  • In this video, we change the oil & filter on a Suzuki GS500 K2 motorcycle. This video is useful to anyone changing the oil & filter on this and similar motorcycles and, in fact, any motorcycle as the principle will be the same.

Brilliant! Ive had an old gs 500 for about 4 months now, and thinking of changing oil n filter. Mine is mint with 15k original miles. A lot lighter and easier to handle than my zzr11. ( getting older dontcha know)

Thanks for the feedback. This one is low mileage but has stood outside for a while and has a little surface rust on the frame that could do with sorting. Starts on the button. Hopefully, this morning, we'll do a quick rideout to see how she runs, so watch out for the update.

I need a torque wrench lol and wish i watched this video before changing the oil filter. The cover is currently sealed but top right has obviously snapped and is free spinning. Just wondering if I should try my luck with it as is or dump fresh oil and change the bolt

You think the bolt has snapped or the engine casing thread has stripped? I guess the right answer is to replace the bolt if you can...if it's not leaking, maybe a job for another day...

This has not translated, well. We do not have access to this any more. I'd try on the forums for this question.

Does one need to change any sorts of crush washer or some type of seal on the drain bolt?

(The actual info is around the middle of my wall of text)
The owners manual has a chart for all maintenance intervals on page "6-4".
You can get a digital one (aka a .pdf file) for free by googling "suzuki gs500 manual" as well as the service manual (useful too).
The manuals are are easy to read and lots "oh sh**" moments for me just reading the headlines real quick.
Anyway, oil change depends on how old the bike is. It's written for new bikes sort of.
The chart says replace oil and filter after:
      • The first 1000km/600miles or first 2 months
      • Then at 6000km/4000miles or first 12 months
      •Then 12000km/7500miles/24 months
      •18000km/11000miles/36 months
      •24000km/14500miles/46months.
It stops there but never says if the last one is the guideline for the rest of the bike's life, but i assume so. You can also just change it more often if you feel like it, cause that seems like a bit much to me waiting every 4 years...
      Very important.
      Torque specs.
      Oil drain plug is 23nm/16.5lb-ft.
      Oil pan bolts is 14nm/10lb-ft.
The torque wrench spec chart is in the service manual.
Drive chain - clean and lube every 1000km/600mi. Etc.

Is it okay to change the oil filter a couple days after I change the oil? And will all the oil come out when changing the filter ?

    • @MotorcycleFettlers
      @MotorcycleFettlers  Месяц назад

I would always change them together. There will always be some residual oil left behind during an oil change and the filter holds a fair bit.

Thanks! by the way does the oil need to be at the top of the markings or in the middle at the end when it cycled the motor.

The oil should ideally be at the top of the dip stick markings when cold and up right

hi guys, i did everything what you did but mine came alot of oil out of the filter housing. and when i tried to get the bolt thighter it broke. have any tips for the oil filter housing part?

Difficult to say without seeing. Is the leak being caused by a failed seal? or, possibly, even a warped engine cover. For the bolt. I guess it's a case of extracting it and replacing. I'd definitely be looking to replace any seals if you have a leak.
