (that's why I'm watching some of these you tube gems) and I think I'll be able to figure it out. But it would be more clear if you said "towards the bottom of the bowl", or "top of the carb" , or "next to the pointed end of the float needle" etc.
having said that, this was a VERY informative video, I enjoyed it a lot. I learned that you can wash out the gas tank with soap and water (I had been using carb cleaner or fresh gas/sea foam mix).
One thing I learned, that I did not know prior ... b&s gas tanks have built in fuel filters. I suppose they could become clogged ... I suspect my neighbors mower has this problem. I've tried to get it started for her for a bit. I suspect her ex put something in the gas tank of her very new mower that suspiciously stopped working.
now, for my joke ... towards the end you said "don't forget your oil dipstick" to which I reply ... who you calling a dipstick :)
haha! thanks for comment friend!
very nice video Jeff however, for me a man with no mechanical abilities I just go and buy a new one. Thanks for all the good info for all that have these abilities
Fair enough! Thanks for watching
I have a question for u I have a mower a toro 6.75 hp Briggs engine on a push mower. It started running rough a couple weeks ago. I cleaned the carb meticulously, changed plug, cleaned gas tank out and put fresh gas in it. After 10-20 mins of mowing is when it starts to act up it's like it's trying to catch up is the best way I know how to explain it. We changed the coil out of a craftsman 6.5 hp mower. The other day I took air hose and blew it out real good around the flywheel and other parts of the mower.aftet I did that it would run excellent for about an hour to hour and 10 mins and then it would act like it was going to do it again. Do u have any ideas as to what it could be. The mower is real clean has been garage kept.
I love that Roached -Out motor..... and that thing is a total Rat Rod mower..... Awesome...so Up yours, Earnest !
lol!
RI rerp
Thanks guys very much for helping me out on my mower
Man, that was a rough start! The scariest thing to do is to start with missing parts, but this one at least looked complete. I love the briggs engines too. They are tough. Gladd as I am watching I hear you saying you arent planning to use the deck. :)
Michael Jude b
Maybe I missed it but did you ever change the oil????? Anyway It was a good rebuild and thank you.
Yep most likely the last thing I did after I made sure it ran.
Can you tell me how to fix a troy bilt pressure washer 2500 2.3psi Honda motor? It cranks but doesn't stay cranked. No leaks, spark plug is great, may have had bad gas in it at one time. Any ideas?
You need to make it ABUNDANTLY clear that the spark plug wire needs to be disconnected before turning the mower over and turning the engine with the blade in the event that the engine happens to start while being handled, unless anyone is OK with going through life minus a hand. Also note that the plug wire needs to be secured so that the boot can't snap back over the plug nipple because even a disconnected plug WILL spark without the wire clipped onto its nipple as the electrical current will arc across. The mower also needs to be tipped over carburetor side UP to avoid oil flooding the carb. Thank you.
Industry don’t spin it over like your starting a plane and your good
I learned something useful this labor day weekend, thanks Jeff!
One craftsman mower of mine has lost compression... but I will get to tinker with a few other mowers before I pony up for a new mower
Thanks for the input will give it a shot hopefully that's the case of my problem
I was given ( the other day ) , a G M C with a B & S 3.75 hp engine .
The frame was as bad as Yours was , but I have cleaned it up , treated it with Galvanizing Coating/protector painted the underside , ( a day later ) , with the closest color I could find to the G M C color : the outer frame beeen cleaned off and rust spots treated with Black metal paint , then preliminary coat of ( again ) blue paint from a pressure can ; the handle bars , axels , and metal fuel tank been cleaned and painted Black Gloss enamel , I 'll repaint again after this weekend !
The engine , Wow dirt and filth galore , but I have cleaned it so it looks respectable , the oil , looked like tar , ( Yuk ) , took 4 hours to completely drain out ( I think its been the original oil )
Magneto , dirt and rust , but like Yours 12 mils vert tight , but it looks like dirt and rust !
Next week , I pull the engine apart and clean and check ; I'll give You a progress report and hopefully I can send some photos of its resurrection and future ?
While carb was open I would have replaced and cleaned under the welch plug and while the engine cover was off I would have taken the coil off and cleaned the magnets and the coil pickups to ensure good spark.
It would have been nice to show how and why to check the key in the flywheel. Also, since you went this far, removing the head, cleaning off the carbon and replacing the head gasket is a good idea.Since you may have a blown head gasket.
Love your positive attitude! That's how we fix the world! Q: At minute 3:42 I wondered if you have an air compressor, maybe you do, don't you like to give that beauty an air bath? I think you both will appreciate it, same as having the compressor close by just if you find new hidden dirt. Ok, I'll continue enjoying your material.
Min 4:36, what a difference!
Min. 39:50 Love your references to Ernest, so funny lol. Great job rebuilding the carb and cleaning all you can your mower. One suggestion I heard and am applying, oil (can be old used vehicle engine oil or any but better the thicker ones) can be applied to steel surfaces, especially the deck bottom, the blade, and any steel surfaces you want to preserve. I heard the old timers applied it to their vehicles, especially their farm trucks and equipments. They'll get a nice patina, color and last longer. At the end, we want our money in our pockets.
That was sooo beautiful to hear it running yeah!!!
Great tips! thanks for watching friend!
@@JeffsLittleEngineService Thank you brother! You're an inspiration!
OSPHO is worth it's weight in gold. It SEEMS expensive at about $25/gallon but, when applied correctly, it'll go a long way. It converts rust (iron oxide) to iron phosphate, a hard, inert substance that turns the metal black. I have used this, followed by a rattle can of epoxy chassis paint ($5 @ harbor Freight) after a day.
If I were to buy a new mower, or anything else (highly unlikely!), I'd preemptively do this given the impressive results. Cheers!
This guy is a true craftsman. I am impressed.
You can also use a screw to get those needle seat out works pretty good.
What are you doing
I cleaned the carburetor. I would like to know if I can get a new carburetor
With regards to the needle and seat...I get that the seat should be replaced because it is made of soft material, but what is the logic behind replacing the needle if it is metallic and presumably hard?
the needle will get a groove in it where it seats
Jeff's Little Engine Service thank you so much for your prompt response.
Good job, I’d be putting the engine on another deck, as you said. It should have a long life.
I have now a 38 inch Poland riding mower. I just put a 42 inch craftsman deck on it, will that drive belt on that 42 inch craftsman work on a 38 inch Poland??
probably not, but you never know!
Jeff ,it does work. I feel like that the drive belt will also work too.
Rust is an insulator so you need to take some fine sandpaper and clean that Magneto and coil it will run better
Do you use an ultrasonic to vibrate all the little junk out of nicks and crannies.
just bought one finally last year (after 20 years). Works great
Ethical dilemma here. I am not mechanically inclined. I went walking and saw a craftsman lawnmower out for garbage. I rolled it home and the next morning pretended to know what I am doing. I was going to check for spark but skipped that and just sprayed starting fluid into the carb. It fired up. The gas tank was empty and the oil was okay. I put some gas in and it fired up and ran. But it was leaking gas. I drained the tank and took off the hose and it was beyond bad. I went out and got a new hose. Put it on, used it to cut the parts of my yard where my tractor does not go. Should I return it?
I had to pause the video for a moment to say this. If I close my eyes and listen I swear you sound just like Michael Douglas! Ok now having said that i want to watch the rest of the video.
Super video!!! Please tell “your neighbor” I said thanks for encouraging you to do this. Helps tons!!! Keep up the great work. Subbed!!!
Love to see the old engine and see them run
Great detail I’ll become a regular viewer thanks jeff
Excellent! thanks for watching
Super chingon amazing job,I have same machine, and amazon can I get the accessories and how? Please big hug desde Michoacán México
Do those copper cleanings they don't scratch the aluminum. Do they?
No copper is softer than aluminum so no scratches!
I got the same motor except mine has an automatic choke with a plastic flapper that controls the choke with air flow off the flywheel. I broke the mount off the carb that holds the flapper. I got a new carb otw but after seeing yours doesn't have the choke I'm wondering now if I can just remove the choke from the carb and leave it out.
you can remove the choke but it will be hard to start when cold (you could use starting fluid to start). Usually the auto choke operates from the heat that comes from the muffler
Can you order generic needle seats or do they have to be looked up by the model number?
best to look up a part number
It really helps to clean any rust on the flywheel as well
I have to same motor but with auto choke. She starts first pull but runs at low RPM. If it had a throttle (it doesn't) it would be as if it was stuck at idle. New plug, new air filter and new carb. Cold starts, it runs great until I turn it off or it hits a clump and bogs out. Restarting is the low RPM. If I wait several hours it'll work again. Any ideas?
check that the govenor spring is adjusted to rev the engine how you want. It also could be a plugged carburetor and contaminated fuel system
Nope it's a new carb. Governor spring is set. Fuel line from tank to carb is clear. New gas. Thanks for the reply though. Have a great day.
That tang with the spring is the govonor spring. You bend the tang to increase or reduce the idle.
I learned a few more things today, thanks!
Do all lawn mower come with flywheel key or some of older models don't have key
Most do I am not sure about antique engines
That's a 6 HP Briggs !! Nice !
just caught this vid, nice!! BUT you didn't add or replace the oil that was in it when you got it. it showed it was about 1qt. low, right??
These engines use less than a quart....
They only use 20 oz. of oil.
I did everything in the video. The lawn mower would start to go but then it would stop again. There is also some gas coming out of the exhaust. Do you know how I can get it to go?
your carburetor still needs work. Cleaning and or rebuilding. Make sure gas tank and fuel line are clean.
I have a question!
when you take the carbon off and you turn it the piece that is on the top of the carb on mine broke cause it was plastic. what are they called and where can I get one.
thank you man my mower has been sitting for a while and I couldn't find the name of the part!
With all that oil on the air filter, do you think it would be a good idea to check the breather to make sure it's still working properly? Great video.
not a bad idea
Looks like water, and it looks like the mower was under water at some point. Get some rustoleum on that blade deck.
My mower stopped working after I replaced carb and primer bubble. Any idea what’s happening?
cheap aftermarket carbureotr do not work make sure to buy oem Briggs
Steve where did you get the tool that you use to rotate engines. And what is it called i can't find one.
What about the oil? You showed thick, coagulated oil at a low level in crank case. But, did you flush that crap out and put in fresh oil. Never mentioned this in video. Other wise, excellent. I learned from this presentation. Thank you
I changed it
I have the same mower and I cleaned the carb added new fuel new spark plug new oil and it starts but dies after any suggestions 😪
it needs the fuel system and carburetor cleaned
The quickest way to set the gap, is to use a normal paper business card, for get about feeler gauges, i use the business cards all the time so does Mustie 1
¿Did I hear correctly?
"...pure T-Rex shit..."😂😂😂😂
That lawn mower had went thru a classic case of lawn mower abuse, the previous owner should be ashamed of themselves.🇺🇸👍😃
Haven't watched your videos in a while good job.
Thanks friend I plan on making more soon
Ha ha, Earnest is keeping an eye on your work, nice. Enjoyed the video as I wat to learn to repair my own mower and chainsaw. You added some good detail that I was missing, sub'd and looking forward to your other vids.
Thanks 👍
Jeff THANK oh so MUCH great walk through the only thing I miss is how are the springs hook on other side of cab ? (dumb Q rt ) all I really need is a picture so as to figure out . Thanxs again !
Ralph, do you mean springs on the carb? If so, I would recommend a quick Google search. If all else fails, I can send a schematic from my B&S service manual
