I became an ARMY in 2016. I was one of those ARMY who had been requesting songs in radio and went to Walmart and HMV (Target was not in Canada where I am from) every day to get BTS album on shelves. We sent bouquet and cupcakes to radio DJs when they played BTS' music. One said, those cupcakes might contain poison posting the picture in Twitter. Some said if we give their tweet 1000 likes, they will play BTS and then either didn't play at all while we waited all day OR played at 3 AM at night. So everything this documentary said is what we experienced and MY personal experience. 💜
I really respect u older Armies u all were there supporting them I wasn't there from the beginning it's really sad but I am proud of u guys u all deserve all the appreciation thnks to u guys BTS reached at this level other than their hardwork u guys supported them really thanks 💜💜
@@Hotshortie They were. Even when Butter Remix released with Megan Thee Stallion, we were requesting the Remix and they kept playing the original. As a result Megan didn't get the credit for her collab. But at least we collected $100,000 and donated to three charities in her name (the exact amount her company was demanding from her). 💜
Yeah I can understand that some radio dj, especially back then were still skeptical and thought of bts as some kind of a phenomenon. A lot of them blatantly said mean, xenophobic, and even borderline racist things. At least that's what I experienced and saw with my own eyes on Twitter. 2018 was a rough year both for BTS and ARMY. They hit lots of milestone. But in a perspective of hate, xenophobia, and racism, I wouldn't want to relive that year and those experiences lol.
Haha 😂 - ”brainwashing people to be functional members of society, with a conscience”… BEST comment EVER 🙌🏻. Exactly what happened to me 😂. Although I brainwashed myself with BTS, they didn’t do anything except being seven absolutely amazing young men. Borahae 💜!
*There is an article with interviews to relevant **-as in, project heads and so-** USA ARMYs written about the journey to get BTS in the radio which you can try to find to see a more in depth exposition about the subject* I never knew how much racism, xenophobia and orientalism was around me until I discovered BTS and talked about them. In radio stations case, I was one of the many from my country Argentina who requested their songs to be played and tried to make them appear on votes/polls for radios and tv channels where music videos were played. Every single country with certain amount of organized armys were doing that, plus giving flowers/cupcakes and a letter to stations when they would finally play them - even if it was just for a few seconds, which was the maximun we would get most of the time. USA armys would even be cussed at or directly not receiving a verbal answer before the radios would end the call. When radio stations later found out that armys would synthonize when they'd announce they would play bts, put them on twitter polls or anything, they started to use that to their benefit while giving non-existent or unsatisfactory (between 2am-5am) plays. Even sport organizations lol. It took a long time, a lot of rules research, a lot of demands for discrimination in media (tv, radio, social media) against bts and asians in general, and many constant achivements for BTS to get the place they have now in these spaces. And there are still differences: one of their english tracks? Hundreds of spins on its first day. Their korean track? Less than 10 in the same amount of time. Yeah, the genre was different but just to give you an example. ((Music in spanish also faces a similar problem, even though latin and hispanic cultures are way more seen in the usa than the asian ones!)) Billboard even brought up the subject about album/song sales and streaming to BTS on a written interview, questioning if it was just for them the get numbers with sells and streams instead of radio play. (You can find that interview as well if interested, RM answers was great.) But rather than that anomally which follows the rules (!) being questioned, doesn't that shows exactly how the fandom HAS TO work hard on streams and buying bc we don't get numbers from radio play bc BTS aren't accepted nearly as much as any other english-speaking artist? Your advice is welcomed! Though that was what was done, along with other methods with try-and-fail Lastly, i know it seems harsh to say something is racist or xenophobic. But when it is, it is. Even if the one who displays that character is someone you have been friends with for 28 years. You can be discriminative for something and not for another thing: treat fat people badly but speak up for black lives matter, support gay rights but say trans people are sick, deny the asexual spectrum but be feminist, and so many other very real examples.
There is so much truth in what you said. I thought people around me were not racist or xenophobic. But in fact, they were their own interpretation of non-racist or non-xenophobic. Until you talk to them about BTS and see their instinctive reaction that speaks otherwise. Most people don't even realise, how ignorant they are. BTS and ARMYs will always fight this battle. But what helps us is that BTS and ARMY are together and organic. So it is very difficult for external forces to really break us. We either stay where we are or we grow. We never fall apart and that's what helps us get better every day. 💜
@@NyxGamingIN Yeah, no one realizes they are discriminative until they are comfronted about it, until they get out of their comfort zone. It's really sad and shocking but we must push those limits Just like RM said: we never got something in the first try! Which shows the sick society we live in (before regarding money and influence, now regarding ethnicity), but also how we can make progress with (a lot of) time and therefore make a little bit of a difference for the better
BTS comeback is official, their label confirmed it. Get ready for June 10th, also, they will release thing bits by bits, such as the sets list, single, photos... etc.
Their comeback album release date is closer but I can't see a pre-selling shop. I wanna purchase one but I think it's not on weverse. Or does it not work that way? Is it only available on the release date? Sorry, this will actually be my first album purchase ever so I'm curious how it works.
@@mac9822 They will make another announcement at some point with more information on the album as well as a link to preorder! Weverse isn’t the only place to preorder from but it’s best to wait until big hit announcement that the album is available to preorder to make sure that the album you buy is official :)
In 2017-2018 ARMY worked their butts off calling radio stations to try and get BTS on US radio. It didn't matter what ARMY said, what connections wereade, what gifts were sent very few DJs were willing to play their music. We later found out thst the DJs had a group chat where they made fun of BTS and ARMY. The more popular BTS grew the worst radio was. Iheart, which owns about 850 radio stations, invited them for interviews to get clickes but wouldn't put their music on the air. When ON came out (Feb 2020) it had about 80 relevant spins. The first day Life Goes On came out (Nov 2020) it had 8. A bit after ON came out DJs trashed ARMY and BTS naming a million reasons why BTS wasn't getting spins when in the end, the answer was far more simple. Payola (as proven by the Rolling Stone) , racism and xenophobia rules the radio waves and there's only so much requesting can triumph.
I think people need to realize that racism is racism. It really doesn't matter if people mean to be racist or not. The thing is that they are. Racism has been normalized in our culture. It happens between individuals, but is also embedded in organizations and institutions through their policies, procedures and practices. In general, it may seem easier to recognize individual or interpersonal acts of racism: a slur made, a person ignored in a social or work setting, an act of violence. The thing is, "individual" racism is not created in a vacuum; it comes from a society's foundational beliefs and "ways" of seeing/doing things, and is manifested in organizations, institutions, and systems. The responses people have towards BTS is the product of a systematically racist and xenophobic society. A huge part of the problem is that us white people don't experience it. We don't live with it every day. We don't have to deal with the microaggressions, comments, looks, etc. What we see is a tiny percentage of the reality. It doesn't happen to us so we cannot comprehend how present and how bad it still is in North American culture.
BTS didn't just help put a spotlight on Kpop in the west, but it also helped put a spotlight on international music! With the power of the internet, so many countries have the ability to understand and fall in love with music that isn't in their native language; if they can do it, it makes you wonder what took us so long to do the same.
I guess you can start watching live perfromances like tiny desk, bts room live, bbc radio, mtv and MMA/MAMA performances. I would love to hear your comments on their live performances.
What it feels when you see your dear buddy of 15 years dismiss BTS just for their looks?? Oh..... the silent heartbreak and disbelief.. 😪 Like' dude, you are really my friend! Right?? Then you swallow all the bitterness and try to stay Normal. 😐😐😭😭
my experiences had been similar to how you describe your own, whereas most my friends may listen to indie or other types of music, tho tending to politely contemplate my more recent choice to excitedly dive into all things BTS... i mean, c'mon, the highly generous amount of perpetually intriguing content BTS put out into the universe, along w/ their overall fun + positive vibe, can undeniably keep one entertained for years! my friends/fam & i may listen to various music, including non-English (tho mostly European or Latin was typically the acceptable norm), but it was rare for any to consider non-American Asian artists for their playlists. BTS's current popularity, however, is changing mindsets. Several of my friends/fam members now tell me that their kids are into K-pop and are singing in Korean; a cousin of mine, who is a music director for a bay area school district, shared that he has a lot of kids who've expressed loving BTS, so he's added BTS songs to his repertoire - and I'm talking, not just the full English songs. it's a shift that, although there are many Kpop artists before BTS that may have only dreamed of breaking barriers, it's BTS (w/ the help of their powerful ARMY) that have arguably become an historic/legendary success story in their own right, even as they're still not fully accepted or granted the respect they deserve for their immense accomplishments. racism & xenophobia, sadly, have been ever-present in our supposed melting pot society, w/ spoon-fed ignorance that lays the ground work for a covert version of racism, one generation to the next... even our seemingly most open-minded, lifelong buddies are not impervious to it. sure, some may not realize that their instant aversion to these very talented artists may be stemming from a deeply rooted racism, but that's when we have to actively take on the mantel as educators, replacing ignorance w/ a broader sense of understanding & connectivity. in many ways, the language of deeper understanding & connectivity, is BTS's legacy.

Dr. Lee Jiyoung is awesome. She has some great stuff on the internet. Her and other academics put together Army Academic conferences and invite other academics that are Army but normally one would have problems to see normally. There a quite a few well named academics going to the one this year 😄 They will usually dive into something of BTS' and will use it as an example of some of their work or theories. The last one was put up on YT....just search for her name if anyone is interested, so I'm hoping this year's will be put up as well.
I really love your reactions, but I did have to laugh when you tried to give tips on radio requesting. No one is more expert in radio requesting than ARMY. I was part of the hundred of coordinated BTS ARMY radio request teams in the US from 2017-2019, and believe me we tried EVERYTHING to get DJs to play BTS. And you know what? They refused. Insulted us. Made team members cry. Hung up on us. Called the boys every slur and racist name you can think of. Literally cussed at us and yelled at us on a daily basis. Why? Because we dared to request, politely, that they play a single BTS track that had some Korean lyrics. We even sent food, flowers, and thank-you notes to DJs who gave the songs a single spin. And you know what? They didn't care at all. They still refused to give them spins. That kind of thing is only JUST now shifting, and only for their English tracks - and only because their label finally started helping. American DJs still refuse to play any BTS track that is not in English, regardless of its genre or sound or how much demand we clearly demonstrate. And even their English tracks still get played in the late-night hours instead of prime time. The racism I have personally seen ARMY and BTS experience at the hands of DJs is mind-blowing. So thank you for trying to help, but, believe me, radio today is a corporate-run system that has a closed door to anybody who isn't white, working with a powerful label behind them, or doing payola on a massive scale. Edit: Sorry if this sounds like I'm angry, but honestly, I still am angry about the way the US industry treats BTS. They're the biggest group in the world, but even their English tracks are being given less than 1/3 the average radio spins received in the first week by even mid-range American artists. It hugely impacts their charting strength, ARMY morale, and public perception of them in the US. And it freaking sucks.
Thank you for explaining your history and your experiences. It helps me better understand the journey BTS went through, ARMY went through, and you went through in getting BTS as big as they are, and as a baby ARMY still trying to understand and piece together their journey under a correct context, it means the world to me to be provided this information. Thank you, and I’m sorry you had to experience that.
None of my friends will give BTS a chance at all. I'm 49, most of my friends are around the same age and I guess they're stuck in their own bubble and aren't willing to change or have an open mind. Even my kids'friends are like that too. All of them are around 18-20. My kid's friends have slowly been getting in to BTS & stray kids at least. It's frustrating & insulting both to BTS and me. They act like I'm some kind of thirsty cougar because I like them, and while ofc I think they're beautiful, that's not why I like them, or my friends act like I'm too old to like a "boy band" . I think the reason Americans and people in the west look down on any group labeled as a boy band is automatically sus, like they expect BTS to be like backstreet boys. Boy band or boy group has a different connotation out here in the west as opposed to Asian countries. All male grps are a boy group and all female groups are called girl groups. I wish everyone could have an open mind and not be so rigid in their thinking. 💜
I just don't care anymore: stopped trying to explain why I like them (44 yo female), I just show how I like them - singing & dancing to their songs, whoever is curious asks. And then I smile and answer but I will not wear myself out doing it. They are losing out, I'll still be winning! 💜 Borahae, Jim & All ARMY
BTS's new album announcement for a 6.10.22 release date is definitely official! they announced it at the end of their last concert day in LV... could hardly believe it myself, but i was at that concert, screaming w/ the other 49,999-ish ARMY in attendance lol😋
I am curious about how long your Dream Team have been ARMY for and whether their ARMY/BTS experiences have been through Twitter or not because they may need to update you a bit more on what BTS and ARMY both went through between 2016-2019 concerning the constant (subtle and not-so-subtle) racist and xenophobic interactions we had with US radio djs, entertainment/music “journalists”, and the music industry in general. It still goes on, but luckily, because of (mainly POC/Black) Twitter ARMY sheer will and love for BTS during those years, they strategized and then organized many different types of grassroots campaigns to get BTS the exposure we felt they worked hard for and deserved, all while constantly fighting against the racism and xenophobia BTS faced at that time (and still do). Your hope is to be fully integrated into ARMY and help with BTS’ comeback? It’s not going to be on RUclips where you’ll get the info and experiences you want to make BTS’ next comeback a successful and enjoyable one - it’ll be on Twitter. Yes, we utilize the official mv’s dropped on RUclips to help chart singles but it’s because US radio won’t play BTS songs (unless they’re in English, and only minimally compared to other artists) and study streaming guides/rules on Spotify, AM, etc. to help chart as well. Life Goes On is a perfect example. Again, yes you get content on YT (and Instagram, TikTok, etc.) but the organizing, goal-setting, up-to-the-minute information on anything related to BTS, accurate lyric translations, deep-dives and breakdowns into the meaning of songs and album concept, analysis of BU, etc. is all done on Twitter the moment the single/album drops. You’ll also witness the ACTUAL racism and xenophobia that occurs as well because Twitter is where it circulates - and then there won’t be any question about the realities of BTS’ treatment in the US. Good luck.
I live in Canada and hear Dynamite, Butter and JK's Standing Next to You on the radio here sometime. I've heard it a few times in my Sobey's grocery store.
Wow, I only got to qatch you now but just like BTS I love how authentic and sincere you are💜🇵🇭,I am watching all your videos and subscribed☺️,please continue doing this, maybe you would like to check some Filipino singer as well, the Budakhel cover songs☺️.
the thing is, even people who don’t considerate themselves racist might behave as a racists in some cases. i don’t considerate myself racist, but maybe i did, i do or i’ll do or say smth racists. and that’s bc it’s so normalized in our culture that you may not notice it as what it is. the important thing it’s to recognize this behaves to prevent them
just because people dont "mean" to be racist, that doesnt mean theyre not being racist. racism is racism, and i really really dont say this to be bad or anything but what does a white man really know about racism. i hope we can all reflect on this more deeply, even more because we like a korean band that suffers so much from racism these days.
@@darlacooper7930 How is that racist? White people in Western culture and more specifically North American culture have never had to deal with the systematic racism that permeates our society. While it's true that any group of people can experience racial prejudice or discrimination, that is not racism. Racism refers to that prejudice in addition to the socialized power structures at play, and in our case white people are the ones who hold the power. As white people, we don't have to live with the slurs, looks, and discrimination that people of color do, so of course it's pretty much impossible for us to really, truly understand the full impacts of racism. Because we don't live with it every day, we tend to dismiss what we see as 'just an opinion" or "just a misinformed comment" as not racist, when it is. What Tess said is a fact. She's not saying Jim can't understand or is guilty of anything. She's not attacking him. She's simply stating the fact that as a white person, he's not necessarily the most qualified to comment on racism.
@@cathonbonbon9430 This is the problem with our society; people like you who gate-keep and quantify peoples experiences based off of an uncontrollable factor. You do not get to decide which level of racism is worse, you do not get to decide how much someone else is able to understand racism. Just because someone is a certain race does not mean that they have the same experiences that other people of that race faces. Her comment was racist because she was saying that because of his race, he could not speak on something. That because of his race, she views him as lesser in an area. No, racism is not dependent on it being on a large scale. Racism could be a throw away comment from some random at a convenience store. You are changing the definition of racism to fit you narrative and try to make something that is racist, not racist. That whole socialized power argument is a load of bullshit made up by racists, so that they would not be called out on their own racism. Racism is not complicated to understand, it is doing something, saying something, or treating someone differently based on their race. Stop gate-keeping, and judging people based off their race.
Jim please feel free to pause to read the live comments. Sometimes you miss out on conversations cos you get distracted reading the live comments. Armys don't mind you pausing more to talk 💜
There are many types of racism. The one against Asian men is rather pervasive and often dismissive. In retrospect, most of us haven't recognized the subtle yet impactful harm we've done.
I do understand the racism part, I was an army since 2015 and I’ve been through the radio-play hardships, we’ve seen radio hosts throw the albums out into trash cans or putting the album sample Bighit sent them on cheap sales and stuff like that. I think that really lacks respect to some degree. We’ve also heard lots of unfortunate comments from radio hosts, comparing bts to covid and saying Americans need a vaccination against them, this is not the only occasion when they got oppressed in such a rude way. People also think they say the N word although they’re singing in korean, It makes no sense to me. English isn’t the only language in the world, why would people think they’re singing the N word when it’s clearly in a different language? The same pronunciations could mean lots of different things, but some people don’t seem to get that idea. Bts often had to change their lyrics during performances in America and cancel the “Naega” pronunciations because of this
when people say "we are no racist but r u fr wtf?" HAHAHA so tbh racism and xenophobia is so intgrated and internilized that they dont even realize that they are :D so they need EDUCATION :D. thats what lacks in united states and a lot of countries AWARENESS :D

But there are so Many countrys where you hear all the big english Hits on the Radio and some spanish music, as soon as it is any Others language there is almost None. Like I remember the Mayor onehit Wonder in french or similar but thats it. Like why
I don’t think anyone wants to think of themselves as racist. Some racist views are quite engrained to the point people see it “normal”. Specially if no one calls it out
It is xenophobic to look down on other music because language, mostly because American is a place where English is not the only language, and there's people around yelling to others "Speak English!"

“I know these people are not racist but…” No, they are racist. Here is the thing about racism that many people don’t realize, especially people with privilege. ~You can be racist and not really be aware of it. ~ In fact, it’s more common that overt and acknowledged racism. It’s called unconscious racism. It is actually impossible to come from a colonizer country or a colonized country (which is most of the world) and not carry some of these unconscious ideas and biases. They are baked into the culture and instilled into you passively and actively just by the daily experience of the culture. Most racism is like this. It’s institutional, built into systems (like schools, advertising and media, entertainment, policing, government, housing and banking practices, redlining, etc.) and into everyday accepted social practices. Just like ideas about what are gender “norms” or what is polite/rude behavior etc are culturally different and mostly unconsciously absorbed. It’s even in people’s unconscious attitudes about their own race, as many studies have proven, which becomes internalized self hate in minorities. The saddest experiment I ever saw was kids asked which identical but for skin tone baby doll was “prettier” and even the black kids picked the white doll. It’s a problem to only think about racism in terms of Nazis and Klansmen and self avowed racists, because while that is, of course, reprehensible, it’s all these baked in cultural practices and institutions that perpetuate the systems which must be acknowledged and dismantled to really make forward progress on racism (or misogyny, or homophobia, etc.) We all have these things in us and it can be violently jarring to become aware of them. They can go against everything you think you are and how you identify yourself. They can cause you to have an identity or existential crisis even. But it’s not your fault or my fault or these musical friends of yours fault that these things are in us. They are in our culture and we are a product of that. It takes work to become aware of hidden and unconscious biases and privileges and then to shift your thinking. Some people are not prepared or able or interested in doing that work. It’s possible your friends are misogynistic or just musically gatekeeping, but it’s highly statistically unlikely that their attitudes don’t also stem, at least partly, from unconscious racism that they absorbed with culture.
We don't know. Joon never said it was about 'his' ex girlfriend. They said it was about breakup. There were no specific details mentioned... if I remember correctly.
I don't buy multiples but I always buy a kpop album when I see it and can afford it. Just in hopes that it would be more normal to see them. I just got a DPR and CL album. Major fucking score. There is progress.
Sorry but the song choice for the TikTok was bad bad....like not the song itself but the vibe of the video and song don't go well with each other imo. Please take it as my own opinion not trying to be rude.

@@itsskye003 I see. Thank you!
You said it very well💜💜💜
well stated.
Like' dude, you are really my friend!

You fucking preach, girl
I love BTS so much💜💜💜
Thank you so much for sharing this to us your co ARMY who can't make to watch live. God bless 🥰💜💜💜
That Hodor reference made me both laugh and cry 😂
Thx for the reaction.. Just one thing I noticed, I hope you can pause the video when you read the comments so that you don't miss anything.. ;)

Wow, I only got to qatch you now but just like BTS I love how authentic and sincere you are💜🇵🇭,I am watching all your videos and subscribed☺️,please continue doing this, maybe you would like to check some Filipino singer as well, the Budakhel cover songs☺️.
the thing is, even people who don’t considerate themselves racist might behave as a racists in some cases. i don’t considerate myself racist, but maybe i did, i do or i’ll do or say smth racists. and that’s bc it’s so normalized in our culture that you may not notice it as what it is. the important thing it’s to recognize this behaves to prevent them
just because people dont "mean" to be racist, that doesnt mean theyre not being racist. racism is racism, and i really really dont say this to be bad or anything but what does a white man really know about racism. i hope we can all reflect on this more deeply, even more because we like a korean band that suffers so much from racism these days.
saying "What does a white man really know about racism" is a racist statement. Do not claim to be against something and then do that something.
@@darlacooper7930 its actually not lol
@@darlacooper7930 reverse racism DO NOT exist. You can not be racist towards a white person.
I'ma go with tattoo, get a tattoo!
방탄소년단 대견해~💜
The worst are the people who say they have never heard of them in 2024.
Bts often had to change their lyrics during performances in America and cancel the “Naega” pronunciations because of this
there is still rise of bangtan chapter 21 :D
when people say "we are no racist but r u fr wtf?" HAHAHA so tbh racism and xenophobia is so intgrated and internilized that they dont even realize that they are :D so they need EDUCATION :D. thats what lacks in united states and a lot of countries AWARENESS :D
I tried to present bts to my family and friends but no one is intrested...also here in my country you dont hear bts on radio ..i dont get why
I don't understand how "The Algorithm" (said in mystical voice) works, but someone said comments help, so here's a comment for "The Algorithm"
That rise of bantgan going to end till the creator do more I recommend react to mma and mama and lives

You know what I Dont get? I've Seen so Many lokal Pop Stars Switch to english and No longer sing in their native language.
Specially if no one calls it out
dude, the ear muffs were to black out the fan noise.
It is xenophobic to look down on other music because language, mostly because American is a place where English is not the only language, and there's people around yelling to others "Speak English!"
Hello I'm a new subscriber.can you please make ur Taer album video available in ur twich by removing da copy write videos so we can watch ur reaction to it..

Obviu they will say they aren't racist :v call it what it is, is ignorance also
“I know these people are not racist but…”
No, they are racist.
Here is the thing about racism that many people don’t realize, especially people with privilege.
~You can be racist and not really be aware of it. ~
In fact, it’s more common that overt and acknowledged racism.
It’s a problem to only think about racism in terms of Nazis and Klansmen and self avowed racists, because while that is, of course, reprehensible, it’s all these baked in cultural practices and institutions that perpetuate the systems which must be acknowledged and dismantled to really make forward progress on racism (or misogyny, or homophobia, etc.)
We all have these things in us and it can be violently jarring to become aware of them.
Ok but OOT, "What Am I To You" and "Danger" ,may be the only BTS songs that inspired from Namjoon's ex girl friend 😅
We don't know. Joon never said it was about 'his' ex girlfriend. They said it was about breakup. There were no specific details mentioned... if I remember correctly.
they arent racist but they're saying those things?
I don't buy multiples but I always buy a kpop album when I see it and can afford it. Just in hopes that it would be more normal to see them. I just got a DPR and CL album. Major fucking score. There is progress.
For the record saying the Asian thing is RACIST. Please do not defend it
Radio WONT play BTS. Everything has been done and beyond
It is racism Jim, racism and xenophobia.
Sorry but the song choice for the TikTok was bad bad....like not the song itself but the vibe of the video and song don't go well with each other imo. Please take it as my own opinion not trying to be rude.
alright. i am all caught up to all your bts videos. i had to binge watch over the weekend until today. ^u^
