Roku literally set the pace for the rest of the series. Until now, Aang thought he had more time but Roku said "Nah, kid, it's go time. You have roughly 8 months to a year to master all the elements and beat this super powerful man or else the world will end." That's knowledge and wisdom which is not nothing, and if he gave him all the answers, it would not be Aang's journey. And he helped him out in the most bad ass way, so Roku was very helpful
@mentholnewport he only knew about defeating the firelord from bumi. He knew nothing about the comet. Every time until then, he was all about having fun and taking his time going to the north pole. Roku basically told him "you better hurry tf up, there's a comet coming so you have a time frame now".
8 months? It's more like 6 months unless the calendar and astronomy of the Avatar world is different than our own. Every half-year is a solstice. They just had a Winter Solstice and Aang has to beat Ozai by the Summer Solstice.
@@Un1234l Roku didn't say he had until the Summer Solstice though - which would be in June in our calendar. He said the end of Summer, which could be the end of August or mid September depending on which system you're using.

Aang asking the Firesage whether he had personally known Roku is one of those certified "how old do you think I am, kid?"-moments when some five year old assumes every adult is ancient.
For slowing down the ship, they were using some sort of engine to propel them forward. So by cutting the engines, they would still drift forward but would start to slow down. He didn't mention anything about dropping anchor, but even if they did, it takes a second for an anchor to snag on something on the sea floor. So in reality, they would probably still hit Zuko's ship, but they put them close to raise suspense, lol. It's possible that they are able to put the engines in reverse, but I don't know if they had that technology, and even if they did, Zhao commanded they cut the engines not reverse them.
Oh I adore Iroh but don’t forget he was a famous general of the fire nation. He did hurt and probably killed lots of people when he had his old position.

Wow this channel has come far. I watched your arcane reactions and you guys were adorable and awkward especially ange. Watched aot, jjk, ds, chainsaw, the glory, haikyuu so many. So many! Hope you guys grow more because you deserve it all
Every time I watch this episode, I hope Shayu and the other sages survived til the end of the war. None of them deserved punishment from the Fire Nation honestly.
I’ll go ahead and say without spoilers: anything you can imagine that involves manipulating an element can be done in this universe. Skill of the bender is determined by experience, environment, training, practice, discipline, creativity, and ingenuity. I still love to hear your theories and discussions, though. It’s fun to see you both asking questions the writers wanted the audience in general, to be asking. It’s all purposeful, and what I love the most about the storytelling in this show. They want you to be curious, because they have the reveals ready to go for the perfect time. Edit: I interpret this episode as using Avatar Roku’s first appearance to start the time clock and raise the stakes. Aang now knows he doesn’t have years to master the elements and end the war, but mere months. I also remember seeing this episode for the first time as a kid and thinking “oh that’s cool information, but cartoons I watch never have an overarching story like that… so I’ll never see it”. All other animated shows on Nickelodeon at the time like SpongeBob, Rugrats, etc had all been running for years without ending. My kid brain just assumed this show would never progress like every other cartoon on the network at the time. But every episode from here forward blew my mind because story just kept happening!! 😂 and it was getting better and better every episode. That was such a special time to experience the show, I was the same age as Aang 💛🧡 There was nothing else like it, and there hasn’t been since. FMAB is the only other series that made me feel close to how this one did. It really stays with you. Can’t wait for you to see THAT episode coming up 🥲
I remember another reactors reaction about complaining about how certain subsets of bendings werent done and it should be able and they interpreted it as a flaw.
@@dustyacer2556 you can interpret it as a flaw. I just don’t really agree. I think the bending and how it progresses are important to the storytelling and the power scaling of the show. I don’t believe exploring every aspect of bending possible would necessarily serve the story they were trying to tell. The bending getting more interesting as the show progresses directly correlates to the characters and their personal growth. They learn new techniques based on circumstances or story beats. Trying to shove glassbending, or some other weird subset, where it doesn’t make sense seems unnecessary to me. Plus, as we learn later on, some bending techniques should neither be discovered nor practiced.
@@dustyacer2556 lol oh, I’m sorry. It’s her I disagree with then 😂 And I want to stress, I don’t think it’s wrong that she and I might think differently about how bending is portrayed. That’s what I was kind of trying to say in my OP. I think the writers want people to be curious about the possibilities and limits of the magic system of the story. I was trying to give spoiler free reassurance as well about the bending getting more intricate as the characters see more of the world. Don’t even get me started about how the 100 year war probably drastically affected knowledge of bending across all 4 nations… it’s just so brilliant how much thought was put into it, I could go on forever 🥲
That Zuko had been banished was old info that you guys talked over in episode 3. I commented on the video for chapter that I thought you'd missed it. Guess I was right.
The purpose of the meeting was to establish a connection. Also, very few people know about the comet, when it comes back and what that means. So, Roku clues Aang in on a huge threat. Yes, ships can't stop like that. Even reversing engines wouldn't happen that quickly or you run the risk of damaging your propeller and shaft. Yes, Roku was angry at the saves. They are supposed to serve the Avatar and help maintain the balance. Truth be told, only the Avatar seems to be able to maintain both the connection to people and the separation that allows them to guide the nations to peace. The weight on an Avatar's shoulders is tremendous.
4:26 A battleship going from "full speed ahead" to "engines full reverse" needs more than a mile to come to a stop... so no, ships can't stop on a dime like that. Also, two ships passing close to each other will be sucked together by changes in water pressure (RMS Olympic collided with HMS Hawke 'cause of this) so Admiral Zhao's two lines of battleships sailing in opposite directions would likely all smash into each other if anyone attempted that kind of formation in the real world.
water drag is always present When they cut the engine driving force will cease to exist and the only force existing will be friction thus it will start to slow down immediately
The ships may have begun to slow immediately, but they were animated as coming to a complete halt, which would not have happened. Their ships would have collided in reality, but its fine, not everything has to be accurate.
