- Grant Hanley becomes Birmingham City's first signing in the 2025 January transfer window, followed closely by the acquisition of Phil Neumann. Grant joins on a six month contract whilst Phil will join his new team mantes in the summer having signed a pre-contract agreement to come to Blues from German Bundesliga 2 side Hannover 96. Both player will strengthen and provide additional cover to the Birmingham defense. Grant will be hoping to help propel Blues out of EFL League One which will allow Phil to join an EFL Championship team during the summer.

Hannover fan here. I am absolutely gutted to loose Phil. He can outrun everyone, he likes to press forward and run deep into the opponents half. He is so settled in the back and always gets his foot in there in the end. His headers aren’t too bad as well. Definitely a gem, you guys have got there now. I pray you get promoted though🙏, because I would be gutted to see him play in League 1, especially if we manage to get promoted this year (we have the best defence in the league by a mile). Hi both. I like the words you chose re Hanley. " it was a necessary signing". Agreed.. It appears to be a marque signing getting Nueman. Strengthening the defence for the run in is very sensible. Thank you for an in depth piece of homework re these 2 defenders.

Another great podcast guys. Phil Neumann is a fantastic signing for next season and Grant Hanley is a very useful signing for the remainder of this season in league 1 - just what we need to stand up to any bullyboy tactics we may encounter from some of our rivals in this league 🙂

Neumann looks a really good player, credit to the recruitment team for getting his signature, adds to an already strong defensive look. Hanley is a solid signing for this season and will likely be involved a fair bit....may need a few more in, depending on how long those currently injured are out for, would hate for injuries to disrupt the season, touchwood so far so good ...good stuff guys KRO

Neumann can play in the lcb role surprisingly. I hope that doesn’t mean we don’t sign Davies.

2 good signings for us, because Hanlon will be a great cover with all the injuries.
This league is real tough,I have never known a injury list,start at full back every player has had knocks right up to the forward line.
This league is definitely a lot more physical that I expectec. The Exeter game was becoming a joke! KRO :)
Grant Hanley is a massive upgrade on Sanderson.
We like old school defenders who take no nonsense and get stuck in and Hanley certainly ticks this box. KRO! :)
Different types in terms of style but I prefer my cb’s to be tough and strong in the air

I reckon Davies is looking at the games against the likes of Barnsley and Charlton and fancies a Hanley style defender moreso than a Davies. Next season with Neumann and Klarer, whatever division we’re in is going to be sublime. KRO

I think Sanderson wanted to go I wish him best of luck. Hanley is a good cover probably playing for a contract for next season with his experience in championship. Neumann will be a good signing by the look of him players will sign as the club is well run and good place to be. We’re a completely different club and players want to be part of it the scouting system is obviously working well what a great time to be a blues supporter long way from the days of Steve whitton KRO

Neumann looks quality and grant Hanley stalwart defender good championship experience as well. Physical presence. Neumann a top class centre back plenty of pace.. sorry not keen on Sanderson particularly.. I still rated Ivan Sonjic .. KRO

At the end of last season many of us expressed our disappointment on this brilliant channel about how dismal some of our recruitment had been. Well no such complaints now, Neumann an excellent signing long term and Hanley will do his bit too this season and possibly beyond.
Chatting in the pub with a few mates the other night. Is it just a coincidence that Spurs are struggling after the departure of CD, even allowing for their injury problems?
A few words about the Wrexham game. I think there's a case for starting Jukey and Dykes to batter their centre backs and really give them a hard time with Alfie and Jay coming on later. As for McClean when will something be done about him? I complained to the EFL and Wrexham about him when we played them at home prior to the 50th anniversary of the Birmingham Pub Bombings.
Finally nothing on the BCFC website about the passing of our former full back Jimmy Calderwood. Saw him play for us many times. RIP Jimmy. KRO

To be honest I really don’t like all of the hype around the Wrexham game. At the end of the day it’s just a football match although an important one in the context of the top of the league. I have no issue with James McClean’s attitude as a physical footballer, however it is the way he conducts himself and the things that he says above that which are not acceptable. He should just play his football and keep his mouth shut. Anyway I will be glad when this one is done so that both us and Wrexham can focus on the rest of our seasons. KRO!
Thats the only fan ive heard that has said speed is not his strong point😮
Thank you very much for your comment which is greatly appreciated. It wasn’t that he hasn’t got speed it is the fact that like most defenders they are not usually as fast as wingers and strikers. He certainly has speed for a centre half. KRO!
Personally not a fan of hanley. But in terms of a short contract till neumann comes in im happy. Dont think he will stay past the summer though

Hi Gary & Matt , I'd have kept Sanderson , don't understand why we've bought Hanley in , as for Neumann that's going to be a great signing ,at the expense of Davis which is a shame ,I'd like him signed up .
Thanks Tony and fair point about Sanderson but clearly Davies doesn't fancy him which has led to this move. We also are a huge fan of Davies at the back. Absolutely solid. KRO! :)
I think Sanderson going out on loan was as much his decision as it was Blues. He wasn't our first choice and at times he wasn't even making the bench, so it came as no surprise with him going out on loan.
Like you I like Sanderson, but many fans don't and that will be to do with his performances on the pitch last season and his behaviour off it too.
I think the nail in his coffin was the Northampton game in which he was made the scapegoat by a number of fans for the disappointment of drawing that game. Unfairly made the scapegoat in my opinion, but we all know what football can be like and how different people see things.
I must point out that in no way do I condone what he did off the pitch last season. Luckily, the only damage that his behaviour caused was to his own reputation and he's never really recovered from that despite being kept on by the club.
Then you have the fantastic form of Klarer and Davies who have become the first choice pairing which has resulted in a change of position for Bielik and Sanderson found himself way down the pecking order.
With regards to Davies i think and hope that we will sign him on a permanent basis. I would like to see us play with 3 centre backs in some games and he's a great player to have who can start in a 2 or a 3 or have on the bench. Mix things up a bit.
