Note: Added form factor filter (vertical, horizontal, clamshell) and Plays 90% filter (Under PS1 (older devices, can't play PS1), PS1 & Under, N64/DC, PSP, GC/Wii, PS2, Switch as tiers.
Great work! - much appreciated :)
Rg505 doesn't show it plays up to 90% PSP
@@69Akuma69 I'll add to list to fix, ty!
This is awesome. It brought to my attention some options I hadn't considered before in my current search for a new handheld.
Missing:
- 12GB and 16 GB Odin 2 Pro and Max variants
Notes:
- The RAM filter sorts alphabetically instead of by actual size
- would be nice to see presence of analog stick presence and type (hall, etc.)
- would be nice to see presence of L2/R2 shoulders and type (hall, etc.)
- would be nice to a see D-Pad vs. Analog location on left (Top D-pad vs. Bottom D-Pad)
- would be nice to see ABXY bs BAYX layout (Western vs Eastern layout)
- would be nice to see non-game button count (home, Back, Select, Start, Guide, etc.)
- would be nice to see number of USB-C ports, top vs. bottom
- the specs column is too skinny causing text wrapping and mismatched rows when doing compare
A filter for either "Plays 90% of this system" or "Plays 100% of this system" would be pretty sweet
You could do a plays most games list but a plays 100% of a system list would be difficult to do considering the nature of emulation. Plus I don't think anyone has enough time to test all systems on all devices to put together such a list. Just think of how fast some of these company's put out new devices too.
This is a brilliant idea!
@@shawn82052 yeah it would be more like 99% I guess. You can definitely say that RK3566 devices do all ps1 games but maybe to stay on the safe side you can say 99% I guess
Added!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Super nice you're addressing our feedback! Can i ask you why the rk3566 devices (353 series, X55, RGB30 etc) are not in the DC/N64 90% play list? I found that mine (a 353VS) basically plays almost all the N64 and DC catalogue very nicely with very few exceptions.
On the verge of buying a handheld so this is perfectly timed 😊
Well, I have some filter idea straightaway.
I was searching for a horizontal handheld without analog sticks. So a filter which covers the presence, absence and position of sticks would be superb. :)
This is pretty cool. Would be neat to have a controls section that denotes whether something has hall or regular sticks, an accurate Dpad, or a touch screen.
Little suggestion: a filter for vertical vs horizontal handhelds would be nice too :). Anyhow, great tool! thanks for the effort
Adding!
@@JoeysRetroHandheldsnice!
Great idea, Joey! Love it!!
Excellent work Joey 👏
This is fantastic! Great job, my dude.
This is amazing stuff Joey!
Thank you for your time, this was much needed!
Such a good idea executed very well. Mad props.
Exactly what I have been wanting. I have a VERY specific set of features that I want in the two handhelds that I want to own. My pocket model, and my backpack model. This will make it easy.
This is so useful - thank you!
Very nice, thanks for putting it together.
Great tool man! Well done! 🥰
This is great, very helpful!
Awesome work!!
This is awesome. Good job man
Yeah this was super helpful, I've been curious what handhelds have hdmi and bluetooth.
Nice work joey! This is a sweet tool for the community 😎👌!
That’s amazing! I always wanted some page like it
great content as always! Awesome idea, this helps a lot (btw watching while playing on my odin2)
Well done sir. Love this
GOAT. Was looking for this.
Awesome. I've been juggling videos and websites to figure out what I really want.
I thought about making a site like this for years. Kudos to you for making it! 🎉
Excellent work my dude!
Thanks sir!
Alright, this is dope. I salute thee good sir, this is pretty tremendous work.
This is super awesome thanks. Choosing my next device literally keeps me up at night.
Well that's friggin awesome! Nice work on this!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice idea
Nice work! A controller layout filter would be great (xbox/ps/no thumbsticks)
Great! Thank you!
Joey, you did it man...
wow this is a great tool for research on handhelds!!
good job joey
This is dope!
Damn fine job! 👍👍
Good work sir 👍
VERY COOL
This new tool looks great. I inputed my requirements and ended up being recommended a Powkiddy X28. It looks like an excellent choice; big screen, reasonable T618 performance, Android, grown-up aesthetics, and is seemingly well priced based on the specs. I've always thought that modern-day Powkiddy is primarily a purveyor of cheapo Linux powered handhelds, so I'm surprised to see something recent from them that ticks most of my boxes. Good job, filter. And good job, Joey.
Additions: I couldn't make the original Odins come up during my search. They're still available direct from AYN at new lower prices. The base Snapdragon 845 model is now priced competitively with the Pocket 4 Pro and RG556.
I'll have to add them in, I'll put it on the list! Thank you!
Add a scale of "emulation power" to know up to what whan each decive emulate and a rough estimate of how much of a console repertory can be emulated, "plays 80% of PS1" for example
Great work, I think a filter for emulated consoles (divided by generation) would really add to its appeal
This is excellent Joey, hopefully it gets promoted, maybe share it with other RUclipsrs and in some of the popular discords (of you haven't already)
There a lot of choices out there this should help narrow down decisions with a lot less trial & error 😊
That's the goal!
@@JoeysRetroHandheldsBack from your Trimui Smart Pro Starter Setup Guide, I have some questions:
1. If I start from scratch, will the bios files come with the base package or the 5040 file, or do I need to find my own bios files?
2. If I decide to clone the Stock SD card information onto a branded SD card, do I still need to format the branded SD card as FAT32?
@@dylanhile358 Can't recall if bios is included. No, cloning clones the format as well.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks for that information. I'm looking into getting one, and I'm trying to figure out if I should just buy one with an SD card or not. Do you have any preferences on what way is easier, starting from scratch or cloning?
Personally, I would like a sive categories: pocketable, hybrid pocketable, packable/travel, and home. You can't tell the size by looking at them. When I purchased my first portable, the rg353m, I was looking for the most power and features in my pocket.
This is sweet
That's awesome! Im so confused at this point.
I'd love to have a "D-pad position" option (top or bottom).
... and perhaps even a "clicky mushy" D-pad slider :)
D-Pad position is great! Adding to the list. Other would be a bit more difficult.
Cool! - yeah, you're right.
Another perhaps even harder one would be lag/latency. But I think that's sort of included in your comprehensive OS filter option.
Suggestion adding your recommended rating. Like maybe a scale of 5 stars 🌟 ? 5 stars would be like S tier 4 could A tier etc ? Then people could easily filter by ranking best of the best
I'll add to the to do!
Brilliant job Joey! Amazing idea and will be a great help to lots of people. Not sure how easy this will be but I would love an equivalence filter for 4:3 content. As an example what size does a Retroid Pocket 4 or Odin 2 display 4:3 content compared to say a native 4:3 3.5inch screen. The vast majority of retro games display in 4:3 so comparing 16:9 handhelds is sometimes difficult.
I believe this already exists. Lemme look for a link
I think this is what you want? shauninman.com/utils/screens/
Thanks Joey that's exactly what I needed! Keep up the good work!
I don't how useful this would be, but think a community review score could help
You're a damn genuis, bro
After months of doing research and trying some of these different handhelds, i went back to the ps vita and bought a new aqua blue vita from japan for 230 dollar on eBay.
A minor gripe/bug but when you activate the filters, the price filter automatically raises the minimum price on the scale to the lowest price of the devices available, which is fine, but if you specify a maximum price, when you turn other filters off, it doesn't reset the price filter. So say you want to see devices which are $200 or lower & then add a filter to see which devices can run PSP for example, the system will create a filter with a maximum cost of $200 and a minimum for whatever the lowest cost device will retail at. The problem is that the filter will not reset after you remove the filter so even if you remove the "can play PSP" filter, the cost will be stuck at the created filter.
so if the cheapest device is $100, when you ask for devices for playing PSP & cost less than $200, it will create a filter for devices costing $100~200 but when you remove the PSP filter, that cost one remains so you no longer see any device with a price of sub $100 unless you remove or manually edit that cost filter.
Let me look into that, appreciate the details there!
Any chance you can link or, or work in retrosizer onto this in the future? Feel like that would be super helpful.
Hm, I'll have to think on it.
Thanks Joey! The handheld picker helped me decide to get the Trimui Smart Pro. On your guide, the recommended charge block is 5v/3A, where the Trimui recommends 5v/1.5A. Will this be okay for my longterm battery life as long as I don't fully charge it? Or are there any cheaper charging solutions that would be adequate? Thanks!
Yep that's fine.
I think k it’s a great tool.
I filtered using: 16:9, 4 and 8 gb ram, there are 7 results, but when looking at the HDMI filter, there's only 1 for no HDMI and 2 for HDMI, you may need to check your tags for some of the handhelds. Other than that, it seems like it's working well.
Hm, I just did that same filter and it was (1) No (6) Yes for HDMI.
I'll see if I can replicate, thanks!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds I just tried it again, I'm on mobile (Chrome) & it's working now. I cleared cookies & cache before trying again, maybe that was the issue.
Also, labeling which portables are "big hands" approved.
Great vid joey but some of those prices might need a bit of adjusting😂
Any specific examples?
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds trimui smart pro for $80
Hey Joey, the buy now didnt quite work for the two i tried (odin 2 and rp4p)
Could be adblock?
Can't open the link
Wow, who did your CSS?
Wordpress theme + some tweaks myself.
I've ordered XU10, as the RUclipsrs I trust said it's got surprisingly good controls and DC performance. Not sure if I made a mistake, but that one isn't in the list
I'll add it in tomorrow :)
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds new to the channel, just saw you have a video too. Thanks
I would definitely merge all the different Android versions into one category, no one really cares if the handheld is android 12 or 13 when all emulators will run the same.
RGB10MAX3 has HDMI right?
Whoops, good catch!
Why isn’t the sf2000 listed
"Can you please add SF2000?"
"I sure can!"
the page turns white when im trying to compare stuff, sorry if this was bougth up before >_
Could be your adblock?
Powkiddy X55 missing??
Nope! I see it.
I love it, great work! As for features you could add, how about some sort of wizard to pick a handheld. Check a few boxes based on what metrics are important to you, like which systems you plan to emulate, battery life, screen aspect, etc., and the wizard suggests a handheld or two that fit the criteria. *SPOILER ALERT* No matter which options you pick, it always recommends an AYN Odin 2. I kid, I kid... but no, seriously just have it recommend the Odin 2 no matter what, lol.
Does your list include things like white lists for games/apps?
I ask because some devices might not be in a white list so a particular game won't install but other handhelds might be.
I'll take the Odin 2 as an example. As great as it is, it's crippled in some ways like games not being compatible even though it's powerful enough to run said games. Wreckfest is not compatible with the Odin 2 but is compatible with my Retoid Pocket 2 (though it's not powerful enough to run it)
I have a feeling my important comment is being ignored.
My comment is valid because let's say I don't own an Odin 2 and I use your list to help me decide what handheld is best for me. I choose the Odin 2, receive it and then find out half the android games I want to install don't install.
That renders this list to be completely useless
Hi, this is not planned at all no. If that's useless to you, that's unfortunate. Have a great day.
Is there a handheld out there that plays switch games? But price around $300 & below?
Maybe the switch itself 😅
