  • Hello! This video shows you how to make Abak Atama which is Calabar style Banga soup. Banga soup is a Nigerian soup made from palm fruit juice. Abak Atama is popular among the people of Cross River state and Akwa Ibom state. Atama leaves are used in this particular Banga soup hence the name Abak Atama.
The ingredients used for this Calabar style Banga soup are as follows
    Ingredients
    8 Cups fresh palm fruits
    1 Cup Atama leaves
    1kg Meat
    1 Dried catfish
    2 Cups periwinkle
    1/2 Cup crayfish
    1 Onion
    6 Fresh pepper
    1 Uyayak(Aidan fruit)
    1 Cow skin(Pomo)
    3 Seasoning cubes
    Salt to taste
    Water
    Things to note:
If the meat and cow skin you are using are tough, let them cook properly before adding the palm fruit juice as the time it takes for the soup to be ready is not enough to properly cook and soften the meat or pomo(cow skin)
Abak Atama is similar to Ofe Aku and Delta Banga soup, the only difference is the spices and leaves used.
This Calabar style Banga soup is one of the best Nigerian soups you can taste. It has a unique taste, It is very delicious.
Abak Atama soup can be eaten with pounded yam, Semovita, fufu, Eba etc.

Please next time put your periwinkles in a bigger container to be able to watch it properly. Secondly, cook the periwinkles separate and remove the white foams that forms on top and remnant of diets, pick them with your hands into the soup don't pour it inside bc of some of the broken shells, then add it to your soup. Pour away the water.

This method is new. The way mum thought us how to prepare banga atama soup is after extraction of the palm kernel oil juice.
You put it to boil first before adding your ingredients not ingredients first before the banga juice but nice all the same. Hope it taste the same way with this method.
