It reminds me of The Taming of the Shrew, and how even after Shakespeare was dead people wrote a sequel to it not even 50 years after his death (entitled The Tamer Tamed) where it was gender swapped. So the idea of "if a romantic comedy is problematic due to the gender roles involved, just switch the genders" seems to be an old stand-by.
"Unbearable woman meets a man who's mean to her… because… and just spanks her until she's a better person and falls in love with him." That's not a screwball comedy, that's Taming of the Shrew!
Taming of the Shrew is also kind of gross and hashtag problematic. I saw a performance of it when I was like fifteen and I kept waiting for it to get funny... and I love Shakespeare's comedies.
+SavageGreywolf Whether or not Taming of the Shrew is funny really depends on the quality of the production. I've seen some hilarious interpretations and some unbearable ones. You really have to lean into the misogyny for it to work and some people are afraid to do that or don't know how to do it in a funny way. And more importantly, you need to have really charming leads for it to work, similar to this movie. As for it being "problematic"... dude it's 428 years old...
Love this film, it was filmed in my hometown, Fort Bragg Ca. The school where she berates the teacher is my old middle school, and the said classroom is my old homeroom. My grandmother is in the miniature golf scene.
Liked this, not surprised Sarah wasn't having any of this movie. I can see it and get it, I'm with Brad, though, it's a movie I saw as a kid, but haven't seen in a long time, so it's one that holds a place in me. But I do see the problems in it.
The most hotly anticipated Midnight Screenings of all time. Also, hearing about Kurt Russell at sea gives me a bizarre Guardians of the Galaxy prequel vibe.
My sarcasm meter has difficulties taking readings on comments from time to time. You're laying it on for my comment being to obvious, right? He was the titled character playing against Martain Short as the put-upon dad. It's forgettable early 90's fare.
A B I wasn't being sarcastic. It has been so long since I've seen or even thought about that film that I literally didn't know. The only thing I can remember about that movie is the Turquoise DVD case with some long-haired blonde guy on the cover.
I feel like this is the case for almost every movie from the 80s and any time before then. People look at these older movies from the past and focus so much on the parts that aren't considered appropriate today that they overlook why the film was praised to begin with. I'm not going to watch this movie, but I do love watching stuff from before my time because I just love movies. The Breakfast Club is my favorite 80s movie and I completely understand if you hate Bender for how he treats Claire. I totally get it, but that is just one part of the film. The rest of the funny and heart wrenching moments are what makes that film so good.
A couple years ago, I caught a movie from ‘43 “Behind the Rising Sun” on TV and immediately thought “this movie is kinda racist and white washed.” See, the movie was set in Japan and the 3 main characters were Japanese yet the people playing them were clearly not Asian. I sat dumbfounded, laughing and thinking “How the hell did anyone back then believe these people were Japanese?” In the end, I was like “That was a different time and I can’t accurately judge this by modern standards... this is just a snapshot of how the world was.”
This is one of the best MS you guys have done! I love that you and Sarah can watch a movie and have different opinions and be able to share those opinions and come to an understanding. Great stuff, more reviews like this.
As someone who really enjoys the Brad and Sarah Friendship Hour, I would totally be on board with seeing more of these types of videos because there is something kind of fun about going over these older movies that might seem iffy today and talking about it rather than just outright hating it because of those aspects.
So this film falls into that bucket of 80s movies that people liked at the time but if you think about for two seconds now you get creeped out and want to call the police. Like revenge of the nerds or sixteen candles
B Birdwhistell True, but, in fairness to those other movies, they only have one unfortunate scene/element, whereas this movie's entire premise is objectionable. (And in all honesty, those are both movies from my childhood, so I can kind of see the issue from both sides.)
I saw Sixteen Candles for the first time a couple of years ago and something tells me that even if I saw this in the 80s, I'd still think Ted is creepy, especially on the bus early on where he just won't back off. I was just never into the whole "He's like a cute puppy who just wants affection" justification.
Just finished watching it myself and was shocked by how much I liked it. The premise is fucked up, but goddamn if the movie wasn't hilarious. Loved Kurt Russell, and LOVED Goldie Hawn.
lol you do? cause....it wasn't at all, still isn't. its a comedy about a absurd situation. its not a commentary on anything nor is it supposed to be taken seriously. we don't need to over analyze every little thing as far as entertainment and escapism goes...
I agree I thought Goldie’s character was pure evil at first and totally deserved her comeuppance. That’s what made it funny, and this lady is totally overreacting like chill out.
It was a pun. Some movies don't need to be analyzed(the emoji movie for example, unless you need to look into cynical products). This was interesting to look at because of how much we changed as a culture since it came out . That said, any criticism for the terrible pun is deserved and I await all of the back lash ;)
I have weird mixed feelings for this film. Russell and Hawn did amazing and the jokes were pretty funny consistently, but Russell is also just an unlikeable asshole after the first third and gets REWARDED for his behavior in the end, and that drives me insane. And if there's one thing a movie should never do, it's make me dislike Kurt Russell unless he's SUPPOSED to be despised in it.
When talking about today's generation seeing this, I'm closer to Laura's age and saw Overboard when it aired on tv when I was about 12. Both my parents liked it when it came out. Even at that age though I thought she was way too forgiving to Kurt and their first love scene made me uncomfortable.
Like Brad said, it's the nostalgia factor that make some of us like these film even with those flaws. I remember this being one of my mother's favorite movies back then.
This movie was out around the same time as "Throw Mama From The Train", my brother and his wife went out to the movies and that's the movie my brother wanted to see. They got to the theater and "Throw Mama From The Train" wasn't playing there but "Overboard" was, my brother got mixed up and thought "Overboard" was "Throw Mama" so they went to see that. My sister-in-law told me all through the movie my brother kept saying "Where's Danny DeVito?"
Saturday Morning Cheap Seats " it's the sport of kind, better than diamond rings" Goldie Hawn was Golden in the 80s. It also featured Woody Haroldson and Westly Snipes.
I haven't seen Overboard but hearing about it makes me wonder what Sarah would think of a movie like Working Girl (I saw that for the first time a few months ago and it definitely holds up)
I had a friend who texted me once, and when I didn't immediately reply, continued to send follow up texts. Within 2 minutes, he was asking why I was mad at him. The reality was that I had a flip phone and it just took me that long to respond to the initial text.
I seen this movie for the first time about 4 years ago and really enjoyed it. Sure there are some flaws, but it's a comedy, so I don't take it seriously. Anyways, great review!
I remember liking and watching this all the time as a kid. I loved Goldie Hawn and the kids parts. However, I was a weird sensitive child too. I remember really disliking Kurt Russel through most of the movie because he was so mean to her.
maybe I watched this movie too much, but I always had the impression that their mom just left, just something about the way they talk about her or you know, dont talk about her, only kurt russel says she died, the kids say something like "sometimes moms leave" and it'd be another reason why he treats her so badly, still angry at his ex.
I see the problems the movie has, but it kind of falls into the twilight argument for me. I feel like most people who watch the movie are well aware that this is NOT how you treat women nor will they be nearly as forgiving if you do. And just to give context, I free up with this movie on VHS growing up and I've never thought about the story too Literally or that it had any basis in reality. Maybe its just the nostalgia goggles, I dunno.
I remember not liking Kurt Russel's character that much but I still love the movie and the kids (I usually hate kids in movies). I think this movie is like SciFi , if you think too much about it you're not going to enjoy it. In some ways, Goldie's performance simultaneously makes it better and worse. She's so likeable that you feel sorry for her, while still watching her choose between two men who treated her horribly. I like to think she chose the kids.
Given how terribly.... “problematic” doesn’t even begin to describe this movie..... I’m curious to see how all this is handled in the upcoming remake. EDIT: An extra dark comedy horror version would probably be actually pretty good. Actually. In the same vein as Death Becomes Her.... that would be a great movie. Death Becomes Her hits that dark comedy mark perfectly.
I honestly will be surprised if it's not practically the same just with genders swapped. it would be nice to see it touch on the concept and issues in some new ways and actually address with some of the actual problems that were somewhat non-issues back in the 80's. The problem is that I don't expect it to actually do that. That's just not the tone that some are heavily leveling when talking about the genders these days that I see trying to affect different forms of media. I know that's being pessimistic. I do hope it actually does surprise me. guess we'll see.
Overboard really is problematic, but for me it works because Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell just have such great chemistry together and they’re so fun to watch, that, logically speaking, I can forget about how truly fucked up the premise is. That’s why I have doubts about the remake, because I don’t see it working with anybody else. This is a movie that I think can literally only work with Hawn and Russell
I tried re watching this film because I liked it as a kid. But I wasn't quite as fun for me this time as it once was... as for calling her Annie, I think he just made that name up and he called her that at the end because that's how he got to know her.
I have been telling my friends "No, seriously, that new Anna Faris film is a remake, only the roles are gender-swapped." "Soooooo.......... the guy abuses the woman and forces her to do stuff.......????" "................... I didn't say that it was particularly funny......"
Not that I will be watching the Anna Faris version, but it will be fun to rewatch this review when that version enters (05/04/2018) the cinema. My advice see/review soon. I will be surprised if this movie stays in theaters more than a few weeks.
Wasn't there going to be a remake with Jennifer Lopez and John Travolta? Yikes! Love Overboard! And Goldie Hawn is an icon and great a great actor . This and Death Becomes Her are some of her best and funniest work.
j ho Not a fan of those films (they reek of horrible homophobia) and haven’t seen Wild or Pursuit. She just never was too appealing for me to check out her stuff.
+F. N. Lorter Hot Pursuit is garbage. The Wild is where she was nominated an Oscar. It's a gritty story and deals with variety of serious issues. Great performances all around.
I watched this movie somewhat often as a kid and didn't see much wrong with it until I watched it again as a young adult. I do still like this movie a lot, but yeah it has serious issues that a gender swap won't fix BUT I think it will be interesting to see men cry about it, and it would be nice to see women have a power fantasy for once.
Would you recommend it as a movie to laugh at how out of touch with reality the romance in it is? That's always fun to do with any romantic movie. Also, best romantic comedy ever, Alfred Hitchcock The 39 Steps.
Doctor Feinstone He's only in a few scenes. Unfortunately, Adam Sandler is the lead, and the movie is in the IMDB bottom 100. Though I personally think it's better than Jack and Jill.
I agree that this movie is totally problematic today, but I do remember loving it as a kid. That being said I'm pretty sure that Kurt Russell called Goldie Hawn's character "Annie" because her name was Joann and Annie was close without being too close. I don't think it had any connection to his wife.
When I saw this as a kid with my parents I just found it so bizarre that the Kurt Russell character would even bother with his crazy plan. Is he just a weird nutjob who wants to teach the rich lady a lesson? Who thinks like that? Besides Hollywood screenwriters of the 1930's and 1940's, of course. My parents just viewed it through the lens of "Heheh the spoiled brat has to cook and clean for the first time, GOOD." But at least this movie taught me what Poison Oak is, and made me want to go play mini golf immediately...
Just had a thought. Is Overboard intended as a retelling of Taming of the Shrew? Because the premise sounds eerily similar (separate woman you don't get along with from her family, tell her you're married to one another, beat and humiliate her till she's compliant, then let her see them again). Never did like this one.
i really love this movie i'm 39 so i grew up with this film. the thing about this film is that i NEVER took it seriously. on how i thought about it growing up. is that him treating her like that was him getting back at her. and he no pun intended goes overboard. in doing all that. i'm not saying it's a smart script but it's not just the leads who make the film it's those kids as well. they make it too. in short i never really think about all that shit that bothered Sarah only cause it's a movie. even as a kid i thought he treated her like shit. but as the film goes on it and at some point in the film to me it feels like he slowly at least cuts back on it. and Brad maybe right it might be the leads chemistry i dunno but i just love this film. and i also knew Sarah wouldn' t like it. and i have seen Swept Away my god is that film bad. i actually like Madonna as actress but she's awful in that film. and even without her being in it the film is just painful to watch.even the Original director i think saw it and thought it was awful. cause i believe the lead who treats her like a slave. is the Original director of the 70's version son. and he's awful in it as well. if you want a really good funny story. back in the 70's when Roger Corman was putting films like Amaracord out for distribution out here in the states and putting them in drive-in's the Original Swept Away he found boring when shown it and turned it down. he went home and at some point he called from home and asked about the film and was told there was i think a rape scene in it and his complain about it was too much talking. he goes after told that rape happened and than back to the talking.
It reminds me of The Taming of the Shrew, and how even after Shakespeare was dead people wrote a sequel to it not even 50 years after his death (entitled The Tamer Tamed) where it was gender swapped. Yes!
Taming of the Shrew is a screwball comedy
+SavageGreywolf Whether or not Taming of the Shrew is funny really depends on the quality of the production. I've seen some hilarious interpretations and some unbearable ones. yep that's what we got
Oh her face in the thumbnail! Dis is gunna be Gud!
The most hotly anticipated Midnight Screenings of all time.
Also, hearing about Kurt Russell at sea gives me a bizarre Guardians of the Galaxy prequel vibe.
So Goldie Hawn is Star Lord's mom? I'm okay with that. And since this takes place in the '80's, it actually fits kind of well.
Isn't that Captain Ron?
A B Was Kurt Russell in that?
My sarcasm meter has difficulties taking readings on comments from time to time. You're laying it on for my comment being to obvious, right? He was the titled character playing against Martain Short as the put-upon dad. It's forgettable early 90's fare.

Awww, Sara. That is cutest MS thumbnail I have seen.
I miss 80's Dan.
This is one of the best MS you guys have done! I love that you and Sarah can watch a movie and have different opinions and be able to share those opinions and come to an understanding. Great stuff, more reviews like this.
I never ever thought "Annie" was the dead wife's name. I just assumed it was a nickname for "Joanna."
As someone who really enjoys the Brad and Sarah Friendship Hour, I would totally be on board with seeing more of these types of videos because there is something kind of fun about going over these older movies that might seem iffy today and talking about it rather than just outright hating it because of those aspects.

hingeslevers It's "they're."

Right? When has art ever held a mirror up to the society that produced it?
Just finished watching it myself and was shocked by how much I liked it. The premise is fucked up, but goddamn if the movie wasn't hilarious. Loved Kurt Russell, and LOVED Goldie Hawn.
(Sees thumbnail) This is gonna be the most glorious Midnight Screening. :D
Sarah's doing a good impression of YMS in the thumbnail.
this is the only rom com i ever paid to go see. i was 12 at the time and like always, a huge Kurt Russell fan.
Make Sarah watch eyes wide shut next
Midnight _Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenings_ Retro
A Korean soap based on s 80’s version of Shakespeare’s taming of the shrew? I’m in!
I hope this review doesn't go
_overboard!_
Goldie and Kurt in Swept Away.
I cant believe that they are remaking this movie....jeez cant Hollywood come up with an original concept!
I love watching you two together and personally wish I could be Sarah's friend. I agree with both of your sentiments.
Fun fact. This film was written by a woman. Leslie Nixon :D
We mention her in the review :)
I've been looking forward to this for ages.
I’ve been waiting for this for SO LONG
i remember this being dated back then too.
lol you do? cause....it wasn't at all, still isn't. its a comedy about a absurd situation. its not a commentary on anything nor is it supposed to be taken seriously. we don't need to over analyze every little thing as far as entertainment and escapism goes...
It's funny really this all stems from Swept Away 1974 Italian film to Overboard 1987 Rom Com to Swept Away 2002 back to Overboard 2018
I'm looking forward to Swept Away 2031.
Don't you think your analyzation of the movie went a bit...overboard?
matthew orenstein Just go sit in the corner...
I agree I thought Goldie’s character was pure evil at first and totally deserved her comeuppance. That’s what made it funny, and this lady is totally overreacting like chill out.
Probably not a good idea to use that as your defence in a kidnapping trial!
It was a pun. Some movies don't need to be analyzed(the emoji movie for example, unless you need to look into cynical products). This was interesting to look at because of how much we changed as a culture since it came out . That said, any criticism for the terrible pun is deserved and I await all of the back lash ;)

NO ONE puts baby in the corner !!!
Oh sorry wrong 80s movie. Carry on.
I think Sarah summed it up pretty well. Good cast, creepy plot, and this could have been more done better.
Sarah is back
And she's having none of this movie. lol
The new Overboard will suck. Anna Farias is a good actress but the other guy is like a Mexican Adam Sandler
John Smith Anna Farris is known for the scary movie series. Not sure how good she really is
Goldie Hawn's character owns everything. She is the boss. Her character arc was one of learning humility, but she is the power in either relationship.
"Die in a fire"
I always thought he called her Annie because her name was Joanna and he just picked a name close to hers
Neg her. What? That was the best. XD
necogreendragon "oh I thought you said something else..." lol
Normally he has to censor Irving, not Sarah!
Where does she say that?

Spent the entire video waiting for a Gilmore Girls reference, wasn't disappointed.
When talking about today's generation seeing this, I'm closer to Laura's age and saw Overboard when it aired on tv when I was about 12. Both my parents liked it when it came out.
Even at that age though I thought she was way too forgiving to Kurt and their first love scene made me uncomfortable.
John Goodrich You were 12 and watching a love scene with your parents, of course you were going to feel uncomfortable.
Probably because her real husband wasn't any better. Claiming he didn't know her and leaving her alone in the hospital
Like Brad said, it's the nostalgia factor that make some of us like these film even with those flaws. I remember this being one of my mother's favorite movies back then.
My wife and I are totally with you on this one Brad we love this movie. Its one of her all time faves.
They finally did it!
This movie was out around the same time as "Throw Mama From The Train", my brother and his wife went out to the movies and that's the movie my brother wanted to see. Imma steal that, just like [INSERT ETHNIC MINORITY HERE] do!
I haven't seen Overboard but hearing about it makes me wonder what Sarah would think of a movie like Working Girl (I saw that for the first time a few months ago and it definitely holds up)
I would LOVE it if they revisited Working Girl!
You really need to write this movie Brad. I liked the movie, but it’s not really to analyze it. But I get why people wouldn’t like it.
My aunt, God rest her soul, absolutely adored this movie. I never really cared for it.
Neil Strauss is the guys name. He also co-wrote Marilyn Manson's autobiography, which is a very good book
And The Game. A must read.
Used to be a Nice Guy in high school-I never forgave myself for that.
Same...
As opposed to being an asshole?
My mom Loved this movie. Me not so much.
This movie gave me one of my favorite lines:
Cranial rectal inversion
Is this a reupload? I swear you’ve posted an overboard midnight screenings before
I always assumed he called her Annie because it was short for Joanna, since her character name was Joanna stayton
What's wrong with a washing machine for a birthday present?
I would like a free washing machine.

Anyways, great review!
were you bored or overbored?
Now do the movie Hunk.
We got to brink back the phrase Doink
I remember liking and watching this all the time as a kid. I loved Goldie Hawn and the kids parts. However, I was a weird sensitive child too. I remember really disliking Kurt Russel through most of the movie because he was so mean to her.
"Hey Trav! Don't knock her up!"
I was 7, and this was probably the first film I saw that wasn’t for kids. My cousin took me, my parents would never have.
For like the first 5 minutes I thought you guys were talking about "Going Overboard" the Adam Sandler movie and I was so confused.
Did it occur to no-one involved that this film is pro-adultery?
maybe I watched this movie too much, but I always had the impression that their mom just left, just something about the way they talk about her or you know, dont talk about her, only kurt russel says she died, the kids say something like "sometimes moms leave" and it'd be another reason why he treats her so badly, still angry at his ex.

The remake of Born Yesterday is wonderful.
I do agree with Brad, the charcters in the 80s film own the movie. I wouldn't be able to watch it with other actors.

That's not being pessimistic, that's just not giving Hollywood the benefit of the doubt because those fuckers have certainly NOT earned it.
@10:38 That would be Chekhov's Gun...

50 Shades of Overboard ? 🤔
If this movie did not have Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn, it would be Passengers creepy.
Show of hands, who here has seen the robot chicken sketch about this movie?

Let me guess: this is part 1 of a trilogy....
Best part of the video is Brad's mind legitimately being blown by the various forms of modern misogyny Sarah explains to him around 34 minutes in.
Wasn't there going to be a remake with Jennifer Lopez and John Travolta? Yikes!
Love Overboard! And Goldie Hawn is an icon and great a great actor . This and Death Becomes Her are some of her best and funniest work.
This is Reese Witherspoon’s favorite movie, which explains why she makes shitty movie choices.
Legally Blonde is pretty good for what it is. Cruel Intentions as well. The Wild was very good but all of that grace goes out the window with Pursuit.
j ho Not a fan of those films (they reek of horrible homophobia) and haven’t seen Wild or Pursuit.
Alyssa Stehle So like any married couple?
The thing is men wouldn’t cry about and be all extra sensitive.
Right, I'm sure some guys will think it's hot to be in servitude to a complete asshole.
Overboard... Definitely an 80's classic. Kind of like "The Zero Boys". They just don't make them like they used to. That's how it goes.
Would you recommend it as a movie to laugh at how out of touch with reality the romance in it is? That's always fun to do with any romantic movie.
Also, best romantic comedy ever, Alfred Hitchcock The 39 Steps.
Well, at least it's not "Going Overboard." Burt Young is depressingly phoning it in and he's still the best part of that awful movie.
Endless Noise oooo, a movie with Burt Young in the lead? I have GOT to see that
Doctor Feinstone He's only in a few scenes.
Please tell me we’re gonna get Encino man soon?
The next movie Brad should get Sarah to watch with him is Encino Man.
My parents just viewed it through the lens of "Heheh the spoiled brat has to cook and clean for the first time, GOOD."
But at least this movie taught me what Poison Oak is, and made me want to go play mini golf immediately...
Just had a thought. Is Overboard intended as a retelling of Taming of the Shrew? Because the premise sounds eerily similar (separate woman you don't get along with from her family, tell her you're married to one another, beat and humiliate her till she's compliant, then let her see them again). Never did like this one.
Revenge of the Ninja.
Well down here in Elk Snout now Brad we don’t know about these films shit man you’re lucky I am housebroken!!!
My mother loves this movie XD
i really love this movie i'm 39 so i grew up with this film. the thing about this film is that i NEVER took it seriously. on how i thought about it growing up. is that him treating her like that was him getting back at her. and he no pun intended goes overboard.
in doing all that. i'm not saying it's a smart script but it's not just the leads who make the film it's those kids as well. they make it too. in short i never really think about all that shit that bothered Sarah only cause it's a movie. even as a kid i thought he treated her like shit. but as the film goes on it and at some point in the film to me it feels like he slowly at least cuts back on it.
and Brad maybe right it might be the leads chemistry i dunno but i just love this film. and i also knew Sarah wouldn' t like
it. and i have seen Swept Away my god is that film bad. i actually like Madonna as actress but she's awful in that film. and even without her being in it the film is just painful to watch.even the Original director i think saw it and thought it was awful. cause i believe the lead who treats her like a slave. is the Original director of the 70's version son. and he's awful in it as well.
if you want a really good funny story. back in the 70's when Roger Corman was putting films like Amaracord out for distribution out here in the states and putting them in drive-in's the Original Swept Away he found boring when shown it and turned it down.
he went home and at some point he called from home and asked about the film and was told there was i think a rape scene in it and his complain about it was too much talking. he goes after told that rape happened and than back to the talking.
its odd seeing the front of Brad's house
Really odd, seeing how that's not my house :)
It's odd and a bit creepy you even registered that. In what non-stalkery world does that even matter?
oh I will explain its the overbright porch light that its giving the house an unsettling vibe.
also as the car was parked their i just assumed it was his house
