Probably mainly, because the video output on the Genesis / Megadrive is really nice. If you can hook it up through an RGB cable on a CRT TV, do so! The NES only had RF and composite output unfortunately (but understandable, seeing its age).
@@OperationPhantomFound it on PS3 CD-Rom with this game in resale stores. I think it was $12. Bundled with a few classics That were converted assembly code. Health regeneration, visible armor and weapon pickups, *and* dragons. This should be remade with some more intricate puzzles like the original Prince of Persia for XBox.
seems like a lot of people didnt really like this video... i didnt even know the game existed and it looks interesting to me, i actually want to see the ending so ill probably end up buying the game myself. That's what i got out of the video, a new game ive never heard of, although thats really the only reason i do watch classic game room, to see games i never would have otherwise found
@@grifcheese1076 There probably won't be many people under the age of 25 that know of it unless they're into retro games or happened to play on one like you did
Some review, not really telling us if you like it or not. Well, you showed hints of how a dedicated player will especially beware of certain enemies. You should try to have an anti-magic cane(hold on to them if you find at least 4 on earlier floors) for floors 17, 18, 19, and 20, the ones that may have Medusas on them. It's their special magics that can rob you of max hit points or goof up your view of the dungeon floor. And the white-suited ninja-like ones called Sasukes can rob you of items, so you should try discarding your more important items(like a Confusion Scroll to use on floor 30 and easily reach the goblet, and a couple of blizzard and/or flame and/or lightning canes to use on the final dragon boss) then pick them up again after clearing the floor of Sasukes but before climbing to the next floor.
If you couldn't tell by how hooked he was and getting into it its a positive review. Its a recommendation if this is your style of game. It was painfully obvious DUHHHHH!
Thanks for posting this. I played this game as a kid and couldn't remember the name of it, and never noticed anyone mentioning it before. Good to know the name, finally.
The game was insanely challenging. The levels were procedurally generated. Movement was methodical. I'm not sure, but, coming out in 1991, this could be the first "rogue" style, dungeon crawling videogame.
I just read this was originally a downloadable game for an online game service in Japan before it was retooled for a retail cartridge release. Like better graphics and an intro and stuff.
This game is on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for 360 and the only reason I put any time into it was for the achievement to make it to the fifth level of the Labyrinth which was all RNG if the stairs were near.
MrRetrogamingBard I can't help but feel like he just isn't trying anymore, back when he was in space the production quality was so much better. This seems more like a "I'm just gonna zoom through this, screw it". I wonder how much longer CGR will still be around, things aren't looking good. I understand he had to make cuts but damn.
There was also a similar game on the Sega Gamegear.I forget the name but played it constantly. BTW. I just caught the name of teh book and all this time I thought he was saying coked up chicken.
There's an episode of The Game Chasers where Justin "Jew Wario" Carmichal is looking for this game but can't remember the name. It's nice to see Mark playing this as I've never played this before and now I finally know what he was talking about when he described the game in that video. R.I.P. Jew Wario
This is one of those games, alongside Jewel Master, that I never played until AtGames gave me a copy for free. And unlike Jewel Master, which should be a long running franchise, I never had much fun with this one. Maybe I'll try again
Man I'm trying to play Shining in the Darkness. I had to check my life choices when it was 3am and i was lying on the sofa with my eyes just barely open, just hitting c repeatedly and not paying any attention at all. Thats all you do. It seriously is garbage. I can't get out the first bit of dungeon and I'm level 9 or something. I might like it more if it used more than 1 f-ing texture. At least Phantasy Star sms changed the brick colour sometimes.
I'm enjoying these videos, reviews, really the channel as a whole. One thing tho. The pics attached as the icon picture on these RUclips videos are hideously low res and distorted. So ugly. It looks like a bad screen capture was blown up and pasted as the main pic. Dear god please fix this
Eggs come from chicken bums they don't grow on plants omg. In the absence of any discernible verbally expressed opinion on this game, I'm assuming Mark liked it.
This should've been called "Classic Game Room-F" because it felt like nothing but the "filler" to a Classic Game Room review without the review. #kindamisstheolddays
what happened to CGR, what was the point of this video, how is this a review, why is there the website link in a weird spot for the whole duration of the video.
MunkFano1 I feel you. CGR is getting ridiculous with all these advertisements and very shallow reviews, that aren't reviews anymore. thank God he changed the ending of his videos with that stupid turbo volcano stuff. I don't know...CGR kinda sucks nowadays
A decent roguelike from back when roguelikes weren't as popular as they are now. There was a sequel on Game Gear called "Dragon Crystal"
ethinethin And on the Master System in Europe, which is my preferred version. I still play it today, it's very challenging and replayable.
ethinethin It's like the first Dark Souls game. A real challenge.
Thanks for that bit of info that we should have gotten from this review.
A roguelike from back when no one had ever used the term roguelike.
I always assumed the Master System / Game Gear game came out first! Love both games, anyway
That is some crispy and clean text, I am amazed they could accomplish this in 1991. Text in the final fantasy games wasn't this nice.
Probably mainly, because the video output on the Genesis / Megadrive is really nice. If you can hook it up through an RGB cable on a CRT TV, do so! The NES only had RF and composite output unfortunately (but understandable, seeing its age).

Funny, because the Pi is similar somewhat in dimensions to a Sega Cartridge.
Nintendo Switch?
I picked up this game based on this video alone. It looks very appealing to me. I LOVE "late night games" as he put it.
Mark... this was remade on the Sega CD.
On a compilation in Japan only.
This is honestly one of my favorite games on the Genesis, just like Dragon Crystal is one of my favorite games for the Game Gear (both similar).
This gotta be the first few Rogue like games for a console!
Health regeneration, visible armor and weapon pickups, *and* dragons. This should be remade with some more intricate puzzles like the original Prince of Persia for XBox.
Can't wait for the vinyl release.

LaserActiveGuy apparently its on the nintendo 3ds as well
I'm 15 and found an old sega genesis in my uncle's closet and played the heck out of it now I'm checking to see if anybody has heard of it

Game Gear = Good Old Times!!!
This game should have had David Bowie in it.
What game shouldn't?
I played this game as a child on an AtGames Sega Genesis (I didn't get far at all)
Same. The music was good for some reason though
> Fire Shark
> Wind Squid
> Eggplant Snail
< Mutton
Majora T, Don't forget to top it off with some Brown Potion.
I remember renting this as a kid for a weekend of non stop fun...then shorty after playing it wanting to lay in traffic
You have no taste, so maybe it's for the best.
Thanks for posting this. I played this game as a kid and couldn't remember the name of it, and never noticed anyone mentioning it before. Good to know the name, finally.
Oh, jeez, Fatal Labyrinth was one of my favorite games back when i was a kid. So tough to get your head around when you were 7.
The game was insanely challenging. The levels were procedurally generated. Movement was methodical. I'm not sure, but, coming out in 1991, this could be the first "rogue" style, dungeon crawling videogame.
Nah, there was one as far back as Atari 2600 called Crypts of Chaos.
I'm happy they put this on Sonic's UGC. Otherwise I wouldnt have been able to play and find out it's actually an awesome mind numbing game.
I played this lots before and it's less grind more of getting items and getting to the top and there is an ending
This is one of the few Mega Drive games I don't have on Steam, but I did play it on a portable Mega Drive thing and it was fun
I just read this was originally a downloadable game for an online game service in Japan before it was retooled for a retail cartridge release. Like better graphics and an intro and stuff.
I just bought it this game for 7 bucks on estarland... Love it! So nostalgic...
I did understand the e.g.g. reference and yes I do need to get out more.
me too, and I've never really played E.G.G. :/
IHaveArrived me too :( i need to get out more
IHaveArrived Me Four.
Same, I love E.G.G. Only ever played it via emulation, but it's fun nonetheless.

Hype for Die Dungeon!
beware the floor shark
Also you can over eat in this game and die. Or even discard & throw ANY item at enemy and damage them. Realism :)
If you equip two Short Bows when your AR is 00 that will raise it up to 99
The title screen was kinda cool.
Criminally underrated
I did understand that...and yes...I do need to get out more
Now that you've said it, there's someone out there working on an indie Die Dungeon. It'll look like this but with more pink and cost $20.
Played this with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis collection. Jesus, this game is brutal.
Ragnamune Would you kindly not take Christ's Name in vain? It's sinful and offensive. Thank you.
they were being pretty polite if you ask me, they could have said JESUS ASS-FUCKING CHRIST. oh well, next time.
Pretty cool game
It looks nice but the walk to attack style is weird not sure about that one.
This game is known in Japan as Shi no Meikyuu: Labyrinth of Death.
This game is good. A great LP would be from Game Horder. He does the game like I would. Thanks Mark!
I'm now expecting 'Mildly Dangerous Hallway' to show up as an unreleased Genesis exclusive.
Hey Mark! I recently just picked up a genesis. What are some games you would recommend?
Action 52. Thats 52 games for the price of one.
I got this at a yard sale in the mid 90s
Wait... I'm confused. Is this a review or a playthrough sample? Did he enjoy it? Does he recommend it?

This reminds me of a game I have for the Master System called Dragon Crystal. It's a pretty fun game but gets hard as hell

jewel master is legit great action game.
This game is actually a lot more fun to play than "Shining In The Darkness", which isn't as good as everyone claims it to be, unlike "Shining Force".
