- Greetings All! On Today's video I try a scientifical experiment. Can you make a quilt out of old upholstery fabric samples?
In this video I do raw-edge applique with flexi-fuse fusible webbing, available here: flexifuse.com/
I am blown away by your imagination. A 74 year old granny thinks you are amazing as an artist. Your quilt blocks may hang in a modern museum one day.
Dave! I liked when you said, "It doesn't matter, we are making a goofy looking quilt on ugly 70's upholstery fabric. It will be fine!" Thank you for remingding me that this whole thing is supposed to be fun!
This is the grooviest thing I’ve seen since 1973!!!!
I love how your mind works!! Bringing all these disparate things together in a pop culture marriage of the last 50 years
I love the indie dreamcore vibe of this quilt, so cool!
Dave, you are weird! And i mean this in the sweetest way! Dave, you are a genius! I absolutely love this quilt!!! Keep doing what you do.
Your carpet matches that 70’s orange. No wonder I loved your rug!!!!!
Collage on fabric! So fun!
Love your channel. If you do applique frequently, buying a silicone pressing sheet is well worth the cost. (Also called a Teflon mat.) The glue won't stick and you can layer applique pieces on the mat, peel them off as one piece and put them on your project.
More "it'll be fine, we're just doing this for fun" ethic in the quilting world please! Absolutely love this quilt - my favourite block is the one with the eyes (maybe I'm just tired, but my initial reaction was "wow that's quite an out there design for the 70s!")
Looking forward to seeing more of what you create!
Once again I'm just mind blown and absolutely WOWED. I think the hardest part is getting over the fear factor and then being able to have controlled chaos.
yet another NATIONAL GALLERY EXHIBIT PIECE! Stunning!
He is one of the best quilt artists I've seen
A friend was at a church sale today and bought me 2 huge totes full of upholstery samples for $3. Your video is much needed inspiration!
This project of yours has inspired me to look at my fabric very differently which has blown my mind. So out of the box thinking with the combos that trigger my curiosity and delight my senses. So happy I found your channel, totally hooked now.
I'm so glad!! And welcome to the craft room 💁♂️😜👨🏻
Me to I just found you.
You’re a total loon of the absolute BEST kind. Love this.
Dave, I love watching your creative process! Several times I’ve thought, “0kay he’s just making a mess now,” but then in a few minutes you’ve turned out something genius!! My favorite might be the one with the plane cutouts. So cool. Loved it. And your mom’s “not-orphan” blocks-turned out amazing!! Thanks for sharing your process with us!!
Wow. I haven’t been this inspired in a long time. I used to work at a design showroom, and they throw away all their discontinued fabric. I couldn’t stand that, so consequently I have So.Many.Upholstery.Samples. This is so so good. It’s like the fabric equivalent of the people who paint monsters on thrift store art.
Your art is amazing. I love that whole stack of 70's fabric!!
OMG! You are my new favorite quilter! Your imagination and quirkiness know no bounds! So glad I found your channel. Keep them coming!
Thank you so much!
I have only made one quilt in my life. A queen size memory/photo/story quilt for my granddaughter. 💯 hand sewn. A month ago I started on a quilt for my 30 year old son, using his old “gangsta” hoodies and it’s a puzzle quilt. I’m not even measuring blocks. It’s really fun. I expected it to go slow because the fabric is so thick and had to have a stabiliser. The thing that is challenging me is that one of the hoodies has the most beautiful embroidery on the entire sleeves. It is so thick and hand sewing it challenging. This video of yours was really inspiring to me
Your sense of color and line is phenomenal
Batman with strawberries! I love it! Your freestyle way of working is fantastic, and one which I use also, along with my more traditional bag making. Keep up the inspiring funkiness ❤️
That was the most fun improv work I've ever seen! What a great quilt.
Wow, thank you!
I love this!! You are a so much fun to watch and your willingness to experiment and play with your fabrics is truly inspiring! You have given this old girl a shot in the arm to bust out and put things together in a new way. Thanks for sharing your creativity with the world. :)
I love everything that you did in this video! You are my new hero. I can just see the quilt snobs turning blue over some of the hijinks you get up to. But I feel like your quilts are much more imaginative and artistic and just plain fun. I have some upholstery fabric like this and lots of novelty fabrics and you've given me some great ideas.
I love your improv style ❤️
Very creative use of the vintage samples. My favorite block is the first one you made with the face on the green fabric. Oh wait, loved the Beatles too! Award winning quilt in my book.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this quilt come to life!
Thank you showing your version of upholstery fabric quilt. Your standard is very high for not so perfect material. I guess that’s why your quilts are one of kind and stunning
LOVE!!! Thank you for sharing your work.
Very talented! Something I would not have thought of looks great!
So CREATIVE! Dave, you have an amazingly creative mind! I love it! I’ve made several jackets/coats out of upholstery fabric!! This quilt is so busy, but yet, so delightful to explore! Again…you’ve inspired me. Thank you.
@davescraftroom O M G!! 😂😂 You have the most imaginative brain 🧠 ever!! Your fabric stash amazes me. I would so love to see every fabric in it. As you were doing the slideshow I had to back up and take a closer look at some of these blocks. I was DYING 😂😂😂 I’m seriously dead 💀!! You never fail to end up spot on with your designs and commitment to a project. I’m sitting here sewing on a “traditional” kinda quilt for my daughter and have your channel on and I am getting nothing done because I have to keep seeing what you are doing. Please, please, PLEASE do not stop your RUclips channel. You are fantastically brilliant!! Thank you for sharing alll of your creations with us!! I definitely will continue to support!! ❤️❤️💙🪡🧵💙💙
Very well said! I agree wholeheartedly with your comment 😮😊😮😊
use parchment or baking paper on your ironing board and on top of the fabric to protect your iron. just a suggestion love your enthusiasm.
Love it! I have a scrap of the same fabric with the southwestern theme, road signs, old cars, some of which I used in a baby quilt I just finished. I like how you smash boundaries.
Upholstery blocks remind me of my childhood. Another quilt for the books!
Love Love Love your creativity! Thank you again for sharing!! Bless you!🤩🙏💥
Love it. Truly, a work of art ❤️
Just "Found" your channel today and am totally enjoying watching you create. Thanks for sharing with us.
Wicked love it, I guess I need to cut some of my upholstery fabric and see what I can do! Tks for the inspiration.
Have been watching all your videos. You’re amazing! How do you get so many fantastic quilts done so quickly? Do you sleep?
Your Art and Craft construction is beautiful! - thank you for sharing.
just discovered you a couple of days ago. I love your unique and wacky fabrics and the way you put stuff together
Very talented
Thanks for thinking outside of the box! Now I know what to do with my up upholstery fabric! You are my inspiration 😊❤
Love your artistic mind. Iron with a piece of parchment paper or Teflon sheet. No more goop on your iron. Fabric softener dryer sheets wiped across a warm iron will get any residue off from glue. You rock
This quilt is a TOB ( thing of beauty) !!
Wow Dave, your quilts aren't my personal preference but I can appreciate your talent! I think your quilts will be come highly collective in the future! Absolutely fascinating watching your process 😀 👍
Engaging, compelling, I love your combination of the applique and fabric. So cool. Dave, I enjoy your process and the result. Never expect to, but always do love your quilts. Good editing.
I’m fascinated with the eclectic collection of fabrics that you have! Blows my mind. I would never have thought to buy any of those fabrics that were appliquéd on!!! I’m only half way through so don’t know how it’s going to look when finished but great so far. Love watching you work ❤🎉
I absolutely love this quilt! You are so creative and have such an eye for color. Watching you is such a delight and inspiration. ❤
I just found your channel. I love your design esthetic. The fabrics had great motifs. Amazing!! Keep creating!
我原来也喜欢布艺,后来好高骛远。没有继续。现在我回来。发现其实近处的生活也丰富多彩。 现在网络发达,让我开放眼界,认识很多不同的人,看到他们的作品,开启了我的思路。谢谢
Awesome fabric samples
Dave you are very inventive!
I love your technique. You're getting awsome downloads! Carry on
I love this! It is beautiful and you have inspired me to try something like this, since I, too, have a lot of upholstery samples! You are unbelievably talented!
Bonkers design, but very groovy. ✌️
Indeed!
Where did you get all of the quirky fabric to appliqué on the quirky squares? I love your creativity.
This looks like sooooo much fun!!!! Turned out amazing!!!!!
Amazing creativity- truly inspiring ❤️
You are such a phenomenal artist! So inspiring. Watching you I felt a great potential to create ! Thank you so very much 🙏🏼
I love your ideas. I have the same upholstery type material. Now I know what to do with it. You are a fabric genius!
These are my favorite kinds of your quilts. Art quilts.
Came out really cute.
Dave...
I love the bats and Strawberries!
You could design album covers!
A line of Pillows etc!
I think another way to use your gifts..
design privacy curtains for children wings in hospitals.
Your personal line for furniture coverings. Fabric for Medical Uniforms!
Best Regards
Bonnie Ohio 😊
I absolutely love the way you work!!
I am also OBSESSED! Love it
Love it! My two favorite blocks are the pizza slices and the tennis shoes!
The Andy Warhol of the quilt world!
Love this, Dave! Each block looks like it was meant to be.
I thought I was the ONLY one who just will buy any sort of interesting bargain stuff from the thrift store! The upholstery squares, too!!! I have a pile of them now... I thought about doing crazy quilt covers for my OLD sewing chairs which look quite awful about now.. or some pillows... OH yes, I WASH everything before making because yes, must be sure about shrinkage, etc...
This quilt is amazing! I love it!
Das ist so toll. A crazy piece of art. Love it. Greetings from germany
This is wow🌸
So many lovely blocks. I think my favorite is the converse sneaker block.
I love love love the red eyes on the farm :)
Really love your blocks! They’re super cute! I’ve been lacking inspiration, even though I’m trained in textiles, specifically mixed media, I’m openly admitting I have of days! Thanks for being my creative buddy for today! ❤❤❤ much love from England 🏴🇬🇧
P.S, have you seen the festival of quilts ? I worked a stand at Birmingham NEC and talented artists from all over the world make an entry piece. It’s the most wonderful display of talent I’ve ever seen.
Your work would fit right in.
I love the quirk in your style, plenty funky going on 😅
So inspiring thank you😊
So freaking cool! Love it!!!
Love it, I'm going to try something similar.
Catching up on your back catalogue. Just a hint of using fusibles then baking paper/ parchment between the iron and the surface stops the problem with gunk on the iron or surface
What fun! Thanks for the inspiration to have fun with my upholstery fabrics.
Love your videos and how your mind works!
Came out great and enjoying the channel!
Watching your process is fascinating. Thank you!
I’m so in awe of you. You inspire me.
I was hoping to hear about the preparation of this fabric. How do you remove the paper backing on the bottom of the samples and do you prewash the samples? I have several sample books from the 60's and 70's but not sure how to start with them. Thank you for any help. Your quilt was amazing.
I peeled the paper off; most of the glue had deteriorated, in some cases it was harder to get off but I just kind of scraped it off or got it wet and scraped it off. On some of them, I couldn't get it off and I cut that part of the fabric off. I did prewash them around the time I bought them which was quite a while prior to filming the video. They frayed a lot :-/
Stunning! You are a master of your craft!
Love love love this....wow great job!....will apply some of this on my next quilt. i too have upholstery blocks and this just gave me the idea ! thanks for sharing your ideas!!
Exelent Art work.... 👏👏👏
Hi, That was a great video; you're a real artist. Loved watching your enthusiasm. I've subscribed !!
thank you for subscribing and welcome to the Craft Room! 😁👨🏻
I can’t wait to see the finished quilt. What a creative way to use those samples. I can see this project being featured in a national quilting magazine. If you decide to get rid of the rest of them why not do a give away on your channel? I’m sure someone would love to have them and it might grow your channel.
Great suggestions! Actually I finished the quilt by the end of the video 🙂
@@davescraftroom I actually commented before I finished watching. 😂 I love it!
@@ksharpe8137 right on right on 😜 thanks!
Hi Dave. I love your channel. So happy I found it. I think your designs, improv style and use of color are brilliant and I really appreciate that your videos show your entire process thru completion of the quilt. Your editing is snappy and music is great. All around very entertaining. I am recommending you to my friends . Thank you. I know it must be loads of work .
This is so cool, inspired me this blocks of your work so well , really different fabric upholstery idea of art the quilt it amazing
Very good, I'm glad to find this project, please keep showing. God Bless You
I'm trying to make a tote bag from upholstery fabric now. I'm a total newbie at sewing.
You hold your rotary cutter like you would a pen??? Is that just your quirk or is there some benefit. Love your style by the way.
haha I'm not sure tbh if there's a benefit... I use a rotary cutter with a "standard" handle whereas it seems like the majority use the "ergonomic" handle nowadays (hence the "quotes," seems like the ergonomic handles are technically more standard) ... using the standard handle and holding it like that feels natural to me although I think it's just a personal preference
Cant you just put a piece of parchment paper on top of your fabric and paper glue backing? that way your iron wont come in contact with the glue?! I'm a newbie quilter, so what do I know!! LOL. BTW, this is gorgeous!!!!!! Mui inspirational. Cheers from stinking hot FL. ;)
yes you can but I didn't have any :-P
I could totally picture that hanging on the wall in some hidden-corner independent record shop
