ALL IN LINE is published by the New York Review of Comics and is available wherever cool books are sold. I totally didn't know they also published Steinberg's most important cartoon book, THE LABYRINTH. And I forgot to mention ALL IN LINE was Steinberg's first book. That's why I prefer to write reviews rather than do these video reviews... but who reads reviews anymore?
Don't forget, I have some cool stuff coming out before too long, including THE ART OF MILT GROSS VOLUME 1 and an essay in the new Sunday Press book on Jimmy Swinnerton (along with Pete Maresca, Michael Tisserand, and Eddie Campbell).
You are the first person I ever heard say outloud the word/place Angoulume though I've read it in print for decades. I never knew how it was pronounced.
I love Saul Steinburg's work, he found a way of drawing that was imitative of Art, not just cartooning. His work sometimes has a hint of surrealism in a stripped down way.
I'm not familiar with Josh's work. Why won't these young cartoonists send me their work for free or trade? I understand, xeroxing and stamps cost so much more then they did back in the day.
Thanks, Jeff. I learned how to pronounce "Angoulême" from a few folks who have gone there, so credit goes to them (I haven't had the opportunity to go yet). Josh has been doing comics for over 25 years, but I also miss the old trading comix thru the mails culture. I love that Josh Simmons has some of the old zine culture spirit in his work. I included him here because I think it's fantastic he's working in the single-image gag comic format... not many do, anymore. Someday, with luck, I'll get out a retrospective collection of his earlier work. Email me at paultumey@gmail.com with your addy and I'll send stamps and money for your latest (I may have an extra copy of my last zine, "Biscuit Dogs," I can send, as well, if you want).
